Oak Grove School District

AdVENTURE STEM Program

2018/2019

MISSION

AdVENTURE’s mission is to engage all students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through relevant, rigorous curriculum so they will be responsible, active, global citizens in the digital age. AdVENTURE has a culture of high expectations where students form safe and strong relationships with teachers, peers, families, and the community.

VISION

AdVENTURE’s vision is to be a school that provides students with the foundation for lifelong learning and resiliency, adept in the use of critical thinking tools and 21st century skills.

GOALS

STANDARDS

At AdVENTURE we align our practice to cover the  Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards at each of the grade levels.

Our delivery model is Project Based Learning. All students are expected to participate in the different collaborative projects aimed at developing a strong foundation in critical thinking, college and career readiness within the framework of 21st century learning.

GRADING

There will be several factors used to determine the final grade of our students.  The following table specifies the weight of each component:

Consequences

Everything we do in life has consequences. If you choose to run a red light, you must accept the consequences that come with it (traffic ticket, taking someone’s life, crashing your car, etc.). Consequences are the things that happen to you when you choose not to obey a rule. This is what will happen if you choose to violate one of the classroom rules:

1st Offense

Warning & redirection.

Loss of privilege

2nd Offense

Class consequence & parent notified

3rd Offense

Office referral

Examples of offenses that will receive consequences:

Arguing

Disruptive

Food or Drink

Out of seat

Inappropriate Comment

Making Noises

Name Calling, Swearing,Teasing

Off Task

Physical Contact (throwing, hitting)

Failure to follow directions

Vandalizing

Tardy

Rule Violations

You start a clean slate every day, as long the offense is not habitual. Consequences will be enforced for multiple violations committed during that day. If you reach the 3rd step twice in a week,  we will have a meeting with all AdVENTURE teachers and to work out a student success plan. Time and location to be determined.

Rewards

We will recognize students who regularly choose responsible behavior by offering E2 referrals, patriot bucks, Patriot Pack prizes, etc.

Late Work Policy - Once a Zero, Always a Zero

Late work is not accepted at AdVENTURE. If a student receives a zero on the grade book it means that he/she made no attempt at turning the work in by the due date, or it was turned in with no name. This habit is detrimental to the student’s work ethic  and undermines our ability to help students progress. The very least we expect from a student is that he/she is able to write their name on a paper (or create and submit an electronic document), and turn it in by the due date. The student should see the teacher to identify areas of weakness and receive the help he/she needs.

On occasion, a student may receive a W (warning) for an assignment that was turned in on time, but is too incomplete to grade. These W assignments show up on Schoolloop as a zero on the zero count feature, but they are identified by a W on the progress report. It is up to the student in question to remedy the situation (by sending an Schoolloop Email with the work attached and letting the teacher know) within one week, otherwise the W will a permanent zero. (see Grade Modification Policy)

Grade Modification Policy

Please note that not all assignments are subject to grade modification. Non-regradeable assignments are at the discretion of the teacher and may include writing across the curriculum essays, notebook checks, unit tests, Rocketlit readings, re-worked assignments submitted more than one week after their due date, etc. When the grade for an assignment is not subject to the grade modification policy, it will be indicated in the Schoolloop post for the assignment.

Assignments:

If a student submits incomplete work on time, which means he/she does not have a zero for the assignment, a grade modification can be requested. This grade modification request must be made by Schoolloop email directly to the teacher, reference the assignment, due date and provide specifics about the items that were modified and wish to be re-graded.

Visit the following page and scroll down for video tutorials on how to request a grade modification and how to obtain the appropriate links for digital work.

Quizzes:

Quiz resubmissions are at the discretion of the teacher. If the teacher is allowing a resubmission, the student has one week from when the date the grade is posted to schedule and resubmit a quiz.

Re-takes will only be scheduled after school, not during classroom time.

Homework Policy

AdVENTURE is not a no Homework program. Although we shy away from traditional packets of homework, students are expected to complete weekly assignments (such as, but not limited to, blogs, readings and online activities), as well as participate in research and completion of projects that may take the work outside of the usual classroom hours.

AdVENTURE Acceptable Use Policy

AdVENTURE provides a wide range of technology resources for student use. These technology resources are to be used only for educational purposes. This agreement outlines appropriate use and prohibited activities when using all technology resources and electronic devices as defined by school administrators. Every student is expected to follow all of the rules and conditions listed, as well as those given verbally by teachers and administrators, and to demonstrate good citizenship and ethical behavior at all times.

The OGSD network uses a filtering system to track and monitor all computer and Internet use on the network. The system is designed to prevent access to educationally inappropriate sites. It is important to understand that no filtering system is perfect. Due to the nature of the Internet and evolving technology, even with supervision, we cannot guarantee that students will not reach an inappropriate site. It is the student’s responsibility to report any inappropriate site to the teacher.

Below are examples, but not an exhaustive list, of online conduct that may constitute a violation of federal and/or state criminal laws relating to cyber crimes:

Criminal Acts: These include, but are not limited to, “hacking” or attempting to access computer systems without authorization, threatening/harassing email, cyber-stalking, vandalism, unauthorized tampering with computer systems, using misleading domain names, using another person’s identity and/or identity fraud.

Libel Laws: Publicly defaming people through publishing material on the Internet, email, etc…

Copyright Violations: Copying, selling or distributing copyrighted material without the express written permission of the author or publisher (users should assume that all materials available on the Internet are protected by copyright), engaging in plagiarism (using another's words or ideas as your own).
