Theme: Russian Propaganda for Russians is different

Based on Euromaidan Press article “Seven Strategies of Domestic Russian Propaganda” http://euromaidanpress.com/2015/10/05/seven-strategies-of-domestic-russian-propaganda/

Short Description:

See how Russian media short-circuits viewers’ critical thinking skills on Russia’s domestic TV channels.

1. Russian propaganda for Russians at home is different from Russian propaganda for the rest of the world.

2. Though both types of propaganda try to weaken people’s critical thinking, they are used for different purposes..

3. For foreigners, Russian propaganda emphasizes moral equivalence. People are usually told that Russia’s leaders are “just as bad” as the leaders in western countries.

4. Within Russia, though, propaganda usually focuses on the spectre of an enemy.

5. The ultimate values are not truth or falsehood, better or worse, but: us and them.

6. Russian propaganda is very clear about who the enemy is: The United States

7. This enemy is everywhere. Anyone who disagrees with Russia is presented as an “American puppet”

8. A Russian opposition leader? An American puppet, (potential clip: https://youtu.be/-ZDdDnu_lm0)

9.Are you a European who opposes the murder of dissidents in Russia? You are an American agent.

10. Of course, Ukrainians who are just defending their country from Russian aggression are also presented as American puppets (suggest clips: https://youtu.be/if0eXbIprnw?t=1m4 )

11. The “ultimate enemy” is responsible for all of Russia’s problems.

12. This not only explains the source of these problems, but also gives Russians a sense of purpose and involvement in history. They get to feel that they are a brave people fighting against the evil global superpower.

13. Vladimir Putin is presented as the only leader capable of leading Russia against this huge threat.

14. This propaganda is already laying the groundwork to prepare the Russian people for wartime hardships.

15. These hardships might be brought about because of economic mismanagement or a diplomatic reaction to Putin’s aggression, or even the Russian government’s sanctions that affect mostly their own people, but they are presented as the work of the evil foreign enemy.

16. As an added plus, the unity this war mentality creates in the Russian population gives foreigners the impression that Russia is united behind their wartime leader.

17. So far, this propaganda seems to be very effective, but it relies on the idea of war. The enemy must always be bad, the enemy must continually hatch new plots to destroy Russia that must be stopped by the leader.

18. Putin’s own popularity and this unity in general ultimately depends on the constant threat of war. He cannot stop the war propaganda, even if war is bad for Russia and the world.

This video uses real examples from Russian media to show how Russia is manipulating its own people. This will help us understand why everyday Russians believe the things they do, and also see through the disinformation disseminated by Russian media outlets.

QUOTE:

“...the word, camera, photograph, internet, and information generally became one more type of weapon, one arm of the armed forces…”

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s Minister of Defense

Russia:

*militarized authoritarian state

*no freedom of the media

Russia’s Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu onced called mass media “another arm of the armed forces,”

In states like Russia, this is definitely the case. Russia is a militarized authoritarian state with no real media freedom.

2. There are two kinds of Russian propaganda, Propaganda for Russians and propaganda for foreigners. Though both types of propaganda try to weaken people’s critical thinking, they are used for different purposes..

Two speakers of tv-sets with logos “russia today” and “lifenews” on russian border.

TV screen broadcasts different messages to Russia-not Russia

Russian media broadcasts 2 types of propaganda.

All propaganda tries to weaken people’s critical thinking, but Russian propaganda for Russians is different than Russian propaganda for foreigners.

3. For foreigners, Russian propaganda emphasizes moral equivalence. People are usually told that Russia is “no worse” western countries.

When Russia tries to propagandize foreigners, thеy usually emphasize that Russia is “no worse” than western countries.

4. Within Russia, though, propaganda usually focuses on the spectre of an enemy.

A silhouette of an enemy with a knife and a crosshairs on it

Propaganda made for Russians, however, usually focuses on the spectre of an enemy.

5. The ultimate values are not truth or falsehood, better or worse, but: us and them.

This enemy is ultimately responsible for all internal problems

6. Russian propaganda is very clear about who the enemy is: The United States.

9a. What does America want? Russians are told America is trying to destroy Russia, its last remaining opponent

10. Of course, Ukrainians who are just defending their country from Russian aggression are certainly American puppets

 (suggest clips: https://youtu.be/if0eXbIprnw?t=1m4 )

10. Of course, Ukrainians who are just defending their country from Russian aggression are always puppets in some American scheme.

Russian television  carried many stories about US troops on the ground in Donbass

Kyrgyz, a mercenary that came to fight ”fascists” in Russia’s puppet “Luhansk People’s Republic” in Donbas, left after realizing it was all propaganda

http://euromaidanpress.com/2015/03/20/misled-by-russian-propaganda-kyrgyz-mercenary-leaves-separatists-ranks/

Russian Propaganda has recruited people to come kill Ukrainians in Donbas alongside the Russian army.

After watching Russian coverage of events in Ukraine, this man came to fight "fascists" committing genocide in Donbas. After 6 months he left without finding any.

11. The “ultimate enemy” is responsible for almost every problem.

enemy appears on screen again, menacing

12. Very useful to explain your own failures, but not only. Russians  are given a sense of purpose and involvement in history. They get to feel that they are a brave people fighting against the evil global superpower.

(suggestion - slideshow in a class showing the french flag against russia, then the german flag, then the nazi flag, then the american flag)

Russians are told that they are brave people fighting against the evil global superpower.

13. Vladimir Putin is presented as the only leader capable of leading Russia against this huge threat

superhero Putin fighting the enemy. Maybe the enemy looks scared and then putin shoots at him

13. Vladimir Putin is presented as the only leader capable of leading Russia against this huge threat

14. This propaganda is already laying the groundwork to prepare the Russian people for wartime hardships.

(suggested: things change. The television turns into an old television. Chairs turn into stools. Clothes on the people watching get worse.)

Russians are now ready to accept any deprivation in order to avoid war, so large does this threat seem.

15. These hardships might be brought about because of economic mismanagement or a diplomatic reaction to Putin’s aggression, or even the Russian government’s sanctions that affect mostly their own people, but they are presented as the work of the evil foreign enemy.

(beginning?) (at the end, clips of destroying cheese, maybe animation etc.)

WAR PROPAGANDA in Russia:

  1. undermines critical thinking,
  2. consolidates society around a military leader
  3. explains the hardships of an economic crisis.

That is why the idea of war is the main instrument of influence in contemporary Russia: it undermines critical thinking, consolidates society around a military leader, and explains the hardships of an economic crisis.

16. As an added plus, the unity this war mentality creates in the Russian population gives foreigners the impression that Russia is united behind their wartime leader.

putin’s rating

The Kremlin is now dependent on war and propaganda for the survival of its regime

17. So far, this propaganda seems to be very effective, but it relies on the idea of war. The enemy must always be bad, the enemy must continually hatch new plots to destroy Russia that must be stopped by the leader.

enemy again, killed, comes back

At the end: how about we show that this is serious by providing facts such as:
Russia:

Area: 11% of world’s landmass

8000 nuclear warheads

(#1 in the world, after USA and France)

Population: 150 million people

geared for war by Russian propaganda

18. Putin’s own popularity and this unity in general ultimately depends on the constant threat of war. He cannot stop the war propaganda, even if war is bad for Russia and the world.
