How does the director of Peaky Blinders use camera angles and mise en scene to establish expectation and character?

The director of peaky blinders use Mise en scene to establish the main characters that we see in the series. One of the ways he does this is with a contrasting colour palette. The characters are normally dressed in dark colours with big coats and hats with the razor blades in to give the audience the impression that they are hard and mean people that don’t mess around then the background colour in the image above with the flames and orange glow implies to the view of a hell like area around them which further shows them to be mean characters. Furthermore, as you can see in the photo, The character on the far left has a cocktail stick in his mouth that he likes to chew because it portrays him as a thug like character that likes to cause pain. In addition to this the fact that their caps are all pulled down so it almost covers their eyes shows that they are quite dark and mysterious people.

One of the features that the director uses is to film them walking with the 3 main characters in a triangle formation (dotted lines) to show their power but also to show the hierarchy of the group. The leader of the group is the one walking in the middle so it shows him as ever so slightly in front of the other two. But the three clearly in front of the others behind them to convey their dominance. Also the camera is slightly looking up towards them to show they’re power over us in this scene.

As we see from this image they have filmed it from behind to give us the idea that we are walking with them. Like in the last image, they have used very dark colours for the characters outfits to show that they are a violent and menacing group then to add, the fire in the background to create a hellish theme to give contrast to the scene. So we get the impression that everything is fine at the moment but there is going to be or could be some violence involved. The use of bystanders in this scene is also important because it adds to the sense of power created because they all seem to be standing away on the sides as if they know that they could be beaten if they walked in the way of them.
