2022 Rules and Regulations
1. ELIGIBILITY: Open to youth that are between the ages of 8 and 21 as of January 1st, 2022. All cattle must be solely owned by the exhibitor making the entry.
2. ENTRIES: Entry fees are a non-refundable $50 for each animal entered. Entries must be submitted electronically on or before Saturday, May 14, 2022. Late entries are $100 per head and will be accepted until Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 9 a.m. THE EXHIBITORS MUST SHOW THEIR OWN ANIMAL. ID MAY BE REQUIRED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE SHOW COMMITTEE.
A complete entry consists of the date of birth and breed of animal. Entries not providing this information will NOT be accepted and will be required to late enter at check-in and pay the $100 late entry fee. Entry fees may not be transferred to another exhibitor. All cattle late entered will be required to pay the $100 late fee.
3. ARRIVAL: Cattle must arrive by 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 21st, 2022.
4. PARKING/STALLING: Stalling off/in trailers is required. GENERATORS ARE ENCOURAGED for all. Trailer parking will be first come, first serve. Exhibitors are REQUIRED to clean up bedding, trash, etc. before leaving (a manure bunk will be available for use).
5. CHECK-IN: Check in will be from 7-9 a.m. Saturday morning. Registration certificates must be presented at check-in time. Tattoos and RFID tags (required) will be checked and must correspond to registration papers. Registration applications, faxes or photocopies will not be accepted. Animals can only enter the “check-in chute” one time.
6. CROSSBRED STEER/MARKET HEIFER/COMMERCIAL HEIFER DIVISIONS:
Unregistered steers will be shown in the crossbred division
All heifers shown as a market animal will be shown in the market heifer division
Unregistered heifers shown as a breeding female will be shown in the commercial division
Crossbred steers, market heifers and commercial heifers will all be shown by weight
7. BREED REQUIREMENTS:
Angus Heifer & Steer: Purebred Angus Registration Papers
Char Composite Heifer & Steer: Charolais Registration Papers & Color Requirements
Chi Heifer & Steer: All registration papers issued by the ACA
Hereford Heifer & Steer: Purebred Hereford Registration Papers
Maine Heifer & Steer: 75%- Maine Registration Papers (Brown)
Mainetainer Heifer & Steer: 25%-74% All Registration papers issued by the Maine Association
Shorthorn Heifer & Steer: 15/16 – Shorthorn Registration Papers
Shorthorn Plus Heifer: Minimum 50% - Shorthorn Plus Registration Papers
Shorthorn Plus Steer: Minimum 25% - Shorthorn Plus Registration Papers
Purebred Simmental Heifer & Steer: 7/8 or greater Simmental Registration Papers
Percentage Simmental Heifer & Steer: Minimum 50% but no greater than 7/8 Simmental Registration Papers
AORB: Any animal that does not meet the above requirements but possesses a valid breed registration paper.
10. AWARDS: Champion breed heifers and steers will be recognized. Top 5 Overall Market Animals and Breeding Heifers will receive $500 for Grand, $400 for Reserve, $300 for 3rd, $200 for 4th and $100 for 5th. A Champion and Reserve Overall Bred and Owned will be recognized. No awards for Bred and Owned division champions. NO REFUNDS OR LOST PREMIUMS WILL BE REIMBURSED.
11. SHOWMANSHIP: Showmanship will be $10 per exhibitor. Participant sign-up for showmanship will be during check-in times. Showmanship will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning with Seniors (18-21) Intermediate (15-17) Junior (12-14) and Beginners (8-11). Classes will be divided by age as of January 1st, 2022. Exhibitors must show their own animal.
12. GROOMING REGULATIONS: Use of false tail heads or adding of hair or hemp is prohibited. No powder can be used. Coloring agents may be used. NO forced administration of fluids to create gut fill will be allowed. Violation will result in the disqualification of the entry and exhibitor.
13. RESPONSIBILITY: The Eaton County Agricultural Society and the Eaton Elite show committee will not be responsible for any loss by death, injury, crippling, bruises, theft, or condemnation.
14. FAIRGROUND RULES:
15. DANGEROUS ANIMALS: Animals must be under control of the exhibitor at all times. For safety, the show committee will request that dangerous animals be removed.
16. Results accepted by the MI SHOWS Program.
17. COVID regulations: The fairgrounds and the show committee will not be responsible for anyone who falls ill due to attending the show. Attending the show will be at your own risk. Mask mandate will be in accordance with state executive orders. The show committee and fairgrounds will be allowed to change/release new rules regarding the COVID regulations if it is necessary.
Breeding Heifers
1. SHOW TIMES AND ORDER: Heifers will show beginning 15 minutes after the overall Market Animal selection. The show order will be: AORB (Any Other Registered Breeds), Angus, Char Composite, Chi, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, Mainetainer, Shorthorn, Shorthorn Plus, Simmental, Percent Sim, Commercial and Top 5 Overall Heifers.
2. Heifers born from September 1, 2020 thru December 31, 2021 are eligible to show.
3. Registered heifers within breed will show from youngest to oldest. All heifers entered in a specific breed must be registered solely in the name of the youth exhibitor with their respective national breed association. Registration certificates must be presented at check-in time. All breeding heifers must be tattooed and tattoos must correspond to registration papers. Heifers that are dual registered can show with only one breed and must be entered as such.
4. Commercial will be shown by weight and all registered heifers will be shown by date of birth. Commercial heifers will compete for Supreme Heifer, and market heifers will compete for Overall Champion Market Animal.
Market Steers and Heifers
1. SHOW TIMES AND ORDER: Steers will begin 15 minutes after the last class of showmanship in the following order: AORB (Any Other Registered Breeds), Angus, Char Composite, Chi, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, Mainetainer, Shorthorn, Shorthorn Plus, Simmental, Percent Sim, Market Heifers, Crossbred, and Top 5 Overall Market Animals.
2. Prospect steers will be shown by breed and weight. All steers entered in a specific breed must be registered solely in the name of the youth exhibitor with their respective national breed association. All steers entered in a breed will abide by the rules for registry and showing. Registration certificates or performance pedigrees must be presented at check-in time. All breed steers must be tattooed and tattoos must correspond to registration papers. Steers that are dual registered can show with only one breed and must be entered as such.
3. Market heifers will be shown by weight. There will be no breed classes for market heifers.

Attention Junior Angus Exhibitors: The Michigan Jr. Angus Preview Show will be held as part of the Eaton Elite Show. Classes will be offered for Angus heifers, cow/calf pairs, bulls, and steers. Exhibitors’ birthdate for the Jr. Angus Preview Show must be from January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2013. All bulls shown in the Jr. Angus Show must be bred and owned by the junior exhibitor and born after January 2021. All cow/calf pairs must be owned by the junior exhibitor. The Michigan Angus Auxiliary will again be sponsoring a showmanship contest in conjunction with the Preview Show on Saturday, May 21st. There will be three divisions (junior, intermediate, and senior). Contestants in the SENIOR DIVISION who wish to be considered for the National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest, July 6 - 9 in Kansas City must meet all the requirements for the national contest to be eligible to represent Michigan in the National contest. Copies of these rules are available at angus.org/njaa/contests/ShowmanshipRules or from Kendra Diekevers prior to the contest. Participants in the national contest will show heifers provided by exhibitors at the NJAS. Special attention should be paid to the following rules for participating in the National Contest: (1) Contestants must be junior, life or regular members of the American Angus Association PRIOR to participating in their state contest. (2) Contestants must be Michigan residents and members of the Michigan Jr. Angus Association prior to the contest. (3) Contestants must be at least 16 years of age by January 1, 2022, and not have had their 21st birthday before January 1, 2022. (4) Any contestant who has participated in any of the previous National Junior Angus showmanship contests is automatically ineligible for ensuing national showmanship competition. (5) To be eligible, each contestant must presently own registered Angus cattle. (6) Junior members who are interested in competing in this contest must register on or before May 15th by contacting Kendra Diekevers at kdiekevers2@email.davenport.edu and providing their American Angus Association member code. Those competing for this national contest on May 21 may show another exhibitor’s Angus heifer or steer in showmanship if they do not have an Angus entered in the Preview Show.
**Market animals and breeding heifers will be shown as a part of the Eaton Elite Angus classes. MI Jr. Angus Preview Show placings will be recorded separately by the MI Jr. Angus Association. **
