In the Beginning

A parallel to the Hebrews Exodus is found at the Hyksos story. The Hyksos ruled over the Nile Delta in the 2nd millennium BCE until expelled by the Egyptians. The Hyksos and the Israelites were both Canaanites and connected to the land of Canaan. The Greek author Hecataeus of Abdera (c.320 BCE) wrote a history of Egypt in which he told how the Egyptians blamed a plague on foreigners and expelled them from the country, whereupon Moses, their leader, took them to Canaan. The most famous Greek-era mention of an exodus-like event is by the Egyptian historian Manetho (3rd century BCE), known from two quotations by the 1st century CE Jewish historian Josephus Flavius. In the first, Manetho describes the Hyksos, their lowly origins in Asia, their dominion over and expulsion from Egypt, and their subsequent foundation of the city of Jerusalem and its temple. Josephus (not Manetho) identifies the Hyksos with the Jews. There is disagreement among scholars about this theory. (wiki)

The Weekly Riddle

How many Jews are in the world?

(Guess before you take a peek. The answer is on the back page.)

From the Rabbis and Beyond…

Rav Ovadia Yosef z”l

Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

A well known Jewish tradition about Olam HaBa – the “next world” – is that the righteous of this world will be rewarded with a meal consisting of shor ha-bor and livyatan – wild ox and leviathan. As a continuation of the stories of the sea that opened this perek, we find the source for part of this tradition.

Rabba quotes Rabbi Yoḥanan as teaching that in the future God will serve a meal for the righteous consisting of the meat of the leviathan, based on a passage in Iyyov (40:30) that is understood to mean that the Torah scholars will feast on it. The Gemara continues that the meat that is not used for the feast will then be sold in the marketplace in Jerusalem. The Maharal argues that all references to the leviathan are to be understood metaphorically. The leviathan is the spiritual force, that is, the force connecting God and the physical world that He created.

Eating the leviathan hints to the deep personal connection that a righteous individual develops with the spiritual.

Time to Smile

...and maybe it was all about using the magic word:

Moshe: “Please, let my people go.”

Par’o: “Sure, go ahead Mo.

Moshe: “Thank you Par.”

Par’o: “And take whatever you need: cattle, supplies..”

Moshe: “Thanks bro.”

Par’o: “And don’t forget water!”

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Mila NOT baParasha - Tsav  / צב

The smallest turtle is the speckled padloper tortoise of South Africa. It is commonly known as the speckled tortoise. It measures no more than 8 cm (3.1 in) in length and weighs about 140 g (4.9 oz). Two other species of small turtles are the American mud turtles and musk turtles that live in an area that ranges from Canada to South America. The shell length of many species in this group is less than 13 cm (5.1 in) in length. (wiki)

***

The Mila/word in the parasha which sounds closer is Tsaw - צו, meaning “order!’” But if you pronounce “ו” in the Sephardic/Biblical way as “waw” instead of the Ashkenazi/Israeli way as “ vav” then there is a clear difference between צב (turtle) and צו (to give an order or a command).

Parasha: Tsav - Vayikra (Leviticus) Tsav 6:18:36

Historical Context: Bnei Israel's 40 year journey continues. Location: Midbar Sinai. Creation Time: 2448 (approx. 1476 bce). Parashort: The priests were given instructions as to their function in the Tabernacle and more about the sacrifices they were to supervise or bring. Dedication ceremonies for the new Tabernacle were begun. (TorahFroductions.com)

Haftara: Shabbat Hagadol - Mal’akhi, 3:4-24

Haftit: The Prophet Malachi predicts that Hashem will be pleased by B’nai Yisrael’s future sacrifices, but for now (in Malachi’s day) Hashem finds fault with B’nai Yisrael’s wrongdoings and Hashem will deal firmly with them. Hashem says that if you keep the laws of ma’aser (giving one tenth of your profits to charity) you will be rewarded so much, that your lips will become raw from saying... “Baruch Hashem “, “Thank You Hashem, I have a lot to be grateful for”. The great Day of Judgment is coming; the people who went away from Hashem will be punished and the people who moved closer to Hashem will be rewarded. Hashem then firmly suggests keeping the Torah. The Haftorah concludes with a promise that one day in the future, the prophet Eliyahu will reappear. Eliyahu will be the predecessor to the Mashiah.

Connection to the Parasha: The Shabbat before Pesah is called Shabbat Hagadol, the Great Shabbat, because it was the Shabbat preceding the awesome Yetzi'at MitzraimExodus from Egypt. Similarly, Mal’akhi, the prophet from whose book the Haftarah is selected from, speaks of the arrival of the “Yom Hagadol”, The Great Day, upon the arrival of Mashiah. (haftorahman)

Speechless in the Parasha - Tsav

The parasha continues with the description of various sacrifices which include animals as well as grain products, such as bread, matsa, crackers, etc. Can you identify in the text any vegetables or fruits which may be used with the sacrifices?

What's in a name? Shabbat Hagadol – Why?

This Shabbat, before Pesah, is called "Shabbat Hagadol" (the "Great Shabbat") for a number of reasons:

1) The primary event commemorated on this Shabbat is a great miracle which occurred on this day, several days before the Exodus. Bnei Yisrael were commanded by Moshe to take a lamb and tie it to their bedposts on Shabbat, the 10th day of Nissan, five days before they were to leave Egypt. When the Egyptians inquired by the Jews why they were buying lambs en masse, they were told that these lambs were intended for the Paschal Offering, which would be sacrificed in preparation of the Plague of the Firstborn. For some reason, this information rattled the Egyptian firstborn, who immediately insisted that Paro grant Bnei Yisrael the liberty they demanded. When Par’o refused their request, the Egyptian firstborn waged war with Par’o's army, and many Egyptians who were guilty of atrocities against the Jews were killed on that day.

2) On this day it was demonstrated that the Egyptians were powerless against Bnei Yisrael. They must have been weakened by the fact that the Bnei Yisrael were planning to slaughter lambs, an Egyptian deity.

3) Some suggest that this Shabbat earned the title "Gadol," because it is the day when the rabbis traditionally deliver extensive lectures about the laws of Passover, and pontificate about the lessons to be learned from the holiday.

4) The Haftarah read in many communities on this Shabbat speaks of the coming of Mashiah, referring to the day of his arrival as the "Yom Hashem Hagadol V'hanora" -- the "great" and awesome day of G-d. (Chabad.org)

Rega’ shel Ivrit - רגע של עברית

No doubt that G-d put a bug in the Egyptians’ computer system, otherwise there is no way to explain how the Hebrews left Egypt unharmed enmass. So, next time you have a bug in your computer remember that the Hebrew word is “תֶּקֶל - tekel” and remember Egypt.

Rav Question - שאלת רב

How much of the Hagada should we read, when we come back from shul at 8:30pm; or, can we first eat and then complete the the entire Magid section?

Riddle Solved

The world's core Jewish population in early 2015 was estimated at 14.31 million people (around 70% of the world's "enlarged" Jewish population).

Demographer Sergio DellaPergola proposed an "extended" Jewish population, including people identifying as partly Jewish and non-Jews with Jewish parents, that numbers 17.3 million globally. His "enlarged" Jewish population figure further includes non-Jewish members of Jewish households and totals 20.2 million. Finally, the total number of people who hold or are eligible for Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return — defined as anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent, and who does not actively profess any other religion — is estimated at around 23 million, of which 6.6 million are currently living in Israel.
