MAY update

18 May 2016

Crunch Time

It's early in the season yet but in the next seven days Panthers have three league fixtures which could be very influential in this term's outcomes. First up, tonight's guests are title hopefuls Thurmaston 3 who are four points off the top in the Leicestershire Division 2 but with a match in hand. Tomorrow night sees the Loughborough Panthers host title contenders Mansfield Titchfield Snappers who will not have forgotten their tie-break defeat in last year's Thursday Pétanque Plate final. And next Tuesday the Panthers get a visit of the Fox & Hounds Originals, undisputed challengers in the Rutland Premier Division following their hammering last night of League stalwarts Old Plough Furrows

Tuesday 17 May

Crown Asfordby were the latest team to try their luck at the South Luffenham Stadion. Tim, Tony and Nigel had to dig deep to grind down early resistance for a 13-8 win - but after that Robin's merry men were overrun. Panthers closed out the match 4-0 (52-12) and the League record is on again

Nobbling Norfolk

Panthers formed the backbone of the Leicestershire team on their visit to Norfolk for the annual county match. Mark, John and Daniel, playing at No1, led the way to a 25-15 win with 5/5 (+40) to claim the 'Top Team' award. Ranked 2nd were Helen and Mick with Drew (4/5, +24). Pip on his debut pointed brilliantly and, with Tim and Nigel, took 3 wins (+17) to be ranked 3rd for Leicestershire. Dave also had 3 wins with 'sideways' Simon & Kath, placing them 4th

Covert Operation

In a clandestine exercise reminiscent of the French Resistance, Panthers lured the Old Horse Roadies to the Boot & Shoe hideout to settle a secretly rearranged Leicestershire Preliminary Round Presidents Cup fixture. Hoping to avenge a narrow defeat in the First Round last year, the Roadies came up short, going down 1-4 to an in-form Panthers. Next up is a visit to Blaby Tigers in the First Round proper to avenge a home defeat at the same stage in 2013 [Thu 12 May]

Carry On Crocks

Barely meriting a mention in the Panthers’ pantheon of prize plundering (but we need to put to use a paucity of pics … and a whopping surplus of P’s), he-who-may-not-be-named captured the Coventry Open O60s Doubles Shield at the Burnt Post last week with Brian Stote [Tue 10 May]
