Wind Up Toy Lab

Living things come in all shapes and sizes, from microscopic protists to whales and from fungi to fish. What does it mean to say that something is living? Based on the characteristics of life, you are going to examine a wind-up toy and determine what if any characteristics of life the toy possesses.

Materials:

• Wind-up toy

Procedure:

1. Your teacher will give you and your partner a wind-up toy.
2. Take a minute or two to play with your toy, and then follow the next direction.
3. In the space below write each characteristic of life and explain whether or not the toy has the characteristic of life listed. Remember to write in complete sentences. Try to use vocabulary words in your responses.
