A. Motivation
- Good morning class, today we are going on a virtual field trip to Africa to learn about their culture and masks!
B. Instructional Procedures
- First day: What is Africa?
- State that Africa is a Continent.
- What is a Continent?
- Explain what a Continent is.
- Where is Africa on the map?
- Show students where Africa is on the map.
- Answer questions students may have about Africa and a Continent.
- Students will view videos about African culture on the SMARTboard.
- What is Culture?
- State the definition of culture.
- Second day: students will view videos about African masks on the SMARTboard.
- What is a mask?
- State the definition of mask.
- Students will view examples of handmade masks on the SMARTboard.
- Discuss mask project.
- Students will use African culture techniques to make a mask.
- Students will explain what they learned about African culture.
- Third day: students will review African culture and masks.
- Students will color an African mask worksheet.
- Students will research African mask designs on the iPad.
- Students will view examples of handmade masks made by students.
- Students will be given examples of materials they can use in order to complete the mask.
- Fourth day: Review Africa, Continent, culture, and masks for the last time.
- Students begin making masks.
- Last day: Students present their mask project to the class.
- Students will describe their mask and what they learned about African culture.
- The teacher will evaluate students by using a rubric.
C. Closure
- Teacher and students will have a discussion about what was learned about African culture and masks.
- Teacher will state the next virtual field trip the students will be taking.
