My dear Marczi

I got your [long] letter of 28th December and the catalogue – the Műcsarnok sent another one – I had a warm letter from Petrovics,^[1] the director, thanking me for the Magdalen painting [2932], the minister hasn’t written yet, and nor has Bárczy for more than a month – odd that his wife didn’t thank us for the tea. But I expect that they are very busy at the ministry around the end of the year.

I have sent instructions for the 2000 francs to go to Genshov for the month of January of the new year. I also wrote to Szerén – asking if Aunt Anna got the money – I knew what I was doing when I sealed the letter – and wrote the amount on it!^[2] I’m glad everything is going well otherwise. Today I finished replying to all our Christmas and New Year’s greetings – it was a ghastly job. On Saturday afternoon we’re going down to the seaside at Brighton until Monday because we need some sea air – and a rest from work – I will be very busy this month – and we will head south for 4–5 weeks at the end of January and on the way spend two days in Pest but completely privately – in the hotel – as well as the bedroom and bathroom we want a room where family and friends can come for dinner so that we can just be amongst ourselves  

[In the margin] I avoid receiving Hungarians as far as possible – they would only make a nuisance of themselves

We don’t want to see anyone – we might – just – accept an invitation from the Regent^[3] – we’ll see the family – go to the museum – and to the cemetery – everything has to be carefully arranged – no one must know we’re there – otherwise we will be pestered –

Yes – £800 for a small canvas, a head and shoulders, that was auctioned in the presence of the King – is a great moral triumph – of course my fellow artists don’t like it – This year my tax will be lower – because I earned less – and now I only want to paint a few portraits – and work for myself. You are right when you say that there are a lot of bad painters [here/there] as there are everywhere – and they work from photographs. When are you setting off for Munich? I am glad that your business went better last year. Stephen and Patrick’s factory is doing famously – they sold 12,000 lamps in the last two months despite the stiff competition.^[4] We’re having a lot of rain at the moment, dark days – and we’re longing to go south – You must come here in the summer – I will send you an illustrated magazine which features our house, the studio and rooms in a nice article – a pity you can’t read it

Kedves Marczim,

[Hosszu] leveledet Dec. 28-árol megkaptam valamint a catalogust – egy másikat a Műcsarnok küldödt – Petrovics igazgatótól kaptam meleg köszönő levelet – a magdalen kepért, a minister még nem írt, valamint Bárczy sem már több egy honapja – különös hogy felesége nem köszön a teáért. De hiszem hogy az év vége fele a ministeriumban nagyon el vannak foglalva. Genshovhoz a 2000 frankot inditottam – az új év Január hónapjára. Írtam Szerénnek is – kérdeztem vajjon Anna néni megkapta e a pénzt – én tudtam miért pecsételtem a levelet – s írtam reá az összeget! Örvendek hogy különben minden jól megy. Én máig teljesen válaszoltam az összes karácsonyi s újévi üdvözletekre – rettenetes munka volt. Szombaton délután Brightonba a tengerre megyünk Hétfőig mert kell egy kis tengeri levegő – s pihenés a sok munkától – E hónapban még sokat leszek elfoglalva – s Január végével délre indulunk 4–5 hétre s az uton két napot Pesten töltünk de teljesen visszavonultan – a szállóba – a háló s fürdőszoba mellett egy szobát szeretnénk ahol a család barátok jönne vacsorára ugy hogy teljesen közöttünk lehessünk a

nem akarunk senkivel találkozni – talán a Régenstől – csakis – fogadnánk el egy meghívást – a családot – a muzeumot meglátogatjuk – s a temetőbe megyünk – minden jól kell rendezni – nem szabad senkinek tudni hogy ott vagyunk különben – zaklatásnak leszünk kitéve – igen – a 800 £ egy kis vászonért – mellkép mely a király jelenlétében lett elárverezve – nagy morális siker – persze a collegák ezt nem szeretik – Az idén adom kevesebb lesz – mert kevesebbet kerestem – s most csak néhány arczképet akarok festeni – s magamnak dolgozni. Bizony amint írod [itt/ott] sok a rossz festő mint mindenütt – s fotográfiákkal dolgoznak. Mikor indulsz Münchenbe? Örvendek hogy az üzleted  a múlt évben javult. Stephen s Patrick gyára egész pompásan halad – az utolsó két hónapban 12.000 lampat adtak el a nagy concurentia daczára. Nálunk most sok az eső, sötét napok – s vágyunk délre menni – A nyáron néked kell ide jönnöd – küldök nektek egy illustrált lapot melyben Házunk – s a műterem – s szobák megjelentek egy szép tárczával – sajnos hogy nem tudod olvasni – Mintanyiunk részéről meleg üdvözlet – Év végével találkozunk
