A. Ultimate Palestine 4 Calls to Action:

  1. Active advocacy for immediate ceasefire.
  2. Active advocacy for provision of humanitarian aid.

All of these calls are contained in Ultimate Palestine’s original public statement.

Responses to Objections

  1. The ultimate community didn’t cause these problems, and we cannot resolve this complex centuries old conflict either.
  • Members of our community are directly affected by this
  • Sports are political
  • This statement comes from a position of privilege.
  • Not all WFDF delegations are treated equally; a lot of delegations in our community are not provided equal access to events, funding, rights, etc.
  • Ultimate positions itself as an inclusive and progressive sport.
  • The conflict is 75 years old. Portraying it as being “complex centuries old conflict” betrays a lazy attitude that complicates things in order to justify inaction and apathy.

  1. This is more complex than Ukraine and I don’t think they are comparable.
  • This is not complicated; this is settler colonial violence.
  • Both Ukraine and Palestine are dealing with an illegal military occupation over their respective lands.
  • The United States is directly responsible for facilitating and enabling Israeli occupation of Palestine and the genocide in Gaza, so this is arguably more relevant to us than Ukraine
  • Worth considering why the objector doesn’t view Ukraine and Palestinian struggles for self determination the same. Some objections seem to stem from western/white double-standards that refuse to humanize Palestinians and empathize with their suffering.

  1. I am concerned that a permanent ceasefire allows Hamas to continue to do this again and again.
  • Asking for a ceasefire is a basic humanitarian position that indicates that we want to protect life. Refusing a ceasefire effectively means that we don’t mind (and support!) the killing of children and innocents.
  • A ceasefire is the only guarantor for the release of both Israeli and Palestinian hostages and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
  • War and death only emboldens Hamas and serve as an effective recruitment campaign to drive more Palestinians towards armed struggle.
  • Using Hamas as a talking point to dehumanize Palestinians is a red-herring to justify an unwillingness to stand for Palestinian rights and their struggle for freedom and self-determination.
  • We cannot bomb our way to peace; there is no military solution here (we’ve seen this over and over again with Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Vietnam, etc.)
  • Blaming the people that are victimized by settler colonial violence is not productive

  1. Why doesn’t the statement condemn Hamas?
  • Condemning those who struggle for freedom is unproductive.
  •  This isn’t just about Hamas, a number of resistance groups are fighting alongside each other.
  • This shuts down the conversation and refuses to acknowledge the context as to why there is a resistance and armed struggle in the first place. What is being resisted?

  1. Saying genocide/Palestinian liberation is offensive to me.
  • It is worth examining why you feel that way, is it because you don’t believe the Palestinians deserve to live/liberation?
  • Is it because you are making assumptions as to what that looks like?
  • This statement is often a product of racial chauvinism
