Bi-weekly Report – 30th Oct
Project Title: City Pollution Smartwatch App
Group Members: Madeleine Whitehall, Srikrishna Datla
Progress
- We have been researching the datasets for pollution that our client has requested we investigate and we have come up with a list of potential datasets as well as what information they can provide
- We have also been working towards creating a static website that can be used for the project
- Our team has coordinated with Team 15 to create a model of what the app and its various elements will do and how they will be able to process and receive data. This has allowed us to divide up work between the two teams as well as make some decisions on the technologies that we are going to use
Meetings
27 / 10 / 2015
- We have had our second meeting with Steven and he has provided us with very useful information for requirements and to make progress in our work.
- Our client has outlined the following regarding our project:
- We should make use of 3 datasets to provide the pollution information and they should each have a specific update time interval: live, daily / weekly, monthly / annually. This will allow us to use historic data and live updates to provide a wide range of data for the user to view and select specific information that they would like to see
- We should prioritise data based on their update times and the type of information provided from the dataset. Specific datasets such as the Intel Smart Citizen will not provide all the information about air pollution that we require, so it may be more useful to check the London air API query results for these fields.
- The application should make use of the Phone to Smartwatch data transfer service and should have all calculations on the datasets performed on the phone, with the smartwatch just performing display duties.
- We should come up with 10 – 15 visualisations for the project and during our next meeting we will be able to see what visualisations work best and how we can about implementing them on the selected hardware
- We should also come up with a list of smartwatches that we are considering using and if they are in budget, we will be able to request for these
- We have also had a small informal meeting on 29/10/2015 to discuss the project and what our roles in both team 15 and 16 will be.
- We have decided that Madeleine and Mingqian will be the frontend developer and that Henry and Srikrishna will be the backend developers
- We have decided that 2 datasets that we will definitely use are the London Air project and the Smart Citizen API.
- Our teams have come up with a simple model of the interactions between APIs and the Smartwatch.
Items to Resolve
- Our team should look into the hardware that we require and make a request to our client to see whether we can get smartwatches that may be easier to work with.
- Organise a meeting with our TA, Carlos, to discuss whether the ideas we have for splitting our team is within the module specification
Plan
- Create a detailed model for the application processes and the technologies that it will use.
- Decide on the 3 datasets that we are going to use for the product
- Liaise with the client about the possible hardware options such as smartwatch and android phone
- Decide on the technologies that we will use for the backend and frontend for the project, and how we are going to split the project work inside our team.
- Produce 10 – 15 possible visualisations for the project, specifically aimed at UI organisation for the smartwatch app as well as general models of the inner workings of the android phone and the smartwatch
Srikrishna Tasks
- The last two weeks have been focused on the research that we require about datasets as well as how we are going to divide up the project work for both teams and within our team. We organised another meeting with the client to discuss the research and requirements for our project as well as where we can split our work.
- I have been working on creating a website using Polymer as a framework to use as a static website for both teams in order to post research and project work.
- I have also been working on data research on the datasets that we can use, and have created a list of the potential datasets as well as the information that they carry. We have provided this information to the client and they have asked that we select 3 to go ahead with.
- I have looked into potential backend technologies that we can use for the server and will research more into these.
Madeleine Tasks
- We assigned titles and tasks this week and I am in charge of the ‘front end’ of the application.
- This entails sending out queries to the server database and receiving the results back from the phone app and then displaying that information on the smart watch. Java is the language that we will be using so I spent the past week refreshing my memory through notes and practice.
- We also had to come up with some UI designs and proposals for the clients to decide on so I looked into the particular watch we are going to get, probably the Sony Smartwatch 3, looking at the screen dimensions and resolutions in order to get the best picture and result.
