Course Description
The aim of this course is to improve oral expression and fluency in communication among advanced students. The course encourages spontaneous use of the language. Students learn to develop and support their ideas in individual presentations or group discussions on assigned topics, expand their vocabulary and improve their pronunciation.
Program Schedule
Week 1
Presentation of material. Present yourself and tell the class about yourself: likes, desires, and a brief biography.
Week 2
Refer to conversations that occurred in another moment. Uses of the past tense and indirect style.
Week 3
Conflict situations according to Argentines. Recommendations. Imperative and expressions of influence.
Week 4
Turns in conversations. Topic: immigration. Stereotypes. Problems of adaptation and integration into the new society. Importance in the economic scheme. Examples in different countries.
Week 5
Methods of communication. News. Comment and evaluate events in the news.
Week 6
Publicity. Strategies of marketing. Creation of new needs and consumerism. Analysis and criticism of public announcements. Oppose yourself to other opinions.
Week 7
Debate: express opinions. Legalization of drugs: lower the crime? Marijuana or tobacco?
Week 8
Men and women in the 21st century: singular qualities of each one, work opportunities, compatibility of the new role of the women with family life.
Week 9
Midterm.
Week 10
Modification of nature and its consequences. Cloning of cells and species. Transgenic food. Climatic change.
Week 11
Collapse of transit in different cities. Solutions for Buenos Aires?
Week 12
Free circulation of information. Democratization of the culture? Sites of exchange of archives.
Week 13
Supernatural experiences. Superstitions vs. Rationality.
Week 14
Hypothetical situations. Group resolution of problems. Argument and counterargument.
Week 15
Final exam. Turn in final grades.
Course Evaluation
In agreement with the policies of the University of Belgrano the student can only have a 25% absence rate. The percentage of attendance that is required in order to take the final exam is 75%. Any trip or excursion that is not planned in the calendar is part of the 25% absence.
