Introduction

This handout explains how to backup and restore course content. A backup file can be created from a previous semester, saved on your computer, and uploaded into your most recent course. Once uploaded, your backup file can be restored in your new course.

It is always a good idea to keep a backup file stored in a safe location on your computer. The ITRC is not responsible for storing and archiving course backup files.

Backup Course Data from Previous Semesters

Courses from 2015 - 2016 can be located from https://elearning.isu.edu/moodle

  1. Access the course you wish to backup.
  2. In the Settings Gear Menu, Select Backup.

  1. On the Backup settings page, these options are checked automatically:
  1. Include activities and resources
  2. Include blocks
  3. Include filters
  4. Include calendar events
  5. Include question bank
  6. Include groups and groupings
  7. Include competencies

  1. Choose one of the following options:
  1. Jump to final step - this option automatically creates a backup file including everything in the course.
  2. Next - this option takes you to the next page to select the items you wish to include/exclude in the backup file.

Note: The following steps are to guide you through the backup process if you clicked Next.

  1. On the following page, Check/Uncheck the boxes next to the items you may or may not wish to include in the backup file.
  1. You can check/uncheck the entire course by clicking All or None at the top of the page.

  1. If you would like to add specific items from a week/topic, you must select the name of the week/topic and then check the specific items you wish to include in the backup file.

Note: It is recommended to include everything in the backup for archival purposes. When restoring, you can choose which items will be included or removed.

  1. Once you have selected the items you wish to include, at the bottom of the page, Click Next.
  2. On the next page, you will see the backup filename, settings, and included items.
  1. If you choose to change the Filename, make sure to keep .mbz at the end of the file. Otherwise, the file will not work when you want to restore the course content. Example: Fall2014Course_Backup.mbz

  1. The included items will be checkmarked and the items not included will have an X next to them.
  1. At the bottom of the page, Click Perform backup.

Note: The backup process may take a few minutes. Do not do anything with the computer until the progress bar reaches 100%. If you feel the process is taking longer than it should, contact the

  1. After you receive the message, “The backup file was successfully created,” Click Continue.

  1. On the next page, Locate the Course backup area.

  1. The top file should be the most recent backup file created for the course.
  2. To the right of the filename, Click Download.

  1. In the pop-up, Select Save File.
  2. Click OK.

  1. Select an area on your computer to save the backup file.
  1. You can also save the backup file to a removable storage device.
  1. Click Save File.

Restore Course Data to 2016-2017 Courses


Moodle ISU allows you to restore content from a backup file that has been created from a previous course.

  1. Login to Moodle.
  2. In your Dashboard, Select the course you wish to restore the backup file to.
  3. In the Admin Gear Menu, Select Restore.

  1. In the Import a backup file section, Click Choose a file.

Note: You can also drag and drop the file to the Files box.

  1. Browse for the backup file you just saved.

  1. Click Upload this file.

  1. Click Restore.

Note: If you receive the error message, This file is bigger than the maximum size,” or, if you experience other problems while restoring, contact the ITRC - (208) 282-5880 or email itrc@isu.edu

  1. The Backup settings page shows all the items included in the backup file.
  2. At the bottom of the page, Click Continue.

  1. On the next page, in the Restore into this course section, Click Continue for Merge the backup course into this course.

  1. On the Restore settings page, the following are automatically checked to be included in the restore process:
  1. Include Activities and Resources
  2. Include blocks
  3. Include filters
  4. Include calendar events
  5. Include groups and groupings

Note: Any item with an X next to it will not be included in the restore.

  1. Uncheck any setting you do not wish to include in your restore.
  2. At the bottom of the page, Click Next.

  1. On the Course settings page, Scroll down to the items with checkboxes.
  2. Check/Uncheck any item you may or may not wish to include in the restore.
  1. You can check/uncheck all of the items in the restore by clicking All or None at the top of the page.
  2. If you would like to add specific items from a week/topic, you must select the name of the week/topic and then check the specific items you wish to include in the backup file.

  1. At the bottom of the page, Click Next.

  1. On the next page, you will see the items you have selected to include in the restore as checkmarked items.
  1. The items not included in the restore will have an X next to them.
  2. If you wish to make any changes to your selections, Click Previous at the bottom of the page.

  1. At the bottom of the page, Click Perform restore.

  1. Wait for the progress bar to reach 100%.
  1. The restore process may take a few minutes. If you feel the process is taking longer than expected, contact the ITRC - (208) 282-5880 or email itrc@isu.edu

  1. When you receive the message, The course was restored successfully…”, Click Continue.

Note: If you encounter a Technical information and warnings text area below the Continue button and your restore was successful, you can ignore the information in the box.

Cleanup Backup Files

  1. Navigate to your course.

  1. In the Settings Gear Menu, Click Restore.

Note: There are two backup areas - Course backup area and User private backup area. You will need to do the following for all the files contained in both areas.

  1. Download a copy of the backups for yourself for archival purposes.
  1. To the right of the backup filename, Click Download to save the file to your computer.

To delete the excess backup files:

Once you have downloaded your backup files, you will need to delete them out of Moodle.

Note: You just saved a copy, so you are good to delete the duplicate files.

  1. For both the Course backup area and the User private backup area, Click Manage backup files.

  1. Click on a file.

Note: You can only select one file at a time to delete.

  1. Click Delete.

  1. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to delete the file.
  2. Click OK.

  1. Once all the files have been deleted, Click Save changes.

  1. You will be taken to the course with the backup material included.
