Reflection Relay Activity
Teacher Notes
- Print at least enough targets to match the number of groups you will have. Number the targets. Attach them to the walls in various places (vary heights and locations) around the room prior to beginning this activity.
- Allow yourself 10 minutes to strategically place targets around room and gather mirrors and laser lights.
- You may wish to have extra targets available for groups that finish early. Groups can try again with another target in a different location.
- Groups of four students is recommended. If you have groups of three students, the first student may hold the laser light and a mirror.
- Decide upon starting positions around the room. You may wish to identify them by marking them prior to beginning this activity. Each group should start in a different position. Location in relationship to their target is not important since student can turn within that starting position, just not leave it. Other students will be able to move about the room.
Materials
Provide the following materials for each pair or small group of students. Four students per group works best for this activity.
- Three small mirrors: Mirrors should be easily hand held (4 x 4 inch works well). Exact size is not very important for this task. Mirrors can be of different sizes.
- Laser light
- Numbered target already placed on wall of classroom: Image of target[1] is included with this activity.
Directions
- Group members must work together to complete this relay.
- One person will remain at the starting position for your group with the laser light aiming it to reflect off the first mirror.
- Other team members will hold the mirrors and move about the room to reflect the laser light beam towards the target. Mirrors may be held or set on a surface.
- The light wave (laser light beam) must reflect off all three mirrors then hit your team’s target across the room.
- Notify teacher when your group is able to hit the target. Demonstrate for your teacher.
Teacher Observations
- Observe and advise groups as needed.
- Once a group has completed their relay, they will call you over to demonstrate. All three mirrors must be used before the light wave hits the target.
