Foreword:
Greetings and welcome to The Isle Lore community!
This document is intended to be a resource to organize the diverse tidbits of lore that this community has gleaned across many years from a variety of sources. If you are new to The Isle or you are an old player returning to the game, some of this lore can be a bit confusing as there have been several distinct phases to The Isle’s development, and some concepts were changed or renamed, while others are outdated and are no longer considered canon. With this in mind, we work to keep this document updated as new information arrives and old information is replaced or reaffirmed. Because this document is organized to aid in accessibility for research and may be in flux due to edits, we have attached this foreword to introduce you to some of the major concepts discussed within.
A quick notice - The Isle’s lore can go very deep. While at first, it seems like a standard Jurassic Park clone, The Isle takes the concept of genetically engineered dinosaurs and explores some very dark questions within this pocket genre of sci-fi.
In this world, an organization known as Apollo Engineering (AE) has created engineered organisms that look and behave like dinosaurs. While they seem superficially similar to real dinosaurs, it is more likely (highly stressed) that these are not simply clones made from old dino DNA, but new creatures that have been made in the image of dinosaurs; Hence why you will never find an “Omniraptor” in a real textbook, why many of the animals are featherless even when the real version had feathers, and why the sizes and weights of various dinosaurs can differ from the best estimates of the paleontological community.
Similarly, the “humans” in this game are not like real humans, which is why they are known as “Generation 2s”. It is believed that they were created to be the “ideal” human body, and this plays into some of the ideas of godhood / god-ego associated with AE. Additionally, there is another type (archetype) of ‘human’ known as “Gen 1” that appears to be a monstrous humanoid that may climb walls but has an unnerving association with an AI (?) entity known as “The Replicator”. Lastly, there are the enigmatic, infamous genetic monstrosities known as “Strains” - modified animals (and humans) with anomalous and bizarre abilities/’quirks’.
With this information in hand, I now release you to browse the rest of this document as you please. Some of the information contained here is fragmentary or unclear, and this is often simply a result of our lack of knowledge (the devs love to drop hints and small ideas, but rarely explain anything in full). We strive to be an open and welcoming community, and as such, we ask that if you have any questions about the lore, please feel free to come talk to us about it, either in the official Isle discord server or in the “Lorecord” community server.

Apollo Engineering:
- A presumed subsidiary of the larger “Apollo” (corporation?). Other known subsidiaries are Apollo Red, Apollo Pharmaceuticals North, and Mercury Beneficial. Apollo Engineering started in/has roots in botany; however, it obtained a lot of money via food (food production/agriculture) and ended up with dinosaurs[1], we don’t know the timeline. The larger “Apollo” is international and so important/widespread/broad that they do not truly have the courtesy of choice regarding having ties to nations around the globe. Plenty of it is public-facing, but Dondi has said, “Show 90% and the other 10% is easy to hide”.

Not everything is kept in one facility, and it is entirely likely that not all the assets will exist or have ever existed on the same island.

- AE might have some communication issues (some people, likely higher ups, potentially going off-programming). Dondi quotes: “The beast has many heads and many limbs. It goes without saying not every head knows everything about every project.”[3]

General Terms / Lore Terms:
Generic terms not affiliated with a specific or multiple locations/facilities.
Known Islands & Topical Locations & Sites:
Gateway: The name given to the in-game map, which is the unofficial name in lore. It is also the ‘gateway’ to Tartarus.
The Reserve: An undefined Hunting Lodge island that allows people to ‘hunt’; most of the island is for hunting in a natural environment, with a (likely giant) fence line protecting the “commercial area” of the island.
Tartarus: A theorized massive holding facility and/or creation facility for strains[15] and other creations, such as The Matriarch in Legacy. Has been used as a threat as a holding area for employees who betray company secrets or access restricted documents.
Archive 7: (Unknown Size and Location) A presumed individual (or more) Storage Unit/Drive used for ‘archival’ purposes. It is likely ‘fully digital’, like a computer drive. It is known to include materials, like unaltered footage or migrational data, and evaluations, like full annotated videos. Hence, it likely has a large amount of storage.

Note the use of Grid Coordinates:
Same and/or most ‘human buildings’ (on the surface of Gateway) have some sort of Grid Coordinate, i.e. K15. However (As seen in the AUGUSTUS and File Recovery Video), Apollo Engineering seem to refer to these locational coordinates with 2 ‘sections’ instead of 1: GW_## instead of just K15.
Gateway:
G.U.T.S./GUTS: A large underground system of tunnels and underground buildings (subsections), likely primarily used as a method of moving around things with minimal dinosaur-interaction; ‘GUTS stops the moment you enter the topside open space. The metro itself is not part of GUTS [18]. There is no current OFFICIALLY known meaning to its acronym besides “Generic Underground Transportation System”, an unofficial meaning by Dondi.
Perimeter/The Atrium[19]: The name of the giant “Dome” (can also be referred to as a “Hexadome”) on Gateway. Little is known about its use. Contains several unfinished/concept art entrances, and currently has two large pipes that go into and under the Swamp.
DTA: Meaning ‘Dinosaur Transportation Area’ (or Dockyard Transportation Area[20]), they are large buildings at certain facilities made to ‘temporarily house various animals that would have been moved to or from an island.’
Ranger Stations[21]: Small human bases/areas, with a given map designation around Gateway, which serve as possible outposts for AE around the island.
Water Access Facility: No known name. Located at the grid coordinate F11, there is an unknown facility/building built into a cliff-side, which contains a broken ‘giant gated pool’ and several buoys outside. Nothing is known of its purpose at the moment, besides that it has a DTA built into it that isn’t accessible.
South Plains Tri-Enclosure: Located at the southernmost point of South Plains. Appears to be a Semi-Aquatic Species Containment Area. Contains three walled enclosures, each is mostly filled with sand, with some grass - the sand areas contain large metal drains. Also has two DTAs and a small roofed dock/harbor.
LAB IX: A large four-storied 100m by ~50m complex. It is, most importantly a laboratory. Described as a “Lab hub” & “necropsy area”- there are covered dead bodies still there. May contain an armory and testing rooms, as the previous LAB IX (GUTS variant) was supposedly going to have.
Unknown Location:
The TANKS[27]: The location/lab/facility where Ben is stored in a vat/tank. No known location.
IMPORTANT - GUTS has been delayed due to game engine issues and may not come in-game. Whether or not they are in-lore is unknown, as of this moment.
To note, as of 2025, we only know about GUTS’ presence at Gateway. This may change.
(The/A) Hub: a “large layout composed of one main room and several smaller side areas, supporting multiple paths either through the main area or via smaller side doors”
The World Around:
The Seaworld: “An attempt to slow and/or reverse climate change, via introducing megaflora to the oceans, ended with a containment leak which led to massive crustaceans”.[29]
AE/Apollo International Relations: About whom Apollo and/or Apollo Engineering works with, we know “When you play with what they play with, you do not get the courtesy of choice[30]”
The Poultry Riots: Some social or economic event in the world.
The Replicator:
A collection of systems utilised and required to create/synthesise/produce life (one such system is the TOMB), presumably made by AE, watches through cameras, served by Gen1s[31], in which they can sacrifice things to her for a “reward”. Possibly sentient. Symbolized as a camera in both (old) Evrima and Legacy art.
Subsystems/Systems of The Replicator

Strains:
Strain Creation: Strain testing likely all occurred at one location (occurring at Tartarus in Legacy), and is not directly tied to the base creatures that the strain is applied to.
Hyperendocrin (Type-H): Significantly larger, stronger, and more dangerous than normal. Increased metabolism leads to inevitable starvation. Armored appearance.
Neurotenic (Type-N): Potentially can interact with the electromagnetic spectrum (as seen with Echidna/Neurotenic Mastermind). The NHJ (event) is linked to Neurotenics; however, to what degree? We are uncertain. However, IN LEGACY, expelled bio-materials that, when in contact with a living foreign body, were dangerous.
Tissoplastic (Type-T): Has better regeneration and can regenerate lost/destroyed limbs.
Strain Plants:
Metallivore: A metallic vine that grows over and consumes metal, eventually covering and maintaining the shape of things it has consumed, similar to strangler fig trees. Forms occasional leafy “knots” periodically along main roots/rootlike structures..
Mendys: A carnivorous plant with corms or spuds that uses clawlike thorns at each stem node to capture and kill prey. Its flowers change color just before it strikes, and it grows like ivy (potentially mimicking it to lull potential prey into a false sense of security). The name may translate to “bad liar” as a compound word of Latin and Greek origin, or relate to whoever created this Strain.
Razorbark: Essentially ‘living barbed wire’, sporting only heavily thorned branches and twigs with no/a lack of leaves. It can attach itself to almost anywhere within reason via little graspers that it uses to adhere to walls or other not-so-upright surfaces, which sprout from the base of a clump.
ArborBurst /ArbourBurst Redwood:[33] From what we can see from artworks, the ‘ArborBursts’ have a ‘burst’ period containing extreme growth and a more armoured appearance with a unique bark-appearance[34]. It is unclear if ArborBurst could refer to a parasitic plant that sprouts out and mimics certain traits of a host plant, if “ArborBurst Redwoods” are a modified type of redwood or ‘other’.
Known Asset Types/Archetypes:
Dinosaurs / Omnisaur (?)[35]: Presumably synthetically-created creatures that take the physical mantle of Dinosaurs, albeit with some changes - existing some ‘dinosaurs’ that may have never existed or physically looked like what they did in the real world. We know that ‘They're unfortunate and necessary’ (quote by Dondi) as referred to earlier in the document.
Generation 1 (Gen1s): Began as a retaliatory product by AE as an overengineered answer to
the question of, “What if something hits AE?[36]”, and are an effective deterrent. They are approx. 7ft tall, hairless, very good at climbing. Gen1s are aware that the Replicator made it and serve said Replicator. It is also not just a moniker for ‘one thing’ being that there are multiple “subclasses” for Gen1s. What Gen 1s are can vary wildly, and may be created for different reasons.
Generation 2 (Gen2s): The second currently known project of human creation by AE. A more human experiment after the creation of Gen 1, containing a “Greek-God Physique”. We are unsure of when or where they were created.
Eyeless / NHS (?)[38]: Humanoids similar to Gen 1, missing their eyes, possibly a slightly different size. Described, not confirmed, as Gen 1.5.
Named Assets:
The descriptor word “SYNTH” (such as SYNTH.003, for SHIRLEY) is used as an in-house shorthand when referring to actual names.[39] Thus, creatures with the “-S” identifier are SYNTHs.

Known & Named Assets — SYNTH & Natural Born
HRS.12-S.174 [AUGUSTUS] (v0.1.2):. An entombed Herrerasaurus and the first and only original documented Herrerasaurus to climb. After this discovery, 174 [AUGUSTUS] was relocated to OLYMPUS, selected by management, and his template was established as the base of the following Herrerasaurus development. It was observed that all offspring (natural and replications) showcased AUGUSTUS’ behavioural mutation to climb.
TYR.12-S.003 [SHIRLEY][41]: A Tyrannosaurus Rex within Gateway. Anomalous[42] traits include being exceptionally large and vicious.
TYR.12-S.00? [DEAN]: A Tyrannosaurus Rex within Gateway. Anomalous traits include being physically impeded, but beyond standard Rex intelligence.
TREX.10-S.001 [INTRUDER] (v3.1.2):[43] A Tyrannosaurus Rex within Gateway and the first documented specimen to produce frequencies in the infrasound range - potential atavism - which causes mass multispecies distress in the local area of its calls and disruption to camera equipment.
OMNI.12-051.788.004 [DAKOTA][44]: An Omniraptor who produced rally and panicked vocalizations via [INTRUDER] infrasound calls.
STEG.12-S.012 [SALT] (v3.1.1): A saltrock-colored Stegosaurus that typically patrols between various zones rich in natural salt licks; historically continued this behavior even when stressed. Was observed travelling alongside 032 [ATLAS]’s immediate family, unique behavior marked under “Ref. M-PAK”, and later was observed alongside 002 [DUKE] after the passing of ATLAS.
032 [ATLAS] (v2.1.5): A deceased triceratops on Gateway and may potentially be a SYNTH (no known full ID/designation). Sired 002 [DUKE] and has been observed, like DUKE, to have unique and more emotive social behaviors, including: Positing himself between DUKE and a lake against a Deinosuchus, allowing travel with Stegosaurus 012 [SALT] (Marked under Ref. M-PAK), and non-lethally subduing a diabloceratops to defend DUKE. ATLAS peacefully died within Gateway’s south swamp.
TRIKE.032-037.002 [DUKE] (v2.1.5): A triceratops on Gateway and is the offspring of 032 [ATLAS]. A majority of DUKE's lifecycle was observed in Triceratops Injection # █ (v2.1.5). Sparred against an unknown Diabloceratops and was ‘saved’ by ATLAS, who non-lethally subdued it. DUKE accompanied ATLAS' final moments before he died, remaining with the body and sleeping beside it throughout the night. Final observable moments include guarding the remains of ATLAS, leaving after hearing stegosaur vocalizations and living aside 012 [SALT] within the delta region.
TRIKE.037-034.001 [TAZ] (v2.1.5)]: A triceratops on Gateway who was observed engaged with 003 [SLATE] and pushed him out of a feeding area of fellow Trikes. Seems to share the same biological parent, likely their mother, with 002 [DUKE]: 037 (no known name).
DBL.171-157.003 [SLATE]: A diabloceratops on Gateway. Observed in engagement with 001 [SLATE], who had been pushed out of a feeding area.
006 [BARON] (v3.1.1): A Tyrannosaurus Rex that had been injected into Gateway and is the parent of [BOOG] and [PEEPS]. It was observed carrying a crippled young Trike for its young to practice hunting before devouring. This specimen may be able to produce infrasound.
004 [BOOG]: A Tyrannosaurus Rex, only observed in its Juvie state. Offspring of 006 [BARON]
001 [PEEPS]: A Tyrannosaurus Rex, only observed in its Juvie state. Offspring of 006 [BARON]
Ben: A blue and spotted dilophosaurus with no tail, which is kept in a vat in The TANKS
The Matriarch: A rapidly evolving creature that can intake biomass and reproduce certain physical properties. It is linked with the Tissoplastics, but not the same. Possibly a similar issue to Hyperendocrin, where it cannot maintain its size when fully grown.
Reaper: A Humanoid Tissoplastic strain, most likely Gen 1 or 2.[45]
Colossus: A Humanoid Hyperendocrin strain, most likely Gen 1 or 2
Echidna: Also known as the Neurotenic Mastermind and The Mother of Cannibals[46]. A humanoid Neurotenic strain, most likely Gen 1 or 2. Able to perfectly replicate the voice of a human and transmit it out to lure in unsuspecting humans. Was known for a close relationship with The Eyeless/Cannibals in Legacy.

Assorted Chipped Diabloceratops: Result of Injection #2 of Generation 36 (F36) of Diabloceratops to Gateway, two juvenile Diabloceratops nested.

Omniraptor: Nothing is known about why this creature is; however, it uses the pre-existing Utahraptor model. Name translates to “All Raptor” / “All bird of prey” (if you translate “Raptor”)
