Assessment Settings Overview & Assessment Creation (Test, Quiz, or Homework)

All of our template courses already have pre-made homework assessments for every section of the book you are using. Our default settings on these assessments give every student essentially unlimited attempts on each question, giving every student an opportunity to get a 100% on their assignment.

DEFAULT ASSESSMENT SETTINGS

  1. To view the assessment the same way a student would see it, click on the assessment name. When you click on a day in the Calendar where assessments are due, you will see an expansion box below the Calendar. Clicking on the assessment name here goes into the assessment the same way a student would see it.

…or click the assessment name in the Chapter folder.

  1. After clicking on the assessment name, you would click Start to start the assessment and view it the same way a student would. If there is a mini-lecture video or Video Lessons available for the section, you would click the + icon to view the video(s):

  1. You can view videos on each question by clicking Video (XYZ Textbooks template courses will have ebook links on every question, and some questions may also have written examples you can click on as well):

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 and options.

  1. Students can skip to any question they want by clicking Question 1, which will initiate a dropdown menu where they can pick any question. In the below screenshot I used the dropdown to move to Question 3. Students can also use the left and right arrows to cycle through questions. In the upper-right corner, the 3 next to a circle indicates the student has 3 attempts at this version of the question, and the 99 number indicates the student can try up to 99 other versions of the question:

  1. Students can enter their answer in the answer boxes, then click Submit Question:

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with answer in the answer box.

In this case I can see that I got the problem wrong, per the red x and the 0 out of 1 points. I can also see that I now have 2 more attempts at this version of the question per the 2 in the upper right corner:

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with answer in the answer box marked incorrect.

I change my answer and hit Submit Question again:

I got it wrong again:

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with the new answer in the answer box marked incorrect.

...now I change my answers for my last attempt on the question, and click Submit Question:

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with a third answer in the answer box.

Because that was my final of 3 tries on that version of the question, I now can see the answers by clicking on the key icon next to each answer box:

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with the third answer in the answer box marked incorrect and the answer key option showing.Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with the third answer in the answer box marked incorrect and the correct answer showing.

I could then click Get a similar question to generate a new version of this question:

Image showing assessment 4.1 question 3 with the third answer in the answer box marked incorrect and the correct answer showing along with the Get a similar question option.

I would then have 3 more attempts at this new version, and the ability to try 98 other similar versions. This is what we mean by our default settings being basically unlimited attempts, 3 at a time.

ADJUSTING ASSESSMENT SETTINGS

  1. Now that you better understand the default settings for your premade assessments, if you want to make any adjustments to those settings you would click on the Settings link. For example, if I wanted to view or edit the Settings for 4.2, I would click Settings under the calendar:

Image of course homescreen including calendar and assignments listed below.

…or by clicking the gear icon next to 4.2 in the Chapter folder, and select Settings:

  1. You can choose to hide this assessment by choosing Hide, or adjust the start and due dates by adjusting the Available After and Available Until dates. Practice mode allows students to enter past due assessments for ungraded practice. To turn this off, uncheck that box:

  1. The Core Options are where you can edit the number of attempts. Our default settings are displayed below, and this setup gives the students 3 attempts on each version of a question, while they can try up to 100 versions:

Image of default Core Options for an assessment.

The Submission Type has two options, homework-style and quiz-style:

Image of Core Options and Submission type options expanded.

Switching this to Quiz-style brings up new options, such as how many versions of the quiz you want to allow the students to take, how many tries on each question you want the student to have, and if you give the student multiple versions of the quiz. You have the option to keep the last score, the best score, or the average score using the Score to Keep dropdown:

Image of Core Options and Submission type set to Quiz-style.

The other editable fields in the Core Options folder allow you to decide when you want a student to see their scores, when/if you want students to see the correct answers, and when you want the student to be able to view their grade. The final option in this folder, Gradebook Category, is by default in the Online Homework category. If you created Gradebook categories in the gradebook, use the dropdown to select the appropriate gradebook category for this assignment. For more information in gradebook categories, reference Step 6 in this document - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kJpfpRcATLUDcSzM_HxQ6UlfHz5RjIngNGjDOAh6CDQ/edit

  1. The Additional Display Options folder allows you to update the Calendar icon, which is the name displayed on the calendar for the assessment. This defaults to the section number for the book you are using. Shuffle item order, by default, is set to No. If you want to shuffle the order of the questions in the assessment for each student, you can do so here:

Image of Additional Display Options with Provide "Show Work" dropdown set to No.

The Provide “Show Work” boxes option, by default, is set to No. If you want the students to show their work on each question, you can do so here. For example, if I change this to During Assessment, and Essay:

Image of Additional Display Options with Provide "Show Work" dropdown set to During assessment.

an essay box will appear for every question as shown below. Students can copy and paste their work from a document. If you chose file upload, they can upload a document:

Image of 4.2 question 1 with Show work box displayed.

The Options boxes in the Additional Display Options folder are options that you can select as you desire. Lock student out of the rest of the course until submitted means if you check this box students can’t access any other assignment until this is completed. Make hard to print means students would have a hard time printing this assignment. All students same version of questions turns off randomization, and every student would get the same version of questions.  All items same random seed and, Suppress default score result display should not be touched and should be left unchecked. Show question categories in question Details (if defined) should not be touched and should be left checked:

  1. The Time Limit and Access Control folder is where you can edit your LatePass settings. By default, LatePasses are allowed on every assessment. If you don’t want to allow LatePasses, you would uncheck the box to the left of Allow LatePasses after the due date. For more information on LatePasses, reference this document - https://docs.google.com/document/d/12cU0ylbDM8T7-2u3yDt7uopF0Cpm1KgE_a71O4b34lQ/edit

The Time Limit box allows you to set a time limit for the assessment. Require password allows you to add a password to the assessment. Show based on another assessment allows you to set conditional release of the availability of the assessment. In this example, you can only get to 1.2 if you get an 80% on 1.1:

  1. The Help and Hints folder allows you to turn on or off the video, ebook, or hint links that show when students take an assessment. By default, the videos, ebook, and hint links are available. To turn them off, uncheck the boxes. To turn on one of our GeoGebra calculators for an assessment, check the box:

  1. The Grading and Feedback folder allows you to change whether or not you want this assessment to count as a grade with the Count dropdown:
