In the book Smile, author Raina Telgemeier uses capital letters to show the feelings the character is showing. This impacts the reader by showing the character development. To show how the character is feeling mad the author uses big letters and dramatic fonts to impact the character more. Telgemeier in page 188 and 189, picture 5 and 9 states “SLAM! I DON’T CARE WHAT THEY WERE DOING THEY PULLED OFF MY SKIRT IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL”. The capital letters shows how the character is feeling and the emotions that she wants to express. Raina should be mad because the friends that she is with always makes fun of her and bully her. Raina’s friends doesn’t think it’s a big deal, and makes it seem like a normal joke. The text shows that Raina is very mad, but I think she is also sad and embarrassed because she thought those girls were her friends, but they embarrass her in front of everybody.
