‘Artists and their Work. Reunion at Liver Sketching Club’, Liverpool Daily Post and Mercury, 27 November 1924
The Liver Sketching Club’s exhibition was visited yesterday, at No. 11, Dale street, by Alderman John Lea and his co-members of the Liverpool Corporation Arts Sub-Committee. The chairman of the Free Libraries, Museums, and Arts Committee (Alderman H. A. Cole) was also present, together with representatives of the Royal Academy (Mr. Campbell Taylor, A.R.A.), the Liverpool Academy (Mr. H. Hyme), the Liverpool School of Art (Mr. William C. Penn), the Walker Art Gallery (Mr. A. T. Quigley), and the following past presidents of the Liver Club: Messrs. R. Fowler, D. Woodlock, A. E. Brockbank, F. T. Copnall, Sam J. M. Brown, J. A. A. Berrie, and Josh Fisher. In the absence of the present president (Mr. John D. Wright) Mr. S. I. Hertford (vice-president) presided during the introductory speeches.
A Good Record.
The club was founded, in Clayton square, fifty-three years ago, and has never omitted having an annual exhibition. From pictures sold it has distributed over £11,000 to the members. Mr. Woodlock was one of the earliest members, and J. S. Morland the first president.
Alderman Lea expressed the hope that the bringing together of representatives of all the art institutions of Liverpool would conduce to co-operation, as the Liver Club had done, in the advancement of the art interests of the city. He announced that on Saturday the Autumn Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery would be visited by a famous portrait painter, Mr. Philip A. de Laszlo.
A conversazione succeeded the speeches and inspection. Following the Lord Mayor’s example, Alderman Lea purchased a picture by Miss Laura Steinforth. A final evening reunion was fixed for December 2nd.
