The children will:

  • Identify what sound is.
  • Describe the properties of sounds.

How do you think the sound traveled? 

  1.  Display different objects.
  2. Have the children name objects and describe the sound that it makes.
  3. Discuss that sound travels through the air and is something we can hear.
  4. Discuss animal sound.
  5. Ask: What sounds it make? Is it soft or loud?
  6. Discuss musical instruments.
  7. Ask: What kind of sound did it make? Is it high or low?
  8. The teacher will explain how sound travels through air to a telephone.
  9. Have the children make a telephone.
  10. Distribute paper cups and yarn.
  11. Have the children place string on on the hole of the paper cup.
  12. Have them experience how sound travels.
  13. Ask: What is this object called? What can you do with it? What did you hear? How do you think the sound traveled? What do you think will happen if someone pins the string?
