Year 6 Team Newsletter Term 1 - 2015

Kia Ora Parents/Caregivers

Well, the new school year is upon us all of a sudden and what a busy term it promises to be. The Year 6 teachers have been very  pleased to see the students return as great role models to the rest of the school . Thank you to those parents that have ensured that their child is wearing the correct uniform and is arriving at school ready to learn.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new team member,  Mrs Alicia Howard who will be team teaching with Mrs Raenette Taljaard.  They are jointly responsible for Rm 20, which will have the use of two spaces (Rm19 and Rm20) this year as they are following a Modern Learning Environment model.  Starting in Week 3 each teacher will be in class on alternate weeks and the other teacher will be running either the Music (RT) or Sport/PE (AH) programme in that time.  Please feel free to contact either Mrs Taljaard or Mrs Howard if issues arise, as they will be collaborating closely on a daily basis.

Rm 21 continues to be the Boys Class and Mrs Lucy Adamson is their teacher.  She is also responsible for Peer Mediator training and later in the year for Gymnastics and Athletics. Mrs Dawn Walker is the Team Leader for Year 6 and teacher in Rm 22. She is responsible for the Swimming Team and the School Councillors.

This term the students will be setting goals for the year and being encouraged to be active participants in school-wide roles and responsibilities e.g. School Councillors, Wet Day Monitors, Peer Mediation, Enviro Leaders etc.  These responsibilities will be assigned over the next few weeks.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING (PIE)/CAMP MEETING/BYOD MEETING

On Wednesday 18th February we are inviting parents and carers to attend a Parent Information evening followed by an introductory information session about the school camp later in the year. We recommend that you attend these talks as the Year 6 teachers will be sharing expectations about the year with you and answering any questions you may have. The meetings will start in the auditorium at 6pm.

Following this meeting, there will be an information session about BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).  At Elm Park School this year, five classes will be trialling this option and students in these classes will be offered the choice to bring along a specified laptop to school later in the year.  Parents of Room 22 are invited to meet in the Auditorium at 7.00 pm, where we will outline what the trial will involve and the requirements for participating.  Please note that BYOD is only an option and it is not an expectation that any parents purchase the specified device unless they choose to.  All students will continue to have access to school-owned ICT equipment whether or not they are in a BYOD trial class.

Inquiry

Term 1’s Inquiry work is centred around Learning Focussed Relationships. The students will be involved in conversations and activities that look at their learning (what it feels like, looks like, fears they may have, reflections and goals). This work aims to make the students aware of their own learning and what they can work on to succeed.

Mathematics

All students will be taught by their class teacher this year. Teachers and students will reflect on strengths and weaknesses and teaching will be linked to these. In the early part of this term we will be carrying out assessments with the students and using the information to plan their next steps.

E- Portfolios

These are work in progress by the students and the teachers. In the next few weeks your child will be returning to  their learning blog and site, which will be used for their class teacher to report on their assessment and achievement levels. Please take time to share and discuss these with your child.

P.E

The focus this term is on cooperation skills and teamwork through various ball activities. We are fortunate enough to have Youthtown supporting the students with this on Tuesdays. In addition to this we are pleased to be working with Counties Manukau Sports again, practising our bike skills. This will also be on Tuesdays. We would like all students to be confident at riding a bike by term 4 so that we can include this activity as a rotation at Camp Merc. Please can you make sure that your child has the correct P.E kit on the day they have P.E. It is a school expectation that students leave school in their school uniform and not their P.E kit. Thank you for your cooperation.

Homework

Teachers  will set homework to fit the needs of the class. Homework may vary from teacher to teacher. Please support your child with their homework, share their learning experiences and try to make learning as fun as possible for them.  Speak to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns about homework and meeting deadlines.
