n   pf   0 Batteries

  1. Due to the wiring of the batteries and their placement, does the rig drain one battery at a time? If so, does the voltage indicated by the camera we're using show total battery remaining for both batteries or just what's left prior to a switch over?
  1. The MoVI Pro drains the highest-voltage battery first. After they are equalized, the MoVI Pro drains both batteries at the same time.  The percentage left is viewable on the MoVI Screen and also shows on the batt fuel gauge LED
  2. The camera power supply is regulated, so the voltage display on a camera will show the regulated output voltage, not the voltage of the MoVI Pro batteries.
  1. The only public info for the batteries so far is 1.8Ah. Do they fall within the acceptable Lithium-Ion limits to fly with multiple batteries on a plane? 100Wh is the limit for individual batteries on most airlines, or in the case of some airlines, you are allowed to carry a maximum of two that are above the limit.
  1. Batteries are 1.8*22.2v=40Wh
  2. They charge to full in just under an hour in most cases

FIZ

  1. It is assumed that the FIZ built into the MoViPro is similar in tech to the Freefly Wedge. However, does it have any additional capability to run other types of motors?
  1. FIZ can run popular (non brushless) motors like Heden, Redrock, etc
  1. Can the receiver unit be programmed to communicate with popular hand units already owned by operators? I, for one, own an RT Motion and would love to be able to give the hand unit to an AC without also having to give them a MoVi Controller, particularly if there's already a Remote Operator.
  1. Not at this time
  1. I am successfully using a Chrosziel CDM-100 motor with the Wedge unit. This motor has a build-in cable with a Lemo 7-pin male end. Could I potentially myself replace the Lemo plug with the new Molex Microfit type of connector for the Movi-Pro? Any tips on wiring?

Internal Wiring

  1. -According to the information page, the user can now simply rotate the gimbal at the "roll"    axis to allow for easy inverted operating without having to remount the camera or flip an image in post. Is there only one direction that the roll can occur due to what I assume are internal wires? Do we run the risk of rotating multiple times in a direction and damaging components which we can't see?
  1. Yes, you can only roll one direction, and there are mechanical stops to prevent continuous rotation
  1. -How easy is it to get at internal wiring for maintenance? Or will we always be in a situation of shipping the rig back to Freefly HQ for tune ups?
  1. It depends on what / how something is damaged.  We have tried to make things modular and field replaceable

MIMIC

  1. -What's the new range of the Mimic 2.0?
  1. 600+ feet.  The range stated by the radio module we use is much further, but we feel might be overstating.  We are seeing 600+ feet reliably and consistently.
  1. -Can the Mimic be used as a handheld camera/MoVi control unit if not connected as the primary controller?iu
  1. Yes, there is a multi controller infrastructure that will allow controls to be split up between multipl e input devices.  For instance MoVI Controller runs pan / tilt and mimic runs roll.
  1. -How is the Mimic 2.0 powered?
  1. It has an internal 1.5Ah battery and a USB C charge / power port. A USB A-to-C charge cable is included. Charge time is <1hr from a dedicated USB charger or 2.0A power-enabled USB port. Standalone run time is 4-6hr. Normal operation is available while charging (for using USB power packs or IDX plate USB power to extend run-time, for example).
  1. -Is there room for future camera control updates or software releases to control other cameras? Can they be easily loaded into the MoViPro/Mimic?
  1. Yes, firmware is field updatable and we will be adding new features….we have many more ideas that we did not get to build out.
  1. -Does the Mimic 2.0 have Run/Stop capability?
  1. Yes, the FW we are shooting with right now can control run/stop on RED cameras over RCP

Ring/Stand

  1. -Do the new feet on the stand articulate in some way so that they can be cleared from appearing in frame due to tilting? Could they be removed altogether?
  1. They do not articulate, they can be removed with 3 3mm screws per leg
  1. -Does the new ring play nice with the M15 dock?
  1. Yes, works OK
  1. -Does the articulating monitor mount come with all MoViPros? It isn't listed as a separate accessory on the store page as far as I can tell.
  1. It is included with the ring, and low profile handle

      4.         -When balanced on the ring/stand the movi can tip backwards very easily. Is there some reason the feet only point forward?

a.        Try spinning the Ring 180 degrees horizontally and mounting the feet again. The Ring should have a noticeable lean forward when the ring and feet are in their proper orientation.

Balance

  1. -Does the MoViPro have any additional front to back balancing space compared to the M15?
  1. MoVI Pro has roughly the same amount of room as a fully extended M15
  1. -Does the design of the MoVi Pro (the angled back) mean that there is less space to slide tall cameras farther back as compared to the M15? (C300 etc)
  1. No, there is more room between the pan motor and the camera envelope on MoVI Pro (to accommodate roll flip)
  1. -The M15 weight limit was always a "suggested" 15 lbs, but owner ops routinely tasked the rig with greater payloads with success. How flexible is the MoViPro 6.8kg weight limit?
  1. The limit is the limit….if we say 20 you will put 40lbs ;)
  1. -Has the camera cage changed dimensions at all since the M15?
  1. Not substantially
  1. -Can we still adjust the camera cage/staging area horizontally from the roll motor? This was handy for awkwardly lopsided camera payloads or situations where the camera was barely wide enough to fit in the cage so roll balance adjustments had to happen in other places.
  1. The Roll beam is not adjustable
  1. -Should the gimbal be autotuned between lens swaps due to the new precise calibration and quick autotune time? Or should one autotune per camera build suit most cases unless the type of lenses themselves drastically changes?
  1. It's totally up to you….I tend to autotune with any big differences in inertia or weight.  But if the tuning feels solid and robust (no buzzing, and high enough values, then your footage will look good!)
  1. -Now that we're able to remove batteries from cameras with the new power system, is Freefly considering offering some kind of counter balance kit for operators looking to fly heavier lenses but still needing to achieve front/back balance without a battery on the camera body itself? We've had to develop workarounds in the past, but curious if this is something that more people would be interested in.
  1. We are not looking at this at present….seems like a simple weight plate / weight would suffice….
  1. Does the Pro have an integrated follow focus? It doesn't seem entirely clear from the video or the description in the Freefly shop (the shop uses the word FF "Controller").
  1. MoVI Pro has an integrated Focus / Iris / Zoom driver.  So using the movi controller (and in the future the MIMIC) users can control FIZ with either external motors, or via RED RCP with lenses with internal motorswhen the movi’s left on ON while connected to an empty battery)
  2. I'm wondering if it's the same sliding base plates as the M15, or are they different? Will my M15 tripod adapter still work?
  1. The Baseplate is a new design, and not compatible (sorry! Cost  of improving)
  1. Has anyone tested the Pro in a high speed situation? I am curious to know if the pan motor is more powerful than the one on the M15?
  1. Yes, tested at high speed on ALTA and on Car mount.  Alta unable to cause a blowout, car blows out at 50-80 mph depending on aerodynamic balance of the gimbal
  1. Does the 14v of the dtap mean fs7 users, or any other cameras that draw comparable power, need to power the camera separately still?
  1. Any camera that can run off 11-14v and draws less then 6A should work
  1. Why is the D-tap output on the Aerial package listed as 15 max, and 14 max on handheld? Yep, its me, the dtap guy. :)
  1. Typo ;)
  1. -timeline on shipping dates?
  1. Shipping first units middle of November….then in sequence with order queue
  1. Will the new auto tune come to the m15?
  1. No, M5, 10, and 15 do not have the processing power to run the new style autotune
  1. Where can I find the specs on the MOVI PRO batteries? I want to know how long they will power my system, so I can purchase enough of them.
  1. They power a system with an EPIC or Alexa mini for ~1 hour and take ~1 hour to rechahhrge.  If you are not powering your camera they last much longer
  1. Does Freefly plan to offer some kind of MoVi Brick 2.0 Battery mounting plate with D-tap to allow MoVi Bricks to power MoVi Controller units, Monitors, and the Mimic hand unit assembly? Or will the MoVi Bricks be limited to use on the MoViPro?
  1. Good idea….we might be working on that ;)
  1. Does the integrated FIZ work with RT motion motors?

18.  We put in an order around 2pm PST, how small is that first batch shipping the “middle of november”?  And are these already produced, ready to go?  As in can we safely plan shoots for the end of November?

a:         I don't know the answer to this...we had massive orders so I am not sure how deep this order would fall in the queue.  Well communicate estimated delivery as soon as we know

19.  The original ring could be angle adjusted (movi perfectly in line vs at an angle).  Is this new ring adjustable?  Call us crazy for mounting the ring to cars with suction cups.

a:         The Ring to Tilt angle is not adjustable on MoVI Pro

20.  Looks like the roll bar/motor/GCU portion could be adjusted upward on the 25mm back rods for really compact setups – true?

Not true, the GCU prevents this (gimbal control unit)  But I have been dreaming of a mini movi pro for my A7S!

21.  The new mimic has several 13mm rod quick release attachments.  The store sells additional 13mm plugs (already ordered a 3 pack), are you going to offer additional quick release receivers?  And will you sell additional plates for your pop-n-lock releases?

Good point, Let me chase this down with the team.  For now you can mount 13mm plug on

  • Top handle
  • Low Profile handle
  • MoVI Controller mount
  • Classic Handle

We can look into offering more plates for pop-n-lock

22.  Looks like the new mimic uses the same type of housing/components as the GCU on theback of the MoVI Pro.  In emergency field repair, can the mimic component somehow be hot swapped should the unit on the back of the Pro die?

Good eye, but no the parts are not interchangeable

23.  There are screws on the carbon plate of the roll bar, can we add our own internal cables?

25.  Can the pan rods be shortened/extended like on the m15?

Which arms?  The roll tubes (going out to tilt motor) cannot be extended…..I mean they could, but we don’t recommend it

Meaning slide those pan tubes back towards the GCU, moving the camera back towards the GCU, the pan tubes sliding out the back of the roll assembly?

26 - Are you ever going to have a thumb controller made for the MoVI? People DESPERATELY want this!

I’d love to have this, we are a small team and have to make hard decisions on priorities...if you are a FW developer and can handle the development on it then please contact me and I’ll hire you and we will offer it!

Redrock Micro is working on one called the “Navigator”, supposedly ships by the end of the year.

27 - Why are you promoting the EPIC Dragon so much rather than the new DSMC2 bodies? The RCP control you mention for RED cameras, doesn't it just pass through the CTRL input of the camera? Will the RED integration not work with DSMC2 bodies (Weapon, Epic-W, Scarlet-W and Raven)?

Oh, this is just because those are the cameras Freefly owns ;)  RCP works on everything I am aware ofu

28 - That RED integration, is it only available on the MoVI's screen and MoVI Controller or are there any functions available via the MoVI app?

MoVI App does not yet interface with RCP….but it easily could (Need more time in the day)

29 - Will all current firmwares on the MoVI Pro, MoVI Controller and Mimic have this RED integration?

Yes, all MoVI Pro units we ship with will have this integration.

30 - Are there ANY camera control features available via the app? (no matter which camera)

Not for launch, but totally possible down the line.

31 - Are there any functions mentioned in the promotional video that will not be available on release of the product?

Not to my knowledge...I may have mentioned FIZ control via MIMIC which isn't currently enabled.

32 - If I understand well, there are 3x DTAP power outputs (2x 2A, 1x 6A); How many amps can be pulled at once with one MoVI battery? With two batteries?

The power rating for each port is valid in all circumstances.

  • Camera output 6A
  • 2 Accy port - 2A

You can pull 10A from all 3 ports at once max

35 - Do you have a spares part/repair/emergency type kit for the MoVI Pro?

Not yet, we have spare parts on hand but no kit built yet.

36 - What firmware will come on the MoVI Pro? Akira?

MoVI Pro V1.0 (or later) FW. Functionally similar to Akira + some new features for MoVI Pro.

37 - Will there be spares available for the screen at the back of the MoVI Pro? Would it be a user friendly fix or will it need to be sent back to you?

Not user friendly to repair….  We have not broken one yet in the field but certainly a valid concern!  It's always an incredibly hard trade off between integration and repairability.  Engineering team fights about it daily!

38 - What is the maximum speed the MoVI Pro can handle with a heavy payload (say 6kg)? Says 100km/ph dependant on payload on the spec sheet I got

Max speed will depend more on aerodynamic balance than payload weight, but it has been tested at 60mph+ with large payloads (see #10).

39 - Are there any adapters or pro chargers compatible with the new MoVI Pro batteries for discharging before travel/storage?

Only current way to discharge is on MoVI Pro

40 - Are the new MoVI Pro batteries at risk like the current ones for M5/10/15 are when it comes to voltages per cell? Current batteries are considered dead when below a certain voltage (something that happened a few times on our M10 and M15

No, the MoVI Pro batteries have an internal low voltage cutoff that monitors each cell.

41 - Release video mentioned $1 per gram of weight reduction.  What’s metal what’s plastic?  I remember that being one of the big differences to justify the price of the m5 vs m15.  We’ve put our m15 through hell (never had a problem, you guys make great stuff).  GCU looks plastic – any durability difference?  Are the batteries hard plastic outside or rubberized?  Power / FIZ box under the cage?  Roll bar assembly?  How tough are the plastic feet of the ring?

  • GCU - plastic
  • Batt - Plastic non rubberized
  • TSU / FIZ - machined 6061 Alu
  • Roll beam is machined 6061 with carbon fiber closeout panel
  • Feet are made of glass reinforced nylon plastic….super tough!

42 - IP52, safe to call it rain proof?  Rain resistant?

Here is a reference for all IP standards -> http://www.dsmt.com/resources/ip-rating-chart/

IP52

Protected from limited dust ingress.

Protected from water spray less than 15 degrees from vertical.

**So depends on the rain you get. According to https://goo.gl/mlGgY -> Water equivalent to 3 mm rainfall per minute

43 - Average battery runtime compared to the m15 with a similar load? (assuming powering no accessories on either)

New batteries 40Wh, old batteries 38Wh. So it would be a little more than twice as MōVI Pro can use two batteries at the same time. **Given same weight, balance ,etc.

44 How much do the new batteries weigh? It says 2,65kg on the Movi Pro, is this with or without batteries?

Batteries weigh 300g a piece Thanks! What is the weight of the Movi Pro with batteries in aerial setup?

45 - What are the batteries’ dimensions?

46- Would love avoiding bongo ties and improvised machined adaptations. Could the Pop-N-Lock plates be used to mount my wireless transmitter in between the machined / hydra form structure (curved pan rails). Will this affect balance if only using on one side? What is the spacing between holes for the Pop-N-Lock plates? I want to use them to place my ReadyRig GS “Spindle” Mount on the Ring Pro for when I use my vest.

Yes, you can use the pop n lock for this.  I am using it to mount wireless both on the 15mm cage as well as the 25mm tubes when I use the connex system.

47- Integrated FIZ ports are great but using the MoVI Controller for focusing when there is a first AC is not that great. Might be the same when using in the future the new Mimic. Does the Mimic unit have CBUS or any other expansion port for any future accessories (smart knob as a suggestion).

It’s on our minds ;)

48 - I've never used the mimic before as I need 500m minimum range for all my gear on the Alta. If the range of the mimic 2 is only 300m can you use a futaba          for controlling tilt/pan/roll then simultaneously use the mimic for controlling the camera and fiz where the range isn't so critical? Want all the new features the mimic offers but can't afford to only have 300m range.

You can use futaba if you need more range, but won’t be able to control camera and fiz from it for the time being.

49 - I currently use a Bartech for Focus, and a Paralinx Tomahawk for wireless video.  On the M15, I’ve put them on the top of the cage  so I can keep all the wiring tight to the camera.  Now that the battery and cabling is integrated, and there’s a 6A port for camera and one 2A port for accessories, will the 2A port be enough for both Wireless Focus and Video?  Or do I need to plan on moving the Video Transmitter to the back of the gimbal for the other 2A power port and run an SDI cable?

I am not sure what kind of current the tomahawk and bartech pull, but I think it should work OK. It’s been awhile since I used the Bartech.  Typically FIZ systems only draw very low average currents with medium to high bursts.  The wireless systems are typically around the 1A range on average current draw.  I have good confidence, but have not tested this exact setup!  Thanks!  I think the Tomahawk is 1.5A, and the Bartech is very small nominally, but it doesn’t say what happens when the motor kicks in.

50.  Will the Movi Pro include a free T-Shirt or Hat?   :)

I sure hope so!

51. Are you talking with Arri? The Alexa Mini is the most popular camera right now[a], and it would be good to have access to the menu’s on the coontroller and mimic.

He said that Arri isn’t open source like Red so it might never happen.

I am talking with ARRI, they are waiting to see how much interest / pressure we can generate.  If we let them know how important this is, then they might open it up.  Tweet at Michael Jonas! xx

Done. Sounds like we got a result! Thanks Arri for listening.

52. In the video you talk about a two man team. But, on-set for the bulk of professional crews, it is a three man team with the 1st AC. Will there be a FIZ handset released?

Already answered in the FIZ section

53. We use Paralinx Tomahawk’s and have found that they work a lot better when mounted vertically on the top of the M15 cross bar. Is there internal wiring and power for this? (SDI, and Lemo 2 pin out).

No, only the ptap on top of the gimbal control unit

54. With the positioning of the monitor mount on the top handle, is there clearance for an easy rig to connect without fouling?

Not sure, have not tried this.  I think it should work.  If not you can definitely remove the mount

55. Has there been an improvement in the cold weather operating specifications? Or is it the same as M15?

What issues did you have specifically?  Batt performance in cold weather?

56. Does the Mimic handlebar include any mounting options for battery plates (V-Mount, Gold Mount), this is to power both monitor and wireless receiver?

No, it’s an accessory

57. Are there any plans to either create a Freefly FIZ handset or make the built in FIZ compatible with other handsets other than the Movi Controller?

Already answered in the FIZ section

58.  Is ‘Roll Flip’ a new feature?  Or is this the same as on the M15, where you can mount the Movi on top or bottom with the TITH?  I don’t see a difference but it seems to be promoted as a new thing.  Maybe I’m missing something?

New feature, you can’t roll 180 with M15

59. Can the distance between the roll motor and the pan motor be adjusted - this would be great for reducing distance/CG from mount point esp for mounting on a Steadicam sled.

No, the gimbal control module is fixed

60. Is the comms port on the Mimic going to be available for 3rd party applications, and what, if any, overhead is there when inputting instructions vs. Mimic control speed (which appears to be the fastest response RC available for MoVI currently)? IOW will the protocol be open for 3rd party development?

We are working on defining our strategy here.  I think we will pubish some of our QX protocol for 3rd part developers to use.  This would allow them to interface with certain aspects of the gimbal and command thinks like:

  • RCP
  • Pan / Tilt / Roll rate
  • Pan / Tilt / Roll position
  • Modes
  • Etc.

We are still working out the details but this is where our head is at right now

61. Can you demonstrate running a c300-2 + power via d-tap from the mpro + connect a lanc-cable to see what works and not? Any solution for controlling the c300-2 Dual AF instead of using focus motors externally? Any grip-extension option? +1 I also would like to see the lanc cable in action on some systems. . . .

Copy that, I will try this out when I get a chance (need camera)

REPLY: PLS FEATURE A VIDEO ABOUT THE COMPLICATED C300-2 (mounting + the mentioned above)+1

I have the LANC cable but fail to see where you can trigger the record for any Canon C camera..?

62. Can you mount a female toad in the hole clamp with a 30mm quick-clamp on the bottom of the ring(between the feet) to attach the mpro to a toad on a stick with a glidecam-vest/arm?

Glidecam-arm-->toad on a stick--->toad in a hole clamp--->30mm quick release clamp--->movimpro ring bottom?

I dont think thats a good idea...quick clamp not deigned for that kind of weight.  But you could use a more robust clamp

REPLY: WILL

YOU DEVELOP ACLAMP OPTION FOR VESTS/ARMS (4th Axis)?

G

63. Why had you guys use 13mm for the quick release plug, i am running my accessories on zacuto 15mm zud (rods) - can you offer also a 15mm option? Would help me stay agile with my already current equipment.

13mm ship has sailed!

64. Do you have a list of compatible camera+lens setups? Like Alexa Mini plus Master prime lens is working on movi pro or not?

Not yet, we are working on it.  For the time being just the camera cage dimensions

65. Is there any chance we will see upgrades to the range on the Movi controller?

Yes, 2 things could potentially happen

  1. Ultra long range module
  2. Switch MoVI Controller to RMO24 Module (same one in RT motion and MoVI Pro)

That said, you should be getting 1000 feet with MoVI Controller, if you are not, let's figure out why!

66.You said there would be a  “multi controller infrastructure that will allow controls to be split up between multiple input devices”. . . . . . How many?

4 at the same time max, 5 if you count bluetooth / app

67. Is there opportunity to power the gimbal externally, i.e. bypassing the on-board battery system (sometimes minimising gimbal weight is desirable when cabling in from another power source).

Sure, you can buy the mating molex connector and wire up a DC input if you like!

68.  The direction I have to roll the gimbal is different than in that link, because I want to attach it to a support vest first. I can't flip it left-to-right once it's clipped in, only front-to-back. Also, I can't dock the Movi in Top Mount because the weight naturally wants to flip back over, so it has to start out in underslung and then be flipped when I pick up the gimbal.

Here's another way to ask it: What happens on the Movi Pro when you leave the motors engaged and basically keep tilting up until you've turned the Toad upside down and then hold it there? Does the camera then remain upside down? Still operable? Do the internal cables\Roper Flipper get in the way, or does it try to right itself?

69. Can the Movi Pro provide data for vfx shots?

70. I have recieved my Movi Pro handheld bundle and its great! I would like to be able to use the handle bar currently used for the mimic to operate the MoVI Pro in the “classic” setup. But there is no toad in the hole. Will you guys consider selling a Clamp Handle Toad separately? (As I have no need for 2 sets of handlebars… or the space in my case.)

71. The RED RCP cable is too short to reach the control port on the RED Weapon without a jetpack module, will you consider a recall on the cable? Or maybe releasing an extension cable?

71-2. I’m using the RED RCP cable with DSMC2 V-mount Expander. Even though it works for the moment, if I put some more weight on the front of the camera, i will need to slide the camera backwards and the cable might break. It would be great if you provide us a longer cable, and recall this one.

72. Is it possible to have the Mimic controlling the Movi Pro gimbal whilst still being able to have control over FIZ on the same Mimic ?

Aerial

  1. Is the handheld to aerial conversion similar to the previous Movi+Alta in respect to time required to transition? On the m5, swapping the keyed yaw tube, mounting the landing gear with screws, etc.

Similar to what?

Freefly Action Items

  1. Check on 13mm plug receiver spares
  2. Check on Pop-n-lock spare plates
  3. Line drawing of Pop n lock
  4. Line drawing of camera plate

Additional Comment in regards to Question 21: 13mm Plug Receiver spares - Could a receiver mount be made that fits the landing gear mounting point on the bottom of the GCU. This way, when using inverted on a tripod for timelapse, a monitor can be attached easily. The mount from the low profile handle would work perfect except that the screws don’t line up.

Cool idea, but no that would not work (unless you want to get really wild)

24.  Material for the removable hand-stops (on the ring)?

It’s a soft (~50A Shore TPU)  If you don’t like the feel you can flip them over and have them smooth

73. What is the inner diameter of the MoVI Ring Pro’s carbon fiber?  (I believe the outer diameter is 30mm according the documentation.)

33 - Regarding the pop n lock quick release adapters you sell, which bars on the MoVI Pro are 15mm, 25mm and 30mm?

  • MoVI ring - 30mm
  • Classic handle - 25mm
  • Top handle - 25mm
  • Low profile handle - 25mm
  • Pan Tubes - 25mm
  • Roll arms - 25mm
  • Camera Cage - dual 15mm

34 - How will the MoVI Pro ship? In a cardboard box like the M15?

Cardboard box, big hard case is optional

[a]I am not sure this is true
