BREONNA TAYLOR

UPDATES

(most to least recent)

  • “Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron hasn't addressed the public much since his office took on the case, and the last time he did, he made it clear he would not provide a timeline on when it'd be complete. On Friday, (8/7) he gave an update on Twitter saying his office is currently waiting on additional testing and analysis from federal partners, including a ballistics test from the FBI crime lab.  FBI Louisville conducted a two-day search at Taylor's Louisville apartment on June 19.  An FBI spokesperson said they collected a significant amount of ballistic evidence and completed a shooting reconstruction.  That evidence is now being tested and analyzed at the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia.  On Friday, the FBI said in a news release that, "once the FBI Laboratory has completed its findings, FBI Louisville will promptly share our results with the Attorney General's Office."  It's been nearly two months since that evidence was collected and no timeline was given on when it might be ready.”

Justice for Breonna Taylor

  • There is a bill currently in Congress called the Justice For Breonna Taylor Act that would ban no-knock raids nationwide.  Florida and Oregon are the only two states that ban no-knock warrants statewide, though more are now considering it as the topic has garnered headlines. Several cities have recently banned the practice, including Louisville last week and Houston last year.  It was introduced in the Senate on June 11 as bill number S. 3955, by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).  Read more here: Summary of S. 3955: Justice for Breonna Taylor Act

  • All felony charges against the protestors have been dropped

  • On 7/14 a group of protesters from a group called Until Freedom gathered on the lawn of Daniel Cameron’s new home in Louisville for a sit in.  87 have been arrested on felony charges, but are now being processed out.  This is a coordinated effort by the Grassroots Law Project and Until Freedom.  Read More: 87 people charged with felonies after Breonna Taylor protest at attorney general's house  It looks like all the bails have been taken care of for this round of protests but you can help their future protests by DONATING HERE: Donate

  • A new name has been added to our calls for justice.  Detective Joshua Jaynes sought, wrote and approved the no-knock warrant for Breonna Taylor’s home based on demonstrably false information.  He lied and said the US postmaster told him Breonna Taylor was getting illegal packages in her home.  The postmaster has since gone on record saying he never said that. Without these lies which led to the warrant, Breonna Taylor would be alive today.

  • (this information can also be found at the link in red above)

A NOTE ON WRITING TO THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE APPEAL

When contacting the information of those involved with the appeals, focus on denying Brett Hankison’s appeal rather than the entire list of demands.  Say you are writing/calling because you want to express your opinion that Brett Hankison’s appeal needs to be denied.  Remember to be polite.  These are people doing a job and we really want them to hear us.  I have talked to Ms. Brenda Harral on the phone a few times now and she is extremely helpful and sweet.  THE LOUISVILLE METRO POLICE MERIT BOARD IS LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO HEAR HIS APPEAL.  Do not say they need to not hear the appeal, that is not an option, rather say deny the appeal, or do not let him be reinstated, something along those lines.  When you’re writing letters or emails even a few lines will do if you don’t have time for more, just tell them how you truly feel about Brett Hankison being potentially allowed back out onto the street as a police officer.  I have heard over and over how snail mail is most effective so definitely, if you are able, please write and send a physical letter in your own words about how you feel Brett Hankison’s appeal must be denied.

SCRIPT

“Dear Ms. Harral / Members of the Louisville Metro Police Merit Board,

I hope this finds you and yours well and safe in these uncertain times.  My name is _____ and I am writing to implore you to deny the appeal of Brett Hankison.  Because of his ineptitude as a police officer Breonna Taylor was killed and both her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, and neighbors were exposed to serious danger and now have to live with the trauma of that night.  If he is allowed back on the force he will pose a threat to all he comes into contact with.  I ask that you please uphold Chief Robert Schroeder’s decision to fire Brett Hankison because he is unfit to be a police officer.  Thank you very much for taking the time to read my letter.

Sincerely,

________”

“Dear Chief Schroeder,

I hope this finds you and yours well and safe in these uncertain times.  My name is _____ and I am writing to first thank you for your decision to fire Brett Hankison, and second to call for the firing of Jonathan Mattingly, Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes.  These men did their jobs abysmally and as a result Breonna Taylor, an innocent, is dead.  Her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, and neighbors were exposed to serious danger and now have to live with the trauma of that night.  Jonathan Mattingly, Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes do not deserve to keep their jobs.  Please do the right thing: fire them and make Louisville a safer place.  Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

Sincerely,

I have been putting “a major concern” or “a serious issue” in the subject line rather than anything to do with Breonna Taylor because they are being so sneaky and blocking stuff, but this is just my own thinking so if anyone knows otherwise please let me know.

There was a law passed in Louisville (Breonna’s Law) which bans no-knock raids just in the city of Louisville.  Now we are trying to get them banned throughout Kentucky.  Email the addresses below and ask that they present (to their state government agencies) a state-wide ban on no-knock warrants.
