Chapter 22: The Trickster’s Trial
The winds of the West swept across the rocky terrain, carrying a chill that made Luna pull her cloak tighter around her. Every step she took felt heavier, the weight of her insecurities growing as they moved closer to their destination. She was supposed to be the Goddess of Destruction, master of the elements, yet time and again, it was Elian who stepped in to protect her. That gnawing fear crept back in—what if it happened again?
Elian stopped suddenly, holding up his hand to signal Luna. “Do you feel that?”
Luna paused, focusing on the energy around them. A strange clash of divine forces rippled through the air. “Someone’s fighting... but this is different.”
Elian nodded. “Let’s check it out.”
Together, they hurried toward the source, eventually reaching the top of a hill overlooking a dust-filled clearing. Below, two figures were locked in battle. One was a tall, armored warrior, his spear gleaming with divine light as he struck with ferocious strength. The other, darting and flipping through the air with uncanny agility, was a woman wielding a staff. Her laughter rang out, sharp and carefree, as she toyed with her opponent.
Luna’s heart sank. The woman, with her playful smirk and effortless grace, radiated confidence. Power. Luna clenched her fists, swallowing the lump of fear rising in her throat.
“That must be Bella,” Elian whispered. The stories of the reincarnated Monkey King barely did her justice.
As the armored warrior lunged again, Bella sidestepped with a laugh, easily knocking the spear from his hand. “Come on now,” she teased, “I expected more of a fight.”
With a swift strike from her staff, she sent the warrior flying backward. He hit the ground with a groan, his armor dented and cracked. Bella, grinning, dusted off her hands like it had been a game.
“Enjoying the show?” Bella’s voice rang out, sharp and knowing. She glanced up toward the hill where Elian and Luna stood, her golden eyes gleaming with mischief.
Luna stiffened. Despite Bella’s playful tone, Luna felt her stomach churn. She wasn’t ready for this—another powerful opponent, another fight she might lose.
Elian glanced at her, his face calm but alert. “Let’s go down.”
Reluctantly, Luna followed as they descended the hill. Her legs felt like lead. Every step closer to Bella made her fear swell, though she tried to hide it.
Bella leaned casually on her staff as they approached, giving them both a once-over. “Well, well. If it isn’t the famous lovers. Elian and Luna, right?”
“How do you know us?” Luna asked, her voice shaky despite trying to sound confident.
Bella raised an eyebrow, her grin widening. “Oh, everyone’s heard about you two. The lovebirds shaking up the divine world. Word travels fast, especially when you’ve got a reputation for battling gods.”
Luna flinched at the reminder. Her hand instinctively reached for Elian, as if needing his presence to steady her.
“And who’s that?” Elian gestured toward the fallen warrior, trying to steer the conversation away from Luna’s unease.
Bella shrugged. “Oh, him? Just some hero with delusions of grandeur. Thought he could take me on. Happens all the time.” She waved it off like it was nothing. “No big deal.”
Luna forced herself to step forward, though her knees felt weak. “We’re looking for something,” she began hesitantly. “An ancient spell... something that could restore a god who’s fallen into darkness.”
Bella tilted her head, the playfulness fading for a moment. “Go on.”
“It’s Vishnu,” Elian added, stepping in to help Luna. “He’s fallen. And if we don’t stop him, everything will fall apart.”
Bella’s grin faltered. Her eyes sharpened as she leaned in slightly. “Vishnu, huh? Haven’t heard that name in a while.” She twirled her staff idly, lost in thought. “And you think you can save him?”
Luna nodded, though her throat felt tight. “We have to.”
Bella studied her, a smirk playing at her lips once more. “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that.” She leaned back, looking Luna up and down. “But tell me, little goddess, do you think you’re strong enough for this? Because from where I’m standing, you look... nervous.”
Luna’s heart raced. The taunt stung. “I—” she faltered, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I’ve protected her before, and I’ll do it again if I have to,” Elian said firmly, stepping beside her.
Bella chuckled. “Ah, there it is. The knight in shining armor.” She shrugged. “Well, whatever works for you two.”
Luna’s stomach twisted, the fear bubbling up again. Would she ever be able to stand on her own?
“I’m not here to hold her back,” Elian added, looking at Luna with a reassuring smile. “She’ll prove herself.”
Luna glanced at Elian, his confidence in her tugging at the pit of doubt deep within. *He believes in me, but do I believe in myself?* She clenched her fists, steeling herself. *I have to be ready. I have to face my fears. I’m not weak anymore. I’ll protect Elian, too.*
“Are you going to help us or not?” Elian pressed, his eyes focused on Bella.
Bella sighed, tapping her staff on the ground. “Alright, alright. You’ve piqued my interest. I’ll help. But this won’t be easy, and I’m not doing all the work for you. Especially not if you’re going to freeze up at the first sign of trouble, princess.”
Luna flinched, but she nodded. “I won’t freeze,” she whispered, her resolve firming inside her now.
Bella grinned again, spinning her staff with ease. “Good. Then let’s see what happens. The West has some surprises waiting for us.”
As they continued their journey, Luna couldn’t shake the feeling that no matter how far they went, her fear of failure would always be chasing her. But with Elian by her side, she would face it—one step at a time.
