Bust-length, very slightly to the left and full face to the viewer smiling and wearing a large hat decorated with coloured feathers, a black chemise and a pale wrap just indicated round her shoulders

De László made three portraits of the sitter in 1905, however, he only inscribed and dated one [7418]. The present picture and [7178] were both rejected, the latter remaining in his studio until he used the board for his study portrait of Baron Slatin Pasha [7178]. This portrait was given to the sitter. Lady Johnstone is wearing the studio hat that the artist used in numerous portraits before the First World War; see also the duchesse de Gramont [6550] and Prince Victoria of Battenberg [3481].
