Using the Civil War Map Key as a resource, identify the following items on the Blank Civil War Map:
- Identify the states and territories on the map
- Identify the free states by outlining them in blue
- Identify the slave states by outlining them in red
- Identify the territories by outlining them in green
- Use a yellow highlighter and identify the Confederate and Union boundaries
- Put a black star on FORT SUMTER
- Outline in purple WEST VIRGINIA
- Make sure you have your TODALSS done on your map (Title, Orientation, Date, Author, Legend, Scale, and Source)
After you have completed the map answer the following questions:
- Explain in what year did Virginia split into two states, and evaluate why West Virginia was created (Level 1 and Level 2 questions)?
- Identify which states were slave states that were aligned with the Union (Level 1 question).
- Speculate how the Civil War might have affected the free states of California and Oregon (Level 3 question).
