The majority of the sapient races there had not yet come to understand the full extent of the universe. While they understood that the flat surface they stood upon was "land,” they did not comprehend that at the same time, they were standing upon a sphere known as a "planet.”
そこに棲息する種族の大半は知性体として、世界の構造を知るほどの段階に至ってなかったからだ。彼らの言葉において、踏みしめているものは“大地”という平面であり、“惑星”という球体ではなかった。
Perhaps, there were beings lurking about who understood such concepts as “planets.” But whether one--or many, they had never shared their knowledge with the less advanced.
より正確に言うならば、惑星という概念を有している者が、いずこかに潜んでいたのかもしれない。だが、彼が──もしくは彼らがその認識を他者に分け与えようとすることはなかった。
Therefore, it was not yet "Planet Mira" to these creatures. It was simply "huge land that go ooon and ooon."
だからそこは、まだ“惑星ミラ”ではない。“広くて広くて嫌になっちゃうほど広い地面だも”でしかなかった。
"Ah-, really does go ooon and ooon"
「あー、ほんとに広くて広くて嫌になっちゃうですも」
Muttered a walking potato. Well, it resembles the potatoes of this land, but it is no potato. It is a young boy of a race called the Nopon, named Tatsu.
歩行するイモがそうつぶやいた。いや、この地原産のイモによく似てはいるが、それはイモではない。ノポン人という種族の少年だ。名前はタツ。
"Look who talking! Tatsu decided we go out this far!"
「仕方ないも！ こんな遠くまで連れ出したタツが悪いも！」
While it may look like a potato is responding, it too is no potato. Rather, it is a green-skinned Nopon resembling a melon, another young boy named Ron.
応えたのも、やはりイモに似ているが、イモではない。むしろメロンに似た緑色の肌を持つノポン人の少年、ロンである。
Together, the two of them hail from the Nopon of the Dudunga Caravan. The trader Nopon race, outside of one small case, are nomads. Their caravans consist of anywhere from a handful to a hefty helping of families, and they spend their lives following one journey to the next. The things they sell are quite varied, ranging from animals, to plants, even to handcrafted goods. Their unique Nopon items are also important products of theirs.
二人はともに、ドドンガ・キャラバンに属するノポン人だ。交易種族であるノポンは、一部の例外を除いて、定住の地を持たない。数～数十家族でキャ ラバンを組んで、旅から旅の暮らしを続けている。扱う品は様々だ。動物や植物、工芸品に美術品。ノポン秘伝の品々も、重要な売り物である。
If there is profit in trade, there is loss as well. They receive charity from the more gentle races due to their adorable appearance, while the less kindly races take to swindling them. Nevertheless, they are able to journey about as they please.
交易は、得をすることもあれば、損をすることもある。愛くるしい容姿をいかして親切な種族に恵んでもらうこともあれば、悪辣な種族にカモにされることもあるからだ。それでも概ね、
気楽な旅を続ける程度の余裕はできる。
But their journeys never end. They wander off on a whim, staying somewhere if they can turn a profit, or freeloading in the cities of other races. Among them are caravans headed for the supposed sacred land of Nopon legend, who appear to be wandering aimlessly in search of it.
彼らの旅に終わりはない。気の向くままに放浪し、稼げる場所があればしばらく滞在し、異種族の街にイソーローすることもある。中には、ノポン伝説の聖地とやらを目指して、あてもない探索を続けているキャラバンもあるらしい。
The Dudunga Caravan is a normal caravan. They have been that way from the first generation Dudunga all the way to whatever generation they're up to now, but their current leader is strangely reliable for a Nopon.
もっともドドンガ・キャラバンは、フツーのキャラバンだ。初代のドドンガから、もはや何代目かわからなくなってしまったが、現在のリーダーがノポンらしからぬほど堅実なノポンだからである。
By traveling fertile lands with an abundance of plant life, and relying on friendly races to exterminate any hostile monsters, the Dudunga Caravan has persevered. However, even in such peaceful travels, there is an adventurous youth who says things like "Can't stand being sooooo booooored!" This curiosity-filled boy, Tatsu, inviting his close friend Ron, set out on a scouting mission.
植物が豊かに実る地を渡っていき、敵対するモンスターがいれば優しい種族に甘えて退治してもらい、ドドンガ・キャラバンは旅を続けていく。だが、 そんな穏やかな旅も、好奇心旺盛な少年にとっては、「退屈で退屈でたまらないですも！」ということになる。キャラバンでもっとも好奇心豊かな少年であるタ ツは、親友のロンを誘って、偵察に出た。
Scouting is done to stock up on food and things to trade, as well as finding much-needed people to trade with. The young Nopon are surely up to the task.
偵察とは、食料や交易の材料を仕入れるための行為であり、交易相手を見つけるという大事な目的もになっている。少年であろうと、積極的にこなしていかなくてはならない任務なのだ。
Although, unlike the (self-titled)scouting master, Tatsu, Ron does not participate in such errands.
もっとも、偵察の達人（自称）であるタツと違って、ロンはそうした任務を果たしたことがない。
"Ron’s specialty be, guarding house!"
「ロンが得意なのは、オレんち警備だも！」
He says, never venturing outside of the safety of his own tent.
などと言い張って、自分の家であるテントにいつも引きこもっているのだ。
"If Ron keep that up, never become adult Nopon! Tatsu help show Ron how scouting done!"
「そんなんじゃ、いつまでたっても一人前のノポンになれないですも！ タツが偵察のコツを教えてやるですも！」
"Must turn down offer! As house guarder, Ron plan to give lifetime of service!"
「お断りだも！ ロンは自宅警備員として生涯をまっとうするつもりだも！」
Ron declined with these words, as Tatsu tried to drag him outside. But his resistance was in vain, and he came tumbling out of his own tent. -Or rather, he was kicked out.
外の世界に引っ張り出そうとするタツに対して、ロンはそう言って抵抗した。だが、そんな抵抗も虚しく、ロンは自宅テントの外に放り出された。──というより、蹴り出された。
"How long Ron plan to act like spoiled child relying on mamapon! She not feed Ron forever! Hurry and become adult, and let mamapon rest!"
「あんた、いつまでカーチャンに甘えてるつもりだも！ カーチャンだって、いつまでもロンを食わしてやれないも！ はやく一人前のノポンになって、カーチャンを楽させるも！」
A sound argument. It embodied the sacred teachings passed down from the ‘hom hom’ of Nopon legends--"If man will not work, he shall not eat."
正論である。ノポンの伝説に語られる“ホムホム”という種族が伝えたという、尊い教えの言葉──『働かざる者食うべからず』。それを体現した言葉である。
"Guess it no use. At this rate, Ron be elected legendary heropon. Must avoid that"
「──仕方ないも。このままだと、伝説の勇者に選ばれてしまうも。それだけは避けたいも」
Said Ron, driven out of his cozy tent, and he accepted Tatsu as a travel companion. Grudgingly, reluctantly, unwillingly. Nevertheless, he took that first step.
帰るべきテントから追い出されたロンは、そう言って、タツへの同行を受け入れた。しぶしぶ、イヤイヤ、不承不承。そんな感じではあったが、それでも貴重な第一歩だ。
"Relax. If Ron leave everything to Tatsu, all be okay. Surely finish scouting mission, and relieve mamapon"
「心配ないですも。タツにまかせておけば、いいですも。一緒に偵察任務を果たして、カーチャンを安心させてあげるですも」
"Y-yeah, Ron got it!"
「う、うん、わかったも！」
Thus, the two young Nopon set out to scout. But what they weren’t aware of, was that they had also taken their first steps into fate’s unforgiving stomach.
こうして、二人の少年ノポンは偵察に出た。それが過酷な運命への第一歩であることを、彼らはまだ知らない。
They were carefree lads at the start of their trip. They ate plants and bugs they found along the way, spitting out the bad tasting ones, and saving the sweet ones in their Noponpacks. Whatever they didn't eat, they would bring back and use for trading.
偵察も最初の頃は、気楽なものだった。道々に生えている草木を食べ、虫を食べる。まずかったら吐き出して、美味しかったらノポン袋に貯め込んでいく。食べきれない分は持って帰って、交易の足しにする。
"Hoo, so tasty~!"
「ふう、美味しかったですも！」
Tatsu and Ron were stuffed. The had made a great feast of the small bugs living in the forest--bugs that will come to be called ‘Bloated Geckos’ by a race with a penchant for naming everything they see--, savoring the soft and flabby blubber that lay beneath their hard skin.
タツもロンも満足そうだ。森の中に棲む小さな虫──なんにでも名前をつけるのが好きな種族が、後にマンプクヤモリと名付ける──は、硬い皮の下にぶよぶよとした脂肪の塊があり、ノポンにとっては大ごちそうなのだ。
However, the law of the land is ‘survival of the fittest,’ and the world must adhere to the order of the food chain. If the Nopon feast, so too can they be feasted upon. The two boys had lost their way chasing the geckos into the forest, and were now being eyed up by an enormous carnivorous creature.
だが、この地のルールは弱肉強食。世はなべて食物連鎖という黄金律の支配下にある。ノポンが食べるものもいれば、ノポンを食べるものもいるのだ。美味しいマンプクヤモリを追いかけているうちに森に迷い込んだタツとロンは、肉食の巨大生物に目をつけられてしまった。
"T-t-t-t-tatsu! It looking right at us!"
「タ、タタタ、タツ！ あいつ、こっちを見てるも！」
It was a creature that would later be called a ‘Tapenta,’ which hides itself along the ground using the flowers that grow on its shell. It was thanks to that, that the Nopon had only just realized how close they had come to it.
後にタペンタと名付けられることになるその生物は、甲羅の表面に草花を生やして地面に潜んでいる。そのため、その存在に気づかないまま、すぐ近くに踏み込んでしまったのだ。
The Tapenta rose, drooling at the sight of Tatsu and Ron. The look it gave them was the same look they had given the Bloated Geckos.
起き上がり、獰猛な仕草でタツとロンを見るタペンタ。その視線は、二人がマンプクヤモリを見る目とまったく同じだった。
"No look away! It attack if senses fear!"
「目をそらしちゃダメですも！ 弱みを見せたら襲ってくるですも！」
"O-okay!"
「わ、わかったも！」
Without breaking eye contact with the Tapenta, they slowly stepped backwards. However, that was the shallow logic of the Nopon. They were nothing more than a potato and melon to the massive beast. Not caring whether they showed fear, the Tapenta leapt at the two as they scattered, panicking.
二人はタペンタから目をそらさないようにして、後ずさりした。だが、しょせんはノポンの浅知恵。タペンタにとって、彼らは手足が生えて歩くだけの イモとメロンに過ぎない。弱みを見せないようにするとかしないとか、そんなことにおかまいなく、タペンタは二人に飛びかかってきた。あわてて左右に分かれて走り出すタツとロン。
"Ah! Ron not taste good! If monster have to eat one of us, eat Tatsu!"
「わー、オレは美味しくないも！ 食うならタツの方にするも！」
"Like Ron say! Tatsu incredibly juicy delicacy--huh?"
「ロンの言う通りですも！ タツはとってもジューシーで食べたら絶品ですも──あれ？」
Perhaps it was listening to their conversation, or perhaps it just prefered potatoes to melons. The Tapenta chose to pursue Tatsu.
二人の言葉をちゃんと聞き取ったのか、それとも単にメロンよりイモの方が好物だったのか。タペンタは、タツの方を追いかけてきた。
"Aaaaaah-! Monster shouldn’t believe everything Nopons say~~!"
「うわー、お前、ノポンの言うことを簡単に信じるんじゃないですも～～っ！」
Realizing the danger was gone, Ron stood rooted to the spot. And, taking the valuable lesson left behind by his friend to heart, muttered in the direction of the screaming.
危険が去ったことを悟ったロンは、その場に立ち止まった。そして、友が残してくれた貴重な教訓を胸に、悲痛な叫びが聞こえてくる方向に向かって、つぶやくのだった。
"--Tatsu, Ron never forget noble snackrifice. Take lesson Tatsu teach him, and never leave house again. Outside world scary."
「──タツ、お前の犠牲は忘れないも。オマエが身をもって教えてくれた教訓を胸に、オレはこれからも自宅警備員として生きていくも。やっぱり外の世界は怖いだも」
Thus, Ron left to return home. Although, being a Nopon, he did not have the slightest sense of direction, and after being chased around by the monster, finding his way back home would take an enormous effort. He wandered off in the opposite direction of the Dudunga Caravan, and several days later, finally collapsed. Lucky for him, he was taken in by some kind aliens, and became their pet guard-Nopon until the ends of his days--but that's another tale in and of itself.
そして、ロンは歩き出した。だが、方向音痴のノポンにとって、モンスターに追い回された後、もとのキャラバンに帰るのは至難の業である。ロンはド ドンガ・キャラバンとは逆方向に放浪してしまい、数日後、ついに行き倒れてしまう。その後、運良くそこに通りがかった親切な種族に拾われ、その異星人のペット兼自宅警備員として、残りの生涯を送ることになるのだが──それはまた、別の物語である。
"Waaaaaaah! Why so persistent! Monster give up already!"
「うわぁぁぁっ、お前しつこいですも！ いい加減あきらめるですも！」
Shouted Tatsu as he ran from the beast. But the Tapenta would not give up, no matter how far he fled.
そう叫びながら、タツは逃げ回る。だが、タペンタはいつまでたってもあきらめようとはしない。
"T-t-tatsu understand! Unable to stop because monster captivated by Tatsu's charming body! Such lovely body, has amazing balance between chub and elasticity. If cooked over fire, smell very aromatic~. Tatsu drooling just thinking about it--wait, why Tatsu drooling about eating self!?"
「むむむ、無理もないですも！ これというのも、タツの魅惑のボディが魅力的だからいけないんですも──。ああ、たっぷり脂がのって、適度な弾力と しまりの釣り合いがとれた美しいボディ。炭火焼きにしたら、とっても香ばしいですも。想像してたらヨダレが出てきたも──って、自分のお肉にヨダレたらし てどうするですも！」
Fantasizing while running is not recommended, because you're not paying attention to the ground beneath you. At that moment, Tatsu's foot got caught in a metal object hidden within the bushes.
走りながら、想像にふけるのはオススメしない。何故なら、足元がお留守になるからだ。この時のタツも、草むらに巧妙に隠されていた金属の物体に、脚を引っかけてしまった。
"Whaaaaaaaaaa!"
「うわぁぁぁぁですも！」
Like a potato from a basket, Tatsu went rolling along. But this was fortunate for him, for just before he took his tumble, the Tapenta's jaws were preparing to snap closed around him. Furthermore, in the instant after having failed to catch its prey, the Tapenta was scorched from every direction by concentrated laser fire.
カゴからこぼれたイモのように、コロコロと転がっていくタツ。だが、この時はそれが幸運だったようだ。転倒する直前、タペンタの顎門（あぎと）が いままさにタツを捉えようとしていたのだから。しかも、美味しい獲物をかじりそこなったタペンタの全身は次の瞬間、四方から集中してきたレーザーに灼かれた。
The metal object Tatsu had tripped over was a trap that someone had set down. There were also four laser rifles set around the trap, which had roasted the Tapenta alive.
タツが踏みつけた金属の物体は、何者かがしかけた罠だったのである。その場に仕掛けられていた四門のレーザー銃は、タペンタをこんがりと美味しそうに焼き上げた。
"Wheeeew~, all finished"
「ふ～～～、食った食ったですも」
After devouring everything but the Tapenta's shell, Tatsu sprawled out on the ground like a fluffy X. Although, with his short limbs, he wasn’t really “X” shaped...but since this is a short story, you can just pretend he was.
タペンタの丸焼きを完食し、残った甲羅の前でタツは大の字に寝転がった。手足が短いので“大”という文字の姿からはほど遠いのだが、小説でもあるので、そこは見逃してもらいたい。
At any rate, Tatsu had eaten the entire monster, which was several times bigger than him. How he managed to fit everything into his tiny Nopon body, is one of the biggest of the 99 Mysteries of the Nopon.
とにかく、タツは自分の数倍もあるモンスターを食べきった。小さい体のどこに入るのか、それはノポン九十九の神秘のひとつに数えられる、大いなる謎である。
Somehow or another, Tatsu had survived the most historically dangerous thing a Nopon could ever experience. But in his frenzy to finish his meal, there was something he forgot. The trap that saved his life-and who had set it.
ともかく、タツはノポン史に残る危機を乗り切った。だが、本当なら食事に熱中するよりも、考えるべきであった。自分の危機を救った罠──それを仕掛けたのが何者であったのかを。
"--This thing, ate our catch!"
「──コイツ、俺タチノ獲物ヲ食ッチマッタヨウダゾ！」
"Foolish child!"
「フザケタ小僧ダ！」
Upon hearing the voices, Tatsu snapped out of the post-meal coma he was enjoying. It seemed their translation device’s ability was rather poor, spitting out raspy words.
気持ちよく食後の眠りをタンノーしていたタツを目覚めさせたのは、そんな声だった。翻訳機の性能が低いのだろうか、聞きづらくて耳障りな言葉だ。
Upon rising, Tatsu was greeted with the sight of two aliens pointing rifles at him. Since they spoke words and held weapons, they were without a doubt intelligent lifeforms. But no matter how you looked at them, they only appeared to be wild beasts standing on their hind legs.
起き上がったタツは、二人の異星人が自分に銃を向けている光景を見た。言葉をしゃべり、武器を手にしているのだから、相手は知的生命体に間違いない。だが、その容姿はどう見ても、なにかの間違いで後ろ足で立ち上がってしまった猛獣──にしか見えなかった。
They are members of a race called the Vyers, who had only shown up in these lands very recently. Tatsu had never seen nor heard of them before.
彼らは、バイアス人と呼ばれる種族である。この地にやってきたのはごく最近のことであり、タツはこれまで見たことも聞いたこともなかった。
"Y-you guys, what you want with Tatsu!?"
「お、お前たち、タツになんの用ですも！？」
"You, steal prey from trap. So, take you instead!"
「オ前、オレタチノ罠ニカカッタ獲物ヲ横取リシタ。ダカラ、オ前ヲ代ワリニ獲物ニスル！」
Said the Vyers, as they grabbed at him. Tatsu took off in a hurry, becoming fast food once again. It was the Vyers chasing him this time, rather than the Tapenta, but they were all the same to him.
言うと、二人のバイアス人はタツにつかみかかってきた。あわてて逃げるタツ。追いかけっこふたたび。タペンタがバイアス人に代わっただけで、また同じことの繰り返しである。
The lesson to be learned here is, don’t let your guard down around here if you want to live for long. Unfortunately for the Nopon, their tiny brains can’t always keep that lesson inside.
この場を生き延びたら、危険な場所で一度助かったからといって、油断するのはやめましょう──という教訓を得るはずだ。もっともノポンの脳みそは小さいので、そんなことに記憶容量を割く余裕があるのか、疑問ではあるのだが。
"Alas, still Tatsu’s destiny to be chased by beasts, hungering for handsome body like his. If beasts want to cook Tatsu, let beautiful girls cook him instead! They treat Tatsu’s body with care---!"
「ああ、やっぱりタツのような美味しそうな美少年は、野獣のようなレンチューに狙われ続ける運命なんですも。どうせなら、こんな奴らじゃなくて、美少女にきちんと下ごしらえされた上で、丁寧に調理されたかったですも──！」
Thought Tatsu as he fled. Luckily for him, the Vyers were not particularly fleet of foot. The nimble Nopon fare far better inside the complicated forest.
そんなことを考えながら、走り続けるタツ。幸い、バイアス人はあまり敏捷な種族ではなかった。入り組んだ森の中では、すばしっこいノポンの方に分があるようだ。
"S-s-somehow manage to lose them!"
「むむむ、なんだかあいつらをまくことができたようですも！」
Free of his Vyers pursuers, Tatsu realised he had ended up near the Dudunga Caravan’s encampment.
執拗に追いかけてきたバイアス人たちを引き離したタツは、そこがドドンガ・キャラバンの宿営地に近い場所であることに気づいた。
"--Huh, this place look familiar somehow!"
「──あれ、ここなんだか、見覚えがあるですも！」
Walking through the forest, he recalled the features of the terrain. Sure enough, there was a cliff just ahead that the caravan could be seen from.
森の中を歩いているうちに、見覚えのある地形に出た。たしか、この先へ進めば、崖があって、そこからキャラバンが見えるはず。
Tatsu reached deep inside his shallow pool of memories for clues on where to go. Eventually, he remembered the clifftop view.
タツは小さな脳みそをフル活動させて、記憶をたどった。そして、崖の上にたどりついた。
--However, all that awaited Tatsu over that horizon was the dawn of a cruel, new fate. As he drew closer to the cliff, he could see streaks of black smoke rising.
──だが、それは新たなる残酷な運命の幕開けに他ならなかった。崖に近づいたタツが最初に見たものは、立ち上る幾筋もの黒煙だった。
And when he finally stood upon the edge of the cliff, the cruelly burnt state of the camp entered his vision. All of the Dudunga Caravan tents had been scorched and trampled, but Tatsu could not see any sign of his family, or any Nopons at all.
そして、崖の端に立つと、無残に焼き払われた宿営地の様子が視界に入ってきた。ドドンガ・キャラバンのテントはいずれも焼かれるか、なぎ倒されていた。だが、タツの家族を含めたノポンたちの姿は、そこには見えない。
"No way--!"
「そんな──！」
Had the Nopon of the Dudunga Caravan all fled somewhere, or were they kidnapped? Since he could not see any slain Nopon, he did not believe they were killed. At least, he hoped they were not.
ドドンガ・キャラバンのノポンたちは、どこかへ逃げ去っていったのか、それとも連れ去られたのか。死んだノポンの姿は見えないから、全滅させられたのだとは思えない。思いたくない。
Maybe, they were sitting in the stomachs of those gun-toting Vyers--no, he couldn't think like that.
まして、銃を手に歩き回っているバイアス人たちの腹の中に──などとは、考えたくもない。
"Everyone--surely, surely safe--?"
「みんな──きっと、きっと無事ですも──？」
Tatsu muttered to himself, as the faces of his family and friends floated through his thoughts. Just then, something hard pressed against the back of his head.
家族や仲間、ひとりひとりの姿を思い出しながら、タツはつぶやいた。そして、その後頭部に硬いものが押し当てられた。
Turning, he saw the muzzle of a gun thrust towards him by the Vyers. The ferocious brute's eyes narrowed.
振り向いたタツが見たものは、銃口をつきつけている二人のバイアス人。獰猛な獣の目が細められる。
"Finally catch furball. Had us running all over--"
「ヤット追イツイタゼ。サンザン逃ゲマワリヤガッテ──」
Tatsu didn't have any stamina or willpower left to resist. The two Vyers tied him up, and tossed him into a basket.
タツにはもう、気力も体力も残っていなかった。二人のバイアス人は、抵抗しようともしないタツを縛り上げ、カゴの中に放り込んだ。
They set out side by side, each holding one end of a pole on their shoulder, with the basket hung between them. Holding their delicious trophy inside, of course.
二人のバイアス人は前後に並んで歩き出した。互いの肩の間には棒が渡され、そこにはカゴが吊されている。もちろん、中には美味しそうな獲物が捕らわれている。
From beneath his circular glasses, tears began to flow. Now a prisoner, Tatsu wept. But his tears were not shed for his imminent devouring, rather they were shed at the thought that he would never again be able to meet with the Nopon of his caravan.
丸い眼鏡の下から、涙がこぼれてくる。囚われの身で、タツは泣いた。もうすぐ食べられるであろう自分の運命を呪って、ではない。散り散りになってしまったキャラバンのみんなと、おそらくもう会えないであろうからだ。
Sooner or later, Tatsu was planning to leave the caravan behind. He fantasized about slaying a wicked god, accompanied by sidekicks.
いつかはタツも、キャラバンから旅立ちたいと思っていた。オトモたちを連れて、悪い神様を退治に行くことを夢見ていた。
"But, Tatsu not imagine he leave camp in picnic basket--"
「でも、こんな形で帰れなくなるとは思ってなかったですも──」
Tatsu looked up at the sky from a crack in the basket. Even through his tear-filled eyes, he could make out the blue color of the sky that stretched ooon and ooon. Beyond it lay the vast vacuum of “space,” which was still unknown to the Nopon.
カゴの隙間から、タツは空を見上げた。涙ににじんではいるが、今日も広い広い空は蒼い。その向こうに、宇宙と呼ばれる真空があることを、ノポンはまだ知らない。
A shooting star shot across that blue sky.
その蒼い空を、流れ星が駆けた。
"Please star--hear Tatsu's wish! Let there be pretty girl with these meanies, and let her cook Tatsu gently! Don't let Tatsu's beauty be tainted by gross creatures! Apologize for squirming, absolutely won't wiggle inside tummys! Also wish--"
「お星様──タツの願い事を聞いてくださいですも！ せめてこいつらの仲間にも美少女がいて、タツを美味しく丁寧に調理してほしいですも！ こんな ブサイクで野蛮な連中に丸かじりされるなんて、タツの美意識が許さないですも！ 踊食いなんかゴメンだから、ぜったい踊ってやらないですも！ それから ──」
Tatsu's shooting star kept shooting. It did not vanish in an instant. It was not a tiny meteorite that fizzled out in the atmosphere. It was a large man-made craft, breaking apart as it fell.
タツの願い事は延々と続いた。流れ星が、一瞬で消えたりしなかったからだ。それは大気圏上層部で燃え尽きるような、微細な隕石ではない。半壊しながら落下してくる巨大な人工物だ。
"Wha--"
「うわぁ──」
Tatsu forgot all about his wish, and watched as the object fell beyond the mountains. That disc-shaped object, and the fact that it was the Residential Sector of an interstellar immigration ship, was far beyond the Nopon's comprehension.
タツは願い事を忘れて、山の彼方へ落ちていく巨大な物体を見上げた。円盤状のそれが、
巨大恒星間移民船の居住ブロックであるなどと、ノポン人の理解の範疇を超えている。
This ‘shooting star’ brought visitors along with it, visitors who would come to christen the "huge land that go ooon and ooon" as "Planet Mira." And Tatsu will learn of this visit, in the near future--.
そしてそれが、“広くて広くて嫌になっちゃうほど広い地面”に、“惑星ミラ”という名を与える者たちの来訪であると、タツが知ることになるのは、もう少し未来のことであった──。
It was like a beacon of hope shining in the abyss, or a helpful guidepost suspended in the darkness. Nothing would ever erase the Earth from our thoughts.
深淵に輝く一粒の宝石のように。暗闇に浮かぶ未来への道標のように。それは我々の心をとらえ、強く激しく揺さぶって離さない。

その姿を最後にこの目で見たのは、いつだったか。ＤＭ機関の慣熟試験で、静止軌道に上がった時か。それとも、月面基地の視察に訪れた時か。あるいは──
In any event, I had not seen it when the <Moby Dick> set sail, that much I was certain of. Our gaze was locked ahead of us at that time, towards the great alien armies blocking our path. Towards the unknown abyss glimpsed through their soldiers. That was all we saw as we departed. We had no time to glance back at our beautiful birthplace.
いずれにせよ、＜白鯨＞が抜錨した際のことではない。それだけは、たしかだ。あの時の我々は、ただ前だけを見ていた。行く手を塞ぐ、異星人たちの大兵力。その隙間に垣間見える、未知の深淵。それだけを目指して、旅立ったのだ。背後に浮かんでいる美しい故郷を、振り返る余裕はなかった。
And I will never again see it with my own eyes, because it was annihilated during that battle…
そして、この先ももう我が目で見ることはない。あの戦いで、地球は消滅してしまったのだから──

Nagi Kentarou was dreaming. It was a dream of the home he lost two years prior.
ナギ・ケンタロウは、夢を見ていた。二年前に失った、故郷の夢だ。
In a dream, memories are like writing in the sand. Upon waking, that sand is scattered in the wind, erasing all signs of it.
夢とは、記憶という砂粒で構成される儚い風紋のようなものかもしれない。目覚めという風の前に崩れ去り、形を留めない。
Nagi awoke in darkness, and feeling as though he had just seen the Earth vanish in the wind, shed tears of loss.
暗闇のなかで目を覚ましたナギは、眼前から地球だけが失われたように感じ、喪失感に涙を流した。
(Ah, I...we have lost it. The Earth...)
（ああ、俺は──俺たちは、失ってしまった。地球を──）
And then, he remembered. He was not waking from sleep. He had been knocked out from the impact, and had just regained consciousness.
そして、彼は思い出した。自分はいま睡眠から目覚めたのではない。激しい衝撃による気絶から、意識を取り戻したのだと。

He was Nagi Kentarou. At one time he was a Brigadier General in the Earth United Government Forces. Now he is responsible for captaining the <Moby Dick>, as part of the Earthwide Colonization Project.
彼の名はナギ・ケンタロウ。地球統合政府軍准将にして、地球種汎移民計画の一翼をになう巨大移民船＜白鯨＞の船長である。
The Earthwide Colonization Project...it was a project that aimed to scatter the seeds of life across space so they might flower on other celestial bodies, in preparation for the destruction of their home planet. It was thought up by humans, the dominant force on the Earth, to prevent the complete annihilation of everything that once lived on it.
地球種汎移民計画──それは、母星消滅という事態に備えて、地球に発生した生命種を他天体に移民させようという計画である。生存環境の消失がすべての種の絶滅に直結しないよう、万物の霊長たる人類が企図したものだ。
The United Government had known of the impending destruction for the last 30 years. Or rather, it was formed as a result of that realization.
地球が消滅するという事態そのものは、統合政府にとって三十年以上前から予見されていたことだ。いや、むしろその予見こそが、統合政府の成立を後押ししたといってもよい。
One day, the Earthlings became aware...that we were not alone in space, that countless other races existed in its vast expanses.
かつて、地球人類は知ることになった──我々は宇宙の孤児ではなく、あまねく空間には、無数の隣人種族たちが息づいているのだと。
And at that same time, they became aware of the coming crisis. The multitude of races had divided themselves into two distinct factions based on their physical structures, and were locked in an endless struggle. It was likely that their conflict would spread to the Earth.
それは同時に、種の存亡の危機を知るということでもあった。無数の種族たちは、その身体を構成する物質の特徴から二つの勢力に分かれ、果てなき攻防を続けている。その攻防の焦点が、我々の地球に向けられる可能性が存在したのだ。

Upon learning of this, the Earthlings began amassing the majority of their supplies in preparation, and the Earth United Government was formed. Personnel, wealth, and resources were collected and divided between their plans for defense and survival. Of course, there were many who refused to join under the umbrella of the United Government. But the whole world understood the gravity of the situation, so the few dissatisfied dissenters went ignored by the majority.
地球人類はこの時から、その種としてのリソースの大部分を、来たるべき未来のために集約した。地球統合政府を成立さ せ、人員と冨と資源とを、防衛と生存のための計画に振り分けたのだ。無論、統合政府の主流派となる勢力に、恭順しなかった者も多い。だが、この局面での小競り合いが未来の絶滅につながることを、全世界が理解していた。そのため、少数の不満や不公平の存在に、大多数が目と耳を塞ぐことになった。
Thus the United Government developed parallel programs that would serve as wings to guide them forward. One to repel the alien forces, and one to ensure their escape and survival.
こうして統合政府は、異星人勢力に抵抗する技術と、地球から脱出して生き延びる技術とを、両輪として発達させたのである。

Among these were humanoid mobile weaponry...Dolls, a trump card developed to repel the alien armies, using technology not of the Earth. They had no internal combustion systems of their own, relying instead on power transferred from a main generator. They were an all-purpose weapon miniaturized into a small frame. And in just under ten years, a considerable number were manufactured. The Earth’s defense forces were well prepared.
なかでも人型機動兵器──ドールは、地球外の技術をもとに開発された異星人迎撃のための切り札だ。内燃機関を持たず、母艦からの出力転送で駆動するため、その躯体サイズの小型化に成功した汎用兵器である。そのため、十年足らずの間に相当数が生産され、地球圏防衛の体制が整った。
...Or they should have been.
──はずであった。
(It seem we were...overly optimistic.)
（だが俺たちは──甘かったのかもしれん）
Was Nagi’s frank recollection. Mankind’s fighting strength had made rapid improvements, thanks to the development of the Dolls and the DM engine power source, but there was still nothing they could do.
ナギの正直な述懐である。ドールとその母機となるＤＭ機関の開発によって、人類の戦闘力は飛躍的に増強された。それも数倍から数十倍のスケールで、拡充されたのである。にも関わらず、人類はなにもできなかった。
The two alien forces clashed in the planet’s vicinity, their strength vastly outmatching that of the Earthlings. A single ant could not protect its nest while a dragon and tiger fought overhead. Even if the ant became dozens of times more powerful.
地球近傍で行われた、二つの異星人勢力による激突。巨大な力と力のぶつかりあいの中で、人類の力はあまりにも矮小に過ぎた。龍と虎が相打つ足元で、アリ一匹が自分の巣を守り抜くことなど不可能だ。たとえ、それまでの数十倍の力を手に入れたアリであっても。
All mankind could do was entrust their future to a handful of immigration ships. To escape, to survive, to flourish somewhere.
人類にできることは、数隻の移民船にすべてを託すことだけだった。逃げ延びてくれ、生き延びてくれ、どこかで繁栄してくれ、と。
Nagi and his crew turned their backs on the Earth and escaped, precisely because they carried those hopes. The flash behind them...they turned their eyes from the destruction of their home planet.
その願いを背負っていたからこそ、ナギたち移民船クルーは後ろを振り向かず、地球から脱出したのである。背後で輝く閃光──母なる星が巨大な爆発に呑み込まれていく光景から目を背けて。

And so, the <Moby Dick> began its journey, captained by Nagi. But, at the end of their two year journey, the aliens had finally caught up to them. One of the two factions had pursued them, and attacked them with biological weapons. The bioweapons were fearsome, and the outer shell of the residential area...they phased through the hull, and boarded the ship. Within each of them was an antimatter core, so they could not be disposed of carelessly while they were onboard. Their destruction would pose a great danger to the Moby Dick.
こうして、ナギが船長を勤める移民船＜白鯨＞は旅に出た。だが、二年の航海の末、白鯨はついに追撃を受けることになった。二つの異星人勢力のうちの一方が扱う、生体兵器群に襲撃されたのである。その生体兵器は恐るべきことに、居住区のアウターシェル──その分子間をすり抜けて、船内に侵入してきた。しかも、その一体一体が、中心部に反物質のコアを有している。うかつに撃破することすらできないその生体兵器群に潜入され、白鯨は深刻な危機を迎えた。
A single young man had saved the ship from that predicament. His valiant efforts repelled the bioweapons, but he vanished along with his Doll afterwards.
その事態から移民船を救ったのは、一人の青年だった。彼は勇敢な行動で生体兵器群を船内から排除し、乗機であるドールとともに行方不明になった。
However, that did not mean the Moby Dick was safe. A strange planet had appeared before the ship. One that was not marked on the space chart they had acquired before departing the Earth.
だが、それで白鯨の危機が去ったわけではない。出航前に入手していた航宙図にも載っていない未知の惑星が、白鯨の眼前にあったのだ。
“Why had nobody noticed the planet before then? Was it because we were too busy dealing with the pursuit forces? Or...”
「それまで、なぜ誰も惑星の存在に気づかなかったのだ。奴らの追撃に意識を奪われていたためか？ それとも──」
The Moby Dick’s hull was seriously damaged, and they were unable to escape the planet’s gravitational pull. Nagi, who had been issuing commands from the bridge, knew that an emergency landing was unavoidable, and did his best to minimize the damage to the ship during planetfall.
船体に深刻な損傷を追った白鯨には、その惑星の重力から逃れる術はなかった。ブリッジで指揮をとっていたナギは、不時着は不可避であると知り、あらゆる手段でダメージを最小限に抑えるよう操船した。
Then the crash came, and after that, nothing. He had a dream of his beloved Earth while unconscious...and then, he awoke.
そして訪れた衝撃、そして暗転。気絶している間に、幸福な地球の夢を見て──そして、彼は目覚めたのである。
“W-where...”
「こ、ここは──」
“Yo, Nagi, you’ve come to.”
「おう、気がついたか、ナギ」
Nagi heard a familiar voice respond. It was the Moby Dick’s chief engineer, and his friend of several decades, Commander Van Damme. Although they were no longer the same rank, their friendship had continued unaltered.
ナギにとって、聞き馴染んだ声が応える。白鯨の技師長であり、数十年来の友人でもあるヴァンダム中佐だ。上官と部下という関係になったものの、ともに階級を意識することのない関係が続いている。
“What’s the situation, Van Damme...?”
「ヴァンダム、状況は──？」
“Not that great...but I guess you could say we lucked out”
「あまり良くないが──それでも幸運だったと言っていいだろうなぁ」
Van Damme briefly explained what had happened. The Moby Dick had fractured in the upper atmosphere, and each piece of the ship crashed separately. Only the bridge and a few surrounding sections had crashed in their vicinity. None of the other pieces were anywhere in sight.
ヴァンダムは手短に自分たちが置かれた状況を語った。惑星の大気圏上層部で白鯨は四散して、ブロックごとに地表に落ちた。自分たちがいるのは、ブリッジとその周辺のわずかな区画のみ。目視では、周囲に他のブロックは見当たらない。
“And...what of the planet? Is it capable of sustaining life?”
「それで──惑星の環境は？ 生存には適しているのか？」
Van Damme pointed to his right without a word. Nagi turned his head, at a loss for words. An enormous crack ran down the outer wall, through which the night sky could be seen.
ヴァンダムは無言で右手を指さした。そちらを見て、ナギは絶句する。外壁に大きな亀裂が走っており、その隙間から夜空が見えているのだ。
“So...we can breathe the air”
「空気は──呼吸可能なのか」
“That’s not all. The temperature’s around 20C, the gravity is 0.94G, and radiation levels are safe...it’s habitable, without any kind of protection.”
「それだけじゃない。気温も摂氏二十度、重力は0.94Ｇ、放射線レベルも既定値以下──なんの防備もなく、生きていけるようだ」
“How...that we’d end up on an uncharted planet by chance...”
「そんな──未知の惑星でそんな偶然が──」
“If It wasn’t chance, it was someone’s plan...we should make sure to thank them”
「偶然でなきゃ、誰かの意図か──ご親切に感謝しなけりゃならんな」
It was as Van Damme said. Though it was unfortunate that the ship was in pieces, and did not survive the entire journey from Earth. It was nothing short of a miracle that its final stop was a place people could inhabit without the need for terraforming. Nagi thought it must have been the work of a higher power, either god or demon.
ヴァンダムが言うとおりだった。船が四散したのは、痛恨の極みだ。地球種を移民させるための旅が、これ以上続けられないことを意味している。だが、その終着点が環境に手を加えることなく生存可能な惑星だったというのは、奇跡というだけではすまされない。神か悪魔か、何者かの見えざる手が働いているとしか、ナギには思えなかった。
“What about the rest of the bridge crew?”
「他のブリッジクルーは？」
“Everyone’s at work. Scouting the surroundings, recovering the engine, gathering usable materials...stuff like that. There’s a ton of things to do. One’s still snoozing...”
「みんな働いてるよ。周辺の偵察、動力の復帰、使える物資の回収──やるこたぁ、いくらでもあるからな。あと気絶してるのは──」
A young female operator was slumped over her console, nearby where Nagi lay. If he remembered right, she was Second Lieutenant Mei.
ナギからほど近い席で、コンソールにつっぷしている若い女性オペレーターがいる。たしか、メイ少尉とかいう新人だったはずだ。
“I was almost in last place...I’m getting too old for this”
「俺が最後から二番目か──歳はとりたくないものだな」
“You’re still a spring chicken!”
「なに言ってやがる！」
Van Damme gave Nagi a hard slap on the back. It wasn’t surprising for him to praise him. Nagi had remained on the bridge as it shook and entered the atmosphere, guiding the ship until the very end. While the rest of the crew had braced themselves for impact, he was still at the helm. It was no surprise that he would wake up late.
ヴァンダムが、ナギの背を乱暴に叩いた。荒っぽい賞賛も当然である。大気圏突入に揺れるブリッジで、衝撃に耐えながら最後まで操船していたのが、 ナギだったのだ。他のクルーが対衝撃姿勢をとっていたのに、彼にはその余裕すらなかった。その分、覚醒が遅れるのも無理からぬところだ。
Although the chief engineer had not braced himself for impact either, instead managing the auxiliary engine and broken DM engine during the crash, he had still woken up first. But his stubborn body was far from the norm, so it did not come as a surprise to anyone.
もっとも、やはり衝撃に備えることをせずに補機のみとなったＤＭ機関の制御を続けていた技師長は、ブリッジクルーの中で最初に目覚めたらしい。頑強な体は、他の者とは規格が異なるのだろう。

“Mm, mmmh...”
「う、ううん──」
A thin voice informed them that the final crew member had awoken. Mei stood up and surveyed her surroundings. All of the bridge crew seemed to be unharmed.
か細い声が、最後の一人の覚醒を告げた。メイが起き上がって周りを見渡している。どうやら、ブリッジクルーは全員無事だったようだ。
“Captain, Chief Engineer...!”
「船長、技師長──！」
Mei stood at attention hastily, and saluted. Nagi have her a weak smile.
メイがあわてて直立不動になり、敬礼する。ナギは苦笑いした。
“Don’t fuss over formalities during a time like this”
「こんなところで、礼儀だの気にする必要はない」
“Yeah, really. We’re all in this together, like Robinson Crusoe.”
「まったくだぜ。俺たちゃ全員そろって、ロビンソン・クルーソーになっちまったようなもんだからな」
“Y-yes, understood!”
「は、はい、わかりました！」
Mei raised her arm to salute once again, but stopped herself and simply bowed her head. She appeared to be a young, obedient girl. Right before Nagi smiled, he remembered the young man that had vanished into space. The young man who Nagi had watched grow up, who had saved the Moby Dick.
メイはふたたび敬礼しようとして、挙げかけた手を止め、頭を下げた。どうやら素直な性格の若者らしい。ナギは微笑みかけて、宇宙空間に消えていった若者のことを思い出した。幼い頃から知っていた、彼のおかげで白鯨は救われたのだ。
(Well, it might be a bit early...to say we’re saved. We have to fend for ourselves from here on. I’m afraid I’ll have to forget about him for now.)
（いや、救われた──と思うのはまだ早いな。我々はこれから、自らを救っていかねばならないのだ。すまんが、いまはあいつのことは忘れよう──）
Nagi swiftly decided upon matters, and began issuing orders. The crew members who had left to scout returned, one by one, to start carrying them out. They began fending for themselves like that. Though unlike Robinson Crusoe, they did not have a homeland to return to across the sea...
ナギはてきぱきと、思いついた事々についての指示を出し始めた。周辺に散っていたブリッジクルーたちも、次々と集まってきて、ナギの指令を求めはじめる。そう、彼らは自分自身を救っていかなければならないのだ。ロビンソン・クルーソーとは異なり、海の向こうに帰るべき祖国があるわけではないのだから──。

Nearly every section of the immigrant ship hulls had their own artificial gravity generators, thanks to the foresight of the designer.
白鯨という船の設計者に感謝するべきだとしたら、まず船体各所に人工重力発生装置を備えていた先見の明に対してだろう。
They were originally expecting the voyages to last for quite some time, so they took measures to make sure the crew’s bodies did not adapt to a zero gravity environment.
もともと、移民船の旅は長期に渡ることが予期されていた。そのため、クルーが無重力環境に適応してしまうことを回避するための措置だった。
The artificial gravity generators consumed large amounts of energy, so there was fierce opposition against including them. But the ships’ goals were to spread and maintain earthkind, and continuing their lifestyle was important too. So the interiors of the residential sectors were fashioned like cities on Earth, and built so that they could settle upon the surface of a planet.
人工重力発生装置は、多大なエネルギーを消費する。そのため、不要論も根強かったのだが、彼らの移民が地球種の拡散と維持が目的である以上、生活様式を存続させることも重要だったのだ。だからこそ、居住ブロック内部は地球上の都市を再現したものとなっており、いずれは移民先の惑星上に定位させることまで想定した構造となっていた。
Such accommodations were very taxing on the ship’s resources, but with the new DM Engine technology, they were able to manage.
そうした構造は、船のリソースに負担を強いるものではあったが、ＤＭ機関という新技術はそれに耐え抜いた。
But more importantly, the gravity generators had absorbed the impact of the crash. The bridge had its own generator, so they were able to escape any serious damage. Other sections with their own generators had probably survived the crash as well.
ともあれ、その人工重力発生装置が、ほぼ１Ｇの惑星表面への落着の衝撃を吸収した。ブリッジにも独立したその機能があったため、大破をまぬがれたのだ。四散した他のブロックも、無事なものは少なくないはずだ。
“First of all, we must locate the other pieces of the ship. First we’ll locate the residential sector, then the DM engine sector, and third...the Life.”
「我々はまず、他のブロックを見つけなくてはならない。第一に居住ブロック、第二にＤＭ機関部、第三に──ライフだ」
The crew listened with bated breath as Nagi explained the orders to them. The residential sector was necessary for them to live on the planet’s surface. Although the primary engine was seriously damaged, they still had the auxilliary engine. Shelter and energy would be indispensable if they wanted to live on as a civilization. And...
固唾を呑んで指示を待つブリッジクルーたちに、ナギは説明した。居住ブロックは、この惑星上で生きていくための拠点となる。ＤＭ機関部は主機が大破したものの、まだ補機が存在する。文明的な生活を営みたければ、拠点とエネルギーは欠かせない。そして──
“The Life, eh? We need to find those pronto.”
「ライフか、あれの発見は急がねえとな」
Van Damme folded his arms and muttered. The Life were the immigrant ships’ most important cargo. Most of the people who had departed Earth were asleep inside of them.
ヴァンダムが腕組みして深刻そうにつぶやく。ライフとはある意味、移民船の最重要貨物だ。地球から旅立った移民の大部分は、このライフの内部で眠っているのだから。
“I-my brother and parents are still asleep in them. So...”
「私、兄と両親が眠っているんです。だから──」
Mei muttered anxiously. The only people awake aboard the Moby Dick were the crew members, military personnel, and the Life system operators. It wasn’t unusual for family members to be asleep in the Life.
メイが不安そうにつぶやく。白鯨の船内で目覚めていたのは、操船クルーと戦闘要員、それにライフのシステム保守要員だけだ。当然、家族がそこで眠っているケースも珍しくない。
However, assuming they withstood the crash, the systems would shut off if their energy reserves dried up. So they must do everything in their power to rescue the people sleeping in them before that happens. They weren’t in any immediate danger, but they didn’t forever to wait around either.
しかし、落着の衝撃に耐えたとしても、エネルギーが枯渇すれば、システムが停止してしまう。眠っている人々を救うためには、なんとしてもそれまでにライフを発見しなければならない。残された猶予は短くないが、決して長くもないのだ。
“Alright, then we’ll start our search for the rest of the ship. First...”
「よし、それじゃあ他ブロックの捜索を開始する。まず──」
The rest of Nagi’s words caught in his throat.
そう指示を出しかけて、ナギは息を呑んだ。
“Hey, Nagi...”
「おい、ナギ──」
“Yes, I know”
「ああ、わかっている」
Van Damme had sensed it too. Only a small amount of starlight shone on this strange land at night, much like on Earth. Something was panting from darkness. Panting and stomping. If they weren’t trying to hide their presence, they probably weren’t intelligent. Most likely, they were native creatures.
ヴァンダムも周囲の気配に気づいたようだ。地球の夜と同じく、わずかな星明かりにのみ照らされた異郷の夜。そのなかに、何者かが息づいている。荒い息と地面を踏みしめる音。気配を殺している様子はないところからすると、知的生命体ではあるまい。追っ手の異星人ではないとすると、原生生物だろうか。
However, there was no difference between the danger of the aliens that wanted to exterminate the humans, and the prowling native creatures. They would have to protect themselves from this approaching threat and more, on this unknown planet.
だが、地球人を殲滅しようと迫ってくる異星人であろうと、捕食しようと近付いてくる原生生物であろうと、その危険性に違いはない。ここが未知の世界である以上、迫り来る脅威からは自分の力で身を守らねばならないのだ。
“...Everyone, are your sidearms ready?”
「──各自、携行武器は装備してあるな？」
The crew all nodded at Nagi’s words.
ナギの言葉に一同がうなずく。
“Alright, then we’ll take them from here. We’d be at a disadvantage outside of the shelter”
「よし、ではこの場で迎撃する。遮蔽物のない外では、不利だからな」
The approaching creatures were likely nocturnal. The crew would have no chance of surviving if they were disorganized. Nagi spoke in as calm a voice as he could, to prevent them from panicking.
おそらく迫り来る相手は、夜行性の生物だろう。乱戦になったら、勝ち目はない。ナギはパニックが起こらないよう、努めて冷静な声で告げた。
“All hands, form a circle with your backs to the center. Focus your fire on the enemie in front of you, trust your backs and sides to the rest of the circle...here they come!”
「総員、背を向け合って円陣を組むぞ。正面から来るヤツだけを迎撃しろ、横と背中は周りにまかせるんだ──来るぞ！」
Human-sized figures jumped in through the multiple fissures in the bridge’s outer wall. Creatures that would later be called “Silnea.” They’re docile while hanging from trees during the day, but at night they become ferocious. If they had Dolls there would be nothing to fear from the creatures, but the bridge was only equipped with small caliber sidearms, like Battle Assaults and Attack Assaults. It was assumed they would only need weapons to suppress mutinies on a spaceship’s bridge, or fight hand-to-hand, so their lack of equipment was understandable. It would be a serious problem to have high-powered weapons around, as they might compromise the integrity of the hull.
ブリッジ外壁に空いたいくつかの亀裂から、人間に近いサイズの影が飛び込んできた。後に“シルネア”と名付けられる原生生物だ。日中は木にぶら下がるなどして、大人しい生物だが、夜には凶暴になる。機動兵器があれば恐るるに足りない存在だが、ブリッジに備え付けられているのは、バトルアサルトやア タックアサルトといった、小口径の携行火器のみである。宇宙船のブリッジで想定される戦闘など、叛乱鎮圧や白兵戦のみだったのだから、無理もない。大出力の武器を使用して、気密を破ってしまう方が深刻な問題と考えられていたのだ。
But right now they were fighting without any concern over the ship’s integrity. Nevertheless, they put up a brave resistance. Nagi’s directions were precise, and they managed a successful counterattack. The younger crew put their trust in Van Damme, whose imposing figure held a Strike Assault towards the giant crack in the wall. Despite being the chief engineer, he had the dignity of a veteran soldier, and shot down another unknown creature with each pull of his trigger.
だが、気密のことなどまったく考える必要のない状況下での戦闘が勃発した。それでも、ブリッジクルーたちは勇敢に応戦した。ナギの指示が的確で、落ち着いて迎撃できたことが大きかったのだろう。巨大な亀裂の方を向き、強力なストライクアサルトを手に仁王立ちするヴァンダムの姿も、若いクルーたちには頼もしかったに違いない。技師長でありながら、歴戦の兵士としての風格を持つ彼がトリガーを引く度、夜闇のなかで未知の生物が吹き飛ばされていった。
(It seems like, we’ve held out...)

To judge Nagi’s evaluation would be unfair. He was unprepared. There was too much they didn’t know regarding the planet and the creatures that inhabited it.
ナギがそう考えたのを、油断と評するのは酷であっただろう。この未知の惑星に関する知識が、彼らにとってはあまりにも不足しすぎているのだから。
All sorts of genetic abnormalities occur here. There were individual creatures whose strength and intelligence, and at times even body size, transcended that of similar species. At this time, one such transcendental creature(an Overed) appeared directly outside of the bulkheads of the bridge of the Moby Dick.
いかなる遺伝子の悪戯か、この惑星では様々な種族に突然変異が発生する。身体能力や知性、時には体のサイズまでが同種の生物群を超越した個体が棲息しているのだ。この時、白鯨船橋の隔壁のすぐ外に現れたのも、そうした超越者（オーバード）だった。
An enormous...far too enormous native creature. Nagi and the crew did not panic when it appeared through the gap in the wall. It is said that when faced with an incomprehensible sight, the brains of men become unable to process things properly. Everyone watched the gigantic creature in awe, their bodies too shocked to feel fear.
巨大な──あまりにも巨大すぎるその原生生物が、隔壁の亀裂の向こうに現れた時、ナギたちは恐怖を感じなかった。現実感が乏しいと、脳は処理能力が低下するらしい。危険を感じるべき神経が麻痺したのか、一同はその巨大生物に見とれてしまった。
Perhaps it appeared to be a messenger of the gods to them. They did not move at all as the gigantic creature raised what appeared to be its foreleg...and swung downwards.
あるいは、それが神々の眷族に思えていたのかもしれない。巨大生物が、前脚とおぼしき部位を振り上げ──そして振り下ろしてくるまで、ナギたちは一歩も動けずにいた。
The horrible screech of the twisting steel brought Nagi and the crew back to their senses. The Overed was forcing its way in through the enlarged fissure right before their eyes.
複合金属が捻れ、破砕される耳障りな音が、ナギやブリッジクルーたちの意識を現実の地平へと引き戻す。彼らの眼前で、押し広げられた亀裂からオーバードが押し入ってこようとしていた。
“The head, aim for the head! Concentrate fire and take it down!”
「頭だ、頭を狙え！ 一点集中で仕留めるぞ！」
Van Damme roared as he opened fire at the gigantic creature’s cranium with his Strike Assault, his shots marking the target for the rest of the crew. Without stopping to repeat him, Nagi took aim at the same spot and fired as well. Everyone else followed suit.
ヴァンダムが吠えた。同時に、ストライクアサルトを巨大生物の頭部に向けて連射する。その火線が、狙うべき場所の目印となった。ヴァンダムの言葉を口に出して支持するようなことはせず、ナギもまた同じ場所を狙点にさだめて、銃爪を引く。周囲の者たちもそれに続いた。
The Overed appeared to flinch, with ten-odd people focusing their fire on it. But it was only for an instant. The enormous monster shook its head as if annoyed, and forced the rest of its body inside the bridge.
十数人が放つ火線が集中し、オーバードは怯んだように見えた。だが、それも一瞬。煩わしそうに頭を振ると、巨大なモンスターは力尽くで上半身をブリッジ内部にねじ込んできた。
“Evacuate! Abandon the bridge!”
「退避しろ！ ブリッジを放棄する！」
“Damn it, there’s nothing we can do!”
「ちっ、それしかねえか！」
Van Damme agreed with Nagi. With the bridge’s structural integrity compromised by the Overed, it was in danger of collapsing at any moment. However, since it had just forced its way inside, it would be slow to follow them. The bridge crew took off in the opposite direction with Van Damme leading, and Nagi bringing up the rear.
ナギの言葉に、ヴァンダムが同意する。ブリッジはオーバードの蹂躙によって、いまにも崩壊しそうだ。しかし、巨体が亀裂を押し広げている今なら、動きが鈍い。ヴァンダムが先頭、ナギが殿（しんがり）でブリッジクルーたちは逃げ出した。オーバードと反対方向へ。

As he stepped outside, Nagi finally witnessed it for himself… the mysterious land they had reached at the end of their two-year journey.
ブリッジの外に脚を踏み出して、ようやくナギは見た──二年の放浪の果てに、自分たちが到達した未知の大地を。
It would be impossible for their shattered ship to take off ever again. Everyone would have to live on this land now, unless they were somehow able to build another spaceship. But such a task would take an enormous amount of time and effort.
傷つき、四散した白鯨がふたたび離床することは、もはや不可能だ。だとしたら、自分たちはこの大地で生きていかねばならない。もしかしたら、それは新たな宇宙船を建造するまでの間だけかもしれない。それでも、決して短い間になることはないはずだ。
The savage land stretched far into the pitch black of night. Even the soil beneath their feet felt somehow different from the Earth’s. Beyond the overgrowth of unfamiliar plants were cliffs that jutted into the air like the branches of various trees. They seemed to defy the very laws of physics, but perhaps this planet follows its own laws.
暗夜に広がる荒涼とした大地。踏みしめる岩盤のかたさも、どこか地球のそれとは異なるように感じる。記憶にないシルエットの植物が生い茂る彼方には、木々の枝のように空中に突き出した崖がある。およそ物理法則を無視した光景のようにも見えるが、この星にはこの星の法則があるのだろう。
Further above, suspended in the air beyond a thick layer of clouds, was a massive natural satellite. It seemed to be dozens of times larger than the Earth’s moon, based on its apparent diameter.
見上げてみれば、分厚い雲の向こうに巨大な衛星が浮かんでいる。視直径で測れば、地球の月の数十倍はあるように思えた。
(...Well, I should stop comparing everything I see to the Earth, there’s no point in doing that now.)
（──いや、目の前にあるものひとつひとつを、地球のものと比べるのはやめにしよう。そんなことには、なんの意味もない）
Nagi accepted the futility of trying to compare this new world to his old. What was important now was focusing on what lies ahead, ascertaining what would help them survive and what wouldn’t.
かつての物差しで新世界を測ることの無意味さを、ナギは噛みしめた。いま重要なのは、眼前に存在するものが、生存という自分たちの目的に有益か、不利益か、それを見定めることだけだ。
And an obvious threat would be upon them soon.
そして、明らかに不利益な脅威が、すぐ背後に迫っている。
“Bah, none of you are getting enough exercise! If we live through this, you’re all gonna gimme a hundred million push-ups!”
「ええい、お前ら鍛え方が足りん！ この場を生き抜いたら、腕立て一億回だ！」
Van Damme forcefully lifted the crew members that had fallen to their feet. The Overed or push-ups, which did they fear more? They kept moving forward frantically as they were lifted to their feet.
巨大なオーバードから逃げようとして転倒した者たちを、ヴァンダムが強引に立たせている。オーバードと腕立て一億回、どちらにより深刻な恐怖を感じたのか、立ち上がった者たちは必死で前へと進んでいく。
The thunderous sound of the Overed trampling the bridge could be heard behind them. That was their workplace, their home, the place they had spent the last two years after leaving the Earth behind. They couldn’t stand listening to it being destroyed.
背後ではブリッジがオーバードに踏みにじられ、ひしゃげていく轟音が響いている。ナギたちにとって、それは単なる破壊ですまされるものではない。地球を脱出してからの二年間、職場であり、生活の場であった場所が失われていく音だ。
(There was so much data and equipment we could have salvaged in there…)
（持ち出したいデータや機材も山ほどあったというのに──）
Everything they left held such fondness and memories, too. All of it, now being wrecked by the Overed.
そして、持ち出すことのかなわない愛着や思い出も詰まっている。それらのすべてが、一体のオーバードに踏みにじられた。
Nagi ground his teeth in frustration. The lives of each of the crew members here and now were more important than anything they’d left behind. He had to worry about their survival first.
ナギは悔しさのあまり、奥歯をかみしめる。だが、それらのものより大切なのは、クルーひとりひとりの生命だ。いまはまず、自分たちが生き延びることこそを考えなければならない。
“Chief Engineer, I leave everyone in your hands!”
「技師長、みなを頼んだぞ！」
“H-hey, Nagi!”
「お、おい、ナギ！」
Leaving the path ahead to Van Damme, Nagi stopped behind the group. He turned back towards the Overed, and raised his Attack Assault.
前方はヴァンダムにまかせ、最後尾にいたナギは踏みとどまり、オーバードの方を振り向いた。そして、アタックアサルトをかまえる。
“Native! It may be impolite for a newcomer to show up unexpected like this…but we must survive here too! I’ll show you just how determined we are”
「先住者くん！ 新参者がこのような振る舞いに出て、失礼かもしれんが──我らもこの地で生き抜いていかねばならん！ その資格があるかどうか、実力で証明してみせよう」
It did not seem to understand his words. In fact, it did not seem to acknowledge his existence in any way. Nagi was simply prey standing in the Overed’s way. But it did stop moving momentarily, to look down at him.
言葉が通じたとは思えない。事実、オーバードはナギの存在に、なんらかの反応を示したかのようには見えなかった。ただ、行く手にいる獲物として、目を留めただけだ。だが、たしかに脚を止めて、彼の方を見下ろした。
...That alone was enough.
──それだけで充分だった。
Nagi took careful aim as it faced him, and shot at the Overed’s eyes. Although its eyelids closed just before the shot hit, the high-speed armor-piercing bullet penetrated straight through.
慎重に狙点をさだめたナギは、正面に相対したオーバードの目を撃ち抜いた。直撃する寸前に目蓋を閉じたようだが、高速徹甲弾が貫通した。
“...!”
「────！」
The Overed let out a howl the likes of which humans could not comprehend. Maybe it was a scream, or some kind of furious roar. Either way, its attention was now focused solely on Nagi.
人間の文字では再現しがたい咆吼が、オーバードの口蓋から放たれる。それは悲鳴か、あるいは怒りの声か。どちらにしても、彼の敵意はナギのみに向けられた。
“That’s right, focus on me! My life is a small price to pay for the safety of everyone else!”
「そうだ、それでいい。俺だけを狙え！ この命ひとつで若い連中を救えるのなら、安いもんだ！」
Nagi readied his Attack Assault for a shot at its remaining eye, but his plan was overly optimistic. Instead of trying to approach him, the Overed flung a nearby piece of metal in his direction.
ナギは第二射を放とうと、ふたたびアタックアサルトをかまえた。だが、それで残りの目を撃ち抜こうというのは考えが甘すぎたようだ。オーバードはそれ以上、近付こうとはせず、手近な金属片を投げつけてきた。
It may have been tiny compared to the Overed, but it was a sheet of the Moby Dick’s massive bulkheads. The large object struck the ground, sending fragments of rocks flying towards Nagi.
オーバードのサイズと比較したら小さな金属片に見えたが、それは白鯨の隔壁の一枚だった。ナギの身長をはるかに上回る隔壁が大地に突き刺さり、撃ち砕かれた岩の破片が彼の全身を打った。
“Urgh…”
「ぐううう──」
The Overed approached slowly as he gathered himself after the blow. It seemed to be moving cautiously, but the Attack Assault was no longer in Nagi’s hands. The impact of the rocks had snapped the rifle in two. He no longer had any means to fight back.
たまらずに吹っ飛ばされたナギに、オーバードがゆっくりと近付いてくる。警戒しているようだが、すでにナギの手にアタックアサルトはない。岩塊に直撃され、へし折れてしまった。もはや反撃の手段は残されていない。
“Oh well, that should have bought them enough time to escape. The rest is up to you, Chief Engineer…”
「まあいい。思ったよりはずいぶん時間を稼げた。後を頼んだぞ、技師長──」
Though he accepted his defeat, he did not close his eyes. He steeled his will and faced the creature bearing down on him to the very end.
観念しつつも、目を閉じようとはしない。自分にとどめを刺そうと近付いてくるオーバードから、最後の瞬間まで目をそらさぬ決意で対峙する。
Nagi did not consider the Overed to be his enemy. They just happened to meet upon this planet, and their wills to live clashed. He didn’t bear any hatred or ill will towards it, he simply waited for the final moment to come.
ナギにとって、そのオーバードは敵ではない。ただ、未知の大地で巡り会い、互いの生存をかけてぶつかりあっただけだ。憎しみも恨みもなく、訪れる瞬間をただ待った。

However, destinies can change in an instant.
だが、互いの運命は一瞬のうちに変転した。
A barrage of bullets erupted from the Overed’s right arm. Riddled with heavy machinegun fire across half of its body, it collapsed in place. The scent of gunpowder flooded Nagi’s nostrils, along with an unfamiliar stench.
オーバードの右手から、大出力の砲撃が撃ち込まれてきたのだ。重機関砲の掃射を半身に浴びた巨大生物は、その場に倒れ込んだ。硝煙と、記憶にない生々しい匂いとが、ナギの鼻孔を刺激する。
(That must be the smell of the blood of this planet’s creatures...it seems to be composed of something other than hemoglobin)
（これが、この星の生物の血の匂いなのか──ヘモグロビンとは異なるなにかで構成されているようだ）
Wondered Nagi calmly, his life having been in peril until just a moment ago. His thoughts were pulled back into reality by the sound of steel footsteps.
一瞬前まで、生命の危機にさらされていたとは思えないほど、ナギは冷静に考えた。そんな彼の思考を、現実に引き戻したのは鋼鉄の足音だ。
The frames that had saved his life...two Earth-made Dolls, shone vividly in the dark of night. They were both all-purpose crafts called “AD0130 Formula.ST”.
ナギの命を救った機体──地球製のドールが二機、夜闇のなかでもわかるあざやかな姿を現した。どちらも“AD0130 Formula.ST”と呼ばれる汎用機だ。
“Captain! Brigadier General Nagi!”
「船長──ナギ准将ですね！」
The voice of the pilot of the AD0130 in front echoed through its external speaker system. It was a voice Nagi recognized.
手前にいるAD0130の外部出力スピーカーから、パイロットの声が響いてくる。ナギには、その声に覚えがあった。
“Irina...First Lieutenant Irina Akulova!”
「イリーナ──イリーナ・アクロフ中尉か！」
Van Damme and the bridge crew returned afterwards, to confirm Nagi was safe. First Lieutenant Irina and her subordinate, Second Lieutenant Guin, knew all of the members of the crew. They all greeted each other warmly, glad to be reunited.
その後、ナギの無事を知ったヴァンダムとブリッジクルーたちが戻ってきた。ドールから降りてきたイリーナ中尉と、その部下であるグイン少尉はクルー全員にとって、旧知の仲だ。一同は手荒く互いの背中や肩をたたき合い、再会を喜んだ。
“...At any rate, you came just in the nick of time”
「──それにしても、いいところへ来てくれたな」
“My frame’s guncam caught a shot of the bridge crashing. So, we analyzed the image to figure out its trajectory, and came rushing over”
「俺の機体のガンカメラに、ブリッジが落ちていく様子が映ってたんです。画像解析で落着軌道を解析して、急いでやってきました」
Guin responded.
ナギの言葉に、グインが答える。
“Oh sure, it was alllll thanks to you. Except it wasn’t. It was your frame that did all of the work”
「グインにしちゃ、大手柄だよ。あ、偉いのはあんたじゃなくて、機体の方か」
“Whaaaat~, don’t be so mean, First Lieutenant!”
「ええ～～、ひどいっすよ、中尉！」
Irina and Guin were more than just fellow officers, they had known each other since before they even enlisted. Their conversation felt like one between two siblings.
イリーナとグインは上官と部下というだけでなく、入営する以前からの知人同士だったらしい。二人の会話には、仲の良い姉と弟のような空気がにじんでいた。
“So, you guys know what happened to the Residential Sector?”
「それでお前ら、居住区の方はどうなっとるんだ？」
Their faces stiffened at Van Damme’s words. Before the hull of the Moby Dick broke apart, their Doll platoon had been fighting off the bio-weapons that had invaded the area.
ヴァンダムの言葉に、イリーナとグインは表情を引き締めた。白鯨の船体が崩壊する前、二人が所属するドール小隊は、居住区に侵入した異星人の生体兵器群を迎撃していたのだ。
“It’s intact, but…”
「健在です。ですが──」
Irina began explaining. The Residential Sector’s artificial gravity generators allowed it to land on the surface safely, much like the bridge had. Of course, it had been designed to land on the surface of a suitable planet, so it had a high chance of surviving the impact anyway. But there was a major problem. The DM Engine that was supplying energy to the entire Sector was seriously damaged.
イリーナは説明をはじめた。ブリッジ区画と同じく、居住区にも人工重力発生装置があるため、地表への軟着陸は無事成功した。むしろ、移民計画当初から居住可能な惑星に降下させることを想定した仕様になっているため、成功する可能性は高かったのだ。だが、深刻な問題が発生した。居住区全域にエネルギーを供給するＤＭ機関が大破してしまったのである。
“So, what happened to it...?”
「では、市街地はどうなっている──？」
“It’s maintaining essential functions using the reserve power, but it’s unable to deploy the outer shield. We don’t know how long the reserve power will hold for”
「予備動力で、最低限のライフラインは維持しています。ですが、アウターシェルの展開は不可能。予備動力もいつまで保つかわかりません」
“And what’s worse, the native creatures keep attacking! Our Doll squads have their hands full dealing with them!”
「その上、原生生物が次々と襲いかかってきて、ドール隊はその相手で手一杯なんですよ！」
Nagi sank into silence. While the safe landing was good news, the situation was not looking good. Van Damme shouted at them in Nagi’s stead.
ナギは黙り込んだ。居住区が落着に成功したのは朗報だが、状況はとても楽観視できるものではない。代わって、ヴァンダムが怒鳴りつける。
“If things are that bad, whadda you two think you’re doing? Why’d you come save us?!”
「そんな状況で、お前らはなにをやっとるんだ。なんで俺たちの救援なんかに来た！」
“I’m prepared to accept all punishment, Chief Engineer. However, what we need now is a leader, not one or two extra Dolls. We won’t last long without anyone in command.”
「技師長にそうドヤされるのは覚悟の上です。ですが、我々に必要なのは、一機二機のドールよりもまず指導者なんです。誰かが指揮をとってくれなくては、いずれは全滅します」
“That’s why we made our way through the swarm of monsters. If we found the bridge, surely the Captain would...we’d find the Brigadier General and...”
「そう思って俺たち、原生動物の群れのなかを突っ切ってきたんです。ブリッジにたどりつけば、きっと船長が──ナギ准将がいるって──」
Irina and Guin’s eyes were glued to Nagi. The two of them were still so young, yet they’d fought off the aliens two years ago, and survived the assault by the pursuit forces. They were excellent soldiers, but the situation was dire enough that even they were anxious about it.
イリーナやグインが、すがりつくような目をナギに向ける。この二人とて歳は若いが、二年前の異星人との攻防や、その後の追撃戦を生き残ってきた優秀な戦士だ。その彼らをして、不安を隠せなくなるほどの事態なのだ。

（せめて、エルマがいてくれたらな──）
His thoughts drifted to the hero who disappeared after fighting off the bio-weapons, and the subordinate who mobilized with him. Colonel Elma was like Nagi’s right-hand man, and Irina and Guin trusted her immensely. If she were around to guide the Residential Sector, they wouldn’t have had anything to worry about.
生体兵器群を迎撃するなか、白鯨を救うために行方不明になった英雄。彼と行動をともにしていた部下のことを、ナギは思った。大佐の階級を得ているエルマは、ナギの片腕のような存在だ。イリーナやグインからの信頼もあつく、彼女が居住区の方にいてくれれば、どれほど心強かったことか。
But the reality was that she was missing. They had lost a lot of good people in the battle for Earth two years ago and the recent crash landing. Only the people left here now could overcome this struggle.
だが、現実問題、エルマは行方不明だ。二年前の地球における戦闘で、そして今回の落着で、彼らは多くの人材を失った。いまここにいる人間だけで、すべてを乗り切らねばならない。
“Alright, understood. I’ll return to the Residential Sector with the two of you. Chief Engineer, gather up the crew and join us later.”
「よし、わかった。俺は二人と一緒に居住区へ向かう。技師長はクルーをまとめて、後から来てくれ」
“...Got it. We definitely couldn’t carry everyone aboard just two Dolls.”
「──たしかに、全員がドール二機に分乗するわけにはいかねえしなぁ。わかった」
Van Damme nodded in agreement.
ナギの言葉に、ヴァンダムがうなずいた。

...Thus, Nagi set out for the Residential sector with the two pilots. Most Dolls were originally designed as single-seat crafts, and were unable to accommodate more than one person. He couldn’t ride along in the cockpit, so he had to hold on to the shoulder armor of Guin’s AD0130.
──こうして、ナギはグインのAD0130の肩に乗って、イリーナ機とともに居住区を目指した。もともと、ドールのほとんどは単座の機体であり、二人以上の人間を乗せるようにはできていない。コクピットに乗れない以上、肩部装甲にしがみつくしかないのだ。
Irina led the way and kept watch, while Guin followed carefully.
イリーナ機が周辺警戒しながら先導し、グイン機は慎重にそれに続いた。
“It’s alright if you pick up the pace, Second Lieutenant!”
「グイン少尉、もっと速度をあげてもいいんだぞ」
“Eh, but…”
「えっ、でも──」
“Guin! Do as he says, hurry it up!”
「グイン！ 船長がそう言ってるんだ。先を急ぐぞ！」
“A-alright!”
「わ、わかりました！」
They both sped up their advance. If their Dolls were capable of atmospheric flight, they’d be able to travel much more quickly. But they had just been fighting off the bio-weapons, and were only equipped to fight in space. Their only means of transportation here were their two legs. So naturally, a person holding onto the outer frame would feel tremendous vibrations as they moved. Even inexperienced pilots found it difficult to ride in the cockpit for long, despite being equipped with shock absorbers.
イリーナ機とグイン機は、そろってスピードをあげた。大気圏内用の飛行可能なドールがあれば、もっと高速で安定した移動ができただろう。だが、生体兵器群を迎撃した最後の戦いで、彼らのAD0130に施されていたのは宙間戦闘装備だった。大地を行くには、二本の脚で進むしかない。当然、機体にしがみついている者が受ける震動は、すさまじいものとなる。ショックアブソーバーが完備されたコクピットですら、不慣れな新兵だとごく短時間しか耐えられないものなのだ。
However, Nagi withstood the harsh conditions. What kind of crisis was the Residential Sector facing at that very moment? If he had to endure it, he would. Irina understood the urgency of situation, and hurried Guin onwards.
だが、ナギはその過酷な状況に耐えた。こうしているうちにも、居住区はどのような被害を受けていることか。耐えねばならぬ状況であるならば、ただ耐える以外の選択肢は存在しない。それを理解しているからこそ、イリーナも先を急がせたのだ。
Within the intense impacts, Nagi felt a pain in his left shoulder. No, it must have been his imagination. That was an old war wound, it shouldn’t be bothering him again.
激しい震動と衝撃のなか、ナギは左肩に痛みを覚えた。いや、それは錯覚でしかない。たしかにそこには古い戦傷があったのだが、もう痛まないようになっている。

（あいつがいてくれたらな──）
Nagi recalled the face of an old friend, an engineer that had pioneered development for a vital part of the Colonization Project. Without them, the Project would have failed. But they were not aboard any immigrant ship. Their life passed before the project even started, having succumbed to illness.
ナギは旧友の顔を思い出した。移民計画に重要な要素を開発した技術者。彼の存在なくして、計画の実現はなしえなかっただろう。だが、その人物本人は、移民船に乗ることはなかった。病に倒れ、計画発動前に命数を使いはたしたのだ。
(Maybe they were fortunate. They didn’t have to watch as the Earth was annihilated…)
（だが、あいつは幸せだったのかもしれん。地球が消滅するところを見ずにすんだのだから──）
Nagi shook his head at the thought. No, that couldn’t be. They were well aware of the chance the Earth had of surviving. That’s why they kept researching methods to preserve the lifeforms of the planet...placing their last shreds of health at risk.
そう思いかけて、ナギは頭を振った。そんなはずはない。旧友は地球の滅亡を、あり得る可能性として理解していた。その上で、それを乗り越えた先に地球種を存続させる研究を続けたのだ──残り少ない命のすべてを賭けて。
Nagi and everyone else aboard the Moby Dick had a job to do, he couldn’t waste time envying the dead. They had to gather everything that remained, somewhere free of disaster. To carry life, history, culture, and evidence of all of the things that came to be on the planet called Earth, into the future…
ナギたちがなすべきは、災厄を見ずにすんだ者をうらやむことではない。災厄を越えた先に、すべてをつなぐことだ。生命を、歴史を、文化を、地球という惑星に発生した生命種が存在したという証しを、未来へ──。
“I can bear this vibration, if I focus on our mission…”
「その使命の重さを思えば、揺れに耐えることくらい──」
Nagi muttered, then frowned. He had bitten his tongue.
そうつぶやきかけて、ナギは顔をしかめた。舌をかんでしまったのだ。
“Captain Nagi, do you see that ahead of us?”
「ナギ船長、前方、見えますか？」
Nagi looked ahead, following Guin’s voice. It was still dark, so several lights could be seen in the distance. No, those were fires. The Moby Dick’s Residential Sector was ablaze.
グインの声に、ナギは前を見た。まだ夜明け前、闇の中にいくつも灯りがともっている。いや、あれは炎だ。白鯨の居住区が燃えている。
“Is that...a battle?”
「あれは──戦闘か？」
“Yes, the native creatures broke in and started going crazy. I’ll let you down, so I can rejoin the fight!”
「ええ、原生生物が入り込んで、暴れてるんです。船長を降ろして、俺も迎撃に加わります！」
“Don’t be stupid! You’d be losing a soldier. Take me to the armory or Doll hangar, anywhere I can find something to fight with!”
「馬鹿者！ 戦闘要員を無駄にしてどうする。俺を連れて行け、武器庫でもドール格納庫でもかまわん！ 戦う術のあるところへ！」

But Nagi’s desire to fight went unfulfilled. The Residential Sector did have a Doll maintenance area, but all available frames had mobilized. There were only small-caliber firearms remaining.
だが、ナギの決意も虚しかった。居住区にもドールを整備する区画は用意されていたが、機体はすべて出払っていた。残されている武器も小口径の火器ばかりだった。
Nagi accepted that he would be unable to participate, and focused his efforts on commanding the battle.
ナギは自ら戦うことをあきらめ、戦闘の指揮をとることに専念した。
“...There’s no one left behind in the Residential Area! Good, abandon the defenses there! Focus on protecting the Industrial Area’s facilities! I want Lao’s Doll squad over there too!”
「──住宅エリアに取り残された者はいないのだな！ よし、あそこの防衛は放棄してかまわん！ 工業エリアのライフラインを重点的に防衛するんだ！ ラオのドール隊もそっちへまわせ！」
The situation had completely turned around thanks to Nagi’s appearance. There were mainly operators from the Moby Dick there at first, and they were highly trained professionals, so their difficulties weren’t due to any lack of skill. It was the chaos and lack of command that caused them to panic.
ナギが現れたことによる、状況の変化はめざましかった。もともと、ここにいたのは白鯨の操船クルーがその大半である。それぞれに特殊技能を持ち、意識も高い。原生生物の襲撃を受けた当初、彼らを苦しめたのは混乱と、指揮系統の不在であったのだ。
Nagi ordered them to abandon everything in the Residential Sector first. He ordered the civilians to gather in a sturdy building in the Industrial Area, and they fortified their defences around that. They kept the monsters at bay with strategic placement of their limited Doll squads, like those led by Irina, Lao and Doug.
ナギはまず、居住区のすべてを守り切ることをあきらめた。非戦闘員を工業エリアの頑強な建造物のなかに集めて、その周囲に防衛線を構築した。そして、イリーナ隊やラオ隊、ダグ隊といった限られたドール部隊を的確に配置して、守り抜いたのである。
...And finally, dawn broke.
──そして、夜が明けた。

The native creatures were likely nocturnal, and left the city as the morning sun vanquished the horrible night. They might resume their attack when night falls, but they would return to their nests until then. The light of morning was an ally to mankind. In the afternoon they would prepare their defenses and investigate the surrounding areas, so they could mount a more successful defense the following night.
おそらく夜行性であったのだろう原生生物が、恒星の光を浴びて居住区の外へ去って行く。また夜がくれば襲ってくるかもしれないが、それまではねぐらに引っ込んでいるだろう。朝の光は、人類の味方だ。昼のうちに防備を整え、状況を調査し、次の夜にはもっと効率的な防衛ができるようになるだろう。
Nagi gave his orders to the nearby secretaries, starting with the creation of a name registry. He would have to confirm how many survivors had gathered here, first. Then he would designate roles for everyone, establish an organization, and then…
ナギは近くにいた事務官たちに指令して、まず名簿を作らせた。白鯨のクルーのうち、どれだけが生きて、ここに集まったのか、まず確認しなければならない。そして、彼らに役割をふって、組織を整え、そして──
And then, it hit him.
そして、いましなければならないことを思いついた。
“Say, if I remember correctly, this Residential Sector was modeled after some city…”
「なあ、この居住区、たしかモデルがあったはずだな──」
The secretary nodded at Nagi’s words. The Moby Dick’s Residential Sector was built using a certain city as reference. The roadways weren’t particularly similar, but it really did have the memorable landmarks and atmosphere of it.
ナギの言葉に、事務官はうなずいた。白鯨の居住区を建設するにあたっては、ある街を参考としていた。街路の構造が、まったくそのままというわけではない。だが、印象的なランドマークや、市街の雰囲気といったものは、たしかに受け継がれている。
“Alright, this is no longer a ‘Residential Sector,’ this is our city. And a city must have a name.”
「よし、ここはもう居住区じゃない、俺たちの街だ。そして、街には名前がいる」
The secretary, military personnel, ship crew, all of them watched Nagi intently. Irina and Guin were there too. Nagi turned to them and made his declaration.
事務官や戦闘員たち、操船クルー、そうした人々がナギを見つめていた。イリーナやグインの姿もある。ナギは彼らに向かって、宣言した。
“This is New Los Angeles. From here on, we being the revival of NLA…!”
「ここはニューロサンゼルス。これから、ＮＬＡの復興を開始する──！」
Van Damme and the bridge crew arrived at NLA by foot.
徒歩で移動してきたヴァンダムと、ブリッジクルーたちがＮＬＡに到着した。
“New Los Angeles, huh? Classy name.”
「ほう、ニューロサンゼルスとは気のきいた名前をつけたもんじゃねえか」
“Isn’t it? That aside, your group seems to have grown quite a bit…”
「まあな。それより、だいぶ人数が増えているようだが──」
Nagi looked over the personnel accompanying Van Damme. He was concerned that some of the crew may have been lost along the way, but there seemed to be some unfamiliar faces joining them.
ヴァンダムが連れてきた顔ぶれを、ナギは見渡した。険しい道のりでブリッジクルーの誰かが脱落していないか心配していたのだが、どうやら見慣れない顔が加わっている。
“These guys? We picked them up along the way.”
「こいつらか？ 途中でちまちま拾ってきた」
According to Van Damme, they had come across a large number of escape pods on their way to NLA.
ヴァンダムの説明によれば、ＮＬＡに来る途上、いくつもの脱出ポッドを見つけたのだそうだ。
The Moby Dick was a massive ship, so not all sections of the hull were reinforced equally. Areas like the Residential Sector and the bridge were capable of withstanding planetfall, and managed to land safely thanks to their gravity control units. But there were many sectors that weren’t as resilient. The crew assigned to those sectors were supposed to board individual escape pods to land on the planet. Van Damme had come across some of these pods on his way to NLA, and rescued the crew that were inside.
白鯨は巨大な移民船だ。当然、船体各所には強度の高いブロックもあれば、そうでないブロックもある。居住区やブリッジのような頑強なブロックは、 船体が崩壊したときの衝撃にも耐え、重力制御装置によって軟着陸が可能だった。しかし、それが不可能なブロックも多かった。それらの区画にいたクルーは、 それぞれ脱出ポッドに乗り込んで惑星地表に降下することになったはずだ。ヴァンダムはＮＬＡへの道すがら、そうしたポッドを見つけ、中にいたクルーを救出してきたらしい。
“I’ve been concerned about the pods, too...”
「ポッドのことは俺も気になっていたが──」
“We should form a search party to look for them right away. Most of the pods should be sending out distress signals, but they might not all be functioning properly.”
「捜索する部隊を早めに編成した方がいいな。ほとんどのポッドは救難信号を発信しているはずだが、故障したヤツだってあるだろう」
Nagi nodded at Van Damme’s suggestion. He wanted to prioritize the rescue of the trapped crew members, not only for their own safety, but because they desperately needed any available help. The majority of the people in the Residential Sector when it crashed were non-combatants, so it was especially important to recover the military personnel who had been fighting off the alien forces from the rest of the ship.
ヴァンダムの言葉に、ナギはうなずいた。人命救助という観点だけでなく、貴重な人的資源かわいいを確保するためにも、ポッドで脱出したクルーの捜索は優先したい。落着時の居住区にいたのは非戦闘員が多かったため、白鯨の各所で異星人の追撃部隊を迎撃していた要員の確保は、特に重要だ。
“Understood. We’ll form specialized squads for each of our objectives. The highest priority goes to...recovering the crew and the wreckage, protecting NLA, and scouting the surrounding areas.”
「わかった。目的別に部隊を編成しよう。クルーや白鯨の遺物の回収、ＮＬＡの防衛、ＮＬＡ周辺の調査──このあたりが最優先だな」
Nagi formed a few Doll-centric squads, and assigned them the codenames of Testament, Interceptor and Pathfinder, respectively. These squads would become the foundations for the eight professions later known as Unions.
ドール部隊を中心にして、ナギはいくつかの部隊を編成、それぞれにテスタメント、インターセプター、パスファインダーという部隊コードを割り当てた。これらは後に八つの専門職へと整備されていき、ユニオンと呼称されるようになる。

Nagi led Testament personally, and set out to find the missing crew. Van Damme was left behind in NLA to lead Interceptor. He made sure to voice his dissatisfaction.
ナギは自ら、テスタメント部隊を率いて、クルーの捜索に乗り出すことにした。ＮＬＡに居残り、インターセプター部隊の指揮をとるのはヴァンダムだ。これには大いに不満があるようで、ヴァンダムは食ってかかった。
“Hey, you’re the Captain. Our fearless leader who stays home at HQ. Don’t go stealing the fun from your lovely subordinate.”
「おい、あんたは船長だろう。総指揮官は本部でじっと待ってるもんだ。楽しい冒険を、可愛い部下から奪うもんじゃないぜ」
“I’ll agree that it’s fun, but my subordinate is anything but lovely.”
「楽しいというのは同意するが、可愛いというのには賛成しかねるな」
“Don’t give me that!”
「そういうこと言ってんじゃねえ！」
Van Damme grumbled grumblingly, but he couldn’t go against the chain of command. After all, Nagi was a Brigadier General, and he was only a Lieutenant Colonel.
ヴァンダムはゴネにゴネたが、最後は階級差にものを言わせて黙らせた。なんといってもナギは統合政府軍准将であり、ヴァンダムは中佐なのだ。
“You only ever play the ‘superior officer’ card at times like these…!”
「ええい、こんな時だけ上官風ふかしやがって──！」
“No, I have always acted as your superior. It’s you who hasn’t acted enough like a subordinate.”
「いや、いつも上官面しているつもりなんだが、お前があまりにも部下面してくれないもんだからなぁ」
Nagi thought back to Van Damme, who never held back regardless of who he was speaking to. From here on, NLA would need commanders. The foundation and forefront of both politics and the military...they were too much for Nagi to handle on his own. Those who ranked above field officers would have to fill in for whichever roles required them, and people like Van Damme would need experience commanding HQ.
誰に対しても偉そうなヴァンダムのことはさておき、ナギには考えがあった。この先、ＮＬＡには指揮官が必要になる。政治、軍事、それぞれの中央と前線──とてもナギ一人では担いきれない。佐官以上の人間には、必ずいずれかを受け持ってもらわなくてはならない。ヴァンダムのような人物には、司令部で指揮をとる経験を積んでもらわなくてはならないのだ。

He had thought that countless times since arriving on this planet. He never wondered it aloud, but it was always on his mind.
この星に降り立ってから、何度目になるかわからない言葉。ナギは口には出さないものの、考えずにはいられなかった。

Nagi assigned four of the operational AD0150 Formula.ST Dolls to form Interceptor.
ＮＬＡにあった稼働するドールのうち、AD0150 Formula.STを四機選んで、ナギはインターセプターを編成した。
“The Moby Dick had much more powerful frames onboard. Should we look for the hangar, or develop some new models here…”
「白鯨には、もっと高性能な機体も積んであったんだがな。格納庫ブロックを見つけ出すか、ＮＬＡで独自開発できるようにしたいもんだ──」
“With all due respect, sir, the skill of the pilot is more important than the capabilities of their frame. My men and I can take on anything this planet has to offer.”
「お言葉ですが、重要なのは機体よりも搭乗者の腕。このメンバーなら、どんな過酷な任務だってこなしてみせますよ」
Boasted Second Lieutenant Douglas, puffing out his chest. He was one of the most capable Doll pilots aboard the Moby Dick, and the pilots with him were no slackers either.
そう言って胸を張ったのは、ダグラス少尉だ。白鯨に乗っていたドール乗りのなかでも屈指の腕利きで、ともにいる二人も彼に引けをとらない優秀なパイロットたちだ。
“That’s a bold statement, Second Lieutenant.”
「頼もしい言葉だな、ダグラス」
“If you would, Commander, please call me Doug. We’ll show you that we’re not just talk.”
「よかったらダグと呼んでください、隊長。言葉だけでないことをすぐに証明してみせますよ」
“Oh, is that so?”
「おお、そうか」
Nagi was pleased to be referred to as Commander. From the time he had been made General, he hadn’t had many chances to go out on field missions. Commanding a large ship from the bridge had its perks, but he still yearned to command a small elite force.
隊長と呼ばれて、ナギは気をよくした。将官などというものになって以来、現場に出ることも少なくなっていた。ブリッジで大型船の指揮をとるのもよいが、こうして少人数の精鋭チームを率いるというのも好ましい。
(No, I shouldn’t be thinking like that, given the situation we’re in...)
（いや、好ましいなどと考えるのは不謹慎だな。我々がいま置かれた事態の深刻さを考えればそんなことは言っておれん──）
In spite of himself, Nagi cracked a smile.
そう思いつつも、つい頬が緩んでしまうナギであった。

The primary objective of their military op was to search for the escape pods and the Life. Nagi led the squad in the opposite direction from the bridge’s crash site. Van Damme was rough around the edges, but he was a man who cared about his job on the inside. There probably weren’t any more pods along the path he had taken.
作戦行動の第一目的は、脱出ポッドやライフの捜索だ。ナギは部隊を、ブリッジが落ちた場所と反対方向に向けた。ヴァンダムは粗雑に見えるが、実は細やかな仕事をする男だ。彼が捜索しながらやってきたルートに、生き残りのクルーはもういないだろう──という判断だ。
The four of them continued their search while securing the surroundings. During their recon, Nagi realized just how astounding the environments were. The mountain ranges that seemed to defy gravity were truly a sight to behold, and there was an enormous amount of diversity among the wildlife.
四機のドールは周辺警戒を密にしながら、探索行を続けた。その結果わかったのは、この惑星が驚異的な環境にあるということだ。重力を無視したかのような連峰が並ぶ奇観。多種多様すぎるほど豊かな生物相。
“This is my first experience on a different planet...but its splendor really puts my lack of imagination into perspective.”
「他の惑星に来たのなんて初めてですけどね──自分の想像力がなんて貧しかったんだって、思い知らされてますよ」
“It really does. Check out that dinosaur-looking creature over there.”
「まったくだな。あそこにいる恐竜モドキを見てみろ」
Nagi pointed with his Doll’s right hand, at what could only be described as a dinosaur drinking from the edge of a pond.
ナギのドールが右手で指さしたのは、池の畔で水を飲んでいる恐竜にしか見えない生物だ。
“Yeah, it looks like a Brachiosaurus. If I’m not mistaken, they lived on Earth over a hundred million years ago…”
「ああ、ブラキオサウルスに似てますね。たしか、地球で一億年以上前に生きていた──」
“That’s true, but that wasn’t what I wanted to show you. Just now, I saw a group of lizards that resembled it… The largest among them were only as big as dog.”
「その通りだが、俺が言いたいのはそういうことじゃない。さっき、あいつによく似たトカゲの群れを見たんだ。──子犬ほどの大きさのな」
“! The same species can vary in size by that much?!”
「！ 同じ生物が、そんなにサイズ差があるんですか！？」
“Who knows. That was all I saw, so I’m not sure.”
「さあな、そう見えたというだけのことだから、事実はわからん」
Though he gave that response to the bewildered Doug, he believed it was true. The forces at work on this planet seemed to have quite the penchant for mutating the natives’ genes. He remembered the nocturnal creature that had assaulted the bridge a few days earlier. That too must have been an uncommonly large specimen. Although their strength corresponded to their size, the typical members of the species didn’t seem to vary much in power. Nagi had referred to it as a ‘transcendental being’(Overed) at that time, but he had a hunch that name wasn’t too far from the truth.
驚いているダグにそう応えつつも、ナギは自分が感じたことが真実であると確信していた。どうもこの惑星の環境は、生物の遺伝子に過ぎたイタズラをする癖があるようだ。数日前、白鯨のブリッジを襲ってきた夜行性の生物のことを思い出す。あいつもたしか、大した大きさではない群れのなかに一匹だけ超巨大な個体が混ざっていた。サイズに見合う戦闘力を持っていたものの、それ以外は普通の個体と変わらないように見えた。あの時は、超越者（ルビ・オーバー ド）と呼んでしまったが、あながち的外れではないような気がする。
While lost in thought, he received a report from the Warrant Officer bringing up the rear.
物思いに沈んでいた時、最後尾をまかせていた准尉が報告してきた。
“Commander, we’ve confirmed a heat source around 2, 3 o’clock. It seems to be something burning.”
「隊長、熱源反応を確認しました。三時方向、二〇〇〇。なにかが炎上していると推定されます」
“Probably a forest fire...I don’t think it will pose any threat to NLA at that distance, but let’s head over anyway to make sure.”
「山火事の類か──こんな距離でＮＬＡに危険が及ぶとも思えんが、行って確認してみるか」
Decided Nagi, and he immediately ordered them to head in its direction. It wouldn’t matter if they didn’t find anything; confirming a lack of threat would be sufficient enough.
ナギは即決した。すぐに部隊の進路を右手に向ける。何もなかったらそれでいい、何もないということが確認できるだけで十分なのだから。

Nagi’s judgement turned out to be correct. The source of the heat was a section of the Moby Dick’s wreckage that had caught fire. A gigantic creature...an Overed had crushed it, and it had unfortunately been full of fuel containers. The blaze had engulfed the entirety of the wreckage, and spread to the primitive forest.
結果として、ナギの判断は正しかった。熱源反応を発していたのは、白鯨の遺物が炎上している現場だったのだから。巨大生物──オーバードに踏みつぶされたブロックには、運の悪いことに化学燃料が備蓄されていた。そこから発生した爆炎が白鯨の一部だったブロックを焼き尽くし、原生樹林にまで延焼したのだ。
Among the crew escaping the blaze was a single passenger. He was Maurice Chausson, a politician who was supposed to have boarded the Moby Dick as an aide to the president. However, just before arriving at the spaceport, the alien attacks struck the surface of the planet, and their transport vehicle was caught in the explosion. Maurice found himself aboard the Moby Dick when he regained consciousness, but the president and his fellow politicians were nowhere to be found. He received medical treatment aboard the ship, and remained not as a member of the crew, but as waking passenger.
炎から逃げ惑うクルーとともに、一人の移民がいた。彼の名はモーリス・ショーソン。補佐官として、大統領とともに白鯨に乗り込むはずだった政治家である。だが、埠頭に到着する寸前、異星人の部隊が地上を攻撃。彼らを乗せた車も、爆発に巻きこまれた。その後、意識を取り戻したモーリスは、自分が白鯨に運び込まれていたことを知る。大統領や同志たちの姿は、船内にはなかった。船内で治療が行われたという経緯が、操船クルーでもないのに、目覚めたまま乗客になるという状況を彼に与えることになった。
He was wracked with guilt at first, but his mental state recovered during the two year journey through space.
当初は罪悪感や無力感に苛まれたが、二年の旅は、モーリスに精神的な再構築の時を与えた。たしかに大統領を補佐することはできなくなった。
(I’m no longer able to assist the president. Instead, my role as a survivor...will be to establish their ideals on whatever planet we arrive on.)
（だが、移民船が降り立つ新天地に亡き大統領やあの人の理念を根付かせることができれば──それこそが、生き残った私が果たすべき役割なのではないだろうか──）
Maurice would flit amongst the crew members, preaching his own ideologies. At times he acted as an arbitrator, and resolved their problems. By doing so, he built up political support external to the ship’s chain of command.
モーリスはクルーたちの間を飛び回り、自分の理念を説いた。時には調停役として、トラブルを解決した。そうして、船の指揮系統とは異なる支持者層を築き上げていったのである。

Mira was a Protestant clergywoman, an educator, and a scientist. She was one of the drafters of the plan to emigrate from the Earth, to escape from the approaching alien threat. Well, that wasn’t entirely accurate. Although she was little more than a member of the committee for the Earthwide Colonization Project, she was undoubtedly the emotional backbone of the plan.
その人物はプロテスタントの聖職者であり、教育者であり、科学者だった。異星人による人類存亡の危機が迫るなか、地球種を移民させる計画の立案に尽力した人物の一人である。いや、その表現は正確ではない。立場としては地球種汎移民計画の委員のひとりに過ぎなかったが、彼女は間違いなく計画にとって精神的な支柱そのものだった。
Mira stood out among its various experts, who formed the preparation committee. The majority of them were concerned about incorporating national interests in the plan, while Mira alone focused on a plan free of racial, national or religious motives. She was trying to save everything on Earth, not just mankind.
予備委員会ともいえる有識者会議のメンバーのなかで、ミラはただひとり、異質な存在だった。国益や理念といった、それぞれが背負うものをどれだけ多く計画のなかに盛り込むことができるか──大半のメンバーの活動目的はそこにあった。そんな中で、ミラだけは人種や国歌、宗教といったものを超越した計画立案に尽力したのだ。ある意味で、彼女は人類に対しても、肩入れはしなかった。人類以外のすべての地球種をも存続させることを目標にしていたのだから。
If Mira were not the role model she was, the Colonization Project would not have had nearly as much civilian support. She represented the views of the civilians, while also gaining the support of the military. And when it came time for the Moby Dick to depart, she refused to come aboard. She chose instead to head to the cities destroyed by the alien attacks, vanishing into the flames…
ミラというフラッグシップがいなければ、移民計画にあそこまで多くの支持が集まることはなかったかもしれない。彼女は文民を代表する立場にあり、 軍人の共感を得られる人物でもあった。そして白鯨の出港間近、乗船を辞退すると、異星人に襲撃されている街へ向かい、炎の中で消息を絶ったのである──。
Maurice looked up to her as if she were his mentor, but he couldn’t understand the reasons behind her actions. Someone like her would have been invaluable on their new home. Yet she refused to board the ship.
モーリスはミラという人物に私淑しながらも、理解できずにいた。彼女という求心力は、新天地でも必要だったはずだ。にも関わらず、移民船への乗船を拒否するなどと。

Although he made the decision to carry on her wishes, he would need to survive his current predicament first. He stumbled as he ran from the Overed and the flames. This wasn’t the time to fuss over appearances, he couldn’t carry on anything if he died here.
そう決意してはいたものの、遺志を継ぐためにはまず生き残らなくてはならない。オーバードと炎に追われ、モーリスはよろけつつも逃げ回った。見栄など気にしている場合ではない、死んでしまっては何も残せないのだ。
While heading towards the rocky outcropping that the crew had taken refuge behind, he twisted his ankle, and took a steep fall. He had seriously injured his knee, and was unable to get up. A large shadow fell upon him as he lay there.
他のクルーたちが逃げ込んだ岩山の方へ向かおうとして、モーリスの脚がもつれた。激しく転倒する。膝を強打したのか、ひどく痛んで立ち上がれない。そんなモーリスの上に、影が落ちた。
The enormous Overed stood before his eyes, blocking out the light from the sun.
巨大なオーバードがモーリスの目の前に立ち、恒星からの光を遮ったのである。
“Ah, aahhh…”
「あ、ああああ──」
Maurice let out a groan of horror. He had lived through the attack on Earth, and spent two years building up support aboard the immigrant ship...and just like that, everything he had worked for would be stamped out.
モーリスは恐怖のうめき声をあげた。異星人に襲われた地球で生き残り、二年間、移民船のなかで支持者を増やし──そうして築いてきたものが、こんなところで潰えてしまうのだろうか。
Something made a loud crashing noise just then. Maurice and the Overed both turned to the direction it came from. It sounded like someone was setting off flares.
その時だった、破壊音がしたのは。モーリスが音の方を見ると、オーバードもそちらを振り向いた。音を鳴らしたのは、どうやら何者かが炸裂弾を鳴らしたためらしい。
“Hey, Mister...uhh, Big Monster Guy! Over here!”
「でっかい──えーと、名前知らないからナントカさん！ あなたの相手は私がします！」
Came the voice of a young woman. She appeared to be a girl in her early teens.
それは少女の声だった。いや、声だけではない、見た目も十代前半の女の子だ。
“Is that, Lynlee Ku…?”
「たしか、リンリー・クー──」
Maurice knew of the young genius mechanic. Keeping track of faces and names were both parts of being a politician.
幼くして、メカニックを勤める天才少女のことを、モーリスも知っていた。人の名前と顔を覚えるのは政治家にとって初歩の心得である。
Lyn had various items with her, and was using them to attract the Overed’s attention. Had she dragged all of that out of the blazing wreckage? Only someone with her knowledge would think to use those.
リンは様々な装備を持ち出して、オーバードの注意を引きつけようとしていた。装備の数々は、炎上するブロックから持ち出してきたものだろうか。メカニックとしての豊富な知識があるリンならではだ。
“That’s it, right this way Mr. Monster!”
「さあ、こっちへ来なさい、ナントカさん！」
While it was foolish to judge her capability based on her appearance, Maurice couldn’t let her throw her life away.
外見から年齢や力量を推し量るのは愚かなことだが、それでもモーリスは叫ばずにいられなかった。
“...Get out of here, Lyn! Children shouldn’t sacrifice themselves for adults!”
「──逃げなさい、リンくん！ 子供が大人の身代わりになろうなどと！」
“Age doesn’t matter! Anyone who can make a difference, should!”
「子供とか大人とか関係ありません！ 走れる方が囮になる──これが正解です！」
Lyn shouted back at him. The Overed turned her way, as if responding to her wishes.
立ち上がれずにいるモーリスに向かって、リンが叫んだ。彼女の気持ちが通じたのか、オーバードはそちらに向かっていく。
“W-w-whoa, it’s actually working~~!”
「わわわ、ホントに来た～～！」
Lyn began running from the beast in a zig-zag pattern, to draw its attention from Maurice.
モーリスからオーバードを引き離すように、リンは走り始めた。わざとジグザグに走っているのは敵の気をひきつけるためだろうか。
“At the very least, I can…”
「私だって、せめて──」
Maurice made a desperate crawl for a communication device he had seen on the ground earlier. If he could just reach it, he could request help. If anyone was in range, he needed to call for their assistance. There might not even be anyone around, but he couldn’t just sit there and watch.
モーリスは必死に這った。さっき逃げてくる最中に、誰かが放り出した通信機が落ちているのを見たのだ。あれを手にすれば、救援が求められる。交信可能域に誰かがいるならば、救援を求めなければ。誰もいないかもしれないが、それでもただ寝ているわけにはいかなかった。
He continued to crawl, ruining his expensive business suit. Until finally, he reached the communicator. With shaky fingers, he activated the device.
高価な背広をズタズタにしながら、モーリスは這った。そして、通信機を手にする。震える指で、もどかしくも通信機能を立ち上げる。
“S-somebody, please come help...”
「だ、だれか来てくれ──」
Maurice called out frantically. However, he received an unexpectedly clear response...that is, the response came from a very short distance away.
必死に呼びかけるモーリス。だが、救援の声は意外なほど高出力で──つまり、近距離から帰ってきた。
“This is Team Testament. We read you loud and clear, Mr. Aide.”
「こちらチーム・テスタメント、よく聞こえてますよ、補佐官殿」
A moment after the response, came a thunderous sound and an intense shock. But the sound didn’t come from the communicator. Maurice looked towards the source, and saw the squad of Dolls led by Nagi…
声に少しだけ遅れて、轟音と震動が響いてくる。それは通信機越しにではない。モーリスは音の方を見た。そして、ナギが率いる四機のドール部隊の姿を見た──。

The battle capabilities of the squad of master pilots was truly amazing. They circled the giant beast chasing the girl called Lyn, and executed the creature with a few quick shots to the head.
手練れのパイロットたちが乗ったドール部隊の戦闘力は凄まじかった。リンという少女を追い回していた巨大生物を包囲すると、手早く頭部を撃ち抜き、あっさりと制圧してしまったのである。
Lyn, Maurice and the crew that had fled behind the rocks gathered around the Dolls. Nagi and his squad set them down in standby mode, and disembarked.
救われたリンとモーリス、そして岩山に逃げ込んだクルーたちがドール隊の近くに集まってくる。ナギたちもまた、機体を駐機姿勢にして、地面に降り立った。
“Thank you so much for saving us!”
「おかげさまで助かりましたぁ！」
Lyn shouted exuberantly, and bowed. Without waiting for Nagi to respond, she rushed over to the Dolls.
元気な声とともに、リンが頭を下げる。そして、ナギたちの返事も待たずにドールの方へ向かっていった。
“Ooooh, this is an AD0150 Formula.ST! It looked like an AD0130 at first, but I could tell the difference as soon as I heard its footsteps!”
「おおお、このドール、AD0150 Formula.STですね！ 最初はAD0130かと思ったけど、近づいてくる足音ですぐわかりました！」
She removed some gravel from the servomotor in the right leg of Doug’s frame, as she gushed over the machines.
などと言いながら、ダグ機右脚部の足首サーボモーターに詰まった砂利を取り除いている。
“Seems she’s a mechanic through and through.”
「どうやら根っからのメカニック気性らしいな」
“Yeah, but she’s not like that because it’s her job, she just loves working with those machines. Odd, for a girl her age.”
「ええ、仕事だからいじってるんじゃなくて、触れることそのものが嬉しくて仕方ないってヤツですね。あの歳の女の子で、珍しいもんだ」
Nagi and Doug shared a laugh. Oblivious to their discussion, Lyn ran off to check the next frame.
ナギとダグが笑い合う。そんな様子にも気づかず、リンは次の機体の様子を見に行っていた。
“...You must be Captain Nagi. You have my thanks for rescuing us from this dangerous situation.”
「──君は、ナギ船長だな。危ないところをたすけてもらって感謝する」
Came Maurice, borrowing the shoulder of a young man.
近くにいた青年に肩を貸してもらいつつ、モーリスがやってきた。
“No, I apologize for the delay. It’s good to see you safe.”
「いや、遅くなったことをお詫びします。大統領補佐官がご無事でよかった」
“I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t know what the hell is going on here. Where are we? What in the world happened to the Moby Dick?”
「私は正直言って、状況がよくつかめていないのだ。ここはどこだ？ 白鯨はいったいどうなっている？」
Nagi recalled the previous events as he asked. When the bioweapons attacked, he had closed communications with Maurice due to his constant nagging. He felt just a twinge of regret.
そう問われて、ナギは思い出した。異星人の生体兵器群の襲撃を受けた時、説明を求めるモーリスをうっとうしく感じて、通信を途中で切り上げていたのだった。さすがにちょっと気の毒だったかもしれない。
Nagi explained the situation to him. The repulsion of the bioweapons that had entered the ship, and the damage they had done to the hull. He explained how the ship had been caught in the gravity of an unknown planet, and crashed on it. And that, in the process, it had broken apart into many pieces.
ナギは率直に状況を説明した。白鯨船内に侵入した、生体兵器群は撃退したが、それで船体が損傷したこと。その後、未知の惑星の重力につかまり、地表に落着。その過程で、船体が崩壊、四散したこと。
“We are currently using the Residential Sector as our base, and are searching for the scattered wreckage and crew members. I have been leading the search...”
「現在は、軟着陸に成功した居住ブロックを拠点として、各地に散らばったクルーや白鯨の遺物を捜索しています。私がその指揮をとっているというわけでして──」
“I see. I...would like to head to the Residential Sector as well.”
「そうか、私もそこに──居住区に行ってかまわないかね」
“Of course, we’re gathering all survivors there. Although, it’s not very accommodating at the moment…”
「もちろんです、生存者は全員、あそこに集まってもらっています。ただ、あまり快適とは言えませんがね──」
‘What do you mean?”
「どういうことだ？」
The shortage of energy, and the inability of the city to maintain proper functions. The damage to the outer shield mechanism, and the inability to fend off the angry natives. Nagi explained those problems to him.
現在の居住区はエネルギー不足で、十分な都市機能を維持できていないこと。アウターシェルの展開機能が大破して、外敵を防げないこと。それらの問題点をナギは説明する。
“Nevertheless, it surely beats camping in the wilderness.”
「それでも、荒野でキャンプするよりは、いくぶんかマシですけどな」
“Umm…”
「あの──」
Nagi and Maurice turned their heads toward the timid voice. The tip of her nose was black from fiddling around with the interior of the Dolls’ frames. Lyn continued shyly.
控えめな声の方を、ナギもモーリスも振り返った。ドールの内部フレームをいじった手でこすったのか、鼻の頭が黒くなっている。そんな顔でおずおずと、リンは告げた。
“If you’re low on energy, I might be able to help…”
「エネルギー問題だったら、解決できるかもしれません──」
“What, really?”
「なに、本当か？」
“Yes, I saw it. The Moby Dick’s main engine, the DM Engine...it fell past that mountain to the south...”
「はい、私見たんです。南に見えるあの山の向こうに落ちていったのを──あれは白鯨の主機関、ＤＭ機関です──」
They became new residents of NLA, and the city grew as their home base. A fourth and fifth group were created during this time. Avalanche, a group dedicated to exterminating the incredibly powerful native creatures known as the Overed, and Arms, a group that developed weaponry for both Dolls and infantry. Doug’s numerous encounters with the Overed while working with Nagi had earned him a place in Avalanche.
彼らが新たな住人となり、生活の拠点としてのＮＬＡが整備されていく。そんな中で第四、第五の部隊が編成された。オーバードと呼ばれる強大な原生生物を駆逐するアヴァランチ部隊と、兵器や武装を開発するアームズ部隊だ。ナギとともに活動していたダグは、幾度かのオーバードとの交戦経験を買われて、アヴァランチに転属することになった。
Life was improving for the Earthlings trying to survive on the planet, but there was an ever-growing concern; the energy shortage. As the city’s population grew, so did the strain on their energy reserves. It was becoming increasingly clear that they would not be able to ignore the problem.
こうして、地球人がこの惑星で暮らしていく環境は整えられていったが、さらに深刻化した問題もある。エネルギー供給だ。人口が増え、活動が多様化していくに連れ、それが無視できない問題となっていくのは自明の理だ。

“...It’s only a matter of time. You need to do something, Captain.”
「──そろそろ限界だ。なんとかしてくれ、船長」
“I understand. You don’t have to lecture me about it, Mr. Aide.”
「限界なのは、補佐官に言われなくてもわかっている」
Maurice Chausson and Nagi Kentarou had repeated this same conversation numerous times. A captain without a ship, and an aide without a president...a strange conversation between the two who addressed each other using such titles. However, even deciding on a new public statement was proving troublesome, and they continued conversing in that manner. Maurice and Nagi did not...dislike each other, but they did feel they saw eye-to-eye, so were always stilted. Nevertheless, there were no other individuals available who were suited to leading the government or military. They met often and unwillingly, with no choice but to cooperate.
モーリス・ショーソンとナギ・ケンタロウは、何度目になるのかわからない会話を繰り返した。船がないのに船長、大統領もいないのに大統領補佐官 ──そう呼び合うのも奇妙な話だ。だが、新たな公的立場を決めるのも面倒で、そう呼び合う状態が続いている。モーリスもナギも、互いに相手を嫌い──というほどではないが、波長があわないと感じ、煙たく思い合っていた。それでも、ＮＬＡの民政や軍事を指導できる人材は他になく、嫌々ながらも密に顔をつきあわせて、やっていかねばならない関係だった。

Nagi had intended for Van Damme to replace him as head of the military, but he had instead taken up work with Arms after its establishment. It didn’t come as a huge surprise. Van Damme had been the Chief Engineer aboard the Moby Dick, after all. But Nagi, who had been left to do all of the desk work, was not amused.
自分に代わる軍事的責任者の座を押しつけようと思っていたヴァンダムは、アームズ部隊の創設以来、嬉々としてそちらの活動にとりくんでいる。もともと技師長だったことを思えば無理もないのだが、結果としてデスクワークの多忙を強いられたナギにとっては、面白くない。
This wasn’t the way he would have wanted things, but it was out of his hands. Nagi continued his meeting with Maurice, and they finally confronted the unavoidable matter.
とはいえ好き嫌いを言っていられる状況でもなく、ナギはモーリスと会議を続け、ついに避けられない課題に直面させられた。
“...Give it to me straight, how much time do we have left?”
「──率直に言って、あとどのくらい保つ？」
“About one week. After that, the civilian facilities will shut down.”
「一週間といったところだ。それを超えれば、市民生活が破綻する」
Naturally, they were imposing limitations on energy use to combat the shortage. However, both men wished to avoid that. It had only been two years since they had lost the Earth. The crew of the Moby Dick already had to deal with establishing a base on a strange new planet under such conditions. At the very least, they wanted to provide everyone with the same basic amenities as they had on Earth. Strict living conditions wear morale down very quickly, and that was their greatest fear.
もちろん、エネルギー不足を解決するには、供給を制限するという方策もある。だが、モーリスもナギも、それは避けたいと考えていた。地球を失うという悲劇から、まだたった二年しか経っていないのだ。そんな状況下で。白鯨のクルーは見知らぬ惑星での新天地建設という難事業にとりくんでいる。せめて、 ＮＬＡで暮らす日常生活くらいは、故郷にいた時と同様の快適さを与えたい。耐乏生活というものは急速に人心を荒廃させていく。二人とも、何よりもそれを怖れていたのだ。
“I understand. I will carry out the aforementioned plan in five days.”
「わかった。例の計画を五日で完遂する」
“Yes, that was what I wanted to hear. It’s in your hands, Captain.”
「ああ、その言葉を待っていた。頼んだぞ、船長」

The aforementioned plan...the recovery of the Moby Dick’s engine. They had investigated the report from the girl called Lynlee Ku, and confirmed that the Engine Sector had crashed on the same continent as NLA. Their main engine had been seriously damaged by the alien pursuit forces, but the auxilliary engine would be enough to solve the current crisis in NLA.
例の計画──それは、白鯨のエンジンを回収するというものだった。リンリー・クーという少女が語った目撃情報をもとに調査したところ、ＮＬＡと同じ大陸にエンジンブロックが落着していることが判明したのだ。異星人の追撃部隊によって、白鯨の主機は大破してしまっていたが、補機だけでもＮＬＡのエネルギー事情を支えるには十分だ。
The DM Engine, made up of the auxiliary and main engines… If they could obtain that high-output, high-efficiency power reactor, they would solve all of the energy problems in NLA at once. But their current recovery plan faced two difficulties.
白鯨の主機や補機に使われているＤＭ機関──高効率、高出力を誇るこの動力炉が入手できれば、ＮＬＡのエネルギー問題は一気に解決される。だが、その回収計画が即座に実行されるには、二つの問題があった。
The first was transportation. The DM Engine was incredibly compact and lightweight compared to things like nuclear fusion reactors, but it was still an engine from a massive immigrant ship. They were many logistical issues involved in its recovery and relocation in conditions near 1G gravity.
第一に、輸送問題。ＤＭ機関は、核融合炉などに比べると極めて小型軽量のものだ。それでも巨大な移民船のエンジンであり、１Ｇに近い重力下での回収・運搬には技術的問題が多い。
The second issue was creatures who might get in their way. The auxiliary engine had landed on a coastline. So, despite there being miraculously little damage to it, it was right in the middle of the habitat of sea-dwelling creatures. In order to recover it safely, they would have to eliminate any threats.
第二に、計画を阻むものの存在である。補機は海上の浅瀬地帯に落着した。それ故に、奇跡的といってもよいくらい損傷が少なかったのだが、そこは海棲生物の群生地だったのだ。安全な回収作業を行うためには、これらを排除する必要があった。
For that reason, Nagi formed the Arms group to hasten the maintenance of machinery and Dolls for the recovery operation. Would their preparations finish on schedule, or would they hit the limits of their energy reserves first? It was a race against time.
そのため、ナギはアームズ部隊を編成して、回収作業に投入する機材やドールの整備を急がせたのだ。深刻化するエネルギー問題が限界を迎える瞬間と、どちらが早いか、時間との戦いだった。

Five days after making his decision, Nagi personally led Testament from NLA. His squad was comprised of an elite selection of Doll pilots...Irina, Doug, Lao, and Guin. Of course, Nagi was piloting a Doll as well, the highest performing light frame they had available: the Formula.ZERO. But he still wasn’t satisfied.
こうして決断から五日の後、ナギ自らが率いるテスタメント部隊は、ＮＬＡから進発した。イリーナにダグ、ラオ、グイ ン──戦力の中核となるドール乗りには、精鋭を選んだ。もちろん、ナギ自身もドールに搭乗している。ライトフレームの機体のなかではもっとも性能が高いFormula.ZEROだ。もっとも、ナギはそれでも満足していない。
(In order to survive on this planet...we’ll need a considerable number of more powerful Dolls. If we could just find the R&D Sector, and all of its high-performance prototype frames…)
（これからも、この惑星で生きていくには、もっと高性能なドールが──それも相当数が必要だな。白鯨の研究開発ブロックが見つかれば、試験中だった高性能機が手に入るものを──）
However, they couldn’t delay the operation any longer. They had no choice but to use what they had. Fortunately, the pilots accompanying him were the best of the best.
だが、もはや作戦決行を先延ばしにできない以上、現有戦力でやるしかない。幸い、メンバーについては最精鋭の人選ができた。

“...This is T001, we’ll be arriving arriving at the target zone shortly.”
「──こちらＴ００１、間もなく作戦地域に到着する」
The Dolls had very nearly reached their destination after three days on foot. They stood by on the cliff-like terrain, and launched a Hopper Camera. The video relay displayed inside their cockpits.
ドールの歩行による三日の踏破を経て、部隊は目的地の至近に到達した。崖のような地形で待機して、ホッパーカメラを打ち上げる。転送されてきた映像が、ドールのコクピット内に投映される。
“Good, it’s still intact.”
「よし、まだ健在だな」
As they found from their previous reconnaissance, the Moby Dick’s auxiliary engine had fallen over on the shore below the cliff. From their vantage point, the data readouts on the engine did not indicate any damage, and that it was functioning normally.
事前偵察で確認した通り、崖下の浅瀬には白鯨の補機が横倒しになっていた。遠隔によるステータス確認では、故障箇所もなく正常稼働しているようだ。
“The operation starts in 0300. Synchronize your clocks, we begin at zero.”
「作戦開始まで０３００、各自カウントゼロと同時に作戦を開始せよ」
Nagi issued one last order, and the squad gave a simultaneous ‘roger.’ They weren’t facing any sophisticated alien races, or other humans, so they wouldn’t have to worry about any native creatures intercepting their communications.
ナギが最終確認の通信を送り、部下たちが口々に了解の返信を送ってくる。人類同士や、高度な文明を持つ異星人相手の作戦と違って、原生生物に傍受されることはない。
(It’s less tense when we can communicate freely...)
（通信封鎖しなくてもすむというのは、気が楽になるものだな──）
The other members of the group felt the same. Although there was little time remaining before the operation, they began chatting amongst themselves.
部下たちもそのことは知っている。残りわずかな時間の間にも、軽口が飛び交った。
“If we get this done right, we won’t have to cut back anymore!”
「この作戦が成功すれば、もう節約の必要もなくなるんですね！」
“What do you know about cutting back, Guin? I bet you’re just going to stuff your face everyday.”
「グイン、あんた節約なんかしてたの？ 毎日、好き放題食べまくってると思ってたのに」
“That’s not nice! How would I maintain this slim physique if I ate that much?”
「イリーナ中尉、ひどいっすよ！ そんな不摂生してる男が、こんなスリムなボディ維持できてるわけないでしょう！」
“Slim physique...Guin, you might wanna pack some muscles on. Those stick figure arms aren’t going to help you protect Irina.”
「スリムねぇ──グイン、お前さんはもっと筋肉つけた方がいい。そんな細腕じゃイリーナになにかあっても、護ってやれないぞ」
Guin coughed loudly at Doug’s comment. Lao kept to himself while they conversed.
ダグのツッコミに、グインが咳き込む声が聞こえた。彼らのやりとりに、ラオは加わろうとはしない。
(I get the feeling he was a bit more cheerful, before all this happened…)

Thought Nagi while he stared at his monitor. The counter finally dropped into the single digits, and he shouted as it reached zero.
ナギがそんなことを考えながら、モニターをながめていると、ついにカウンター表示が一桁になった。ゼロになるとともに叫ぶ。
“Everyone, move out!”
「よし、作戦開始だ！」

The five Dolls leapt from the top of the cliff. The native sea-creatures turned towards them all at once upon sensing their presence. It was theorized that these ‘Lumedel’ were swarming around the engine due to the heat it was giving off. If that was the case, they would surely meet with resistance should they try to recover it.
崖の上から、五機のドールが飛び出した。その気配をかぎつけて、補機に群がっていた海棲生物が一斉に振り向く。ルメ デルと名付けたこの生物が補機に群がっているのは、ＤＭ機関からの排熱に惹かれていると推測されていた。だとすると、補機を回収しようとすれば、抵抗されるに違いない。
Within the cockpits of the Dolls was a database called the Collepedia. It contained valuable information on the creatures and resources on the planet, put together from previous investigations. The information on the Lumedel was currently overlayed on their monitors. They would need to take care of these Doll-sized creatures first.
ドールのコクピットには、コレペディアと呼ばれるデータベースが組み込まれている。これまでの調査で判明した、この星の生物や資源に関する貴重な資料だ。そのコレペディアの情報が、ルメデルを捉えたモニター映像にオーバーレイ表示される。まずはドールにも匹敵するサイズのこいつらを排除しなければならない。
Nagi and Irina’s frames spearheaded the assault. They slashed at the Lumedel along their path, one after another. The Lumedel recognized them as enemies, and started swarming around them. That was when Doug and Lao began their long-distance bombardments. The recon teams had a tough time dealing with the creatures, but the four elites would have no problems taking them out.
ナギとイリーナの機体は、先頭に立って突入していった。進路上のルメデルを、斬撃で次々と排除していく。ルメデルの方も二人の機体を敵と認識したようで、次々と群がってきた。そこにダグとラオの機体が、遠距離からの砲撃を加える。調査隊はルメデル相手にずいぶん苦戦させられたようだが、精鋭ドール四機による連係攻撃はこれを易々と駆逐していった。
“...Now’s my chance.”
「──いまのうちにっと」
While the rest of them were distracting the Lumedel, Guin’s Doll had circled beneath the cliff to approach the engine. He was in low-impact movement mode, sneaking as quietly as he could.
味方機がルメデルの群れを引きつけているうちに、グインのドールは崖下に回り込みつつ、補機へ接近していった。静音歩行モードで、可能な限り気配を殺しての別行動だ。
“Pay no mind to Guin…”
「こっちに気づくなよぉ──」
Guin’s frame was not equipped with any weapons; on his back was a gravity control unit. Although they were originally intended to provide artificial gravity aboard the Moby Dick, they would eventually be used as the basis for a Doll flight pack. Guin’s job was to place this device on the auxiliary engine. Doing so would offset its enormous mass, so that even a Doll could transport it. A Doll alone wouldn’t be able to power the device, but all he had to do was connect it directly to the engine, and power wouldn’t be a problem.
グインの機体は、武装を装備していない。背部にマウントしてあるのは、重力制御装置だ。いずれはこれを応用して、ドール用のフライトパックに転用することも想定されているが、もともとは白鯨船内で人工重力を発生させるためのシステムである。グインの役割は、これを補機に設置することだった。それに成功すれば、補機の巨大な質量が相殺され、ドールでも簡単に運搬できるようになるはずだ。ドール用の追加装備とするには、エネルギー供給の問題があるのだが、補機に直接接続するのであれば、その心配はない。
Guin arrived undetected, and began attaching the device.
グインはルメデル群に気づかれることなく補機に到達、接続する作業を開始した。

“Looks like Guin’s got it under control.”
「グインのヤツ、うまくやっているようですね」
Irina informed Nagi, as she cleaved a Lumedel in two. Of course, Nagi had already been keeping tabs on the situation through his submonitor. Even if they succeeded in fending off the creatures, the battle would be meaningless if they didn’t get the engine back safely. However, before Nagi could respond...the Doll’s onboard AI sounded a warning siren.
ルメデルの一体を両断しながら、イリーナがナギに語りかけた。もちろん、ナギもその様子はサブモニターで確認している。たとえ戦闘に勝利したところで、補機の回収と運搬が成功しなければ、意味はないのだから。だが、ナギが安堵の言葉を返そうとした時──ドールの制御ＡＩが警戒警報を音声出力した。
“What’s...an Overed?!”
「これは──オーバードか！」
The AI indicated an enormous creature was emerging from beneath the sea. It seemed the Lumedel were its prey. Several times longer than their Dolls, it grabbed the Lumedel one by one, and swallowed them whole.
警告は、海中からの巨大生物の出現を意味していた。どうやら、ルメデルはこのオーバードの食料だったらしい。全長はドールの数倍はあるだろうか。ルメデルを次々と捕らえては、一口で丸呑みしていく。
“‘Arrogant Riddle‘ huh...quite the appropriate nickname for him!”
「“傲慢なリドル”か──二つ名にふさわしいヤツだな！」
Whenever an Overed was encountered, they were given unique names. That was precisely why the Earthlings were known as a “race with a penchant for naming everything they see.”
各地で確認されたオーバードには、それぞれ固有の名称が設定されていた。地球人が“なんにでも名前をつけるのが好きな種族”と呼ばれることになる所以である。
“I’m almost done, just keep doing your thing…”
「もうちょっと、こっちに気づかないでくれよ──」
The flustered Guin had disembarked his Doll to finish fastening the gravity control unit to the engine. He was almost finished, but the wave caused by Arrogant Riddle had soaked him from head to toe.
機体を降りて、重力制御装置と補機の接続作業を行っていたグインは焦っていた。あと少しで作業は終わるというのに、“傲慢なリドル”がルメデルを捕食するたび、波が発生して頭からずぶ濡れになる。
“Leave the Overed to me!”
「オーバードは俺の専門だぜ！」
Doug’s frame held up a massive rocket launcher, ready to fire. Arms had developed it exclusively for Avalanche’s use. It was difficult to handle, but it was designed specifically to combat the massive beasts. The second Doug tried to pull the trigger to fire after acquiring his target, Arrogant Riddle made an unexpected move. It tossed the Lumedel it had in its mouth directly towards his frame.
ダグの機体が、巨大なロケットランチャーをかまえた。彼らアヴァランチ部隊の専用武器として、アームズが開発したものだ。扱いは難しいが、大型生物への殺傷能力を高めてある。素早く狙点をさだめ、ダグがトリガーを引こうとした瞬間、“傲慢なリドル”は意外な行動に出た。頭から呑み込もうとしていたルメデルを、ダグ機に向かって投げつけたのである。
Arrogant Riddle did not appear to have high intelligence, it had simply done so on a whim...or perhaps by chance. But as a result, the four rockets Doug fired hit the Lumedel’s body, exploding on contact.
“傲慢なリドル”に高度な知性があるとは思えない。それは単なる気まぐれ──もしくは偶然だったのだろう。だが、結果として投げつけられたルメデルの体は、ダグ機の眼前で、発射されたばかりのロケット弾四発の直撃を受けた。そして、爆発四散した。
The point-blank explosions sent Doug and the nearby Lao flying away.
至近距離で発生した爆発が、ダグ機とその隣にいたラオ機を吹き飛ばす。

“Doug! Lao!”
「ダグ！ ラオ！」
Irina shouted with concern.
イリーナが悲痛な声をあげる。
“I-it’s no big deal...”
「あ、ああ、なんとかな──」
“Tch, my knee joint’s busted. I can only provide long-range backup from here…”
「ちっ、膝関節をやられた。ここで砲台になるしかねえ──」
It seemed both of their frames had been damaged. While it was fortunate that neither pilot was injured, their battle efficacy had dropped considerably.
ラオ機もダグ機も、それぞれに損傷を受けたようだ。パイロットの生命に別状がないのは喜ばしいが、戦力は大幅に低下した。
“Guin, we’ll be right there! Just hold out until then!”
「グイン、いま行く！ それまで持ちこたえろ！」
“I-I’ve got this under control, First Lieutenant, don’t worry about me!”
「中尉の援護がなくたって、こ、このくらい楽勝ですよ！」
His words were confident, but his voice wasn’t. It was dripping with fear. Which wasn’t surprising, considering he had to work right next to the massive Overed that was devouring the Lumedel. But Nagi and Irina’s frames were tuned for close-quarters combat. If they didn’t take out the Lumedel blocking their path, they wouldn’t be able to back Guin up.
言葉は余裕をよそおっているが、声音は正直だ。グインの言葉には、恐怖がこめられていた。自分よりはるかに大きなルメデルを捕食する“傲慢なリドル”のすぐ横で作業しなければならないのだから、無理もない。だが、ナギの機体もイリーナの機体も、接近戦主体の仕様でチューンされている。目の前のルメデル群を倒さなければ、グインのところへ駆けつけてやることすらできない。
Countless Lumedel fled towards Nagi’s frame, knocking it down onto the sand. They seemed to be panicking at the presence of Arrogant Riddle.
ナギ機に、無数のルメデルが飛びついてきた。押し倒されるような形で、砂浜に倒される。“傲慢なリドル”の出現で、ルメデルもパニックになっているようだ。
“Bah, if this keeps up…”
「くっ、このままでは──」
He could see Guin frantically working through his submonitor. He couldn’t order him to retreat, no matter how dangerous the situation. The future of NLA depended on him.
サブモニターには、必死に作業を続けるグインの様子が映っている。危険ではあるが、逃げろと命じるわけにもいかない。彼の作業には、ＮＬＡの未来がかかっているのだ。
“Alright, it’s done!”
「よし、これで終わりだ！」
Guin finally finished attaching everything, and activated the gravity control device to make sure it was working properly. To put it simply, it was as if he had attached a giant balloon to the engine to carry it away. They wouldn’t have any problems relocating it now.
そしてついに、グインは作業を終わらせた。補機に接続した重力制御装置を稼働させ、正常に機能していることを確認する。わかりやすく言えば、大荷物に気球をくくりつけて浮かせたような状態だ。これで容易に運搬することができる。
Although his job was complete, he was a bit behind schedule for staying alive. The instant he raised his head, ready to return to his Doll, Arrogant Riddle set its eyes on him. Guin’s instincts told him all he needed to know.
だが、任務は成功させたものの、命を惜しむのなら少しだけ行動が遅れたようだ。ドールの方へ戻ろうと顔をあげた瞬間、“傲慢なリドル”と目があった。グインは理由もなく、動物的直感で悟った。
(T-this thing wants to eat me...!)
（こ、こいつ、俺を食う気だ──！）
He cowered in fear. Arrogant Riddle’s arm extended, and Guin was convinced his life was about to end. But something shattered his immobilizing fear just then. A familiar voice, coming through his headset.
恐怖で身がすくむ。“傲慢なリドル”の腕が伸ばされてきて、グインは数秒後の自分の死を確認した。だが、恐怖による硬直を打ち破るほど、頼もしい声がヘッドセットから響いてくる。
“Guin...get down! I’ll take care of this!”
「グイン──伏せなさい！ あとはまかせて！」
That...was not the voice of anyone from their squad. The transmission came from a sixth Doll, standing atop the cliff.
それは──その場にいないはずの者の声だった。崖の上に現れた、六体目のドールからの通信である。
A deep-crimson frame leapt down from above. Nagi recognized that frame.
深紅の装甲に身を包んだその機体が、崖の上から飛翔する。ナギはその機体の素性に気づいた。
“That’s...a newly finished frame from the R&D Sector! Wels.CAIN!”
「あれは──研究開発ブロックにあった新型機！ Wels.CAIN！」
The others understood what he meant. Irina shouted through teary eyes.
そして、ナギ以外の者たちも、その場にいた全員が声の主を知っていた。イリーナが涙を浮かべながら叫ぶ。
“Colonel Elma...you’re alive!”
「生きていたんですね──エルマ大佐！」

The crimson Wels danced through the air gracefully, unsheathing its shoulder-mounted G-BUSTER.
深紅のWelsはまるで熟練のアスリートのように宙を舞い、ショルダーマウントに装備されたG-BUSTERをかまえた。
“It’s nothing personal...but we have to live on this planet too…!”
「あなたに恨みはないのだけれど──私たちも生きていかなければならないの、この星で──！」
The creature’s skull was pulverized by the point-blank strike from the G-BUSTER.
至近距離からのG-BUSTERの一撃が、“傲慢なリドル”の頭部を粉砕した。

“It’s a good thing you came, Elma.”
「エルマ、よく来てくれた」
“Sorry I’m late. This frame needed a bit of maintenance first…”
「遅くなってしまってごめんなさい。この機体を整備していたものだから──」
Elma squeezed Nagi’s outstretched hand. The other members of the group smiled, and Elma explained the situation while Irina clung to her.
ナギが差し出した右手を、エルマが握り返す。他の者たちにも微笑み返し、抱きついてきたイリーナを受け止めながら、エルマはこれまでの経緯を説明した。
She had repelled the alien bio-weapons together with a young man, before crashing on the planet. The Doll the two of them had been riding had been blown outside of the ship at that time. However, the young man opened the hatch just before, and threw Elma back towards the Moby Dick.
この惑星に落ちる前、エルマはもう一人の青年とともに、異星人の生体兵器群を撃退した。その時の戦いで二人の乗っていたドールは、白鯨の外壁から吹き飛ばされてしまったのだ。だが、その青年が直前にハッチを開き、白鯨の方へエルマの身体をドールの腕で投げつけたのだという。
“If he hadn’t done that, I don’t think I would have been able to return to the ship either.”
「あれがなければ、私も船に戻ってこられなかったと思う」
“So, he…”
「では、あいつは──」
Elma lowered her gaze at Nagi’s words, and shook her head.
ナギの言葉に、エルマは目を伏せて、首を振った。
(I see… But we all owe him our lives. He was a true hero...)
（そうか──。だが、我々全員があいつの行動で救われた。“英雄”だな、あいつは──）
By the time Elma made it back to the Moby Dick, the hull had already begun breaking apart as it entered the atmosphere. She made her way to a nearby sector, and set its gravity control unit to max power to withstand the crash.
エルマが白鯨に帰還した時、すでに船体は崩壊し、大気圏突入するところだった。手近な区画に潜り込んだエルマは、そのブロックの重力制御装置をフル稼働させて、落着に耐えたのだという。
“It was quite difficult after that. The area was teeming with vicious beasts…”
「降りた後は苦労したわ。凶暴な生物がうようよしているところだったから──」
Fortunately for Elma, the sector she had taken refuge in was the sector where they researched and developed prototype Dolls and other weaponry. After repairing one of the Dolls, she set out in it to find the rest of the crew.
エルマにとって幸いだったのは、そこが新型ドールや武器を研究開発する区画だったことだ。損傷したドールを修理して乗り込み、エルマは他のクルーを捜して、旅を続けてきたのだという。
“To think that when I finally found you, you would be in the middle of a heated battle.”
「ようやく見つかったと思ったら、まさか戦闘の真っ最中とはね」
“That shouldn’t come as any surprise, we’re not welcome here. Seems like we’re always having to fight these natives to the death.”
「別に偶然じゃねえよ。俺らは招かれざる客だ。ここの本来の住人とは、いつも殺し合ってるようなもんだからな」
Lao scoffed at their situation. He seemed to have his own thoughts on the way they exterminated the native inhabitants of the planet.
ラオが露悪的な言葉を吐き捨てる。彼は彼なりに、原生生物を駆逐しているいまの任務に思うところがあるのだろう。
“...I see. I hope at some point we won’t have to kill each other anymore, and can coexist peacefully.”
「──そうね。いずれは殺し合うことなく、彼らとも共存していきたいものね」
Everyone nodded at Elma’s words. However, they didn’t have all day to chat. They still had to recover the DM Engine and find the sector Elma had crashed in, along with numerous other tasks…
エルマの言葉に、一同がうなずく。だが、いつまでも談笑しているわけにはいかない。ＤＭ機関の運搬、エルマとともに落下してきた研究開発ブロックの調査、やらなければならないことは、山のようにあるのだから──。

“Dissolve the United Forces?!”
「統合軍を解体する！？」
Maurice was shocked. He didn’t think Nagi’s suggestion sane, and neither did the rest of them sitting there. Elma, Van Damme, Irina, Guin, Lao, Doug...none of them hid their surprise.
モーリスは驚いた。ナギの言葉が、正気の沙汰とは思えなかったからだ。そして、それはその場に同席している者たち全員にとって、同様だった。エルマ、ヴァンダム、イリーナ、グイン、ラオ、ダグ──みな、驚きを隠せずにいる。
A day had passed since they recovered the auxiliary engine and R&D Sector, and successfully returned them to NLA. Nagi’s words were like a splash of cold water now that they had finally gotten things in order.
白鯨の補機や研究開発ブロックの運搬を終え、ＮＬＡに組み込むことが成功した、その翌日のことだ。ようやく都市基盤が整ったところで、ナギが言葉の爆弾を炸裂させた。
“Starting today, I am no longer Brigadier General Nagi. I will be ‘Mister Nagi,’ no higher ranked than any of the rest of you.”
「今日から俺はナギ准将ではない。お前たちと同じ、無位無官のナギおじさんだ」
“Mister…? More like, Sister Nagi...”
「おじさんってお前──そりゃ、ナギおにいさんよりゃマシだが──」
Van Damme was so surprised, he couldn’t come up with a proper comeback.
意表をつかれたためか、ヴァンダムの言葉も微妙にズレている。
“What’s wrong? Are you that surprised?”
「どうした？ そんなに意外か？」
“Surprised is...why are you doing this?”
「意外というか──目的はなに？」
Nagi explained his plan in response to Elma’s question.
エルマの問いに、ナギは前々から考えていた構想を披露した。
“We can no longer return to the Earth, or search for a new home. We have no choice but to live on this planet now. Did Robinson Crusoe have a military rank? Did the pioneers on the new continent have a military force?”
「我々はもはや、地球に帰ることも、ほかの新天地を探すこともできない。この惑星で生きていくしかないのだ。ロビンソン・クルーソーが階級を持っていたか？ 新大陸の開拓者たちが部隊編成していたか？」
Van Damme mumbled distrustfully.
ヴァンダムは不信げな顔でつぶやく。
“Are you trying to run away? You don’t want to be Commander anymore, so you break up the military…”
「お前まさか、逃げるつもりか？ 指揮官やるのが嫌で、軍を解散すると言ってるんじゃ──」
“Rest assured, NLA should still create its own autonomous government, and I will be its Chief of Military. I’m not running away from my duties.”
「安心しろ、このＮＬＡにも自治政府を作るべきだ。俺はそこで軍政長官でもやる。自分の義務からは逃げんよ」
“Autonomous government...yes, perhaps that is necessary. Government officials are elected into office...but who would be willing to do that…”
「自治政府か──たしかに必要だな。政府首班は選挙で選ぶことになるか──」
The rest of them ignored Maurice as he mumbled to himself. There were no political beneficiaries on this new planet. If he wanted to do something boring like lead the government, that was his prerogative.
モーリスのつぶやきを、その場にいた全員があえて無視した。懐に入れられる利権があるでなし、
貧乏くじに近い政府首班など、やりたい人間が勝手にやればいい。
“However, in order to live on this planet, we will need a replacement military. I would like to call it “BLADE.””
「だが、この星で生きていくため、軍に代わる組織は必要だ。俺はそれをＢＬＡＤＥと名付けようと思う」
“BLADE...you mean, that…”
「ブレイド──たしか、それって──」
“Correct, Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipators...BLADE comes from the first letter of each of those words.”
「そうだ、神の言葉を超えた人工的な運命の解放者──その頭の文字をとってブレイド、だ」
Those words were once spoken by someone who had developed a certain technology necessary for the Earth-wide Colonization Project. A friend of Nagi’s, and mutual acquaintance of Van Damme’s.
かつて、その言葉を唱えたのは、地球種汎移民計画に必要なとある技術を開発した者である。彼はナギの友人であり、ヴァンダムの知己でもあった。
“That’s certainly an appropriate name for those of us living on this planet.”
「たしかに、その言葉はこの星で生きていく俺たちにふさわしいな」
“Precisely. And you will be their Commander, Van Damme.”
「ああ、そしてその司令はお前だ、ヴァンダム」
“Me?!”
「俺が司令だと！？」
Nagi smiled smugly at Van Damme’s surprise.
目を丸くするヴァンダムに向かって、ナギはニヤリと笑った。
“What’s wrong? Is the man who just accused me of running away trying to run away himself?”
「どうした──俺に逃げるつもりかと言った男が、ずいぶんと腰が引けているじゃないか」
“N-no, but, Elma’s higher ranked than I am...”
「い、いや、階級からいっても、俺よりエルマの方が──」
“Military ranks...have no meaning anymore.”
「階級──もうそんなものに意味はないわ」
Elma was on her feet, having already cast her military insignia onto the floor.
エルマは立ち上がり、自分の階級章を床に放り捨てた。
“As a human being living on this planet, I will join BLADE…under Commander Van Damme.”
「私はこの星に生きる一人の人間として、ブレイドになる──ヴァンダム司令のもとでね」
“I’ll join too!”
「俺ものった！」
“Me too!”
「私も！」
Everyone agreed with Elma. Doug and Irina, Guin and Lao, each of them cast off their military insignias. They all looked expectantly at Van Damme.
エルマの言葉に、一同が同意する。ダグもイリーナも、グインもラオも、それぞれに階級章を投げ捨てる。そして、熱のこもった目でヴァンダムを見つめる。
“Rrr…”
「ううう──」
“What’s wrong, Van Damme? They’re waiting to hear your decision.”
「どうした、ヴァンダム。そろそろ腹を決めたらどうだ」
“Rrrg...fine, I’ll be your Commander or whatever! But if any of you disobey my orders, it’ll be a hundred million pushups! You’ll push until your biceps explode!!”
「ううう──わかった、司令でもなんでも引き受けてやる！ その代わり、俺の命令に逆らったヤツは腕立て一億回だ！ 上腕二頭筋を破壊してやるッ！！」
Everyone cheered. From within all of the excitement, came Maurice’s timid voice.
一同はわきたった。その熱狂が収まったところで、モーリスがおずおずと口を開いた。
“Captain Nagi...no, Chief of Military. Actually, I have a proposal I’d like to make as well…”
「ナギ船長──いや、軍政長官か。実は、私からも提案したいことがあるのだが──」
“Oh, please tell us.”
「ほう、お聞かせいただきましょう」
The man who always spoke so confidently, proposed the following in an uneasy voice.
常に自信に満ちたような表情で弁の立つ人物が、不安そうにも見える顔で提案する。
“I’ve been thinking...what if we named this planet “Mira”?”
「ずっと考えていたのだが──この惑星の名前、ミラと名付けてはどうだろう？」
“Mira...after Mira Torres?”
「ミラ──ミラ・トーレスからですか」
Maurice nodded. Mira Torres...Nagi remembered that name. She had contributed to the ECP, just like the person who had spoken the words that formed BLADE, yet she did not board the Moby Dick. He, too, held great respect for the woman who had bridged the gap between the military and civilians.
モーリスはうなずいた。ミラ・トーレス──その名は、ナギも知っていた。ブレイドという言葉を唱えた人物同様、地球種汎移民計画に尽力していながら、白鯨に乗り込むことがなかった女性。文民と軍人の間を橋渡しした人物でもあり、ナギも彼女の人柄には好感と敬意を抱いていた。
“That is fine...I want her ideals to take root. Here on Planet Mira…”
「よいですな──あの方の想いを根付かせたいものです。この惑星ミラに──」

That was how the ‘huge land that go ooon and ooon’ came to be known as “Planet Mira.” However, it would be some time before they would share that name with the other inhabitants of the planet.
こうして“広くて広くて嫌になっちゃうほど広い地面だも”は、“惑星ミラ”と名付けられた。だが、名付けた種族以外の知性体たちもその名前を共有していくようになるのは、もう少しだけ未来の事である。

At that moment, in a Vyers settlement far from NLA, came a mutter from some preserved food in a crate.
ちょうどその頃、ＮＬＡから遠く離れたバイアス人の居留地で、保存食が檻のなかでつぶやいていた。
“Rah, Tatsu hope someone come save him soon…”
「ああ、はやく誰か、タツをここから出してほしいですも──」
