Exam board information:

Cambridge iGCSE Computer Science (0478)

Course content:

As part of this course students will have the opportunity to learn programming skills (most likely using the Python programming language) and consider how the skills can be applied to a number of different contexts. This might for example include automating tasks within a database by using scripts or designing new applications for mobile phones. It’s important to understand that there is a theory element of this course which concentrates on computer architecture and software development.

Skills that will be developed:

  • Develop their understanding of current and emerging technologies and how they work;
  • Look at the use of algorithms in computer programs;
  • Become independent and discerning users of IT;
  • Acquire and apply creative and technical skills, knowledge and understanding of IT in a range of contexts;
  • Develop computer programs to solve problems;
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of computer programs/ solutions and the impact of computer technology in society.

How the course will be assessed:

Paper 1 - Theory - 1 hour 45 minutes - 60% of final GCSE

This written paper contains short-answer and structured questions.

Paper 2 - Problem-solving and Programming - 1 hour 45 minutes - 40% of final GCSE

This written paper contains short-answer and structured questions. 20 of the marks for this paper are from questions set on the pre-release material.
