Joe Dale is an independent languages consultant from the UK who works with a range of organisations such as Network for Languages, ALL, The British Council, the BBC, Skype, Microsoft and The Guardian. He was host of the TES MFL forum for six years, former SSAT Languages Lead Practitioner, a regular conference speaker and recognised expert on technology and language learning. He has spoken at conferences and run training courses in Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, the Far East and Australasia. He was a member of the Ministerial Steering Group on languages for the UK coalition government and advised on the Linguanet Worldwide project for The Language Company. He created ICT activities for the new Institut Français, ALL and Network for Languages Primary French Project Niveau Bleu, Blanc and Rouge courses and was short-listed for a NAACE Impact Award in 2013 too. Joe supported the Erasmus Plus project Conflict to Cooperation with 5 European countries and the Erasmus Plus Project Learning to think and live outside the box. He recently organised and co-hosted a 10 part series of webinars Saturday Tech-Talk in collaboration with the British Council in Indonesia and iTELL and worked on the Nusantara Go project for the British Council in Indonesia and PearTree Languages in 2022. He also worked on the Supporting Schools Reform in Algeria project through the British Council 2019-2020. He was recently described in a Guardian article as an 'MFL guru' and 'the man behind the #mfltwitterati.'. Joe’s new Facebook group ‘Language Teaching with AI already has over 3700 members!

Session 10 - Purely asynchronous remote Teaching ideas

Learning platforms

  • Microsoft Teams - Office 365 account required. Teachers and students can use Meet Now to speak to each other. Using the iOS app users can also record audio in a Team’s channel.

  • Google Classroom - Online portal for sharing and receiving assignments including audio files uploaded to the interface or via the iOS or Android app

  • Seesaw send clips of video or audio to students to provide regular personal contact. The teacher can upload work and students can access it. Students can comment using text or audio but the comment won’t be published until the teacher has approved it.

  • Showbie the teacher sets an assignment and the students can upload their materials. The teacher can scan a document e.g a student's piece of work in Showbie and give audio feedback, highlight, circle items and add text boxes. The teacher can add videos and photos from the camera roll such as screen recordings on iOS (voice and screen)

Practising speaking and listening asynchronously

Session 14: Completing summative assessments while discouraging students to use Google Translate

  • Use Socrative to create teacher-paced quizzes with the text as a screenshot image for each question and giving the students a time limit to answer each question while their webcam is pointed at their hands so the teacher can see they are not using Google Translate on a second device.
  • Students handwrite the exam while their webcam is pointed at their hands so the teacher can see they are not using Google Translate. they then use cross-platform app Office Lens to generate a single PDF of piece of paper or papers and upload it to Google Classroom / Microsoft Teams etc.
  • Use exam.net for uploading PDFs and audio files to a secure environment where students join a session with a code at an allotted time. The software monitors the students’ keyboard and if they are away from the keyboard for a time they can be locked out of the session. They teacher can all end the session at a given time so all student work is automatically handed in.
  • Ask students to use a screen-recording software such as Screencastify, Loom, Zoom or MS Teams to record themselves asynchronously with their webcam pointed at their hands while completing their exam.
  • Use Draftback and DocuViz Chrome extensions which to see how many edits have been made in a Google Doc using its default history function and if large chunks of text have suddenly been pasted into a document it will be immediately apparent.
