2021 World Schools Championships (WSC)

Guideline Information, Application and Selection Criteria

Last updated by IRC on 12th Sept 2019

Every 2 years the SSSA organises a team of Scottish schools skiers to represent Scotland at the World Schools Championships (WSC). The championship moves to a different location on each occasion, lasts for one week, and offers competitions in the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Cross Country disciplines.

Being a "non alpine nation" Scotland is permitted to take a team of pupils selected from multiple schools. (Alpine nations must select teams from a single school)

The team comprises U18 & U16 ski categories as defined by ISF:-

5 x male U18 alpine racers

(Category 2 - Year of Birth 2004/2003 - 17/18 years old on 31st December 2021)

SELECTION

Teams will be selected by a panel of 7-10 coaches, representing different regions, clubs and athlete groups across Scotland.

Only athletes that have applied using the online application form will be considered for selection by the panel.

Selection Process Steps and Timescales:

  1. REVIEW: The panel will review the list of applicants between 1st and 5th Sept 2019
  2. NOMINATION: Using the selection criteria detailed below, each selector on the panel will then independently select what they consider to be the 5 best candidates (plus one reserve) for each age/gender team, and nominate them to the panel 48 hours before the selection meeting.
  3. SELECTION MEETING: The selection meeting will take place on 7th Sept 2020. At this meeting the panel will consider all nominated names, and using the same selection criteria below, jointly select the teams.
  4. NOTIFICATION: Successful applicants will be contacted confidentially as soon after the selection meeting as possible and have 48 hours to accept or decline their place. Should they decline the place, it will be offered to the reserve.
  5. ANNOUNCEMENT: The teams will be publicly announced as early as possible after 11th September but no later than 15th Sept 2020.

Criteria:

Selection is based upon an athlete’s performances at seeded Slalom and GS events. Selectors will take into consideration the following:-

  • FIS points (Slalom + GS)
  • BASS Points (Slalom + GS)
  • Head to head race results
  • Coaches reports

In particular, athletes at similar levels will have their results scrutinised and head to head comparisons made to determine the stronger candidate, best suited to both disciplines. For clarity, the number of events attended is not a selection criteria.

Selectors will, at all times, carefully consider athletes’ suitability to be a team member, justifying to themselves that the athlete will perform to their highest standards and they will be an ambassador for the Scottish Schools’ Snowsports Association, their own school, their relatives and most importantly themselves.

Selection Decision & Meeting Minutes:

All decisions at the selection meeting will be FINAL and succinctly, selection is not negotiable. Each selection decision will be supported by written evidence of the comparisons made, data considered and decision process. The panel decision will be final and not open for appeal or challenge, however if requested, information and supporting evidence of decisions can be made available to unsuccessful applicants should it be requested.

Prior to the final decision, team selections will not be discussed in any way outside the selection panel. Conversations with the individual selectors, committee members or anyone with influence over the decision in any form will not take place.

Exclusion of connected persons: Any selectors on the panel that have a family member who has applied to the WST will not be permitted to offer nominations or be involved in discussions of that age/gender category.

We hope everyone involved understands the need to set out clear criteria.
