A Moment of BAN

Water is to a flower as Attention is to a Person: both are needed in the right mida - not too little and not too much.

In the Beginning

In 70 AD, Rome destroyed the Temple at Jerusalem. This is an historical fact as recorded by the Flavius historian Josephus, in his book The Jewish Wars. His description includes the account of the triumphal return to Rome of General Titus with the spoils of war:

“The spoils, in general, were borne in promiscuous heaps; but conspicuous above all stood those captured in the Temple at Jerusalem. These consisted of a golden table, many talents in weight, and a Menorah, likewise made Page 5 of gold ... After these, and last of all the spoils, was carried a copy of the Jewish Law. They followed a large party carrying images of victory, all made of ivory and gold. Behind them drove Vespasian [who initially led the Roman forces before he was proclaimed emperor in 69 C.E.], followed by Titus [who finally suppressed the rebellion]; while Domitian [his brother and future emperor] rode beside them, in magnificent apparel and mounted on a steed that was in itself a sight.”

The Weekly Riddle

You are on your way to visit your Grandma, who lives at the end of the valley. It's her birthday, and you want to give her the cakes you've made. Between your house and her house, you have to cross 7 bridges, and as it goes in the land of make believe, there is a troll under every bridge! Each troll, quite rightly, insists that you pay a troll toll. Before you can cross their bridge, you have to give them half of the cakes you are carrying, but as they are kind trolls, they each give you back a single cake. How many cakes do you have to leave home with to make sure that you arrive at Grandma's with exactly 2 cakes?

(Guess before you take a peek. The answer on the back page)

From the Rabbis and Beyond…

Rav Ovadia Yosef z”l

Biblical World - Abu Ben Daniel

1,000 year old manuscripts written by ancient Silk Road family found in Afghanistan

Nearly 100 mysterious manuscripts thought to be 1,000 years old and written by a Jewish family that lived along the ancient Silk Road have been discovered in an Afghan cave.

Scholars and historians are excited about this new cache of documents, which was purchased by Israeli antiquities dealer Lenny Wolfe six months ago.

He came across them as part of an ongoing search for the "Afghan Genizah," a reference to the Cairo Genizah collection of 300,000 Jewish manuscript fragments discovered in a synagogue storeroom in Egypt.

Written in a plethora of languages, including Aramaic, Hebrew, Persian, Judeo-Arabic, and Judeo Persian, these new documents are attributed to an 11th Century family headed by Abu Ben Daniel from the northern Afghan city of Bamyan, according to Haaretz.

They would have been quite familiar with the area’s two biggest attractions back then and up until 15 years ago - giant Buddha statues built in the 6th Century and blown up by the Taliban six months before the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Wolfe first purchased 29 of the documents in 2013, which he returned to Israel where they have been studied in the National Library.

Daf Bite  –

In the past we have referred to two different kinds of animals that cause damage:

a shor mu'ad - an ox that has gored in the past - for which one pays full damages (nezek shalem), and a shor tam - an innocuous ox, with no violent history - for which one pays for only half of the damage (hatzi nezek) that he caused. The Mishna on today's daf (page) asks for definitions for these two types of animals. (The Nimmukei Yosef points out that the Mishna's real question is how to establish that an animal ismu'ad and when will it be removed from that category and returned to its status as atam. Clearly, any ordinary animal with no history of violence will be considered tam.)

Rabbi Yehuda says that a shor becomes mu'ad if it gores three days in a row; it reverts to being a tam if it goes three days without goring. Rabbi Meir teaches that ashor becomes mu'ad after three consecutive acts of goring (according to this opinion, the number of days is not relevant), and it will be considered tam when a child can pet it without it reacting violently.

Rega’ shel Ivrit

How to say “Periphery” in Hebrew? Instead of פֵּרִיפֶרְיָה the Hebrew Achademy suggested “shula - שׁוּלָה” - but it was vetoed down due to the negative association with “shulayim” or margins. Do you have a suggestion instead?

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha: Bəha’alotəkha: Bamidbar (Numbers) 8:1-12:16

Parasha's Historical Context: Creation Time: 2449 (1475 bce) the second year for the departure from Mitsrayim. Bnei Israel 's 40-year journey continues as they leave Sinai Desert, go through Kivrot Hata’ava and Hatserot and then settle in the desert of Paran, on the twentieth of the second month in the second year.

Parashort: Aharon is commanded to raise light in the lamps of the menorah, and the tribe of Levi is initiated into the service in the Sanctuary. A "Second Pesaḥ is instituted in response to the petition "Why should we be deprived?” by a group of Bnei Yisrael who were unable to bring the Pesaḥ offering in its appointed time because they were ritually impure. G-d instructs Moshe on the procedures for Bnei Yisrael's journeys, and encampments in the desert, from Har Sinai, where they had been camped for nearly a year. The people are dissatisfied with their "bread from heaven" (the Mann) and demand that Moshe supply them with meat. Moshe appointed 70 elders, to whom he emanates of his spirit, to assist him in the burden of governing the people. Miriam speaks negatively of Moses and is punished with leprosy; Moshe prays for her healing and the entire community waits seven days for her recovery.(chabad)

Rav Question –

Why do all wars start in the summer?

(Remembering the Lebanon Wars, the fallen, the injured, and the healed.)

A Story – of prayer

It happened sooner than expected.

Kate, an Australian woman, realized that she was about to give birth prematurely.

She was only on the 27th week – which is life threatening for the baby.

Kate and her husband David rushed to the hospital, and within three hours it happened. But not one baby – she gave birth to two!

But instead of joy there was sadness: the two babies were born premature - and one of them, to be called Jamie, was born dead.

The doctors tried to do everything, but to no avail.

They put dead Jamie on his mother Kate, pictured here:

David and his father embraced them both and spoke to his baby:

"Your name is Jamie, You have a sister and two parents who love you.

You have to - you just have to live! "

One of the nurses went to David and, crying, asked him to stop.

"I understand your grief, but there is nothing that we can do anymore," she said.

To their astonishment, they suddenly heard a baby crying.

Jamie the premature baby came to life and began to cry.

And he was not alone.

His parents and the nurse broke into tears, this time tears of excitement and joy…

Mila baParasha - The Meaning of Et

vesheret et echav (Num. 8:26) ('and he will serve et his brothers') It is generally accepted that the word et has two distinct meanings. 1) It indicates that the following noun is the object to which the action of the verb of the sentence applies ('sign of the accusative'); the root is Alef Vav Tav, and in declension it is oti ('me') otecha ('you') oto ('him'). 2) It means 'with' and the root is Alef Tav Tav and in declension it is iti ('with me') itecha ('with you') ito ('with him'). (In dikduk uferush al hatorah of the Gra in the commentary on the words et hashamayim this distinction is discussed at length.). So that we get the right meaning on our verse, both Rashi and Chizekuni write im ('with'). However Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim (Part 2, Ch. 30) casts doubt on the distinction.

(Morsels of Hebrew Grammar by Dr. Meshullam Klarberg)

Haftara: Bəha’alotəkha - Zekharia 2:14-17, 3:1-10, 4:1-7.

Haftit: The Jews is returning from the 70 year Babylonian and Persian exile. They are returning from the land of Persia to see the Temple lays in rubbles and ruins.  The prophet Zekharia is telling Bnei Yisrael to rejoice, that the Holy Temple will be rebuilt and restored to its former glory... Zekharia sees an olive tree draped over a Menorah and begs to learn its interpretation from the angel.  He is answered that only through G-d’s spirit would the people be saved, not through army might.

Connection to the Parsha: The parasha opens with a discussion of the daily Menorah (candelabrum) lighting in the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and Temple. The haftara speaks of the vision of the Menorah and an Angel’s prophetic interpretation of that vision. (Haftorhaman)
