Mike and Amelia Zmigrosky are examples of what makes Southwestern Pennsylvania such a special place to live.  Mike was born in 1914 in Monogah, Forward Township, Allegheny County.  He was the third of four children born to John and Anna Zmigrosky.  Times were tough, and because of the economic situation, Mike was forced to join the work force after the 7th grade.  He first was employed at Affinito’s Blacksmith Shop in Monongahela, Pennsylvania.  He later was able to find employment at Bethlehem Steel Mine 53 in Cokeburg, Pennsylvania.  Coal mining and a belief in the United Mine Workers would become central to Mike’s life.

Meanwhile, Amelia (Bik) Zmigrosky was born in 1917 in Fall River, Massachusetts.  She was the third of six children born to Matthew and Anna Bik.  She attended school until the 10th grade, before finding employment as a seamstress at the I. Schnerrson Sewing Factory.  She worked there for sixteen years.

Their paths crossed on May 28, 1948.  Mike was a trainer for the Curry Vets Soccer Club.  The team was playing for the Eastern championship against a team from Fall River.  They met while dancing at the Fall River Eagles Club.  They were married on June 24, 1950, in Fall River, but chose to return to Monongahela, Pennsylvania to reside.

Upon returning, Mike labored at the Mathies Mine Preparation Plant in Courtney, Pennsylvania until retiring in 1977.  Amelia was a housewife and became a mother twice, having two sons; Paul born in 1952 and Steven born in 1958.  Their two sons are both college graduates and both married.  Paul married Sheila Carnley in June 1977 and they reside in Piano, Texas.  Steven married Colleen O’Neil in September 1990 and they reside in Edgewood, Pennsylvania.  Mike and Amelia are especially proud of their grandson, Matthew born to Paul and Sheila on August 11, 1978.

Over the years the most important things in Mike and Amelia’s lives besides family and friends, have been their Roman Catholic faith, their belief in hard work and fairness, and their dedication to the American system of government.  Their story is common, but also very special, thus we dedicated this tile to you as a remembrance of your lives.
