To whom it may concern,

At around 1:50 AM on the morning of Sunday, September 19, 2021, the fire alarm went off in New South Hall. Residents and guests were evacuated onto Library Walk, where the police were seen questioning an adult man. Word quickly got around from student to student that the man (who was likely in his late 20’s or 30’s) had made his way into New South, interacted with several students, and was found in a women’s restroom. Other than that, details are hazy. For example, was the fire alarm in Copley Hall around 3:00 AM connected to the incident? A lack of any type of communication surrounding the incident has not only left the student body feeling concerned and neglected, but it has also allowed for rumors to spread. No one knows the truth, and because of that, students excitedly watched the events transpire as the man was cornered in the Village C parking garage and continued to watch the events unfold as he escaped from the police. Not once were students told to shelter in place, nor were they alerted to the fact that an unidentified man found in a women’s restroom was on the run from the police. When information about the events spread, it was through word of mouth rumors. Was the man eventually apprehended? Nobody knows. Are we safe to walk around campus at night? Once again, we have received absolutely zero communication from the administration about anything regarding the incident. From the perspective of the students of the university, as far as the administration is concerned, this event never occurred. Why were we never told to shelter in place? Or if there was no real danger, could we have at least been told that as well? Many of us expected to find an email in our inbox about the event when we woke up this morning, but there has still been no communication. We write the letter to express our concern about the failure to do anything to notify the student body of the threat. We hope that you will improve this system in the future to protect the student body and stop the potential for the unfettered spread of rumors.
