STAR TREK INTO THE LIGHT

EXT - AUTUMN

Wide shot of the landscape over a town on the planet Autumn, a Federation planet part of the future Neutral Zone with the Romulans. Cuts close to people moving through the town, visiting vendors and going about their day.

Sounds of an alarm roar and people soon hear the sound of something flying overhead. A few people look up and watch a Romulan Warbird fly past.

The warbird fires down at the town. People scream and run to hide. Another warbird appears, de-cloaking and firing as well.

More cuts of people running as buildings and areas are destroyed from the blasts. Cuts of officers grabbing rifles and attempting to fire back into the sky.

EXT - OUTPOST HANGAR

Several officers are boarding ships in the hangar and preparing to exit for a fight. Close-up of a few and then cut away to show a Warbird firing a torpedo into the hangar, destroying it.

INT - OUTPOST CONTROL

A Federation officer runs into the control room and sets up to send a message.

OFFICER

Come in Starfleet. We are under attack. Please respond. I repeat, we are under attack. Attackers appear to be Romulan. I am transmitting what data is being recorded by our systems. Any starships in the area, we need help immediately. Please respond. I repeat, we-

The outpost is destroyed and the transmission ends. Cuts to a wide show of the town, now heavily on fire and being bombarded with more attacks.

INT - ROMULAN SHIP BRIDGE

Shows a captain sitting and observing the view screen.

ROMULAN ENSIGN

Bombardment 72% complete Commander.

COMMANDER SORAK (PATRICK WILSON)

Excellent. And what of the distortion signal we picked up earlier?

ROMULAN ENSIGN

There are no longer any residual waves being detected. It’s possible they are emanating from a ship which has already left orbit.

COMMANDER SORAK

Hrrrrr, finish the attack on the planet, and order the other vessels to stay behind. Begin scanning immediately for any traces of it.

ROMULAN

Yes, Commander.

Close up on Sorak.

SORAK

We will find that ship.

MAIN TITLE SEQUENCE

EXT - NEW VULCAN

Wide shot of the cityscape on an area of New Vulcan. Cuts bring the scene in to cover a funeral procession.

Brings in the shot to show Kirk and Spock at the front of the casket, holding the rails as it hovers. Cuts show other members of the Enterprise crew along the sides as the carriers walk by. Closes wide scenes by entering a sanctuary.

Narration by funeral speaker as it takes place.

INT - SANCTUARY

Cut away at the various crew members sitting down as the speaker rests the casket on stage.

SPEAKER

A friend of his, James Kirk, has offered to speak here today. Please welcome him.

KIRK (CHRIS PINE)

Thank you. We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored friend. I only knew Mr. Spock for a short time. We had, an unusual circumstance of meeting. It was in a cave. He had been left stranded by an enemy. I on the other hand was stranded by, him. A younger version anyway.

Cut to Uhura smiling and taking Spock’s hand. And then cutting back to Kirk.

KIRK

I could stand up here and tell you about his sense of duty. His profound wisdom. All of us are familiar with that side of him. Instead I want to remind everyone that, in the midst of our sorrow, this loss takes place in the shadow of new life still in its infancy, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade spent his remaining years nourishing. He tended to it with the utmost of logic, and the gentlest of care. Of my friend, I can say this: Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most….

Pans to show Kirk looking out at Spock.

KIRK

….human.

EXT - SANCTUARY

People are exiting the sanctuary. Some are standing around to talk with each other. A few people come by and express their condolences to Spock before Uhura takes him aside as he appears nervous.

UHURA (ZOE SALDANA)

Spock, are you alright?

SPOCK (ZACHARY QUINTO)

I do not know. It is complicated to be attending one’s own funeral. While it is appreciated to see so many here, I am concerned at how few friends I have present in my last moment.

UHURA

Hey, this is not your funeral. You understand me? Ambassador Spock lived an entirely different life you will never have, in a world you will never know. You are not alone, Spock.

Uhura brings him close to hold before Spock can respond. Scene cuts and pans to Kirk as he is walking down the steps to leave. He opens his communicator to check on his messages.

EDITOR

Jim, giving you a quick update. I finished reading your book, and it’s good to me. I’m passing it on up the ladder to my editor for review next. Soon as I get his feedback I’ll be in touch. Oh, and Jim, I’m sorry about the funeral. The afterword was a nice touch.

SCOTTY (SIMON PEGG)

So you’re a writer now? I suppose it was a good speech; I’m sure Spock appreciated it, but didn’t take you for having the patience to sit down and actually write more than a page.

KIRK

Yeah I guess. Spock’s always hiding how he feels. I have no idea how he is handling the funeral of his older self.

SCOTTY

Good thing he has Uhura. [breaks to cut to Uhura holding Spock from Kirk and Scotty’s position] She’ll keep him on his feet; a good woman like her.

KIRK

Yeah…. [breaks to cut back to Kirk and Scotty] And hey, I can write.

SCOTTY

Oh sure. Plenty of time now that you’re an admiral and all. You can order everyone else around to take care of things.

KIRK

Speaking of ordering people, Scotty I need you back on the ship. I’d like to be aboard for a while in case Spock wants to talk. And he’s too busy right now to remind you it needs to be ready to depart once everyone’s aboard.

SCOTTY

You got it Admiral. I’ll have her ready in no time. I’m sure the crew will be happy to have you walking the decks again.

KIRK

I’ll be right behind you.

Scotty leaves the scene and Kirk steps away to check on his communicator. He plays his next message.

CAROL MARCUS (ALICE EVE)

Jim, it’s me. Look I know you’re busy with everything going on, but we need to talk. First chance you get, I’m expecting a message back this time. Talk to you soon.

Kirk sighs and puts the communicator away.

INT - ENTERPRISE

Kirk is walking through a hallway with Chekov.

CHEKOV (ANTON YELCHIN)

It’s good to have you back captain. Will you be staying for a while?

KIRK

It’s admiral now Chekov. And no, I need to get back to Earth. Only staying for a little while now that the funeral’s over.

CHEKOV

We could always find ways to delay if you wanted to stay for a bit longer. Visit a moon, accidentally warp to Orion.

KIRK

Haha well with an offer like that I’d feel bad refusing…. It’s Spock’s ship now though….

CHEKOV

Mr. Spock is a great captain. I am sure he will appreciate having you by his side on the bridge again.

KIRK

Hopefully, we’ll-

A communication interrupts the conversation as they stand outside Kirk’s quarters.

SULU (JOHN CHO)

Admiral, this is the bridge.

KIRK

Hear you loud and clear Mr. Sulu. What can I do for you?

SULU

You have a Priority One message coming in from Earth sir.

KIRK

Alright, patch it through to my quarters and I’ll take it here.

Kirk motions that Chekov has to leave due to the priority of the message. Chekov leaves.

SULU

Yes sir.

INT - ENTERPRISE KIRK’S QUARTERS

Kirk enters his quarters and the transmission comes on as Kirk approaches the screen.

ADMIRAL RILEY

Kirk, I apologize for interrupting at a time like this.

KIRK

It’s alright Admiral. What’s going on?

ADMIRAL RILEY

We picked up a distress signal from the planet Autumn. One of the town outposts are under attack.

KIRK

Autumn? It’s just a regular Federation colony. Was anything going on there to get attention?

ADMIRAL RILEY

No. And sadly, the transmission was too damaged to get much. Jim, the Enterprise is the closest ship. We need you to check it out.

KIRK

We don’t exactly know who to watch out for. I thought we had a survey ship out that way?

ADMIRAL RILEY

The Aldridge and Zephyr were last reported in the area, but we haven’t been able to reach them.

KIRK

Haven’t been able to reach them?

ADMIRAL RILEY

Jim, we don’t know what’s going on out there, and we need to know as soon as possible. The next closest ship is the Umbrage, and it’s already heading to Autumn. The Enterprise will beat them there.

KIRK

Alright. The Enterprise will get underway immediately. Soon as we arrive I’ll get in touch.

ADMIRAL RILEY

Thanks Jim.

Kirk ends the transmission and sets down his jacket before signaling the comms.

KIRK

Bridge, come in.

SULU

Bridge here Admiral.

KIRK

Mr. Sulu, I need you to get everyone back aboard the Enterprise immediately, and inform senior staff to assemble in Captain Spock’s ready room.

SULU

Yes sir.

INT - ENTERPRISE HALLWAY

Kirk comes around a corner and is joined by McCoy.

MCCOY (KARL URBAN)

Jim, that the blazes is going on? Everyone’s mourning, and now we’re suddenly being told to haul back aboard so we can leave? They’re barely finished setting up for the wake.

KIRK

Good thing Vulcan’s don’t hold wakes.

MCCOY

Not funny. Seriously, where are we going?

KIRK

Autumn.

MCCOY

It’s summer Jim.

KIRK

Actually it’s spring. You really need to take some shore leave you know that?

INT - ENTERPRISE ELEVATOR

KIRK

Bridge

MCCOY

What’s Autumn?

KIRK

A planet the Federation recently settled in the Beta quadrant.

MCCOY

The Beta Quadrant? You all settled a planet surrounded by the Gorn, the Klingons, and the Romulans. What idiot thought up that idea?

KIRK

Not important right now.

MCCOY

I see.

INT - ENTERPRISE HALLWAY

Kirk and McCoy exit the elevator and are met by Sulu. They all walk over together.

SULU

Admiral, all senior staff are assembled except for us. Remaining crew are either in transport or on shuttles.

KIRK

Thanks Sulu. Soon as the meeting ends and everyone is aboard I need to set course at maximum warp.

SULU

Of course. Where are we headed?

KIRK

I’ll explain that.

INT - ENTERPRISE SPOCK’S READY ROOM

UHURA

Admiral, this is ridiculous. You just gave a speech at the funeral less than an hour ago and already you’re dragging us back to the ship?!

SPOCK

Uhura….

UHURA

We are the only people Ambassador Spock felt like he knew in this world! We’re supposed to be down there supporting his people!

KIRK

Uhura.

UHURA

No, this is-

KIRK

Uhura! I know, and I’m sorry. Right now we may have a problem.

They wait for everyone to gather around.

KIRK

Starfleet received a distress signal. A Federation colony on the planet Autumn is under attack. The two closest ships in the area can’t seem to be reached, and we’re next in line. Those colonists need us, despite what we’re all going through right now. That’s all we know. Any questions?

MCCOY

I’ll need to prep the med bay for possible injuries if they’re under attack. How many colonists were there?

KIRK

A little over 300.

MCCOY

Alright.

SCOTTY

I’ll run diagnostics on the ships and weapons. Who knows what we might find?

SPOCK

Admiral, under the circumstances it would be best if you assume command of the Enterprise for this mission.

UHURA

Spock….

KIRK

Spock that isn’t necessary.

SPOCK

You are the most senior officer aboard. You are also more familiar with Autumn and the circumstances. The only sound course of action would be to have you take command.

KIRK

Spock, it’s your ship. I’m just here for the ride.

SPOCK

Jim. Please.

Everyone looks around silently. Kirk looks over at Spock and nods.

KIRK

Everyone’s dismissed to your stations.

They begin exiting the room.

KIRK

Uhura, a word.

UHURA

Yes, admiral.

Kirk waits for everyone else to leave the room before speaking.

KIRK

How is he?

UHURA

He just begged you to take command of the ship. How do you think he is?

KIRK

Keep an eye on him for me. Please.

UHURA

I am. I’ll be brushing up on my Gorn and Romulan until we arrive.

KIRK

No. All I want you to do is promise to look after Spock.

UHURA

Admiral, I’m the best translator you have for Gorn and Klingon. Only one aboard who knows any Romulan. You cannot possibly expect me to sit by and just look after Spock. I love him, but he is a grown person, and I need to-.

KIRK

You’re right. I’m not asking you to babysit him. Just be his friend, because I don’t know if I can right now while in command.

UHURA

Jim….

KIRK

Besides, whoever’s out there attacked an unarmed colony, and may have destroyed two of our starships. I don’t think they’re interested in speaking.

Kirk exits the room.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Admiral, everyone is aboard and accounted for.

KIRK

Thank you Mr. Sulu. Patch me in the ship’s comms.

Sulu turns on the comms ship-wide and signals they’re live.

KIRK

Attention Enterprise crew. This is Admiral Kirk. I apologize for calling everyone away from a time of mourning. A Federation colony has been attacked by an unknown enemy. The Enterprise is the closest ship in range and we’re being sent to investigate. As the ranking officer, I will be assuming command for this mission. All schedules and personnel duties will continue as normal. We don’t know what’s out there waiting for us, and I need everyone to be at their best. There are innocent people at that colony in need of our help, and we’re going to give it. Kirk out.

Camera cuts and pans around the bridge to show the reactions of crew members. Cuts the same to other sections of the ship.

KIRK

Mr. Sulu, take us to warp.

SULU

Yes, Admiral.

The ships goes to warp and leaves New Vulcan.

INT - ENTERPRISE MEDICAL BAY

Camera show people walking around, and then closes on McCoy getting emergency beds assembled. Spock enters to speak with him.

SPOCK

Doctor, a moment.

MCCOY

Sure thing Spock. What do you need?

SPOCK

Is there anything you require for preparation?

MCCOY

No, we’re fine here. How are you holding out?

SPOCK

I am in good medical health. There is no need for concern.

MCCOY

Good physical health, maybe. I mean how are you doing emotionally.

SPOCK

I do not understand your questioning.

MCCOY

It doesn’t matter that you’re not going to grow old and become like that other you. You still saw a version of you die. No one would be fine after that. If I saw an old version of me die who married a Vulcan and had a mullet, I would be weirded out.

SPOCK

What is a mullet?

MCCOY

It’s one thing I’m glad Vulcans don’t know about, so let’s keep it that way. But dammit Spock, doesn’t it bother you that we buried a man with your face?

SPOCK

I do not know how to feel about it. Mr. Spock and I were not the same person. Yet we were more alike that many would care to admit. I find myself feeling regret on his behalf.

MCCOY

Regret over what?

SPOCK

His loneliness. He died without family. Without loved ones. He died alone.

MCCOY

Spock, if anyone doesn’t have to worry about dying alone, it’s you. You have Uhura. You have Jim. Hell, even I’d go to your funeral. You’re not alone here.

SPOCK

Thank you doctor. I would welcome your attendance should you outlive me. [break for silence] If you discover a need for additional supplies please inform me.

MCCOY

Right….

Spock exits the medical bay and cuts to McCoy showing concern.

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

KIRK

Scotty. How are the engines?

SCOTTY

Engines are fine, admiral. Holding stronger than ever. The new warp drive has been a thing of beauty. Almost frightening how silent she runs.

Sound of Keenser knocking on some piping from overhead.

SCOTTY

So quiet Keenser feels the need to make racket all day long to irritate me.

KIRK

And weapons?

SCOTTY

Teams are loading up the last few torpedoes. I cannot believe you needed them all ready. You expecting a fight?

KIRK

I don’t know what I’m expecting, and that’s the problem.

CHEKOV

Admiral Kirk, come in.

KIRK

Kirk here bridge.

CHEKOV

Admiral, we’re approaching Autumn.

KIRK

Alright, I’m on my way. Scotty, get those torpedoes loaded.

Pans to have Kirk walking away as Scotty returns to his post.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Cuts to Kirk entering the bridge.

KIRK

Mr. Sulu, how close are we?

SULU

Dropping out of warp now sir.

The ship drops out of warp and shows Autumn on screen.

KIRK

Magnify on the settlement.

View screen changes to above the town, showing the destruction left behind.

KIRK

We’re too late….

Wide show, panning and cutting to show the bridge crew reacting.

KIRK

Are there any life signs?

SULU

We’ll need to come in closer to scan.

KIRK

Bring us in closer Mr. Sulu. And begin scanning for life signs.

SULU

Yes, Admiral.

INT - ENTERPRISE MEDICAL BAY

Cut to med bay and show McCoy watching on a smaller monitor.

MCCOY

Oh my god….

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

Another cut, this time to engineering for Scotty and the crew to observe on a screen.

SCOTTY

Take a good hard look lads. We’re going to get the bastards that did that.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KIRK

Send a transmission to Starfleet. Let them know we arrived and they need to send medical teams immediately.

UHURA

We can’t Admiral.

KIRK

Why not?

UHURA

Signals are not going through. We’re being jammed somehow.

KIRK

What?

Wide shot as the ship shakes and couple of consoles burst.

SULU

Admiral, we’re under attack!

KIRK

Raise shields and return fire!

EXT - AUTUMN ORBIT

A Romulan Warbird is firing at the ship. Another decloaks and begins firing as well. The Enterprise returns fire at both vessels. Both warbirds switch between cloaking as they pass over the Enterprise and then decloak to come around for another shot.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KIRK

Why are we not firing torpedoes?

SPOCK

Their first attack took out our forward facing torpedo tubes.

KIRK

And the rear?

SULU

The warbirds keep cloaking as they’re about to pass us. We can’t lock on for torpedoes with their speed and maneuverability.

SPOCK

Our shields are are 76%.

KIRK

Direct all fire on one section of their ships. We need to focus on one section and track it as they decloak. Mr. Sulu, head for Autumn’s twin moons and get us between them. They may not be able to maneuver in that small gap.

SULU

Aye sir.

EXT - AUTUMN ORBIT

The Enterprise heads for the moons while the Warbirds continue their patterned attack. They focus fire on single sections of the enemy ships, going at each one at a time when they take turns passing over.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KIRK

Do we know how their shields are holding?

CHEKOV

Their shield modulation is different from anything we know. I cannot detect what damage we have done.

SPOCK

Admiral, the warbirds have changed patterns to flank us. Both are using the moons’ gravity to come around at us together.

KIRK

Dammit. We put ourselves in a bottleneck right for them.

SULU

Another vessel is dropping out of warp.

KIRK

Is it Romulan?

SULU

No sir. It’s the Umbrage.

EXT - AUTUMN ORBIT

U.S.S. Umbrage drops out of warp and begins firing phasers at the Romulan ships.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KIRK

Can we hail them?

UHURA

Negative. The Romulans are jamming short-range communications.

SULU

Admiral, the Umbrage is turning around.

KIRK

What?!

EXT - AUTUMN ORBIT

Umbrage turns and goes to warp.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KIRK

Are you kidding me?!

SPOCK

Shields are at 42%.

KIRK

That’s not the answer I was looking for Spock. Try turning us about and firing rear torpedoes.

SPOCK

Admiral, if I can’t get a lock on the ships it is possible the torpedo will strike the planet surface.

SULU

Wait, the Umbrage is coming back.

EXT - AUTUMN ORBIT

The Umbrage exits from warp right in front of the Enterprise and above it, just as the Warbirds are making a pass and cloaking. Forward shields on the Umbrage collide with the Warbirds, causing damage and preventing them from completing their cloak.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

One of the Warbirds is caught in the gravity and falling in.

KIRK

And the other?

SULU

Its shields are down. Weapon systems are still functional.

KIRK

Mr. Spock.

SPOCK

Firing admiral.

EXT - AUTUMN ORBIT

Enterprise fires several rear torpedoes, destroying the warbird. The Umbrage is adrift.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KIRK

Uhura, do we have comms again?

UHURA

Yes admiral, we are back.

KIRK

Hail the Umbrage.

View screen switches to display the bridge of the Umbrage.

??? (TOM HARDY)

I see we arrived right in time Enterprise.

KIRK

You certainly did Captain. One hell of a move you pulled back there.

???

It ended up leaving us adrift the way it buckled our hull. Glad it did the job. And it’s just Commander, sir. Commander Picard.

KIRK

Picard, it was worth it.

INT - ROMULAN WARBIRD

ROMULAN ENSIGN

Commander Sorak, we are no longer receiving transmissions from the other vessels we left around Autumn.

SORAK

Fools underestimated the Federation.

ROMULAN ENSIGN

Should we return and attack?

SORAK

No. Let the Federation waste time trying to figure out what happened. They will contact Romulus, and Romulus will issue an apology, providing time for us to plan the next phase.

ROMULAN COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Commander, we are receiving a transmission from High Command.

SORAK

It was only a matter of time. On screen.

Screen displays the High Command chambers.

PRAETOR HAREED

Commander Sorak. It has come to our attention attacks have been engaged against the Federation. They took place not long after you left Romulan space.

SORAK

I attacked them.

PRAETOR HAREED

You were issued no orders to-

SORAK

I do not require your orders Praetor. It is my prerogative to do what is necessary to protect the Romulan Empire.

PRAETOR

Then you will present your evidence to why this was necessary. Return to Romulus at once.

The screen cuts off the transmission.

ROMULAN COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

High Command has ended the transmission.

SORAK

Yes, so I gathered.

ROMULAN ENSIGN

Commander?

SORAK

Return to Romulus. Our target has been dealt with.

ROMULAN ENSIGN

Aye sir.

SORAK

Those fools have no idea what we have done for Romulus. Send word to our forces. Our hour is coming.

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

KIRK

Scotty, how are we looking?

SCOTTY

Only at our backside thanks to you.

KIRK

We detected no ships in the area. It looked like the battle was long over.

SCOTTY

Oh yes. We’re surrounded by Gorn, Klingon, Romulan, and two out of three have cloaked ships. They made you an Admiral and you became a bloody idiot.

KIRK

Scotty.

SCOTTY

Aye.

KIRK

Torpedoes. Can you get us firing forward?

SCOTTY

Not out of space dock. They hit us hard when they blindsided us. We cannot make the repairs on our own.

KIRK

Well you need to find an alternative. Every other ship is hours away and we still need to investigate the others missing.

SCOTTY

Jim, I-

KIRK

Scotty, do what you can. And get those shields ready for more.

SCOTTY

Aye, Admiral.

As Kirk is climbing out of Engineering, Spock meets with him, Picard in tow.

SPOCK

Admiral, if you have a moment.

KIRK

I do have a moment, Spock. What do we got?

SPOCK

Admiral Kirk, Commander Picard.

KIRK

Picard, yes. That was some crazy flying you did out there. And sorry, what’s your first name?

PICARD

It’s David, and thank you sir.

KIRK

David, great. Are you and the rest of the crew alright? Any injuries?

PICARD

Only minor. Your doctor is helping to patch them up.

KIRK

Excellent. Look I’d love to stay and chat more but right now really I need to make sure the ship is ready to get back underway soon as the Umbrage crew is tended to and down on the surface.

PICARD

Yes, I know sir. I actually need to talk to you about that.

KIRK

I’m sorry. I know it’s sudden to have to leave you on the surface and get the recovery effort started. Uhura heard back from Starfleet, and ships are only a few hours away.

PICARD

I’d like to come aboard as a security officer sir.

KIRK

What? Commander I don’t have time to brush your crew up on the way Enterprise does business.

PICARD

Not the whole crew sir. Just me.

KIRK

Commander, it wouldn’t look good to leave your entire crew on the planet and-

PICARD

Admiral, I apologize, but they are not my crew.

KIRK

What do you mean?

SPOCK

Admiral. As Commander Picard has been trying to explain, he is not a member of the Umbrage crew. He was a colonist of Autumn.

KIRK

Oh. Picard, I, I’m so sorry. Why were you aboard the Umbrage?

PICARD

It’s fine sir. Captain O’Hare and his crew were visiting on shore leave. I am... I was, chief of security for the settlement. The Umbrage flight crew and security teams asked me to take them out on maneuvers. We were on our way back when we picked up the distress signal.

KIRK

Picard. I cannot imagine what you are going through right now, but you shouldn’t be going where we’re headed.

SPOCK

I respectfully must disagree Admiral.

KIRK

Spock?

SPOCK

There is a high probability we will find ourselves in battle again with Romulan forces, and the Enterprise does not have an active chief of security.

PICARD

Admiral, please. My whole family died down there. I can’t be on that surface right now.

KIRK

Commander, a security officer’s duty is to protect the crew. I don’t need someone craving revenge.

PICARD

I don’t need revenge, sir. I need a distraction.

Kirk and Spock exchange a look.

KIRK

Congratulations, Commander. You’re the Enterprise’s first security officer since….

SPOCK

Since Captain Pike first took command.

KIRK

Meeting in the astrometrics lab in thirty.

Kirk leaves and walks away. Picard reaches out to shake Spock’s hand.

PICARD

Thank you Captain. I won’t let you down.

SPOCK

Welcome aboard Commander.

INT - ENTERPRISE CAPTAIN’S READY ROOM

Lights are low and a star chart is on the display.

UHURA

Here is the last known transmission of the Aldridge, and here is the Zephyr. Starfleet still hasn’t heard from them, and there have been no responses to any wide-band signals.

The lights come back on. Wide shot of everyone in the ready room.

KIRK

Mr. Sulu, how fast can you get us to either ship?

SULU

There was only minor damage to the warp nacelles. We can still achieve maximum warp.

KIRK

What about the Umbrage crew, Bones?

MCCOY

They’re all patched up and on the surface. We left them supplies and equipment to get started on rescue efforts.

KIRK

That’s good news. Chekov, during the battle you mentioned some modulation in the Romulan shields we didn’t recognize. Were you able to learn anything from them?

CHEKOV

No, Admiral. I believe with more time I can find something.

KIRK

We’re short on time. Do what you can. For now we’ll set course for the Aldridge’s last location.

PICARD

Excuse me, sir, but what about the other vessel?

KIRK

Other vessel?

SPOCK

There are no other Federation vessels in this area of space.

PICARD

When we took the Umbrage out for the maneuvering we passed by another Federation ship. They were curt when we hailed them, but it was one of ours.

KIRK

Can you remember the ship’s heading?

PICARD

Yes sir.

KIRK

Alright, Picard get with Sulu and set a course. Uhura, widen your search for transmissions around that area. If there is some other mysterious Federation ship out here it may have an idea what’s going on. Dismissed.

Everyone heads out of the room except for Spock.

SPOCK

Admiral, wouldn’t it be prudent to investigate our missing ships first?

KIRK

Spock, something is weird about all this. The Romulans stayed behind to attack the first ship that comes by. Now we have an unknown Federation ship out here. I want answers, and my gut tells me this other ship is our best shot.

SPOCK

Let’s go hunting.

Kirk and Spock exit.

EXT - ENTERPRISE OUTSIDE

The ship turns away from the planet and goes to warp.

INT - ROMULAN COUNCIL CHAMBERS

Sorak enters the chambers and walks down its hall to the council members.

SORAK

I was summoned….

PRAETOR HAREED

Do you find this amusing, Commander? Your actions may very well ignite a war with the Federation. A war the empire does not want, nor is ready for. If the Federation-

SORAK

The Federation will do nothing. They will talk, and then you will talk. And then the rest of the galaxy will grow tired and bored as you both talk more.

ROMULAN COUNCILOR

Commander Sorak!

SORAK

The Federation is weak. It’s been week since it began. Each year they expand further into the Beta Quadrant and this council does nothing while our weak enemy comes within a few light-years of our space.

PRAETOR HAREED

There has been no aggression from the Federation.

SORAK

None that you know of. We have been keeping watch in your laziness. The Federation has been building weapons to strengthen their forces. All the while we remain stagnate. It was not so long ago that this council was planning a war with the Federation. Look at you know.

PRAETOR HAREED

It was determined a war with the Federation would yield no outcome benefitting the Empire.

SORAK

Determined…. You mean you grew fearful of a time-traveling Vulcan, and a Federation child who managed to defeat a group of time-traveling Romulans. Worse, you then took pity on the Vulcans for losing their planet. It was the best time to strike, and you failed us all.

PRAETOR HAREED

We have heard quite eno-

SORAK

No. It is the Empire who has heard enough.

Romulan troops enter the chambers. They detain the councilors and begin taking them away.

SORAK

While the Federation mourns the loss of its only source of the future, I have organized our forces under your council’s name, and they are preparing for what should have been done years ago. You will live long enough to witness your failure.

EXT - ENTERPRISE OUTSIDE

The ship is traveling at warp.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

UHURA

Admiral, I’m detecting some sort of distortion not too far ahead. It’s not a transmission, but it is interfering with the band.

KIRK

Mr. Sulu?

SULU

There is something up ahead admiral. Dropping us out of warp now.

EXT - ENTERPRISE OUTSIDE

The ship exits warp in front of another vessel. It resembles a Federation starship, but part of it is gone, completely disappeared. Otherwise appears intact.

KIRK

What is that? Mr. Picard, is that the ship you saw earlier?

PICARD

Yes. What’s left of it anyway.

KIRK

Uhura, hail them.

UHURA

I’m not detecting anything Admiral. No return readings.

KIRK

Spock?

SULU

We are not reading any life signs aboard Admiral. Shields and other systems are offline.

CHEKOV

Admiral, I am reading unusual fluctuations from the vessel. They are similar to those I detected earlier from the Romulan ships.

KIRK

Is it coming from the bridge?

CHEKOV

I do not know, sir.

SPOCK

The ship’s interior design is unusual. There is no traditional forward bridge.

KIRK

I need to get on that ship.

SPOCK

I would advise against that Admiral. Per Starfleet regulations-

KIRK

Last I heard, that’s one of our Starships. No regulation against an Admiral boarding now, right?

SPOCK

Admiral-

KIRK

Relax Spock. You can come aboard too since you’re so worried. Picard, you get your first away mission as chief of security. Sulu, have Bones and Mr. Scott meet us at Transporter Room 2.

Kirk gets up from his chair and walks toward the shuttle.

KIRK

Sulu, you have the bridge. And soon as we transport over raise the shields.

SULU

Yes sir, Admiral.

INT - U.S.S. CATERWAUL

The team transports over wearing spacesuits.

MCCOY

Remind me again why I’m here when there were no life signs detected?

KIRK

We couldn’t detect anything on this ship Bones. For all we know it’s able to hide people alive somewhere.

MCCOY

Right….

SPOCK

Admiral, we should exercise caution.

KIRK

I know. Security chief, your show.

PICARD

I think you’re enjoying this far too much Admiral. Frakes, you and Dorn look after the Admiral and Mr. Spock as they try and locate the bridge. Spiner, accompany Mr. Scott to engineering. I’ll accompany the doctor and secure the area as we go.

The security team acknowledges the orders and they split up.

Kirk and Spock head to where they assume the bridge might be. The two security officers stay ahead to look out for anything.

SPOCK

Admiral, I have not had an opportunity to thank you.

KIRK?

For what, Spock?

SPOCK

For speaking at Mr. Spock’s funeral on my behalf. I was ill-suited for the task under the circumstances.

KIRK

You don’t need to thank me. It was the least I could do. So how are you holding it together?

SPOCK

I was not aware of anything required I hold together.

KIRK

Come on Spock. You think after all this time I can’t tell when you’re deflecting?

SPOCK

I appreciate your concern, but I do not know how to have a discussion about what I’m feeling.

KIRK

Well, you are talking to someone who literally died right in front of you, and then came back to life. Way I see it, there may be no one better in the whole galaxy to talk to. Unless you tried talking to Uhura.

SPOCK

I have not spoken with her of this…. I am, afraid.

KIRK

Look, I know Uhura can be scary at times, but she’s going to be here for you no matter what.

SPOCK

It is not that I believe she won’t stay with me. The concern is another matter entirely. I...

KIRK

Damn it Spock, come on and let it out already. What are you waiting for?

SPOCK

I’m afraid to lose her.

Silence between the two men as they stop and stare at each other.

SPOCK

Jim, I do not want to die as Mr. Spock did. After Vulcan was destroyed I did not consider the possibility I could feel a greater loss. Yet I did not realize until now how painful it would be to lose her.

KIRK

Spock, you’re not going to lose her.

SPOCK

We do not know that. Yesterday, if we had met Commander Picard and he had asked me the probability of him losing his family, I would have provided a number you would deem as ‘no chance at all.’ Now here we are today.

KIRK

One word of advice. In your worry about all the what-ifs that could lead to losing her, don’t get so wrapped up in it that she ends up losing you.

SPOCK

That is, rather insightful Jim. Thank you.

KIRK

I can be full of surprises. You should know by now I’m great at understanding women.

SPOCK

Is that why you have not returned any messages to Carol Marcus?

KIRK

What? How do you know Carol’s been trying to contact me?

SPOCK

I am in a relationship with our communications officer.

KIRK

Are you serious? Uhura told you about messages I’m receiving?

SPOCK

Only that they were sent. We would never listen to your private correspondence.

UHURA

You have some waiting by the way. Two, since we left New Vulcan. I didn’t tell you because you only said to inform you of messages from Starfleet.

KIRK

Uhura….have you been listening the entire time?

UHURA

Yes.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Close up shot on Uhura before cutting to a wide shot of the entire bridge grinning or seeming uneasy.

UHURA

And so has the entire bridge.

INT - CATERWAUL HALLWAY

Cut back to Kirk and Spock who stare at each other silently.

UHURA

I do operate our comms.

KIRK

Seriously? Why is it I always get in trouble when we discuss your relationship?

SPOCK

I apologize Admiral.

KIRK

I mean why can’t we discuss one of my relationships and you be the one in trouble for a change?

UHURA

Oh and by the way….

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Cut to close-up shot of Uhura.

UHURA

You’re both the dumbest Captains in all of Starfleet.

INT - CATERWAUL HALLWAY

Cut back to Kirk and Spock again.

KIRK

Well actually, I’m an-

SPOCK

I wouldn’t Admiral.

KIRK

Yeah, that’s a bad idea. Let’s just find the bridge. Scotty, are you having any luck?

INT - CATERWAUL ENGINE ROOM

Cuts to Scotty inspecting the engine room. Kirk remains on comms to talk with him.

SCOTTY

I suppose that depends on what sort of luck you’re expecting.

KIRK

What do you mean?

SCOTTY

We found engineering. At least I think we found engineering. Looks like a warp drive; just not any warp drive I’ve ever seen. And there’s some unusual machine down here too.

KIRK

Is it part of the warp drive?

SCOTTY

No, I don’t think so. Funnels through the warp drive, but it’s running through a bunch of other systems. I’d have to get a team down here to inspect it more closely.

KIRK

Do what you can for now. If we have time we-

MCCOY

ARRRGGGHHHH!

KIRK

BONES?!

MCCOY

[heavy breathing]

Cuts to Kirk and Spock running to Bones’ location.

KIRK

Picard, do you have Bones?

PICARD

He’s fine Admiral. Startled by something we found.

KIRK

What is it?

PICARD

I’m not exactly sure, sir. The doctor’s a bit shaken up by it.

INT - CATERWAUL HANGAR

Cuts to Picard kneeling down by Bones who is on the ground.

PICARD

You better get down here sir.

Wide shot of the hangar, showing several tubes laid out.

PICARD

I have no idea what this is.

KIRK

Almost there. Sit tight Bones.

MCCOY

Yeah, no problem.

PICARD

Doctor, it might be best if you could refrain from screaming out like that unless you’re in danger.

MCCOY

Yeah, sure thing. I’ll keep it in mind next time I see that.

Feet pass by and then cuts up to show Kirk and Spock entering.

KIRK

Next time you see what?

MCCOY

That.

Bones points over to the nearest tube. Kirk walks over to it and looks inside the glass.

KIRK

It can’t be.

SPOCK

Admiral?

KIRK

Spock…. It’s Khan….

Cutting shots showing everyone silent.

UHURA

Admiral, can you repeat that?

INT - CATERWAUL ENGINEERING

Shot cuts to Scotty who is still in engineering.

SCOTTY

Oh you have got to be kidding me.

UHURA

Admiral.

INT - CATERWAUL HANGAR

Back at Kirk in the hangar.

KIRK

It’s Khan, Uhura. The other tubes must be his people.

PICARD

Would someone mind telling me who Khan is?

MCCOY

A genetically engineered narcissist from a time of war, with a pension for megalomania.

SPOCK

Admiral, why would Khan be aboard this vessel? Shouldn’t he be back on Earth?

MCCOY

Now that is a great question. Jim, what in heaven’s name is he doing here? What are they all doing here?

KIRK

I don’t know. After the incident with Admiral Marcus, Section 31 was supposed to have been shut down.

SPOCK

It would appear we were told incorrectly.

KIRK

If Khan’s here, then this ship must be Section 31. It would explain why they were dismissive when the Umbrage passed them before. Need to keep Section 31 a secret.

MCCOY

Romulans, and now Section 31. What the hell is going on?

KIRK

Good question…. Let’s ask him.

Silence for a moment among them as they process what was just said.

MCCOY

Are you out of your damned mind? You did not just suggest what I think you’re suggesting.

KIRK

Bones.

MCCOY

You actually want to wake up the madman who tried to crash a whole starship into Starfleet?

KIRK

Bones.

MCCOY

For goodness sakes the man nearly destroyed the Enterprise. Certainly gave the old inhumane effort.

KIRK

Bones!

SPOCK

Admiral, I must agree with the doctor. Khan is a known threat to the safety of not only the crew, but the entire galaxy. We should-

KIRK

I’ve already decided Spock. There’s no one here, except Khan. He worked with Section 31 before, so he has to know something, or at least be able to point us in the right direction. Any more objections?

Wider shot to show everyone silent, and Picard gesturing he sees no point in arguing.

SPOCK

It is unlikely that Khan will cooperate with us willingly.

KIRK

It’s alright…. I have an idea.

Camera cuts to a close-up of Khan’s face through the glass. Slowly moves in on his face and then the scenery transitions to him laying out a bed in the med bay.

INT - ENTERPRISE MEDICAL BAY

Khan begins to wake up and realizes he is shackled to the recovery bed.

KHAN (BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH)

Where am I?

MCCOY

Good morning. You know, for a superior human who had been sleeping quite a while already, you certainly took your time waking up.

KHAN

Doctor. Pleasure to see you again.

MCCOY

Feeling’s mutual.

KHAN

What is happening? Why have I been wakened from the pod?

MCCOY

Admiral’s on his way. He can explain once he gets here.

KHAN

I demand to know why I have been-

Scene shows Kirk enter the room with Spock and Picard.

KHAN

Kirk….

KIRK

Bones, how’s our patient?

MCCOY

Charming as ever. Seems plenty talkative too.

KIRK

Great, so let’s get right to it. Khan, you’re awake because right now we need answers, and you are the only person we have access to.

KHAN

I see. How wonderful for me.

KIRK

We recently had a bad run-in with the Romulans after they destroyed a Federation settlement. Then we come across a starship that seems to be Section 31. Now that’s crazy, because after what happened with you last time, Section 31 was closed. So you should be miles below Earth’s surface. What are you doing here?

KHAN

I was sleeping the entire time, just as you found me. Even if I had been awake, you really think I would help you after you killed my people? I’ll never forgive you all for their deaths.

KIRK

First of all, I don’t buy for a second you don’t know anything considering how deep in Section 31 you were. Second, your people aren’t dead, so you can keep the shark teeth away. I’m hoping to appeal to your humanity, Khan.

KHAN

What do you mean they are alive?

KIRK

Spock.

Spock hands over a screen to Khan. It displays a camera showing his people still frozen, in a new facility.

KIRK

See? Still frozen solid. Spock tricked you before. Worked pretty well too as I recall.

KHAN

Where are they?

KIRK

Let’s discuss where they can be.

Kirk reaches over to take the display. He changes its presentation to a planet and hands it back to Khan.

KIRK

That right there is Ceti Alpha V. Nice, clean planet, recently discovered by the Federation. No plans to colonize, but it’s perfectly habitable. Humanity needs you, and whether you like it or not, you’re still human. You help us, and when it’s all over, I drop you off along with the rest of your people.

KHAN

You make it sound so simple Captain. Why should I believe you?

KIRK

It’s Admiral, actually. And as an Admiral, I can guarantee this will happen.

SPOCK

We will also deploy satellites cautioning passing starships of the planet.

KIRK

Spock.

KHAN

Come now, Admiral, I would have expected as such. And who are you?

PICARD

Chief of security, Commander David Picard.

KHAN

Your accent; a bald Frenchman. I see you’ve made your crew more quaint since becoming an Admiral.

KIRK

It’s a simple deal Khan. You help us figure out what’s going on, potentially keeping more lives from being lost, and we give you and your people back their lives.

KHAN

You have a deal, Admiral. Shall we shake on it?

Both shake hands.

KHAN

You don’t want to betray me Kirk. Alive or not, you still put me to sleep believing my people were gone.

KIRK

Please, you stopped being threatening after you got your ass kicked by a Vulcan. Bones, finish your check-up. Once he’s good to go, have security escort him to the ready room. In the meantime Khan, that pad contains everything we know so far. Make sure to look it over before meeting up.

Kirk leaves with Spock and Picard. Bones is chuckling quietly to himself.

KHAN

Something amusing doctor?

MCCOY

You have no idea how many cameras there are on Earth. Enough angles caught Spock beating the hell out of you, we were able to make a short movie out of it. I can pull it up if you like?

INT - ENTERPRISE HALLWAY

PICARD

Admiral, are you sure this is such a good idea? I’ve only just met the man, but he obviously isn’t on the same side as us.

KIRK

I know. He’s on his own side. For now, his side is parallel with ours. So long as we keep it that way we’ll be fine.

PICARD

In that case, I request we transport his crew off the ship. He may attempt to free them and takeover.

KIRK

Already taken care of. I had Scotty transport them to the surface of Ceti Alpha V. If Khan asks, we just don’t tell him.

SPOCK

I am curious where you made the discovery of this planet?

KIRK

A few months back another starship discovered it. Since it was out of the way for us, I was already petitioning to have it made into a home for Khan’s people. It never sat well with me putting him back under.

SPOCK

And the admiralty board turned down your petition?

KIRK

They did.

SPOCK

Are you not worried about their response when they learn of you resettling them?

KIRK

The way I see it, they didn’t tell me about Section 31. Admiral’s prerogative.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Chekov, you alright over there?

CHEKOV

I am still trying to find what wavelength the modulation we detected operates at. It’s hitting different types of bands at all once.

SULU

Hey Uhura, you have moment?

UHURA

Sure, what have we got?

CHEKOV

I cannot make sense of these waves. They’re bouncing in and out of different bands but it doesn’t make any sense. There is no steady pattern anywhere.

UHURA

Well…. Here let me take a look. [break as Uhura look through the screen] Notice how certain segments appear multiple times?

CHEKOV

Yes, but they are not always with the same other patterns.

UHURA

I think it’s because there is a special code to how the waves move from one band to another. It’s like a language, where the waves operate like sentences. These are all words of sorts.

SULU

So it’s a language?

UHURA

Not exactly, but similar. Chekov, you mentioned there was a similar modulation abnormality from the Federation ship right?

CHEKOV

Yes, here. [break to display both] We see here both going in different ways.

UHURA

It’s…. that’s it.

SULU

What?

UHURA

The Federation one does have a pattern. It’s just based off one of our more protected encryption algorithms. I recognize it because I know the cipher. See?

Uhura enters on the screen, and unlocks the pattern for the Federation modulation.

CHEKOV

Oh my….

SULU

Is that?

UHURA

Yes it is.

INT - ENTERPRISE CAPTAIN’S READY ROOM

Cuts into the ready room with the senior staff assembled.

KIRK

What is it?

UHURA

A cloak. The Federation, or rather Section 31; they were developing cloaking technology. And they had it working to an extent.

KIRK

What extent exactly?

UHURA

When they tried to generate a cloaking field, it wouldn’t remain stable across the entire ship. Our ships designs keep certain systems separate for security reasons. So they tried to channel it through the warp drive and use the warp field as a cloak.

SCOTTY

So that’s why I saw it funneled into there back in their engineering. But why did I see it integrated with other systems?

UHURA

From what we can tell, their frequency was on a different band than the warp field. They tried to compensate by radiating the cloak between the warp and their shields.

PICARD

There was some minor battle damage around the ship. It’s possible the Romulans found them and got into a fight.

KHAN

And that’s when their shields failed.

Wide shot to show everyone reacting to Khan entering the room.

KHAN

This particular ship was designed to have compartmentalized shields. When sections failed, it could no longer stabilize the field generated by the cloak, and it collapsed. Effectively vaporized those sections of the ship. The battle was over with little effort from their attacker.

KIRK

If that’s true, then why didn’t the Romulans try and board the ship after?

KHAN

The Tal Shiar are familiar with Section 31. No doubt they feared the ship would have traps and chose to let it die adrift.

Wide shot of confusion among the crew.

KIRK

Tal Shiar?

SPOCK

Death of my enemies?

KHAN

Indeed Mr. Spock. You earn the high marks for the day.

KIRK

What is the Tal Shiar?

KHAN

They are a secret organization within the Romulan Empire. Their sole purpose is to keep Romulus safe from all enemies, present or potential.

MCCOY

So the Romulan version of Section 31?

KHAN

In a crude manner of speaking, yes, they do perform similar functions.

KIRK

How do you know it’s the Tal Shiar? How are you even aware of the Tal Shiar?

KHAN

Secret organizations always know their enemies. They knew of Section 31 just as it knew of them. As for this incident, I inspected the data you gathered on the ships encountered at Autumn. From their wreckage I noticed unique engine systems only the Tal Shiar have access to. It allows them a wider range of evasive capability than the typical Warbird.

SULU

Explains why they were able to make use of the moons’ gravity they way they did.

SPOCK

If these Tal Shiar are behind the attack then we must notify the Romulan High Command immediately.

KHAN

In all likelihood Mr. Spock, you are too late for that. From what I overheard of Ms. Uhura’s presentation, the Federation was developing cloaking technology. No doubt the Tal Shiar learned of this, and attacked in response.

KIRK

If the cloaking technology is all they were after, why would it be too late to contact the Romulan government?

KHAN

Before the Federation’s aggressive expansion that found me, the Romulans had been considering war. They backed away from those plans, and we mutually ignored one another. The Tal Shiar have never felt the same way. Now they have an excuse to strike. In their mind, if they do not strike now, the Federation will have cloaking technology and be unstoppable. Wouldn’t that be logical, Mr. Spock?

SPOCK

Logically, if they consider the Federation a threat that will only grow stronger and match their technology; now would be the appropriate time to plan an attack. The defeat of the Caterwaul could be seen as a defeat of Section 31, leaving the Federation vulnerable.

SCOTTY

Well now that we’ve all figured that out, what do we do?

Silence as Kirk stares at each crew member to gauge their opinions and expressions.

KIRK

Where are the Tal Shiar?

SPOCK

Admiral, a word.

KIRK

Not now Spock. You know where the Tal Shiar are, don’t you?

KHAN

Romulus, according what data I was able to decrypt from the Caterwaul.

MCCOY

Of course they’re on Romulus. Jim, tell me we’re not going. What will it accomplish besides getting us all killed?

CHEKOV

The cipher.

SPOCK

Cipher?

CHEKOV

Uhura, you said if we have the cipher for the Romulan modulation, we could possibly unlock it, yes?

UHURA

Yeah….

CHEKOV

If we have the cipher, we may be able to detect Romulan cloaking.

PICARD

And they won’t see us coming. You said they want to go to war. Which means they’re busy positioning their forces across the quadrant.

SULU

We are technically in Romulan territory right now.

UHURA

Would they have killed the Romulan council?

KHAN

Unlikely. Romulans are far too arrogant. The council will be kept alive long enough to witness the defeat of the Federation.

UHURA

If we can free them, they’ll be able to stop any Romulan forces already positioned.

SPOCK

If we do this Admiral, we must do it now.

KIRK

What is the Tal Shiar’s command structure? Should we expect to fight an army?

KHAN

The last leader I was aware of is a Commander Sorak. He believes in grinding enemies down until there is nothing left rather than learn about them. Only reports I ever read were that he enjoyed hunting wild game for the challenge. Beyond that, the Tal Shiar operate with a single leader, who must be unanimously voted in by the various sects. If we attack there will be resistance, but the Tal Shiar are kept small to maintain control. It’s likely they have sent other Romulan forces out to prepare for war under a guise as the council, while the few remaining on Romulus are loyal.

KIRK

Alright. Let’s go save Romulus. Dismissed.

Everyone stands to leave the room.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

The crew enters the bridge. Some leave to attend to their stations.

KIRK

Uhura, open a channel ship-wide. [break and cut for Uhura to signal] Attention crew, this is Admiral Kirk. I’m letting all of you know that our next destination is the planet Romulus.

Cuts to various parts of the ship, showing the crew listening.

KIRK

We have reason to believe the Romulan Empire is under attack from within by a force which means to destroy the Federation. The Enterprise is the only starship capable of fighting in the entire quadrant, so it’s up to us. If we fail, by this time tomorrow the entire Federation will be at war with the Romulans. Under no circumstances can we allow this to happen. In the past I’ve asked a lot of this ship and crew. Today I’m asking for more. Aboard this ship is the best crew in Federation history, a crew that has represented every hope and dream it’s ever wished. Now we’re going to prove it. Kirk out.

Cut to Uhura ending the transmission.

KIRK

Uhura, send a transmission to Starfleet letting them know what we’re planning. Warn them there is a chance the Romulans may be planning an attack soon. Mr. Sulu, get us underway.

SULU

Yes sir.

EXT - ENTERPRISE OUTSIDE

Shows the Enterprise turn away from the Caterwaul and go to warp.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

Panned shot showing Sorak at a console. Several council members are on a nearby platform locked down.

ROMULAN SOLDIER

Commander Sorak, we have received a transmission from the Federation.

SORAK

What does the Federation say?

ROMULAN SOLDIER

They report one of their settlements was attacked by Romulan terrorists and the same terrorists may be planning to attack the Empire.

SORAK

Ha ha, what did I tell you Hareed? As expected, the Federation talks. They have realized by now their own pale attempt of a Tal Shiar has fallen. Of course, they don’t believe the Empire’s leaders are smart enough to know of it. Now they want to talk while recuperating.

PRAETOR HAREED

You underestimate the Federation far too much.

SORAK

Therein lies the difference between us. You say I underestimate them. I say you give them too much credit. If I underestimated them, I would not have learned of their attempts at cloaking technology. I would not have crushed it in its infancy. No Hareed, I know full well what they are capable of. I merely stop it before it festers into more.

Wide shots show and array being moved and targeting the sky.

PRAETOR HAREED

What is that?

SORAK

The end of the Federation.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Shows Khan working on a panel covering Uhura’s station with she and Spock looking on. Bones is checking his pad.

UHURA

Is it necessary for you to have the entire panel open like this?

KHAN

I am working on improving the communications on the ship so they will not be jammed by the Romulans as you all previously experienced. The system it not merely tied to your single station Ms. Uhura.

MCCOY

And how do we know you’re not going to try and sabotage it?

KHAN

The Admiral and I have an agreement. Unlike our previous encounter, it’s an agreement I can adhere to. Why are you even here doctor?

MCCOY

When we get to Romulus, you’re going to be part of the landing party. I only cleared you before to make sure you could walk around the ship. Now I’m making sure you can go into a fight.

KHAN

I assure you doctor I am more than capable.

SPOCK

What precisely are you doing to the system?

KHAN

I am bypassing the main communications array, and forcing it to instead modulate bands through subspace. It will cover a greater distance, and bounce through the Romulan jamming since it can only cover one band at a time. In layman’s terms Mr. Spock, I am making it better.

MCCOY

Better. Spock where have I heard that before?

SPOCK

As I recall, when we first met Khan he claimed to be better than all of us.

MCCOY

Oh that’s right. What was he better at again?

SPOCK

His exact word was, everything.

UHURA

Except he wasn’t so much better at fighting. He lost going up against you Spock, and you’re not even a specially trained warrior.

MCCOY

He wasn’t so good at strategy either. Transporting those torpedoes on board the ship so we could blow them up.

Wide cut to include Sulu in the discussion.

SULU

I remember him not being so great at piloting. Crashed that ship of his into every part of San Francisco except Federation Headquarters.

Close cuts on Uhura and Bones as they try to get Spock to join in on the banter.

SPOCK

He was not better at spatial recognition. When traveling through the debris field with the Admiral he was unable to think three-dimensionally, leading to him being hit by the debris.

Cuts of the other crew members with bewildered looks at Spock’s tease. Ends on Khan as he gets up from working on the floor.

KHAN

Thank you Mr. Spock for that analysis. I will endeavor to correct that mistake in the future.

MCCOY

And here I thought your humor was improving Spock.

KHAN

New implementation is complete. It will function as before and require no changes from how you operate the console. I will be heading down to engineering now to assist Mr. Scott with repairs. Perhaps there will be less banter down below.

Uhura hits the comms for engineering as Khan is walking away.

SCOTTY

If I remember correctly, he also wasn’t better at ship design. I mean his special giant warship was disabled by just me, and I’m one lowly engineer.

Cuts to the crew members holding back chuckles.

KHAN

I hate you all.

Khan exits the bridge and the others laugh.

INT - ENTERPRISE OBSERVATION DECK

Kirk is looking out at space with the warp field. Picard enters to join him.

PICARD

Something the matter captain?

KIRK

Picard. No, it’s fine. Nothing at all. I just felt like seeing the warp field up close for a change. It’s amazing to see space flying right by you.

PICARD

Since coming aboard, I’ve come up here a few times myself just to look out. It doesn’t matter what’s outside. I only want to look at something so I see parts of space that aren’t Autumn. Some would say it’s depressing to be reminded of how small we are, but it puts me at ease knowing there is still all this, despite tragedy.

KIRK

I can’t imagine what you must be going through. Not being able to think of anything but that planet, and the people you saw just yesterday…. I read your file. Your entire family really was down there. It said your wife was-

PICARD

What about you captain? I get the feeling you’re here for more than seeing the warp field. What are you looking out there for, trying to forget?

KIRK

You sure you’re supposed to be a security officer and not a counselor? I didn’t think it was obvious I’m trying to keep something off my mind.

PICARD

I have to know what everyone is thinking, sir. Read everything about them and notice things. How else would I anticipate what they’ll do next?

KIRK

And what am I going to do next?

PICARD

Tell me what you see when you’re not looking out that window.

KIRK

I see Spock. Not Captain Spock. Ambassador Spock.

PICARD

From the alternate reality? We heard on Autumn of his passing. I’m sorry sir.

KIRK

When I first met him, he was surprised I wasn’t already Captain of the Enterprise. Spock said that in his world, my father never died trying to help his crew escape. Instead he raised me, made me appreciate space, and I joined Starfleet because of him. His version of me was inspired to become an officer and make a difference.

PICARD

Why does that bother you?

KIRK

It’s not who I am. I’m not some legend who couldn’t wait to join Starfleet. Never went in looking to be a hero and see the stars. I’m an asshole actually. Pretty good at being one too…. They let me give a eulogy at the funeral because his best friend was Jim Kirk, but I’ve never even met the man Spock knew. I wonder if the galaxy would be a better place right now if that Jim Kirk were here instead of me.

PICARD

Admiral, would you consider yourself friends with Captain Spock?

KIRK

Of course, Spock’s been my friend for years. More like brothers.

PICARD

And does Captain Spock respect you? Fight by your side?

KIRK

Yeah. In his own Vulcan way he absolutely does.

PICARD

From what I understand about the incident of years back, for Captain Spock, time was changed by what happened, but not until much later than you. You lost your father, and grew up different than the man you say Mr. Spock knew. Captain Spock however still grew up as he would have otherwise; joined Starfleet, and became the man he was supposed to be. Prior to the destruction of Vulcan, Spock was the same man as Ambassador Spock. If he is your friend, just as Ambassador Spock was friends with his Jim Kirk, then there must be some of that Kirk in you for such a friendship to still happen. Perhaps you are more like that version than you realize.

KIRK

I suppose that’s one way to look at it.

PICARD

Admiral. After what happened on Autumn, I asked to join your crew so I could get away from the planet. I knew I couldn’t stay there, looking through the rubble of my home. When I saw you were in command though, it wasn’t only about getting away. Everyone in the Federation knows who James Kirk is; the great man, the legend. It’s an honor to serve under your command, sir.

KIRK

And David Picard, it’s a pleasure to have you aboard.

PICARD

Thank you sir.

Comm signal sounds.

SULU

Admiral, we’re approaching Romulus.

KIRK

Thank you Mr. Sulu. I’ll be there in a moment.

PICARD

I’ll assemble the away team.

Picard leaves the scene before Kirk can respond. Closes with Kirk looking at the viewing portal.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

KHAN

Mr. Sulu, do you have the coordinates?

SULU

Locked in and ready.

Kirk enters the bridge from the shuttle.

KIRK

What’s our status?

SULU

We’re coming up on Romulus. We should dropping out of warp right above where the Tal Shiar base is located.

KIRK

Khan, I hope your memory is still good. Uhura, send a message to Starfleet notifying them we’ve arrived at Romulus.

SULU

Dropping out of warp now, Admiral.

View screen displays Romulus as it exits warp.

KIRK

Spock, can you scan the facility?

SPOCK

Unusual readings. Our scans are being deflected somehow. It is not traditional Romulan protection.

CHEKOV

I am picking up the same frequency as the ships from earlier Admiral. Coming from below the facility.

KHAN

It is likely they have a hangar below it for deploying.

CHEKOV

We should be able to transport a small team just inside their base, but I cannot scan the design.

KIRK

Can you find the front door Mr. Chekov?

CHEKOV

Yes sir.

KIRK

Then drop us off right past it.

CHEKOV

Aye, Admiral.

KIRK

Alright; Spock, Khan, you’re with me. Picard, have your team meet us at Transporter Room 2. Mr. Sulu, you have the bridge.

SULU

Aye, Admiral.

KIRK

And Hikaru, good luck.

Scene cuts to show Sulu nodding and then cuts back at Kirk getting into the shuttle with Spock and Khan.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

ROMULAN SOLDIER

Commander. A ship has exited warp above the planet.

SORAK

Is it Federation?

ROMULAN SOLDIER

Unknown. It’s shields are difficult for scans to penetrate.

SORAK

Then grab a telescope and look up at the sky. We need to know who has entered our space.

ROMULAN SOLDIER 2

Sir, we have detected transporter activity inside the facility.

SORAK

What?!

INT - TAL SHIAR ENTRANCE CORRIDOR

KIRK

Spock, can you pick up anything now that we’re inside?

SPOCK

I am detecting a high amount of tachyon emissions in one area of the facility.

KHAN

That will most likely be their central array. It’s used to communicate with Romulan forces through subspace and rotate their cloaking harmonics.

KIRK

You knew about this thing?

KHAN

Section 31 assumed its existence; we could never confirm it.

PICARD

Which way?

Spock points in the direction they need to head.

SPOCK

In that direction.

As Spock is about to turn a corner he is stopped by Picard who then signals to be quiet. He then motions for another officer to come up as two Romulans round the corner. Picard and the officer quickly subdue them and he dismantles the weapons. He then turns to the team and issues orders to the security officers.

PICARD

Alright, Mr. Spock you’re behind me and we’ll cover the front. You two take the rear. And I want one of you on each side next to Khan and the Admiral. Let’s move.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Are they in?

CHEKOV

Yes, sir.

SULU

Raise shields. Engineering, how are we looking?

SCOTTY

Shields are back to 100% sir. We weren’t able to repair the forward torpedo tubes, so we can only fire from the rear still. All phasers are charged and ready for you at least.

SULU

It’ll have to be enough.

CHEKOV

I’m detecting two Warbirds leaving the planet surface.

SULU

Here we go.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

The away team are exchanging fire in a corridor.

KIRK

Looks like they know we’re here.

SPOCK

It would appear so.

KIRK

Is this the only way we can go?

Khan heads back and rounds a corner from where they came. As he’s about to turn it, enemy forces fire shots at him. He quickly closes and locks the gate hatch before returning to the others.

KHAN

The way we came is occupied.

A flash grenade is thrown at the group.

PICARD

Get down!

Everyone lowers down and tries to close their eyes in time. While they are disoriented, one of the security team is shot. Picard releases the protection cover on his rifle and overloads it. Throws it down the hallway and then slings it down the hallway across the floor. It explodes and takes out the Romulans.

KIRK

Good thinking.

Picard picks up the rifle of his fallen officer.

PICARD

We’re getting through this Admiral.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Uhura, hail the ships.

UHURA

They’re not responding.

SULU

Open a wide channel. [breaks for Uhura’s signal] Attention Romulan Warbirds, this is Captain Hikaru Sulu of the Federation starship Enterprise. We are here on a diplomatic mission. Near Romulan space we encountered a hostile force and fear it is coming for Romulus. We would be willing to share the information we gathered for your government to review. If we-

CHEKOV

They’re firing captain.

SULU

Well so much for that. Target their weapons and return fire. Focus all phasers on one ship and turn us about to get between them. Then use the rear torpedoes at the other ship.

ENSIGN

Aye, sir.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

Shows both ships firing and damage being caused.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

CHEKOV

The first shots took down their shields, captain. Khan had the right frequency. The other vessel has substantial damage to their shields but are still up, and they are rotating their shield harmonics.

SULU

Turn us and fire torpedoes.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

Enterprise fires torpedoes at the ship with downed shields, destroying it.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Cheers among the bridge.

SULU

Chekov, status of the other ship?

CHEKOV

Some of their weapons are down. Shields are getting lower.

UHURA

Captain, I’m picking up transmissions from the surface.

SULU

Is it the away team?

UHURA

No. Two more Warbirds have launched and are heading our way.

Wide shot of the bridge showing reactions.

SULU

We got this.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

The groups enters a long silo section with passing bridges strewn through it.

PICARD

Which way Mr. Spock?

SPOCK

There.

Another of the three remaining security officers is shot.

PICARD

Alright, let’s go. Everyone back-to-back with someone and pull each other down as necessary. Focus on cover fire; we need to get across, not worry about making hits.

As they make the way across the silo they rise up a staircase to another bridge and cross over. Everyone is dodging and helping call out for others to duck as necessary. The two other security officers are killed as they traverse and fall off the bridge.

PICARD

Now, go!

They run to the opening and escape. Kirk and Picard are last to go. Picard looks up to see someone about to fire.

PICARD

Admiral!

He jumps and fires at the Romulan soldier while also taking the hit for Kirk.

KIRK

Picard!

Kirk grabs Picard and drags him to the opening to safety.

KIRK

Picard, the damn idiot, speak.

PICARD

Admiral, are you hit?

KIRK

No, I’m not hit. Hold on alright, once we get to the array we’ll lower the shields and transport you to medical.

PICARD

There’s no time, sir. You need to go.

KIRK

I’m not leaving you here with more forces coming. Now-

PICARD

It’s already too late sir. And it’s fine. It’s just me. At least I get to see….

KIRK

Picard!

Wide shot shows a Romulan soldier about to enter the corridor and aims at Kirk. Khan shoots him before he can fire which startles Kirk.

KHAN

There, Kirk, now I saved you as well. Feel free to cry over me as we get moving.

Kirk stands up and leaves Picard’s body, moving on ahead with Khan and Spock.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Cut to rumbles from the attack.

SULU

What’s our status?

CHEKOV

Shields are down to 65%, captain.

SULU

And the Warbirds?

CHEKOV

Unknown, sir. I believe they know we can only fire torpedoes from the rear and are changing patterns to match.

SCOTTY

Engineering to bridge.

SULU

Bridge here Mr. Scott.

SCOTTY

The engines are about to burn out, sir. We cannot keep taking these hits and maintain propulsion.

SULU

Move us close enough for the planet to catch us in its gravity. Then hit a quick burst to speed us along its orbit.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

Camera shows the Enterprise exchanging fire as it enters orbit of Romulus.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

ENSIGN

Now what sir?

SULU

Stop all propulsion and let the planet move us around in its orbit. Use our side thrusters to keep turning us about as we circle. Keep firing as they pass over and we get an opening. Hopefully they’ll be more careful to fire on their own surface.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

A large door opens to the central chamber with the array.

KIRK

Am I the only one who thinks this is too easy?

They walk forward to the platform.

SPOCK

Readings indicate that is the array.

KIRK

Alright, let’s hope it has what we need.

As Kirk and Spock move forward a forcefield comes down and surrounds them.

SPOCK

Admiral-

KIRK

Yeah, I know Spock.

SORAK

A few short hours ago I was told to not underestimate the Federation. I must acknowledge how impressively you made it here only to fall short of your victory. Who shall be recorded for having invaded the Tal Shiar?

KIRK

Admiral James Kirk.

SORAK

Kirk? The Kirk? Romulans have heard stories about you. Knowing this now, I expected more.

KIRK

Funny, so did I. Khan.

Khan comes around the corner from having been hiding behind the doorway. He shoots the tab in Sorak’s hand, causing the forcefield to go down.

SORAK

Fire!

Several Romulan soldiers come out from hiding and fire at the team while Sorak flees away from them. Kirk and Spock take cover as Khan joins them.

KIRK

Good thing you thought they might have a trap like that.

KHAN

It was the only sensible thing. Kirk, provide cover fire and I’ll flank them.

KIRK

Why am I being the stooge?

KHAN

I am a better shot.

They perform their tactic, and defeat the Romulan soldiers until only one remains against the railing besides the Romulan council. One of the council members takes the opening the pushes the soldier over the railing to his death.

KIRK

I take it you’re the Romulan council?

PRAETOR HAREED

Observant. Now be prudent and get us out of here.

KIRK

I’ll take care of that in just a moment. First I need to help my ship.

Kirk and Spock step up to the array platform and inspect it.

KIRK

Spock?

SPOCK

I can decipher it. Ambassador Spock taught me Romulan prior to his passing.

Spock performs actions on the array while Khan confirms the soldiers are dead. Sorak is not among them.

SPOCK

I have gained access to their cloaking modulation data.

KIRK

Can you transmit it to the Enterprise?

SPOCK

Yes. I am locking in on Federation bands now to transmit the cipher.

KIRK

Perfect.

SPOCK

Admiral, according to the computer the array has been transmitting to Romulan ships spread throughout the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. They are mobilized for an attack.

KIRK

Can you get their exact positions?

SPOCK

Negative. Only Sector data.

KIRK

Alright, that’ll have to do. Send it out for everyone you can.

PRAETOR HAREED

Behind you!

Several Romulan soldiers are approaching from the hallway leading to the chamber. Kirk and Khan begin firing.

KIRK

Spock, take cover and fire. What are you doing?

SPOCK

The array is attempting to readjust back to its original sequence. If I step away now it will not complete the transmission.

KIRK

We can take care of it once we deal with these guys.

SPOCK

Jim, the Enterprise may not survive without this.

KHAN

Damn you fools.

Khan gets up from his cover and heads to the door, firing at the enemy soldiers.

KIRK

Lock the door!

KHAN

If we simply lock it they will get through in seconds.

Khan reaches the door and hits the pad to close it; then steps out to the other side.

KIRK

Khan, what the hell are you doing?

Khan looks back at Kirk while it’s closing.

KHAN

Proving who is better.

Khan returns fire as the Romulans pick up their pace. As the door closes he looks back one more time.

KHAN

Remember your promise to me Kirk.

The door closes and the scene transitions.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

CHEKOV

Captain, we have a problem.

SULU

What?

CHEKOV

Two of the Warbirds are coming about beneath us.

SULU

Good way to not risk hitting the planet anymore. Mr. Scott, how much more power can you give the shields?

SCOTTY

Bridge, we’re out of energy down here unless you found a way to convert sweat. The engines are holding together but barely, and the phaser banks are almost depleted. We’ve got plenty of torpedoes left if you can line-up better shots.

UHURA

Captain, we’re receiving a transmission from the surface?

SULU

More ships?

UHURA

No sir, it’s the away team. We’re receiving the Romulan cloaking signal.

SULU

Chekov, what can you do with it?

CHEKOV

Testing now Captain. [break for loading] Yes, yes I can detect their cloaking signals. I should be able to scan for their distortions.

SULU

Do it.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

Display the battle taking place, showing the Romulan attack pattern and then shifting in and out of cloaking.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Mr. Chekov, I need to an update.

CHEKOV

I can detect them sir, but only for a short time. Our scanners are not made to adjust for moving distortions of this type. If we fire at them when the scan hits it could miss miss if they’re still moving.

SCOTTY

Chekov, can the scanner be attached to anything?

CHEKOV

Yes, so long as it can receive input signatures.

SCOTTY

Alright, I have an idea. Chekov, transmit that down to engineering. McCoy, I need you down here.

MCCOY

I’m a bit busy at the moment Mr. Scott. We have injured patients up here with more coming in.

SCOTTY

McCoy if you don’t get down here right now there might not be a medical bay to help injured. Now get your ass down to engineering.

SULU

Doctor, you heard him; that’s an order.

MCCOY

Heading down now.

INT - TAL SHIAR CHAMBER

SPOCK

Signals sent Admiral. I’ve disabled the array as well.

KIRK

Did the Enterprise get the message?

SPOCK

I hope so.

SORAK

Adorable.

Kirk reaches for his weapon which he had set down, but Sorak shoots it.

SORAK

I didn’t know Vulcans knew how to hope. You are Vulcan, no?

SPOCK

Captain Spock.

SORAK

Spock? Ah I see. You are the younger Mr. Spock.

SPOCK

You know of me?

SORAK

I know of the other you. The Tal Shiar care little about you Mr. Spock.

KIRK

We already disabled the array. The Federation knows about the Romulan frequencies. It’s over.

SORAK

Over? No my dear Admiral, we are only delayed. Once the array is turned back on, I can create new frequencies to rotate our shields and cloaking. Coordinate my fleets on adjusting their patterns. It is not over at all.

SPOCK

I have added an encryption to the array. It will take considerable effort to decrypt and by then your forces will be overcome.

SORAK

Unless of course you tell me. After all, you’re not going to risk the death of yourself and your Admiral are you?

SPOCK

My life is unimportant.

SORAK

With the recent death of your other self I rather doubt that.

KIRK

Would you mind shooting already? I like that I get to die knowing what they say about Romulans is right, but this is too much.

SORAK

And what do humans say of Romulans?

KIRK

Oh not humans, no. Klingons. Spock, how many words are there for Romulan in Klingon again?

SPOCK

26, Admiral.

KIRK

Right, 26. And some of those translate to coward don’t they?

SPOCK

All but one of them.

KIRK

Well 25 out of 26 isn’t bad. What was the last one?

SPOCK

There is no human word appropriate enough for the vulgar translation.

KIRK

Oh, well, that’s a shame.

SORAK

Silence.

KIRK

So what are you going to do? Shoot us? We don’t even have phasers now. Unless you’re too afraid to take us.

SORAK

We know of you as well Admiral Kirk. You consider yourself so formidable after the time-travel incident from long ago, all because you defeated some Romulans.

KIRK

You’re right, I beat a lot of Romulans.

SORAK

You defeated miners. Fools who had never known battle. You have never faced the might of a true Romulan.

KIRK

Then show me.

SORAK

Humph, you really believe goading me will work?

KIRK

I’m just trying to find out if you’re as bad as Section 31, or if you actually have what it takes to be a warrior.

Sorak disables the phaser and tosses it. As he does, Kirk lunges at his midsection and Spock goes in for a punch.

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

Camera pans to show an engineering team setting down a torpedo.

SCOTTY

Alright lads, let’s make some room. Come on doctor time to open her up.

Scotty and McCoy begin opening the torpedo and integrating a circuit for the modulation system.

MCCOY

Mr. Scott, wouldn’t it be better to have another engineer do this?

SCOTTY

Aside from myself, you’re the only idiot who’s ever opened up and worked with a torpedo. Not exactly the best time to train them on how to do it.

MCCOY

You remember when I did this last time it nearly exploded, right?

SCOTTY

Yes. Nearly. Which means it didn’t. [breaks to integrate the circuit] And look at that, we’re done. Turn her back on and…. Why isn’t it working?!

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

Sorak throws Kirk aside while fighting Spock. He manages to grab Spock by the throat.

SORAK

Our reports say you can fight Vulcan. I expected better.

Kirk comes up from behind and swings a metal rod against Sorak’s head. It causes him to stumble and release Spock, who then falls out of the way.

SORAK

I have children who can swing with more force than that Kirk.

KIRK

Wait a minute, you have children? Who made that bad decision?

Sorak and Kirk charge at each other as the scene cuts.

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

SCOTTY

Why is this stupid thing not working?! Chekov are you sure there’s nothing else?

MCCOY

What if we close the panel? Maybe it needs to be latched?

SCOTTY

There, closed, and still nothing. Why won’t this bloody thing turn on.

Scotty goes to grab a wrench and hit it. McCoy stops him.

MCCOY

Woah woah woah woah, now, let’s reconsider hitting the photon torpedo with a wrench while we’re standing right next to the warp core shall we?

Behind them, Keenser hits it with a wrench. The torpedo sparks, sending Keenser flying, and it activates.

SCOTTY

Keenser!

MCCOY

I got him.

SCOTTY

I cannot believe it bloody worked. Lads let’s lift and load it up.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

Kirk manages to push Sorak over a railing, sending them both falling onto a platform/bridge below. As Kirk tries to attack again, Sorak catches him and then dangles Kirk by his foot over the edge.

SORAK

And thus comes to an end the voyages of James Kirk.

Sorak drops him

SPOCK

NO!

Spock jumps down from above and strikes Sorak, knocking him to the flooring. From his position Sorak manages to trip Spock. As he tries to stand, Kirk, who was holding onto the bottom rail, lifts up and grabs Sorak, dragging him over. The weight is too much and Kirk’s grip slips. His arm is caught by Spock.

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

Scotty closes the latch for the torpedo tube.

SCOTTY

Bridge, one anti-cloaking torpedo ready when you are.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Take us away from the planet’s orbit. Wait for the moment a ship is about to cloak and fire.

View screens show the battle waging. As one ship stops firing Sulu can see the distortion as it’s about to pass over the Enterprise.

SULU

Now.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

The torpedo fires outward as the Warbird finishes its decloaking while moving off to the side. The torpedo then begins to curve.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Close cuts of the crew watching the view screen as the torpedo turns.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

Wide shot as the torpedo increases its curve sharply, and then hits the Warbird. The ship decloaks from the impact, showing it struck the bridge, and it explodes.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Pan shot of the Enterprise crew cheering.

Close pan in engineering of Scotty and team cheering.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

Sorak swings himself while still holding onto Kirk. He manages to get enough swing to let go and grab the edge of a nearby platform. Sorak lifts himself up while Spock gets Kirk back on the platform.

Kirk and Spock walk around from opposite sides to the other bridge and face Sorak. They are all breathing heavy and tired.

SPOCK

You cannot win.

SORAK

I do not believe in the no-win situation Mr. Spock.

KIRK

Funny, neither do I. We can’t both be right.

Kirk grabs the railing and exchanges a look with Spock. While Sorak is facing Kirk, Spock looks at the rail next to him.

SORAK

The railing is too narrow to provide you an advantage.

KIRK

Yes it is.

Cuts as they are all still trying to catch their breath.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

SULU

Status on the other warbirds? They cloaked and haven’t returned. Where are they Chekov?

CHEKOV

They’re not moving, captain. Both are stopped.

SULU

Hail them.

UHURA

No response.

SULU

They may think we can only target them cloaked while moving. Chekov, you can target them so long as they’re staying still?

CHEKOV

Yes, captain.

SULU

Lock on and fire.

EXT - ENTERPRISE BATTLE

Enterprise fires a barrage of torpedoes at the Warbirds, destroying them.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Cheering among the crew on the bridge.

SULU

Not a bad day when-

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

KIRK

-a Romulan just stands still for you to hit him.

SORAK

What are you on about?

KIRK

You want the railing? You can have it. Now Spock!

Kirk splits the latch on one side of the railing as Spock matches on his end. The railing spins out from one side as Sorak grabs hold of the flooring to hang out. Kirk and Spock then split the latches for the other side, sending the railing falling with Sorak hanging on.

KIRK

I really wish we had been able to do that sooner.

INT - ENTERPRISE BRIDGE

Cuts of cheering across the bridge.

SULU

Are you reading any more, Mr. Chekov?

CHEKOV

Negative.

SULU

Engineering, how are you down there?

INT - ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING

SCOTTY

We’re fine down here, captain.

Keenser is being difficult while Bones tends to him, and smacks Bones’ hand.

MCCOY

Keenser damn it, I’m trying to help. With your anatomy it’s going to take at least a month to heal so deal with it.

INT - ENTERPRISE

UHURA

Captain, we’re receiving a message from the surface. It’s the Admiral.

KIRK

Enterprise, do you read?

SULU

We read you loud and clear Admiral. It’s great to hear your voice. Is the team alright?

KIRK

Myself and Mr. Spock are alright. We’re with the Romulan council. They were kind enough to give us the access codes to break through their planetside jamming. We have some injuries down here and could use a medical team. A couple of security teams too in case there are some Tal Shiar stragglers.

SULU

We’re on it Admiral. We’ll notify Starfleet as well.

INT - TAL SHIAR BASE

KIRK

We all set?

Hareed steps away from the array before shutting it down.

PRAETOR HAREED

Yes. A message has been sent to all Romulan vessels across the quadrants recalling them to Romulus, and that we have a Federation vessel visiting. Thank you again Admiral for your assistance in this matter.

KIRK

I’m glad we could arrive in time, and that you all were in one piece.

PRAETOR HAREED

And so we do not forget, I would like to discuss with you the news of the Federation developing cloaking technology.

KIRK

You know what? I would too.

The group approach the door for the chamber.

KIRK

You should all stand back in case there are more Tal Shiar on the other side.

Kirk opens the door as he and Spock ready their rifles. It opens to show a hallway filled with dead Romulans. Khan is standing at the doorway, covered in green Romulan blood.

KIRK

Khan?

KHAN

Where is all your blood? I heard shouting and fighting through the door. Did you do nothing while I was out here?

SPOCK

We accomplished our mission.

Khan looks over at Spock, and then at Kirk.

KIRK

Our Romulan kind of fell. There wasn’t any blood.

Khan reaches out his hand to Kirk. He wipes the front of his hand against Kirk’s cheek, and the back of his hand against the other.

KIRK

You know Khan, if I didn’t know better, I would almost think you like me.

KHAN

Kirk, I know eight alien languages, and not one of them contains a word capable of expressing how much I hate you.

KIRK

Good talk.

Kirks walks past Khan with the Romulan council behind him.

SPOCK

Khan.

Spock walks by as well, covering the rear.

KHAN

Mr. Spock.

Spock comes back for a moment before continuing.

SPOCK

It would appear you were indeed, better, than the Tal Shiar.

Close up on Khan smiling as it cuts.

EXT - TAL SHIAR BASE

The groups walks out of the base and are met by several members of the Enterprise crew. Uhura runs up to hug Spock as Kirk walks past them to Bones.

KIRK

Bones.

MCCOY

Jim. I almost can’t believe this all actually worked.

KIRK

How’d we do on the ship?

MCCOY

A few major injuries. Lots of minors. Nothing that can’t be patched up. Down here? I heard only you and Spock made it.

KIRK

And Khan.

MCCOY

Typical.

Cuts to Uhura and Spock.

SPOCK

Nyota. I am sorry.

UHURA

For what?

SPOCK

I do not have a ring.

Spock gets down on one knee.

UHURA

Spock, get up. You cannot be doing this now. Here?

SPOCK

I love you. [break as Spock takes Uhura’s hand] I don’t want to spend the rest of my life wondering about whether or not I will die alone. I want to spend it living with you; hoping with you; [short pause as Uhura sheds tears] crying with you. Will you marry me?

UHURA

Yes!

Spock and Uhura embrace and cuts back to Kirk and Bones.

MCCOY

Did we just witness a Vulcan proposing to a Human on Romulus?

KIRK

I think we just did.

MCCOY

Wonders never cease.

Cuts back to Uhura and Spock, sharing a kiss. Then cuts back to Kirk and Bones smiling. Once more back to Spock and Uhura as the Romulan star fades the scene.

Transitions to a transporter room with Kirk, Scotty, and Khan.

INT - ENTERPRISE TRANSPORTER ROOM

KIRK

I guess this is goodbye Khan. There are enough supplies to get you and your people through two years. After that you’ll have to rely on the native resources.

KHAN

I have already inspected all the data on the planet. We will manage comfortably. It was….Try to not pass through too often, wou

KIRK

Interesting?

KHAN

Informative. [breaks to show Kirk nodding] Try not to pass through too often, would you?

KIRK

You mean you don’t want to get picked up for Spock’s wedding?

KHAN

Farewell, Kirk.

Transporter activates and Khan leaves.

SCOTTY

Good bloody riddance.

Scotty and Kirk exit and cuts.

INT - ENTERPRISE OUTSIDE KIRK’S QUARTERS

SCOTTY

Now don’t you worry bout a thing, Admiral. Soon as repairs are complete we’ll be underway and have you back in no time.

KIRK

Sounds good Scotty. And-

Comms interrupts the conversation.

CHEKOV

Admiral.

KIRK

Yes Chekov?

CHEKOV

We have a subspace message coming in for you, Admiral. It’s Carol Marcus.

SCOTTY

Well I suppose that’s my cue. Good luck.

Scotty leaves as Kirk enter his quarters.

INT - ENTERPRISE KIRK’S QUARTERS

KIRK

Put it on through Chekov.

Kirk sits down, and a display on the table shows Marcus’ face.

MARCUS

Jim Kirk, it’s about time. Do you have any idea how many messages I have left trying to reach you for the past several months? What have you been doing?

KIRK

Carol, I, Carol I am so sorry. I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am to see your face. I, I don’t know what I’m doing here right now. Never thought I’d say this, but I don’t know how to hold it together.

MARCUS

Jim?

KIRK

I don’t know how to hold it together.

MARCUS

Jim, what’s wrong?

KIRK

First Spock died, and not my Spock, the other Mr. Spock. And I couldn’t think of a eulogy so I imagined my Spock was dead and I was speaking at his funeral. Then I saw what happened to Autumn, and the destruction you could see from space was horrible enough, I…. I haven’t even gone to see the surface yet.

MARCUS

Jim….

KIRK

And then we met someone whose family died on Autumn. I mean this poor guy, his wife was killed for no reason, and she was pregnant, and I can’t begin to imagine the pain he was in the whole time. He never once let anyone see it. He held it together, and that’s what we do, you know? We hold it together. How, how can we hold it together without a family to come home to? All his hopes, and dreams, and future were taken from him but he kept moving. Then he, then he jumped in the way. I was supposed to be shot but he took the hit. He died saving me. I don’t, I don’t even remember his last words. I think he was trying to saying something about seeing his family again. He saved me, and, now he’s gone. They’re all gone.

Kirk leans forward and buries his face in his hands.

MARCUS

What was his name?

KIRK

David. David Picard. Why?

MARCUS

David. I like the name David.

KIRK

What?

Kirk wipes the tears from his face and looks at the view screen as Carol stands up, revealing the large baby bump as she rubs her belly.

MARCUS

I said I like the name David.

Kirks eyes widen as he realizes the situation.

KIRK

No shit.

The lines “Who am I? James Tiberius Kirk.” sounds too much like the book is about yourself. They want something powerful, something about space.
