Key Terms

Adaptive AI

These systems tailor learning content and style to meet individual student needs, creating a more effective and personal learning experience.

Predictive AI

These systems use data such as student attendance, grades, behavior, and online activity to forecast students’ successes and struggles.

Generative AI

These systems generate new text, audio, images, or code based on the content it has been pre-trained on.

Large Language Model

AI model that has been pre-trained on large sets of information, enabling them to predict suitable responses in various situations.

Prompt Writing

Also known as AI Prompt Engineering, involves crafting precise textual instructions (inputs) to guide Generative AI systems in producing desired responses (outputs).
It requires formulating prompts that convey context, tone, and style effectively while considering language nuances.

Algorithm

The set of rules that guide the actions taken by the AI system.

Prompt

Any text, question, information, or code that tells an AI system what task to perform.

Large Language Model (LLM)

The technology behind smart tools like chatbots and writing assistants like ChatGPT and Siri. These models learn by analyzing vast amounts of text and predicting which word is likely to come next. When you ask them a question or request them to write something, they use this knowledge to generate a response by predicting the most probable words to follow.

Machine learning

A form of technology that allows computers to learn from data without being explicitly instructed. It is similar to presenting them with a large puzzle to solve, and they learn the rules and patterns on their own. These computer programs, known as algorithms, improve their decision-making abilities as they gain experience from a growing quantity of data; thus, they require a large amount of data to learn effectively.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

The technology that enables computers to understand human language, allowing them to read, write, and comprehend words, phrases, and paragraphs just as humans do.

Training data

The information that is used to teach an algorithm or a machine learning model. This data is usually obtained from datasets that have been generated by humans. It plays a crucial role in enabling an algorithm to identify patterns. The accuracy of the algorithm’s predictions is significantly influenced by the quality of the training data used to train it.

Tips for Effective Prompt Writing

Review some tips for writing prompts (inputs) effectively.

  1. Be Clear

  1. Clear and simple prompts work best for LLMs.

  2. Avoid ambiguity and give precise instructions on the task requirements.

  3. Clearly outline what the LLM needs to generate, whether it's a story, summary, or answer.

  1. Provide Context

  1. Context is key for LLMs to produce the most accurate responses possible.

  2. Therefore, it is a best practice to include details such as roles and perspectives when developing prompts.

  3. Examples and templates help LLMs understand the desired format of a response.

  1. Be Critical

  1. Evaluate responses for bias and inaccurate information.

  2. Revise prompts based on the LLM's responses and feedback.

  3. Prompt writing is an interactive process, so don't expect LLMs to generate a perfect response on the first attempt with any prompt.

  4. Analyze the outputs, identify patterns or areas for improvement, and adjust future prompts accordingly to optimize performance over time.

Prompt Writing Checklist

You can use this checklist to make sure you are engineering the most effective prompt.

  • The prompt is clear, specific in its instructions or question(s), and provides context for the desired topic or task.

  • The prompt includes all the necessary information for generating a relevant response.

  • The language level and tone are appropriate for the intended audience or purpose.

  • There are not any biases or sensitive topics present in the prompt that could influence the LLM’s response.
