This week we learned about the Alamo. We did all our homework in class because I know they need this week to work on their science project. If they didn’t finish then here is the link to the print outs.

Week 26 April 10, 2017
For the end of year project I am making it optional for this age. You can dress up as the person you did your biography summary on. Make sure you know about your person so when people ask you questions about your person you know the answers or can give them info.
This week in class we learned about the underground railroad and the trail of tears.
We watched these videos in class.
We played a game of flashlight tag where one was the hunter and the others were runaway slaves.
They did a worksheet in class and learned about the Indian Removal Act using this powerpoint.

Map Work
1. Find the Oklahoma Territory and outline it in brown.
2. Lightly color the areas of Native Americans in green. (These areas are lightly shaded on your map.)
3. The government forced Native American tribes to move to the Oklahoma Territory. Trace the dotted lines of the trails of the Chickasaw, Choctaw and Sauk Fox in brown.
4. The Creeks refused to go! But the government finally forced them to move. Color this dotted line in orange.
5. The Seminoles and Cherokee fought the hardest. The Seminoles fought for seven years before they were driven out. Soldiers forced the Cherokee to march during the winter—an event that would one day be known as the Trail of Tears. Trace both of these lines in blue. Then write Trail of Tears along the top of the Cherokee trail.
6. Nat Turner’s slave rebellion took place in VA. Outline the state of Virginia in black.

We created our own inventions. We divided into groups and worked together in an assembly line.

Book summary will be due April 3 and the end of the year project will be due on April 24. To make this easier please choose a biography that really interests you so that your end of year project can be on the same person.

1. Find the MIssissippi River, It begins in the Northwest Territory and flows south to the Gulf of Mexico. Trace the river in blue.
2. The U.S. added three territories to its land. Find the Indiana Territory, the Mississippi Territory, and the Northwest Territory and color them lightly in red. (Note the western border of the Northwest Territory is the MIssissippi River.)
3. President Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon in 1803. Look at the size of the territory! Outline the territory in green.
4. Find St. Louis. This is where Lewis and Clark began their journey. Trace Lewis and Clark’s journey to the Pacific in orange.
5. You’ve already traced their journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. But Lewis and Clark stopped for the first winter at a Mandan Village. Find the village and draw and orange box around it.
6. Trace Lewis and Clark’s route back from the west in orange.
7. Fort Wayne was the capital of Indiana. William Henry Harrison marched his troops down from Fr. Wayne to Prophetstown. Draw and arrow from Ft. Wayne to Prophetstown.

Directions:
1. Turn the graph paper horizontally (11” x 8”). Write the following coded message on the paper, one letter per graph
square. Leave at least three spaces between lines.

2. In order to code the message, you need a key word. Jefferson and Lewis used the key word “artichokes,” so we will
use the same. Write “artichokes” over the coded message (you should end up writing the word six times.” Write the
“a” in artichokes over the first coded letter, “j.” Then the write the “r” in artichokes over the second coded letter, “t.”
Continue this process until you reach the end of the coded message (you’ll write “artichokes” several times). This part has all been done for you start on 3 to decode.
3. Now you have “pairs” of letters. You are ready to use the cipher. Your first pair of letters is “a, j.” Look at the top
horizontal row of letters. Put your finger on the “a” (from artichokes) in that row. Now run your finger down the
column of letters BENEATH that “a” until you get to the letter “j.” Now run your finger horizontally to the column on
the far left of the page. The letter in the far left column, in line with the “j,” is “i.” “I” is the first letter in the decoded
message. Write it above the letter pair on your graph paper. Repeat this process for all the letter pairs.
4. Now you have the decoded message without capitalization, punctuation, or spaces. See if you can figure out where

This week in class we learned about the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Constitutional Convention.
I sent home puzzles to help memorize the Preamble and Cootie Catchers to review the Bill of Rights. We also made a folder book of the Bill of Rights. We learned some vocabulary words. Preamble, Framer, and Amendment.

Week 16 January 23, 2017
Your next book summary is due February 13, 2017. It will be for a non fiction (not a biography) book. I am having a hard time with a non fiction that is not a biography so if you can’t find one that isn’t a biography is fine. Here is the link to the project. Just know that the next book summary is a biography and will tie into the end of year project so maybe save your favorite for that one.
IMPORTANT NOTE: My computer had to be sent off to be fixed so the sheet to help answer the questions for the page 37 mini books is on it. Please just answer the best you can. You can search for the answers if they aren’t in the book. I am very sorry. Hopefully it will be back soon and I can have all my files back.

Have a wonderful Christmas break. I will miss you all.

Your Historical Fiction book summary is due next week. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET!
Please be reading your book. Fiction book project Please remember your book needs to be from this years time period in history. 1607-1849. Do all your writing and coloring before cutting them out. It makes it much easier. This link has Examples. On circle 8 you only need one of each connection. One text to text, one text to self and one text to world.
This how the book relates to each of these. Text to text can be another book or movie or play you have seen. Here is an alternate link if you can’t print the other.
It has come to my attention that some are having trouble printing the sheets for this. I will work on this later today and try to fix that. I will also tweak the directions as a few do not fit with what the student needs. Please bear with me as I am not feeling well and things are taking longer than I would like.
On circle 4 please do not have your child try to write 3 paragraphs. Just have them tell about the story. Please have your child work at their level. This a generic template I pulled off the web, our class is not their class and you are their teacher. Have fun with it.

We did a witch hunt by asking questions of each student to see who qualified at a “witch”. They then got to accuse who was the witch.

Print Slavery and crops page. Fold in half (hotdog fold) trim edges so it fits as much as possible in your notebook, page 8. Answer the questions on the inside. On the front draw a picture of what you think a plantation would look like and choose a crop for the garden and draw it.
Cut out mini books tell the difference between slavery and indentured servant, fold and glue on page 9 of notebook.
Print page and trim so it fits in your notebook, 10. You can cut the banner off and glue it separately. Please answer the questions on the page.
Print the 13 colonies map, cut it out and fill in the names of all of the colonies. Glue to page 11 in your notebook.

I handed out packets today to hopefully every one. It is the same as this page and the link here. The link has pictures of the box so you can see how a finished one is put together. PLEASE let me know if you have any questions at all. This is due October 10th.
Biography book report
Here is the link to the project for the biography book report.
Please follow the directions below. This link will be on your google document.
- Follow the directions on what should be written in the boxes.
- Follow cutting, folding and gluing directions.
- There are extra templates in the packet so you can organize your thoughts before you do the final box.
- I found that cardstock works best. You can either print on cardstock or glue the templates on cardstock. Paper also works it’s just a bit harder to keep the lid on the box.
- Make it colorful.
- Please make sure your name is on the project and the name of the person is on the top.
- There are pictures for instructions and I will have an example for you to see.
- You are welcome to either draw or print pictures of your person.
Grading Rubric
Each inside flap is worth 5 point X 8 for a total of 40
Name is worth 2 points
Outside box side pictures worth 2 point total
Colorful 4 points
Top of box worth 2 points
Total= 50 points

Please print these pages.
Use either the top of the page and write facts about the Pilgrims and draw or print a picture or the bottom and make a comic strip about the Pilgrims. It can be about any part of their lives. Color, cut out and glue to the top of page 5
1-2nd grade use the top to draw a picture of an event in Squanto’s life. Cut it out along with the picture of Squanto color and glue to the bottom of page 5.
3-4th grade use the bottom half of the page to write some important facts of Squanto’s life. Color and glue to the bottom of page 5.
Your child should have a copy of the Mayflower Compact I sent home with them. Please have them do as the directions say and then cut out just the document and glue to page 6.
Please print the second page is The Manhattan Letter. Cut around just the words and glue to page 7. Sign with Pieter Schagan’s name. (He signed P. Schagan)
Then around the outside margins draw or print pictures of the riches mentioned in the letter.
Manhattan Letter Mine looks different than the one I sent home so don’t worry about that. You only need the the second page of this print out.

Have you picked a biography for your book summary yet? Please do that soon it is due on October 10th I will be sending home packets for it next week.
This week I sent home research paper packets. If your child did not get home with one please let me know. Notice the due dates on the pages that need to be turned in. There is one due on October 3rd. There is also a page for the parent to sign and turn in.
This week we learned about Jamestown, John Smith and Pocahontas.

Cut out the where in the world is Jamestown map and booklet. Fold in half so that Where in the world is Jamestown? is on the front. Mark Jamestown on the map of VA and glue into booklet. Add color and glue into your notebook on page 3.
Cut out map and banner. Mark Pocahontas journey to Europe on the map. color and glue into your notebook on page 4. Underneath in your notebook write at least 3 facts about Pocahontas.

Start thinking about what biography you would like to do for your book summary.
In class we watched this video about Guy Fawkes
We made straw rockets to represent fireworks they set off on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day.
We also played a game about The Gunpowder plot to help them understand it better.
Below is the notebook work.

Please add color to your pages. Remember not adding color will lower your points for your notebook. Also it is much easier to write and color on the pages before you glue them in. Elmers glue All is the best but any glue will work. Please use glue sparingly as the pages start to stick together and all when you use too much.
