4.1. Hot potato.
T: Look, this is a potato. It is very hot. You can’t hold it in your hands for a long time. Name a word answering the question and pass it to your friend very quickly.
- Your friend invites you to his/her birthday party. What can you put on?
- What can you give him or her as a present?
- What is there on the table? What will you eat?
4.2. Fill the board.
T: Now tell me what words come to your mind when you hear the words “a birthday party”? I will write down your words and phrases on the blackboard. You can name nouns, verbs, adjectives and prepositions. Now that we have a lot of words on the blackboard, make up sentences using any of them.
5. Speaking.
5.1. Find someone who.
T: Take these slips of paper. Your task is to walk around the classroom and to ask your classmates the questions. Try to remember their answers or write them down. Then you will tell us what you have learnt.
Find someone who:
- has birthday parties every year
- invites a lot of guests
- has a birthday party in the garden
- likes to decorate the garden
- cooks a tasty birthday cake
- takes photos with a camera
- dances and sings at the party
- plays games with the friends.
5.2. Telling a story.
T: Well, Dima’s friend Anna has a birthday.
Where is Dima going?
What is he wearing?
Has he got a present?
What present has he got?
Where will the party be?
What does the garden look like?
What can you see in the garden?
What can the children do at the party?
What can they eat and drink?
Do they like the party?
Now we have a story about Anna’s birthday party. Who is ready to present it?
6. Listening.
T: Not only Dima but many other guests come to Anna’s birthday party. Let’s listen to what they are talking about. While listening do the following tasks:
a) Fill in the missing words.
S: Hello, Alan. Thanks for … (coming).
A: Hi, Susan. Glad to … (see) you.
S: How are you?
A: I am fine, thanks. And you?
S: I’m OK.
A: The … (garden) is beautiful today.
S: Thanks! Is this a … (present) for Anna?
A: Yes, it is. Where is she?
S: Over … (there)! She’s with Sally.
b) Arrange the sentences in the order they come in the dialogue.
A: Wow! That’s a big present. Thank you, Sally… What is it?
A: It’s great. Thanks.
S: It’s a doll. It’s from America.
S: Happy birthday, Anna. This is for you.
c) Put the words in the correct order to make up sentences.
Lyn: Steve. This is Tony. Tony, this is Mr. White, Anna’s father.
Tony: Mr. / hello / White
Mr. White: Hi, Tony. old / you / how / are?
Tony: I’m / next / eight / week.
Mr. White: Really? your / when’s / birthday?
Tony: On / September / of / the sixth.
T: Now read the dialogues in pairs and be ready to role-play them.
7. Reading.
T: So, as you see Anna’s guests are very polite and well-bred. But now we are going to read the text about a very naughty little girl, who comes to a birthday party.
Read the text and choose the best title.
a) A nice party. b) My naughty sister at the birthday party.
c) The best birthday.
There was a little boy who lived in our street. His name was Tom. My little sister liked to play with him. So they often played in our yard and in our garden.
One day Tom came to our house and said to Nancy: ``Please, come to my birthday party. We shall have tea and a big birthday cake.``
``I like birthday cakes, ``said my little sister. She put on her best dress and her white shoes.
When my sister came to the party, she said to Tom’s mother: ``How do you do? I want some birthday cake.``
Tom’s mother laughed and said: ``Soon all the children will come, and then you can have the birthday cake.``
Then the other children came and they all played in the yard. They played hide-and-seek. They sang songs and danced. But my sister didn’t want to play. She didn’t want to dance and to sing. And Tom didn’t want to play.
``I can show you the cake, ``he said.
So they went to the kitchen and there on the table they saw a beautiful birthday cake with chocolate roses on it.
``Oh, I like chocolate roses very much,`` said my little naughty sister. So my sister ate three roses and Tom ate three roses too. They took the roses with their hands and there was chocolate on their hands and on their faces. Then they went into the garden to play with the children.
When Tom’s mother saw them, she was very angry. She told Tom to go to bed and she told my sister to go home.
My sister is not a little girl now, but she doesn’t like chocolate roses even today.
T: Now listen to the statements. Repeat them if they are true and correct them if they are false.
- The boy’s name was Tom.
- My little sister didn’t play with him.
- One day Tom invited Nancy to the birthday party.
- Tom’s mother gave them the cake.
- The children played hopscotch in the garden.
- There were many chocolate roses on the cake.
- Nancy and Tom ate all the roses.
- Tom’s mother was very happy.
