Beginning of the year activities to introduce students to tools:

  1. Create a Google Form to gather student information and/or feedback on the week.  Embed it on your Haiku page.  Analyze summary of responses and use conditional formatting in the response spreadsheet to help analyze written data.
  2. Push out a Google Drawing to students to have them develop a mind map or collage with pictures, text, shapes, etc.  Post the Google Drawings in a class wikiproject.
  3. Push out a Google Slides for students to use for a presentation.  Have students add images and videos straight from Google Slides and talk about using appropriately licensed pics & videos.  Show students how to find appropriately licensed images and videos from Google Images search as well as other Creative Commons websites.
  4. Push out a “Treasure Hunt” Google Doc to students to help them explore the features of Google Docs, including items from the following menus:
  1. Insert - images, links, equations, drawings, tables
  2. Format - all items
  3. Tools - word count, research, define, spelling
  4. Table (once have table) - merging cells
  5. Collaborative features - comments, “editing/suggesting/viewing” mode
  6. Add-ons - Easybib
  1. Create a Padlet wall for students to post something to (a written response; an image or video that relates to the topic online, an introduction to themselves - with webcam photo).  Embed the Padlet wall on the class Haiku page.  For moderation, set it so you have to approve each post and changes to avoid inappropriate images being posted.
  2. Find an image (or bank of images) for students to annotate using Thinglink.  Embed the Thinglinks on a class wiki-project on Haiku.
  3. Create an Office Mix from one of your PowerPoint presentations to deliver instruction to students asynchronously.  Include quizzes in order to gather formative data.  Challenge: Have students transform their presentations (can download from Google Slides into PowerPoint) into an Office Mix and submit their link to you in a Google Form for you to view & grade.  Post well-done Mixes on the Haiku page for other students to learn from.
  4. Transform one of your PDF worksheets using GoFormative and have students complete online.  Project the “calendar view” responses live while students are working on it and have students collaborate and help each other.
  5. Import one of your slide decks (PowerPoint or Google Slides) into PearDeck and transform your instruction experience with live feedback from students, including opportunities to analyze mistakes, ask questions on the fly, and follow up with struggling students.
