Pleasant Hill R-III BYOD FAQs for Parents

Will my child have access to the same resources that they do with district equipment?

Answer: Students will have access to any of the Internet based software the district currently uses (Google apps, Moodle, Library Media Center databases, etc.) that they have now through a wi-fi network. Software may run differently on different devices for varying reasons.  Products such as Word, PowerPoint, and Photoshop will be available on student devices only if they own the software and have installed it themselves. From their own devices, students will not have access to their folders on the district's server (H: and G: drives) or printers.  Should students need to print, they will need to log into a district desktop computer to access the printers.

As a parent, am I required to add additional software (virus protection, filter, tracking devices, etc.) to my child's device?

Answer: No. Currently we are not requiring any additional software for school use.  Virus protection is always advised, but not required to participate in the wi-fi network.

What technical support will be provided?

Answer: Information will be provided regarding the connection to the district wi-fi network. Beyond that, technical support will not be provided.  It is the student's responsibility to care for his/her own device and keep it in good working order, including charging it outside of school.

Will my child be able to charge their device at school?

Answer: At this time we do not have the resources to provide outlets for students to charge devices during the school day. Power cords stretched out in classrooms is a safety issue for students and the device itself.  Students should bring their device fully charged and learn to use energy conserving settings to help preserve battery life because being able to power them throughout the day is not guaranteed.

Will my child be able to use their device any time they want?

Answer: Each teacher has the discretion to allow and regulate the use of personal devices in the classroom and on specific projects.  Teachers make the final decision for any tools used in the classroom; student owned equipment would be no different.  It will be up to individual teachers to communicate their expectations to students.

If my child's device is stolen or damaged, what recourse can I take?

Answer: The district is not responsible for any damage or theft of student owned equipment.  Installing tracking software like Absolute Software can  help locate the equipment if it is stolen, and keeping track of the device's serial number, model and type will be helpful as well.  Theft or vandalism of any kind should be reported immediately to a building administrator so he/she can take the appropriate steps.
