For this project, each student will find an article in his or her discipline, and then share this article with the class. From there, you’ll each prepare a written discussion of the article for the online discussion board, and then come to class prepared to lead a discussion on the article itself.
In particular, the Article Project is meant to help us see how individual articles within a discipline are produced, distributed, and ultimately used.
Areas to look at in your write-up and discussion:
- Where do we see the elements of CHAT at work? Do all the elements of CHAT apply?
- Which citation practices are used in the article? Are these standard practices for your discipline? (And how do you know?)
- How does this article contribute to you understanding of the Course Project?
- What research did you need to do (in addition to reading the article) in order to fully understand how this article fits within the discourse community?
Questions to Consider
- How long should the write-ups be? Would it be better to have two or three “short” write-ups, or one very long, in-depth write-up?
- Should we limit the lengths of the articles? Or should we have the author choose certain pages for the entire class to read, and then everyone will primarily focus on the student’s presentation?
- What are the components of an effective presentation? What are the components of an effective discussion? How do these differ?
- What would be an appropriate percentage of the final grade for this project?
