Prayers for Those Who Have Lost Loved Ones

Have you lost a loved one recently or know someone who has? If you have, you know how difficult it can be. Here are nine prayers that will help you through this tough time and connect you with God when you need Him the most.

The loss of a loved one can be one of the most painful parts of life. Grief and mourning come in many different stages and it is easy to let emotion consume you during these difficult times. However, it is important to keep God close to your heart instead of pushing Him away.  Remember that you need God now more than ever and He wants you to be happy again despite the loss and heartbreak you may feel.

In addition to losing a loved one yourself, it is also difficult to know how to help someone else who has lost someone close. One way to comfort them is to pray to God that they find peace and comfort in their time of need. With the love and reassurance God can provide, it is possible to ease the pain of those who are hurting. These prayers can help you and your friends or family to cope with the loss of a loved one by asking God to pay close attention to them so they are able to move on.

We Need You

Jesus, please be with my friend reading this prayer. You know every wound, every joy, every fear, every dream. Heal old wounds. Heal new wounds. Be their strength during this critical time. Alleviate every fear. Help us all to see the power of Your resurrection. Give us eyes to see where new life springs in our hearts. We need You Jesus. Amen.

Resurrection and Life

Jesus, console those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Let them be comforted in the remembrance of Your promises. Give to those who mourn, peace in the midst of their tears. You are the Resurrection and the Life! We know and believe this!

Share Our Sorrows

Father, You are a Man of sorrow and acquainted with grief. You know how we feel. We are hurt by our parting from those whom we loved: when we are angry at the loss, when we long for words of comfort, yet find them hard to hear, turn our grief and affliction into hope because of your tenderness towards us in this hour. Amen.

Rescue

Lord Jesus, I know that You are close to those that are broken-hearted and grieving in their soul. I know You rescue those that are crushed in spirit. I ask that you draw near to Your many children who are facing times of sadness and loss and draw each one ever closer into Your precious arms of love and support. Amen.

Embrace and Comfort

O God, who brought us to birth, and in whose arms we die, in our grief and shock, contain and comfort us; embrace us with your love, give us hope in our confusion and grace to let go into new life; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Gentle Grief

Lord, we pray for those who mourn, for parents and children, friends and neighbors. Be gentle with them in their grief. Show them the depths of your love, a glimpse of the kingdom of heaven. Spare them the torment of guilt and despair. Be with them as they mourn. Give them happy and peaceful memories of their loved one. Amen.

Hold Our Hearts

Jesus, we seem to face far too much loss these days. In times like those, we choose to rest our heads on your shoulders as we weep. Lift our heads. Rejuvenate our vision. Bring us back to a place of peace. This world is dark, but we recognize right now, in this moment, that You are glorious light. Please, please shine down on us so we can see You at work. Replace our mourning with dancing. Hold our hands, our hearts, our dreams. Amen.

Time to Rest

Jesus, we want to have a less hectic life. We’re tired. So tired. Life feels like an out of control carnival ride, dipping, careening, swaying. We want to get off and rest! Help us this week to find ways to do just that. Bring peace and quiet where there’s chaos and hollering. May You become our haven, our resting place. Forgive us for giving into worry instead of choosing to give You every single stress. We need time, Jesus. Time to reflect, rest, and rejuvenate. And we trust You to provide it. Amen.
