Dear Marczi –

Both your letters reached me here and I hope you received my telegram announcing my arrival on the 14th of this month – we arrived a day late because of the storm – but otherwise everything went well, and I was not seasick – Sea air always does me good. I have hardly had time to organise my letters since I have been here – alongside my work, I am constantly being invited. People like to feel themselves among notable Europeans – I spent Christmas Eve – at the house of my old friend James Speyer,^[1] the famous banker. 45 guests sat down to dinner. Everyone got a present – and afterwards there was dancing

During middle of the dinner he proposed a toast to me, as a distinguished guest from Europe. I went to the opening night at the Opera too. What would interest you, is that the first Broadcasting Company here asked me to talk about the history of portrait painting. I did so – it took 25 minutes with a microphone in front of me – and 70 million people heard it. Things are better here now, although many people whom I knew from before have gone bankrupt – I will paint about 10 portraits. I have finished the first one – a three-quarter length [110594] – of the daughter of the famous Woolworth,^[2] a charming 50-year-old lady. I have painted her daughters before. I will be at their house on Monday, New Year’s Day, for lunch with several other guests – and after lunch – my portrait

will be unveiled – there will be a concert – a lot of other guests will come. Their magnificent palace is on an island – in a village – an hour away. I am planning to be here in N.Y. until the 25th of Jan – or until the end of the month – and then go to Philadelphia for two weeks – again 2 hours away, and there I will paint the two Directors of a large Bank [possibly [6560] and [11275]]– I painted the Chairman last time. I am hoping to return home around the 20th of Feb – then after a few days going to Madeira – to meet Lucy^[3] – from there to Morocco for 2 weeks – and then back –– we will be home by the end of March. Lucy wants to go to Japan for a big trip – it would be nice, but I have huge expenses. I have had three letters from Lucy since I have been here – they took 22 – days to get here – the last letter was dated the 3rd of Dec – so it takes a long time for a

letters to reach me here – I must write to her now – to tell her when I will be in London. So I don’t want to be here long, I just want to earn money to pay the taxes which are due in January – it’s monstrous – but after this I am hoping to paint fewer (portraits) so I can work for myself – because I don’t really want to come here again – I don't like the way things work here – everyone is after money – there no intimacy – everyone is dominated by material concerns. Two months here will be more than enough – I long to be able to work in peace, I have so many expenses at the end of this year – month – and I have lost a lot – just like everyone else – Patrick’s^[4] affairs have not been successful – but only today I heard that Stephen’s^[5] factory is going better and better. Patrick’s dealt with his previous business affairs

very well – and is now a partner and director at Stephen’s factory – this year’s great joy was Paul’s wedding^[6] – we are very fond of his wife – his house is very nice – and in addition – Diana,^[7] Stephen’s lovely wife – is finally expecting a child, due in Easter – poor Henry^[8] – he will feel it deeply, his wife lost a baby prematurely three times – but there is still hope – the boys were all at Henry’s on Christmas Eve – I have donated another canvas to a hospital [6272], whose president is the King’s Household Chamberlain, Lord Cromer.^[9] I could not refuse, today his wife wrote me a beautiful letter and the half-length canvas once again fetched £500 – Did you know that the famous London hospital unanimously elected me honorary governor? So good news has come in from Lucy – and from the boys –

And now I turn to you, old thing, in reply to your two letters I’m sending you back the documents, enclosed – assuming that his son, Charlie is still alive^[10] – Thank you for letting the government have the Görgei [110815] picture. Bárczy will be grateful to you for this. I received a letter – which was sent to me here by Minister Széchenyi – filled with gratitude from Foreign Minister Kánya^[11] for the Apponyi painting – Elza^[12] wrote to me – and thanked me for the jewellery – I am surprised not her two daughters haven’t written – I haven't heard from Szerén since I failed to answer Gyula’s optimistic hope that I would send money for the construction^[13] – Before I left, Siklossy,^[14] the editor of the P.H. [Pesti Hírlap] came to me for lunch – he is a good man – and he brought me his article –

thank you for the catalogue of the municipal exhibition – I might send them something from London later –

I will arrange from here to get 2000 francs to Genshov again – but dear fellow – I do not agree with what you write regarding your son^[15] – I am afraid you’re thinking more of Irma^[16] than of me – I am sure that there are many distressed people from good families in the state-run institution in Pest, and – if you pay a small sum they will give him special nursing care – your financial situation does not allow – you to keep your son in that expensive institution – and so far away from you – If you think Irma is more important – and she certainly thought of me when she knew you couldn’t pay – then don’t count on me, old man – Every month

I’ll send you – and gladly – the 2000 francs, which more than formerly – but you mustn’t press me too hard – I will gladly cover the expenses of bringing him home from Munich – because I know that it will involve complications but it is an impossible situation to keep the boy permanently in a private institution of that kind just because it is what Irma wants –

I leave everything else in your hands – but ultimately I hope you will take my situation into account. You know how I work, how happy I am to do my duty and do everything I can for you, but this is a completely unnecessary situation, which you must solve like a man – I know that in Budapest – they will show more interest in the boy – and in his health, while in Munich it is private and I am [illegible] If you think about it seriously, dear boy, you must admit that I am right

Mindkettő leveledet itt vettem és reméllem sürgönyömet e ho 14éről jelentve érkezésemet megkaptad a vihar miadt egy nappal későbben érkeztünk – De különben minden rendben ment s nem voltam beteg – a tengeri levegő mindig jót tesz nékem, mióta itt vagyok – alig van időm, hogy leveleimet rendezzem – a munka mellett allandoan meg vagyok hiva – az emberek szeretik a nevezetes europaikat köztük tudni – A karácsony estét – régi barátom James Speyer híres bankárnál töltöttem 45 vendég ült le a vacsorához. mindenki ajándékot kapot – s később tancz volt.

N Y-ban – ugy tervezem Jan hó 25éig – vagy végéig leszek – ezután két hétre Philadelphia – 2 órányi távolsag ismét ott egy nagy Bankban fogok festeni ket Directorjukat – az Elnököt már utolsó alkalombol festettem. Reméllem, hogy feb – 20ika körül indulok haza – s néhány nap után Madeirába – ott Lucyval találkozni – onnét Maroccoba 2 hétre – s ezután haza –– március végével otthon leszünk. Lucy egy nagy utat szeretne tenni Japánba – szép lenne de nagy a kiadásaim. Lucytól mióta itt vagyok három levelet kaptam – 22 – napig voltak uton – az utolso levelet Dec 3ikán írta – tehát nagy időig tart míg

levele engem elér – már most kell írnom – mikorra leszek Londonba. Igen, most nem akarok sokáig itt lenni, csak megakarom keresni az adómat – melyet Januárban kell fizetnem – rettenetes – de reméllem hogy ezután kevesebbet fogok (arczképeket) festeni s magamnak dolgozhatok – mert nem igen akarok még egyszer ide jönni – nem szeretem az itteni világot – – mindenki csakis pénz után hajszol – semmi intimitás – csak anyagi érték dominálja az embereket – két hónap itten éppen elegendő lesz – vágyom nyugalmas munkára az idei év – honap végét [illegible] sok kiadásaim voltak – sokat veszitettem – mint mindenki – Patrik ügyei nem sikerültek – de éppen ma hallottam hogy Stephen gyára minden tekintetben jobbra fordul. Kánya külügyminisztertől hálás levelet kaptam az apponyi képér. melyet ide Széchenyi minister utánam küldödt – Elza írt – köszönte az ékszert csodálom hogy nem a két leány nem irt – Szeréntől miután nem válaszoltam a Gyula reményére hogy az építéshez pénzt küldjek – nem hallottam tőlük – Siklosy a P.H. szerkesztője nálam volt ebéden mielőtt elutaztam – derék ember – s a czikkét elhozta –

köszönöm a városi kiállítás catalogusat – lehet hogy később küldök nekik valamit Londonból –

Innét intézkedni fogok – hogy Genshovhoz ismét 2000 frank menjen – de öregem – amit te írtál fiad ügyében ebben nem értek egyet veled – attól félek hogy te többet gondolsz Irmára mint reám – biztos vagyok hogy Pesten az állami intézetben sok jó családból szerencsétlen emberek vannak s hogy ott – ha egy kis összeget fizetsz külön ápolják – a viszonyaid nem engedig – a fiut abban a drága intézetben tartani – s oly távol tőled – Ha azt hiszed hogy Irma fontosabb – aki természetesen mikor reám gondolt – tudva te nem tudsz fizetni.
