LHS Physical Education Information
Our mission is to develop a physically educated person who has mastered the necessary movement skills to participate confidently in many different forms of physical activity, values physical fitness, and understands that both are intimately related to health and well-being.
Physical Education is that part of the total process of education which utilizes health-fitness activities, games, and sports to help the individual achieve the goals of education. Regular physical activity increases a person's ability to perform daily activities with great vigor and may reduce the risk for specific health/wellness problems now and later in life.
The LHS Physical Education Department is committed to providing a quality physical education program. Physical Education (PE) classes provide an opportunity to ensure a regular amount of desirable physical activity and help establish activity patterns that may extend into adulthood.
Regular participation in physical education programs will:
Basic Rules & Expectations
1) Be On Time!!!
2) Dress for Class
3) Participate IN & WITH Class
4) Have a Positive Mental Attitude
No Cell Phones in class
If you are sitting out (not participating)...Cannot sit by/disturb anyone else / Be quiet
GRADING
Formative (20%) = Cumulative Participation System (Daily Points System)
Full Credit 5 days or Less Absent (w/in 6-week grading period)
50% Credit 9 days or LESS absent (w/in 6-week grading period)
ZERO Credit if they acquire more than 9 days of absences*
*Absences can be made up! See General Make-Up Policy below
Summative (80%) = Specific Unit Grading & Assessment
Unit Grades will be based on Observation of sportsmanship, proper skills, strategies & rules.
Written Tests, Skills Tests or Reflections will also make up portions of the Unit Grades.
Unexcused absences for an entire unit will result in an F.
General Make-Up Policy
You & your teacher will coordinate/schedule you for any make-ups that you will need.
Make-Ups can be done during I/E time, before or after school, or with fitness logs.
Any make-ups performed after missing/skipping a scheduled “make-up will result in a maximum score of 70% of the points you could have earned.
Physical Education Make-Ups are your responsibility!
Tardies
The 1st and 2nd tardy for your class are warnings. The third tardy is a detention to be served with you. There will be an automated discipline referral with consequences submitted. Students who continue to be tardy will receive an automated referral, meet with administration, and receive subsequent consequences.
Medicals
Students with an illness or injury lasting 3 days or fewer shall bring in a note from home to excuse them from participation (they will not receive full participation points, but may still gain other points for the day). The full participation points can still be made up, if they desire. The student is still required to dress for class while on any medical (still gaining points). Any condition which prohibits your child from participating in Physical Education longer than 3 days must be affirmed with a medical Doctor’s note (brought/sent to the school nurse). The medical note MUST state what the student is ALLOWED to do. For example, if your child cannot run, but can walk or if they cannot use their legs, but can still do upper body work, that must be stated on the note. Students requiring extended medical exemption MAY BE removed from physical fitness until he/she can fully participate, or will be REQUIRED to make it up at a later time.
