What does your eyes help you do? 

  1. The teacher will hold up a Big Book and have the children them preview the photographs.
  2. Have the children make prediction what the book is about.
  3. Read the book aloud.
  4.  Ask: What patterns do you see? What else can you see in the classroom?
  5. The teacher will point out that when they look at patterns, they are using their eyes.
  6. Model “seeing” for children placing my hands around my eyes as imaginary binoculars.
  7. Ask: What do you use your eyes for? What special tool helps you observe? (hand lens)
  8. Have the children use a hand lens to observe a leaf.
  9. Have the children answer the following questions: What color is the leaf? What body part helped you see the color of the leaf? What would happen if you did not have eyes?

What do you think the picture is about? 

  1. mount several full-page color pictures and cover each picture with plain sheet of paper, attached at the top.
  2. Expose part of the picture.
  3. Ask the children: What do you think the picture is about? What sense did you use? 
  4. Discuss how our eyes see part of the picture.
  5. Ask: How did our eyes see only part of the picture? Did it help you identify the picture?
  6. Have a volunteer build a tower blind folded. Then have see what he built.
  7. Have another student build a tower without the blindfold.
  8. How did your eye helped you build the tower? How do our eyes help do? What happens when you are not able to see what you are doing?
