In 1934 de László was commissioned by Sir John Cotterell [4183] to paint pendant portraits of Lady Cotterell and her husband [4187]. The artist struggled with the composition of her portrait and put aside a three-quarter length [112618] and the present portrait before completing a finished portrait to his satisfaction [4189].
