Lesson 2: How do settlement patterns affect cultural characteristics?

Practice Activity

Instructions: Choose one of the following practice activities to complete. Be sure to include the following:

1. Vocabulary: Culture, Migration

2. Explain how the four types of migration (economic, social, political, and environmental) affect the culture of the people in the United States and Canada. Be sure to include the 7 elements of culture (social organizations, customs & traditions, arts & literature, language, religion, form of government, economic system).

3. Be sure your practice activity will score well on the rubric.

OPTION 1

Using the maps of the United States and Canada that depict the leading ethnicity by county, create a map of your own that explains the culture of the different groups. Your map can be 2D and should include symbols/pictures for each major group. Your map can be 3D and should include artifacts that represent each group. Be sure to include as many of the 7 elements of culture as possible. Be creative and have fun  

OPTION 2

Using the maps of the United States and Canada that depict the leading ethnicity by county, create a mosaic that shows where people of different cultures live in the United States and Canada. Your mosaic tiles should also include a representation of at least one of the 7 elements of culture.  Be creative and have fun

OPTION 3

Choose 1 of the following cultures found in the US & Canada. Find 3-5 influences they have on American or Canadian society. Then create a video, song, brochure, or write an essay explaining how your life would be different without those influences.

Choose your own way of demonstrating mastery. Use the How do I demonstrate mastery? list of activities to help you choose.
