How can you find minerals in a rock?

- Read Aloud

- Whole Group: Use the rocks to investigate and look for color, texture, shininess, hardness and streak.

- Guided Practice: Complete a graph about the properties of the minerals.

- How does the rock look and feel?

- Check for hardness. Is the rock soft enough to scratch with your fingernail? Why or Why not?

- How many minerals do you think your rock contains?

What can you tell about soil and sand?

- Whole Group: Use pictures to introduce sand and soil.  

- Small Group: Supply a plate of sand and soil for each group and have them investigate the properties of sand and soil by using sense of sight, touch and smell.

- Independent Practice: Compare and Contrast sand and soil.  

- What can you learn about sand and soil when you look at it and touch it?

- How are sand and soil the same and different?

- Would sand or soil be better for growing plants that need a lot of water? Why?
