The Digestive System
The digestive system is made up of lots of organs. It is a long process that takes a few days. The digestive system is important because it works together to break down the food. If you did not have a digestive system then you would not be able to digest food and your body would not be able to get all the energy it needs from the food.
The first part of the digestive system is the mouth. The digestive system begins in the mouth where the food is chewed and saliva is added to help break down the food. When the food is all chewed it goes down the oesophagus which is the second part of the digestive system.
The oesophagus is a long tube that goes down into the stomach. The oesophagus has lots of muscles to help push and squish the food down into the stomach.
THE STOMACH AND THE LIVER
The stomach is the third part of the digestive system it is like a big bag that squishes all the food and adds gases and other things into the food. When the food goes into the intestines it is called chyme.
The liver is a large organ that is above and in front of the stomach. The liver is very important to your body because it stores all the fats and sugars and sends them to the parts where they are needed. You need to take care of your liver or then your liver could get sick. If your liver is sick then your eyes and skin turn a yellow colour.
THE SMALL INTESTINES
After the chyme leaves the stomach it enters the small intestine. The small intestine is 7 meters long it is longer than the large intestine it is called the small intestine because it is thinner than the large intestine.
THE LARGE INTESTINE
After the chyme leaves the small intestine it goes into the large intestine. The large intestine is a few meters long it is called the large intestine because it is thicker than the small intestine. After that it goes into the rectum and then the anus which is the last part of the digestive system.
The digestive system is very important to your body, without it your body would not be able to digest food.
