Dear Marczi,

I got your nice long letter of the 10th June and it is only now that I have found the time to reply: “business” things first – I enclose a copy of the letter from the Erlangers bank people,^[1] from which you will see that 198 marks have been paid to the sanatorium in Munich – for Michel^[2] – I hope you got an acknowledgement from them. Since I can’t receive interest in this country on my German stocks I will have the money sent there instead from now on. I will send the 2000 francs to Genshov at the end of this month. It is certainly gloomy, what you say about your losses – I too lost half my savings – after the American crash – money scraped together and saved, it would have been a fortune if the crash hadn’t happened – if I could afford it, I would only paint for myself nowadays – but thank the Lord – I have the means of earning a living – whereas other people are very hard up, both here and abroad – I am continually being approached by letter, particularly by Hungarians – people who want to come here – hanging round my neck – on the pretext of being my pupils. I refuse them all –

all they do is make things awkward – or actively do damage if they can –

I heard from Bárczy once shortly after we got back but it has now been almost two months since I’ve heard a word. He doesn’t reply, not even to the telegram I sent – He got what he wanted out of me and now he has no need of me – I’m not coming to Pest – everybody wants a portrait – I wrote and told Legrády^[3] that I would paint him and Herczeg^[4] in Paris, which of course would be expensive for them – and they wrote to say they couldn’t come – Siklossy^[5] is coming here in the second half of July – when I’ll mention to him that I was expecting a more senior award – difficult for Horthy^[6] to confer, of course – because the portrait is of him [110886], but Siklossy has an excellent position in Parliament – and it is from there that my name should be put forward – which I am completely counting on – only now do I understand why Bárczy kept Siklossy away from me in Pest! But don’t breathe a word of this to anyone – and destroy this letter – How much I have done – – for my country! –

Our Garden Party was a great success with 250 guests – I am perpetually on the go – at present I am painting an Indian prince – It has been very warm for three days – we are having nice weather – though until now it rained non-stop

We are enjoying our lovely garden – and are able to eat outside – the family is well – Johny^[7] – comes home tomorrow – I hear he did well in his finals – but we will only know for sure in a month’s time – It’s terribly sad how quickly time passes – he is the last to finish university – I enjoyed going up to Oxford – I’m getting old – but I am still full of enthusiasm for my work and I have a lot to do – my big canvas^[8] – writing my memoirs – etc.

We went down to the country yesterday – to see Henry’s wife^[9] in her new permanent home – they have a pretty little house in a village which I helped them with. Henry is currently in Berlin for a few days, lecturing at the University there – which he was invited to do and which is a great compliment to him – the factory is coming on famously – better than we expected – [it is an enormously common-sense enterprise, thanks to his teachers and to us?] –

On the 28th I go to Paris for a week – with my man^[10] – to paint the portrait of a French countess [111424] – I want to see the Salon, too, which closes on the 30th – and all my friends there – I will be painting in the Duc de Gramont’s house^[11] – but I hope to be back here again by the 7th of July – I’ve got a lot on –

On the 2nd of August we go to Salzburg for 3 or four days –

we really must – meet up there. We go through the Tyrol – by car – en route for Italy – I want to see the Titian exhibition in Venice – So arrange things in such a way that you set off from Pest on the 1st of Aug – for a week – Johny will drive the motor car – he is a good chauffeur – But not a word to the family about this – Gyula^[12] wrote to me – asking me to send him some money every month, just imagine – frightful fellow – I loathe him, I’ll send something to Szerén^[13] in the next day or so – and to Elza^[14] too – and a present for Ilonka’s boy,^[15] but I won’t write to Gyula to tell him what I think of him – and please do not pass this letter around in the coffee house – Don’t talk about any of this –

When is the official unveiling of the Horthy portrait [110886] in Parliament? Siklossy’s colour reproduction of the Horthy is very bad – Please immediately send me a photograph – the Munich one – of my portrait.

How is your health and your business? And don’t say a word to Gyula and co. or to anyone else in the family about what I’ve written to you – you know nothing!

Június hó 10 ről K. kimeríto leveledet vettem és csak ma jutok hozzá válaszolni – mindenekelőtt –“business” mellékelve küldöm az Erlanger itteni bankár levelének copyaját – melyből látni fogod hogy 198 márka lett a müncheni Kuranstaltba befizetve – Michel részére – reméllem megkaptad onnét is az értesítést. Miután magam német értékpapírjaim után nem kaphatom ide a jövedelmet azon leszek hogy a jövőben is oda fizessenek. e hó végével pedig Genshovnak küldöm a 2000- frankot. Bizony szomoru amit írtál saját veszteségeidről – magam is felét vesztettem el – az amerikai összeomlás után – nehezen takarított vagyon volt, ha nem történt volna – ma csakis kedvem szerint festenék – de hála Istennek – kereshetek – s mások nagyon rosszul állanak itt is külföldön – folyton kapok leveleket különösen magyaroktól – ide akarnak jönni – a nyakamba – azon név alatt hogy növendékeim mindenkit visszautasítok –
