May 11, 2015
7:40- 8:45pm
Odell home
Attending
Board members: Bruce Odell, Craig Reynolds, Laine VanDyke, Harry Holsinger, Rick Zeller, John McLaren
Neighbor: Chris Farina
Minutes
The minutes for the last MJNA Board meeting, held April 13, were approved.
Treasurer’s Report
The Treasurer reports a current balance of $681.05. The previous balance was $911.27. Credits: 2 cents interest and $10 membership dues. Expenses: $240.24 for the tree project.
Cemetery Lighting
As a deterrent to vandalism and other crime, we want permanent motion-detecting solar-powered lighting in Maplewood Cemetery to replace the temporary lighting installed a couple of years ago. Bruce and Rick will attend a meeting 2pm, Monday May 18th at Maplewood Cemetery to discuss lighting options and placement with lighting designer Mark Schuyler.
Picnic
The picnic is scheduled for Sunday, May 17; rain date Sunday, May 31. For tasking see the minutes for the April meeting. Laine will help Bruce and Eberhard with signs. John will bring eating utensils as well as pizza unless Bruce tells him he’s found enough left over from another picnic.
Locust Ave. Special Speed Zone
City Council is scheduled to vote on the Locust Ave. petition for a $200 minimum fine speed zone on Monday, May 18th. Craig will write Smitty and Ellen with cc to Bruce to remind them of the vote.
Reaction to Newsletter
Bruce reported no responses to our pleas in the newsletter for volunteers to organize children’s activities at the picnic or to join MJNA teams. Harry reported only one household paying dues as a result of the newsletter and is concerned that electronic distribution of the newsletter may cut down on people sending in dues since they have to print out the membership form themselves. We are all concerned that electronic newsletter distribution will miss newcomers to the neighborhood.
Hazel St. calming
Rick reported that NDS performed a traffic study on Hazel with results above the eligibility threshold for traffic calming in volume of traffic, but not in speed. Christine Fisher from NDS came to the neighborhood to study the issues on the street, which include the safety of children traveling to or from the nearby elementary school. She will report back on options.
Other Business
Rick reported that he, Jim Self, and Eberhard went to a presentation last week on Bike and Pedestrian paths. He requested a button activated flashing light where the proposed bike/pedestrian path crosses Locust. Harry said it should be a red, not a yellow, flashing light.
Rick reported that a traffic study done on Lexington in the vicinity of the intersection with Poplar gave results below the eligibility threshold for traffic calming. Neighbors had wanted a 4-way stop because of poor sightlines. Bruce will post the result on the MJNA Facebook page.
Bruce will find out if any progress has been made on the tiny park on the former MJH property.
Next meeting
Monday, June 8, 7:30 pm at a place TBA.
