Dear Friend,

There has been a long gap in our correspondence – correspondence which I greatly enjoy; and I admit that the fault lies with me, since I am only now replying to the long and newsy letter you sent at the end of March.

When the spring exhibition closed, my son was delighted to get my portrait [111091] back.^[1] The

The painting, – whose subject – among ourselves – is an elderly fellow of not very appealing appearance – was the focus of much attention, and in fact was the high point of the show. As you can see from the catalogue I sent, there was no other work to rival it, and on several occasions when I visited the exhibition, even when there was no one else there, there was almost always a little gaggle around my portrait – people looking at it and admiring it.

reason for my writing – is that you mention in your letter your happy idea of coming here in the summer. What I would like to know is, what date you propose for this? –

Because my family went down to the country today, and they will stay on the Zemplén estate until the end of June. I will be partly here, partly there, and on my land.

At the beginning of July, I am going to Marienbad; they, it seems

seems, will go to the mountains, where – if I don’t go to the seaside, I will join them in August; because July and August are too hot in Hungary, and during that time I expatriate myself.

What is your dear, respected wife^[2] doing? And how is the latest addition to the family?^[3] I hope they are well; – and that your leg, my friend, is by now completely healed.

Kedves barátom!

Reám nézve igen érdekes levelezésünkban, hosszú hézag mutatkozott; s ennek én vallom magamat okozójának; mert márczius végén vett, szíves, s tartalomdús levelére, csak most válaszolok; midőn a tavaszi kiállítás befejeztetvén, fiam örömére arczképemet, ismét visszakapta.

A kép, – bár – köztünk legyen mondva – a sujet mint vén ember, – nem nagy vonzó erővel bír; itt feltűnést okozott; s a kiállítás „Clou”ja volt. A küldőt catalogusból is láthatta; hogy nem akadt vétel-társa; s én több ízben a kiállítást látogatván; ha másfelé nem, – a kép körül, majdnem mindég találtam – nézőket; s azt dicsérőket; –

indító – oka is, – hogy levelében tesz említést, szép szándékáról; nyári látogatásáról; – Azt óhajtanám tudni, azt – mely időpontra tervezi? –

Mert családom, ma ment falura, s Junius végéig Zempléni birtokon marad; én részint itt, részint ott, s gazdaságomban leszek.
